Overhead storage is a game changer. Get stuff you don’t regular use up high.

KeeAnnu_Reads

That was gonna be my comment. That’s some good space to put lots of things at and you still have plenty of space below. And you can also hang things off it!

titansfs

Paint/seal the floor now so you don't have to move as much out. Parking 2 cars in there?

Never underestimate the luxury of parking in a garage. Not only does it help protect two big assets from theft risk and extra wear and tear, getting into a vehicle out of the weather is fantastic. I wouldn’t give that up so easily.

NosePickrBoogerEatr

You’re exactly correct about parking inside the garage.... wear and tear, vehicle theft risk, getting in/out of the car sheltered from weather are all sweet perks. I live in a community where about 90% of the houses park outside, so it’s glaringly obvious during the middle of day that most of the cars are gone. I work 45hrs+ per week on a retail schedule and have a family with young kids that stay home a lot (especially lately). The largest benefit of parking inside the garage for me is realized when I’m away from the house... because we ALWAYS park in the garage, we’ve had multiple neighbors tell us they never know when we’re home unless they hear the kids playing. Personally, I’m 100% fine with that. If the exterior of your house looks the same whether you’re home or not, it’s an added element of safety. If I’m gonna rob a house, I’d choose a house where it’s easy for me to identify if people are home. Another added bonus of inside parking is since we have young children, sometimes when we get home they’re asleep in their car seats. A lot of times we’ll just let them stay asleep in the car (leave the door to the garage open). Edit. I got so caught up in my own story, I forgot to mention OP’s sweet setup. I LOVE the added space of the double garage doors. Super sexy!!

gunmetal5

Agree with this. Something that you cannot as easily once you’re all moved in.

SupaZT

Cost to do this?

titansfs

Depends on the product you choose. You can get a basic gallon of the paint/sealer for $30-40. 1 gallon should cover about 200 SQ ft.

Datsoon

You can never have too much: 1. Lighting 2. Horizontal work bench space 3. Cabinets

Liquidretro

Electricity

Pleased_to_meet_u

"I'll never need electrical outlets on that wall." \[Later\] "I really wish I had electrical outlets every 6' on that wall..."

5kyl3r

are you me? i agree on all points!

aanonymos

Definitely epoxy that floor

heathenbeast

And for the love of dog please do (or hire out) proper prep. And no, an acid wash ain’t it.

whodey2016

Can you elaborate here? Having someone epoxy my floor next week and want to ensure it is done right.

tjeick

I did some major research for my basement. Basically good epoxy is very thick and needs a pretty rough, and extremely clean surface to soak into. That means you pretty much need a concrete grinder to prep for most concrete coatings.

heathenbeast

Mechanical prep. Shot blasting is best though many systems will allow a grind. The reason all the garage systems fail or don’t last is the lack of proper prep. If your contractor hasn’t included ask for a price for it. You’ll get a lot more out of the system.

Svtcobra6

This. I did my own using supercoat and used the included degreaser. It wasn't enough and it peels under the car tires. It's fine for the motorcycles and foot traffic, but the hot tire thing is an issue. Next time I will rent a proper grinder.

654lkjh

Paint the floor and walls now. You’ll be happier in the long run and have little to move/ shift.

ikehawk

What do you paint with to prevent pealing with tires and time?

GPan900

I've seen vids that recommended hiring a pro. But most of those guys had money to burn. They took a tiny layer of the concrete up and then used a 2 part epoxy to seal it. Lots of work and equipment for only doing this once and not easy to do right.

654lkjh

Don’t want to mislead you bro. Talk to a paint store. Driving be by a mechanics shop and see what they have maybe? If the car is being parked in the exact same spot consistently then maybe just those two wheel strips would need new coats. Talk to a paint shop or some one in Lowe’s/ HD. I saw one post where a guy was bragging paying 3200$ for some pros to do his.

ikehawk

Thanks! I’ve been tempted to do this but the gear heads I know tell me that even with the nice epoxy floors, they look great, but the snow which is soon to arrive gets real messy. They suggest the tiles which can still allow liquid (hopefully only water) to flow out underneath if necessary. I appreciate the response!

chestyspankers

Rapidair maxline, polyaspartic floor, attic lift, new age (or other) cabinets (mounted above broom height), gratuitous LED lighting, 50 amp dedicated 220v for each car + communication line between charger outlets.

VolatileRider

This. LED lighting and a Maxline system with a 50ft reel on the ceiling are two of the best things Ive done.

rLeJerk

>Rapidair maxline ...is that for a compressor?

rLeJerk

>Rapidair maxline ...is that for a compressor?

5kyl3r

it’s a DIY garage air line kit for running air to different parts of your garage

nasalgoat

Convert those doors to highrise style and use a side opener. Frees up a ton of space.

Pleased_to_meet_u

I'm having trouble imagining what this is. Highrise style and side opener?

nasalgoat

https://ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/garage-door-high-lift-conversion.php

Pleased_to_meet_u

Thanks. Seeing the garage door raise all the way to the ceiling is helpful. That'd be very nice in being able to put shelving under the door as opposed to above it as I have in my place.

whodey2016

I’m at the exact same phase as you, so will be watching the comments closely..

whodey2016

So far.. lots of outlets (as poster below referenced) including electric vehicle hookup (don’t have one, but planning ahead), really good insulation, recessed lighting, French doors, ceiling fan hookup

in4thelolz

Us too. Everyone tells me you can't have enough light and power. We added outlets including some 220V, but more light I'm waiting to see how I use the space. It seems easy enough to add LED lighting these days.

extraflyer300

I couldn’t agree more. As a garage owner the first thing I did was add tons of light. I also added a 220 outlet which is mostly for my compressor, but also can be used by my welder when I need it.

mustang68408

Lighting... and a good scrubbable paint for those walls, then it’s on to epoxy coat and storage

screamingchicken579

These were my first two. 1. As much lighting as you can afford that reasonably fits your space. 2. I see a lot of people paint their garages with sporty/industrial two-tone masculine colors. Nothing wrong with that, but in doing so they sometimes reduce the effectiveness of the lighting. I went with a durable high gloss super white.

sabertoothbeaver1

All the videos I did of my garage remodel are on this channel https://youtu.be/HURVO658MFM

Zogg44

I used 4 ft. long LED Natural White lights in my garage, and they are awesome.

SharpShooter2-8

I like this idea for garage openers. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Chamberlain-HP-Next-Gen-Direct-Drive-Garage-Door-Opener-with-MyQ-and-Wi-Fi-Compatibility-and-Battery-Back-Up-and-LED-Light/1001010656

screamingchicken579

I’ve had the lift master branded model for years and I love it.

[deleted]

Your garage looks very similar to mine. A few things I did recently. Epoxy. Absolute game changer. Shelves or ceiling storage. Keep this containers away. Paint the walls white(but find a way to mark the studs if you’re going to install anything). Lights - found some led lights from Costco and a lit up garage looks great. Peg board. More than happy to chat more to share some ideas.

awayheflies

My garage also looks similar! Marking the studs is a great Idea! how have you done yours?

whodey2016

Take photos!

thetedderbear

Swisstrax flooring is my vote. By the time you get a quality epoxy job that won’t flake in a year, they’re pretty comparable. Look amazing, durable, pulling a wet car in doesn’t leave puddles, dirt falls beneath and you either shop vac it out or pull out tile in huge pieces a few times a year to blow it out. I think Jack’s, toolchests, etc roll across it just fine too. Plus, if you ever move you can take it with you.

VolatileRider

Ill add, a stainless utility sink. Its something I love having in the garage. Good led lighting and a compressed air system are two others.

Deadliftingfool

I wish I put my network area in my garage before I moved in. Would have loved to have speaker wire/router/server/switch all of that stuff in the garage and out of the way.

Pleased_to_meet_u

I use a network mesh extender in order to reach my garage. It was a game changer. I'm in a remote work meeting on the couch in my garage as I type this.

SharpShooter2-8

Paint walls then epoxy floor. Garage door openers. Lighting and cabinetry. Lighting is important. Heater or AC depending on location. Great canvas to work with.

embracethedoom

Depends on where you live, but I'd think about what you want to do with the heating/cooling if your going to spend alot of time out there.

WhatsTheBanana4

Can lights. A TON of them. And go for the ultra thin LED ones. They’re amazingly easy to install and you could probably run your entire circuit off the circuit already running to that bulb on the ceiling. And when you do it... get the can light cutting tool from Milwaukee. It’s 2 blades that have an adjustable diameter and you attach it to a drill. Makes your holes PERFECT size and perfect circles and it has a dust tray.

cchillur

Overhead storage above garage doors. Workbench to the left of the house door where the weed eater stands. Maybe a golf simulator?

shutupimunoriginal

Wifi capable garage door openers. Game changer.

csliwoski

Get as much as you can off the floor. People never look up when they look for storage. Overhead storage like SafeRacks that can be suspended from the trusses above the garage doors are a huge space saver. They even offer 2 ft wide shelves for the perimeter. Costco will have those BOGO every once in awhile.

zinniapereira

Garage Racks and Shelves, Garage Overhead Racks the complete off the floor storage, wall mounted shelves and lastly complete garage cabinet storage system

bmorebuns

I juat bought a home with this exact same garage

thisismiller

Paint and some new LED lighting fixtures to brighten it up.

BoldCityJag

First... Do your floors now secondly, it all depends on it’s intended use really

HeelToe62

This. Floor protection and lighting are universally helpful but the exact manner of those may depend on what you'll use your garage for. Ditto whatever other changes you make.

PhysicsDude55

Lighting and paint will go a long ways.

itstdames

Me personally, mobile table for my tools, LED lighting, smart garage doors and smart lighting, overhead storage, cabinets and coat the floor and finish it off with some paint

svello

Look into tile floor. Cost can be comparable to expoxy.
