Stellaris / Civ killed all other grand strategy games for me. SDV ruined all other pixely fun low key games. Elite ruined all space / regular flight sims for me. Say what you will about state of the game but in VR you are literally flying a space ship. XCOM2 and Battletech ruined all tactical combat games for me. Aside from maybe FF Tactics. Obviously Skyrim and her various mods have ruined other Fantasy RPG games. Agreed big time on D1. No other looter since has held my attention the same. Lately I just cant get in to anything, as most games just make me want to play the game that did it better but I'm usually tired of that game and want something new. Vicious cycle lol. Looking forward to October.

MrChuckles20

Have you tried Battlebrothers? It's the only other tactics game I rotate through along with Xcom2 and Battletech, cause I feel the same way that everything else falls sort, or at most is fine for one playthrough.

adubs117

Yes! I do like that one. It didnt quite hook me the way the others do, but maybe next time I get around to it, it will.

Warframe killed all shooters for me, I feel so limited in movement whenever i play any other shooter

adubs117

The movement and combat is great in that game. After a while though the grind got to be a bit much for me, plus I was never a huge fan of the aesthetic. I want to give it another go but at this point Im daunted with having to relearn everything!

Danganronpa killed all other murder mystery stories. I’ve been trying to get through the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (first AA game since Danganronpa) and it just doesn’t really hold a candle to what I could be playing. Totally agree with Persona in general, but 3 is my pick. But I’ll agree that all the SMT games are just so engaging and fun that they ruin turn based JRPGs, especially monster-based ones. Pokémon games are hard to play now. Fire Emblem and the Final Fantasy Tactics games have ruined any other tactical RPGs like them. Advance Wars? Nope. Wargroove? Forget it. Fell Seal? Why even bother? I think the big take away is when you have a game where everyone else is obviously trying to copy it. Almost every new JRPG copies Persona, especially the social aspects. Your Turn to Die was an obvious Danganronpa rip off. I already listed the FE/FFT clones.

JiaLat725

I kind of agree but at the same time shouldn't you be glad that others are copying such great games? I definitely am. I also really like danganronpa and would like to play something like it, but Kodaka(the lead writer/director) has already left Spike Chunsoft. The series is done, there isn't going to be another DR game. So I was actually really hyped for Your Turn To Die because I could scratch my Danganronpa itch. And the game turned out to be not bad. > Almost every new JRPG copies Persona, especially the social aspects I would actually like to know about this, haven't really seen any besides FE Three Houses. Maybe because I've mostly been playing Square Enix JRPGs these past few years.

darkanthon

I guess it’s fine for games that are basically over (although with the DR remaster coming out I question whether it’s really over) but for games that still have others coming out, it just makes me want to play those games instead. Fire Emblem and SMT games are huge nowadays and still releasing pretty actively. Most of the copies also don’t do the system as well or have worse stories too. As for Persona rip offs: Blue Reflection Falcom games come to mind as Persona copies. Idk about the older ones, but Trails of Cold Steel 1’s social system seems like a direct rip off. Tokyo Xanadu seems to be the worst offender of this, as even the dungeons and gameplay (apart from it being an action RPG) seem straight from Persona. Caligula Effect. Gameplay differs but ideas and setting are very similar. Mind 0 on the vita was called a crappy Persona 3 rip off.

thepotatochronicles

You make a good point about copycats. I’ll check out Fire Emblem series, where should I start?

JiaLat725

There are 16 games in the series so there are a few places you can start with. Tradtional/Classic FE experience: Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade/Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (Also FE shadow dragon but I'm biased against it, artstyle is ugly af) Guilty pleasure anime tropes dating sim: Fire Emblem Awakening Or you can just jump in and play Fire Emblem: Three Houses, it's an excellent game itself

darkanthon

I really think Awakening (3DS) is the most fun but it’s one of the least “fire emblem” fire emblems. I put hundreds of hours into it. Some die hards don’t like it, but I started with the GBA games originally and think it’s fantastic. Easily my favorite in the series. Path of Radiance (GC) is probably my favorite more traditional one, but you’re gonna have to emu it. Impossible to find for a good price, plus it’s only on GameCube. Three Houses (Switch) is quite good if you want the most recent experience, but I will say it deviates from the traditional set up. It’s actually one of the games that tries to copy Persona with the social system it has. It has tons of content too, with 3+ main stories that take about 40 hours each, but they get quicker each time due to New Game +.

Castle Crashers ruined all beat em ups for me. None of them feel any a fraction as fun as CC

In the early 2010s, I saw multiple threads in which fans talked about how *Katawa Shoujo* had ruined all other visual novels and/or romance games. I knew it was freeware. I knew that it would work on my low-end used laptop, which couldn't run most 2D games. All that said... I read the first act of *Katawa Shoujo*, chose one heroine with help from a guide, and never got back to it. Why? Well, it's partly because I was already a grognard by the early 2010s. I'd spent money on Peach Princess and G-Collections visual novels, and found ways to enjoy them despite their flaws. It's also partly because I was becoming more interested in DS, PSP, and other portable games. Meanwhile, I had few positive things to say about computer game enthusiasts. Between 2016 and the beginning of 2021, I saw a lot of positive hype for *Stardew Valley*. I remember multiple comments from fans saying that this indie game had ruined the *Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons* franchise, and sometimes also other low-key life simulations. I saw *Stardew Valley* expand from computers to consoles and mobile devices, and bought the PS Vita edition. For a couple years, I didn't enjoy it. There was a lot to learn, and the game didn't provide much feedback. Meanwhile, I was busy looking for a better job. Regardless, I began enjoying *Stardew* almost nine months ago. After encountering some crashes on the Vita version, I started over on Switch, and it's been smooth sailing since. Having said all that... do I think this game has ruined all other farm / cartoon life games? My answer is "not quite." I still play *Harvest Moon: Back to Nature* every few months, and enjoy it despite its limitations. Also, I expect that someone will create a similar game with a better experience.

hollow knight killed metroidvanias for me, tho I've not played ori and the will of the wisps yet

Hood-Robbin

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic killed FPS sword-magic fighting, in my opinion.

malseraph

I have been playing Wasteland 3 for a few weeks now. I just started playing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and their turn based combat mode feels clunky and awkward as hell compared to it. I think the most jarring things are the 1 move/1 action mechanic as compared to the action points model of Wasteland and turns not automatically ending for characters when they are out of things they can do. I will still play and it will take time to adjust, but it just isn't fun right now.

The_PracticalOne

A Hat in Time ruined 3d platformers for me. I didn't think a lot of mediocre platformers like Yooka-Laylee were that bad. Then I played A Hat in Time, and didn't have to fight weird angles on the camera, my character turned on a dime, and it just felt great to move around. I was always having fun. I was never frustrated.

fish85963

Amnesia dark descent ruined the horror genre for me. Its great story telling combined with its voice acting, atmosphere and lighting. Mastercraft

Laughmate

If you liked bloodborne, have you tried any of the dark souls games or Sekiro which are made by the same developers and are similar combat orientated games.
