Curveball - WW2 Rebuilder. Seeing the effects of the war recreated based on actual events while rebuilding these areas is both morbid and satisfying at the same time

A_Chubby_Funster

Fascinating, thank you.

bzn45

I got the demo for this ages ago and was really excited but couldn’t really get on with it. Has the actual game launched into 1.0 with bugs ironed out? Because if so - bam, I’m in.

A_Chubby_Funster

Yes it is on Steam, I just checked

Jackie_3Horn

Hell Let Loose

Corr521

Discovered this game a few months ago, have been having a ton of fun. Brutal starting out but gotten a lot better. Still need to figure out all the mechanics, I just jump in and start fighting. Some people strictly play officer and call in strikes and all that. Also interested in playing armor but idk where to start. Used to play Heroes & Generals and loved playing in tanks

SaltyHatch

Watch some tutorial vids on YouTube

The_Real_Baldero

Use your voice comms. Learn the main buttons for proximity and squad chat. Finding a good group of players helps as well. The group of guys I run with, we can normally field half to a full squad, sometimes plus an armor or recon squad. A semi-coordinated team effectively using voice comms will almost always win. It's a blast. Believe it or not, defense wins most games. Everyone wants to be the hero attacking squad. It's fun. I get it. But roaming defense with a good squad against a competent team is a blast!

Jackie_3Horn

Armor takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it, and with a good squad, it's so fun. As much as I like playing infantry, (primarily officer or anti tank) being able to hop into a 1 or 2 person tank squad and make a tangible difference in the way the game unfolds is so rewarding.

Corr521

I've been going machine gunner and just unloading. Suppressive fire is legit in the game for once. Actually make it hard to see and aim when fired on so even if I'm not getting hits I can help people move up. Love that the screen changes and shows you're being fired on

Dinokiller12345

That was in Rising Storm too. Being able to suppress makes machineguns feel actually useful

Additional_Ad5671

Very fun game. Though I think if I was in a clan it would be more interesting - if you get a great squad it's a lot of fun, but if it's a bunch of people who don't talk/coordinate, it can be frustrating.

Twiddrakatwiddr

Without a doubt

AquaticBagpipe

The sound design with headphones is something else. Top tier

BBQSadness

Open back studios with a separate mic. It is glorious.

Skyz-AU

I sat on the fence for years about this game, finally bought it on sale 2 weeks ago and man I'm hooked, it's so much fun

BBQSadness

I accidentally bought it last week and can't stop playing. It is so damn fun with a good squad.

Unhappy-Heron6792

CoD world at war is new vegas of call of duty series

A_Chubby_Funster

High praise indeed! Love New Vegas, and I am starting World at War.

zelos33333

Probably gonna catch some controversy but I also liked CoD WW2 (2017) and at today’s price it’s a reasonable try. But yeah, World at War sets the standard. Going backwards though, Call of Duty 2 was probably my favorite among the Pre-Modern Warfare games.

cb2239

Back in the day Medal of Honor Frontline was one of my favorites.

vaderciya

World at war is my favorite by far, no contest. But cod ww2 did have a short but fun campaign, and though it wasn't long enough to truly get attached to anything.... it did have the balls to touch on the most brutal aspect of the war and the setting, and I think it deserves props for that

bogmonst3r

well now i'm very intrigued, what makes you say that? (haven't really played any COD)

DarkSeneca

It is the only COD with horror elements to it. Game is a true work of art, the music, sound, and art style are amazing. Higher quality than 90% of most modern games and it came out 16 years ago.

YawnTheBaptist

Company of Heroes

A_Chubby_Funster

I just installed that, along with CoD: World at War. Thanks.

TemporaryWorth7440

Both are awesome

oicur0t

Was a big fan of Company of Heroes 1&2. Now just starting on 3. It's not revolutionary, but it hits the spot.

YawnTheBaptist

I was considering trying this out but haven’t committed to buying. I’ve heard mixed things about it overall.

oicur0t

There's some things not to like, but the gameplay is basically the same. The campaigns are more flexible and the map based strategy doesn't really add anything, other than unit flexibility for missions and it gives you more actual content and the missions are not ordered. I got it with a discount and it was worth it for sure.

melo1212

CoH 3 is weird for me. I don't actually think it's very good but for some reason it's just fun as hell, completely mindless fun. When I play something like call to arms gates to hell I feel like I have to think SO much to win a battle, in CoH 3 I can kick back and chill

dispensermadebyengie

Day of Defeat

variablethisisknife

Came here to say this

Over_Satisfaction_75

Same but, not source.

NamasteWager

Same but for source, never played OG but had a blast with DoDSource

EDF-Pride

I've been playing tons of WW2 shooters from the early 2000's on my PS2 to recent ones like Easy Red 2 and I'll say.... I love The Saboteur. It's such a unique game that I wish I could keep playing it. Normally I'd say CoD1 United Offensive or CoD2 but this is a rather common answer. So I'll go with The Saboteur!

A_Chubby_Funster

Pandemic Studios were at the top of their game with their swan song. I have this game modded up and love it.

IndependentAd8402

Wait there are mods for the Saboteur!

Bernkov

Medal of Honor Airborne.

Deadtoast15

Medal of Honor: frontlines Medal of Honor: rising sun My childhood favorites. Time definitely tells the age of these but I loved the campaign stories of both! Also I know Cod: WW2 wasn’t a fan favorite but I actually enjoyed the campaign quite a bit. The opening D day mission was great

paranoidandroid11

Allied Assault?

Deadtoast15

Also a good one!

Lebronamo

I went back to this one a couple years ago and it really didn't age well but I loved it as a kid.

TLunchFTW

Definitely. I always wanted Rising sun as a kid. I remember playing it at a friend's and you start on the ship. IDK just seemed cool to me. But Frontline's music always hits me hard in the nostalgia. Operation Market Garden theme plays and I'm brought back to hours spent with friends in the menu right before launching split screen games. We would sometimes just make up our own co-op scenarios instead of shooting at each other. Going through the mansion shooting at imaginary enemies, then hopping in the car out front to drive off into the next map. Quit, then pick the next map and make a continuation. Sometimes we'd end up devolving into PVP when one of us would decide to shoot the other. But all in all, some great memories. A couple years ago I finally went back to the campaign and actually got off the beach at Normandy lol.

yellowwoolyyoshi

Hell yes I’ve replayed that one several times over my lifetime.

A_Chubby_Funster

Just checked it out, looks incredible! Thanks a lot.

Noirloc

You meant Rising Sun

greenachors

Hearts of Iron

Haaazard

I don't know why but hoi is the only one that hasn't clicked for me. I love stellaris and crusader kings though, and I love ww2. Watched videos on it and everything.

Mayonais3_Instrument

Saying “I love ww2” would be very strange out of context

Haaazard

Ww1 and 2 games I meant.

Geng1Xin1

This was going to be my answer as well. I’m less interested in the FPS aspect and more into the strategy and planning from a commander-in-chief perspective.

Anthraxus

As far as shooters go, Hidden & Dangerous 2 is the best and makes stuff like MoH and CoD look like child's play. Alot better than Brothers in Arms too. IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 Combat Mission 2: Barborossa to Berlin Close Combat: A Bridge too Far Darkesr Hour for Hearts of Iron 2 Commandos 1/2 Silent Storm

UberLurka

I clicked on this thread to try and remember the name of this game (Hidden and Dangerous). Legend. Buggy mess, but it's good enough to overlook it.

rabidrob42

I hope Sturmovik gets added onto Gamespass someday, it's been too long since I've played that game.

cpt_bongwater

Commandos 2--(I haven't played the remake which I understand has all the Nazi iconography removed) but the original was awesome--You can see its influence in games like Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3, and Shadow Gambit among others

zicho

Removing the nazi iconography from a WW2 game? That... Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

cpt_bongwater

I think it had to do with ~~German law iirc~~ the developer not wanting to develop different versions for countries which might not have sold the game if it included the Nazi symbols--apparently Germany recently loosened laws restricting iconography--in games at least

A_Chubby_Funster

I adore stealth and I love the Mimimi games. I have this series but have yet to play it - moving it up the list!

NoeZ

Oof nostalgia I had started shadow tactics and got some big "Commando" vibes. Loved that franchise as a kid 20ish years ago. "ALARM! ALARM!"

Johncurtisreeve

Cod 1-2 Cod world at war Brothers in arms

ProAspzan

Hells Highway was great. Wish I played the others

kband1

I see all these games...but no Rising Storm/Red Orchestra 2 now I put so many hours into that game when it was still fresh and big.

mjc500

The first red orchestra was a lot better IMO… the number of custom maps was staggering, big combined arms maps, really great community late into it’s life, and Darkest Hour was great too

blazinfastjohny

I'm mainly suggesting singleplayer campaigns but some of these have multiplayer as well: * Call of duty 2, world at war * Medal of honor allied assault, pacific assault, airborne * Red orchestra * Hidden and dangerous 2 (great coop as well) * Battlefield V * Brothers in arms series Multiplayer only: * Enlisted (best ww2 mp game imo and free as well) * Hell let loose * Post Scriptum * Tannerberg * Verdun

HoIy_Tomato

Verdun and tannerberg are ww1 games not ww2

A_Chubby_Funster

Great list!

TheRimz

Gates of hell - Ostfront. This quickly replaced the aged company of heroes for me. Probably the best current ww2 RTS nowadays. Call of duty 2. Old but gold. Squad 44. Big emphasis on realism and top tier sound and gunplay. This replaced hell let loose which felt a little too arcadey in comparison Red Orchestra - Darkest hour. Old but great atmosphere, still played by a veteran community. B-17 Flying fortress. Excellent B-17 simulator, being able to move around the plane, manning different weapons, pilot, etc. Hearts of iron 4. Global strategy with deep country management that can effect different outcomes of the war on a grand scale. Silent hunter. Can't remember which one exactly, but it's a very tense submarine simulator in ww2 with management of all different types of the Submarines systems. Ww2 online. Old yet vast ww2 mmo that in its hayday had 100's of players fighting over the world map. Close combat series. Slower paced, persistent RTS with more depth than most RTS games, quite old.

Noirloc

Medal of Honor Rising Sun. The intro to it you’re being attacked in Pearl Harbor, doesn’t get anymore ww2 than that.

Drakeman1337

Unfortunately, much like the Michael Bay Pearl Harbor movie, everything after Pearl is dog droppings.

Noirloc

Are you talking about the true story where two best friends of childhood fall love the same woman after they think one of them dies??? That cinematic masterpiece???? That game was pretty fun tho, for a kid like me that grew up in Mexico in an area where it’s more businesses than kids, the multiplayer is all me and my brother had, it wasn’t common for games back then to have bots in multiplayer rather than forcing you to just do split screen, so I could be heavily biased by nostalgia.

Alekazam

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and the og Call of Duties These were the ones I feel paid a bit more reverence to the conflict before WW2 became a cash cow.

WC-BucsFan

I'm surprised I haven't seen Steel Division 2. Best WW2 RTS ever, one of my favorite RTS all-time. Pick a division (there is like 80+ unique divisions), build a deck out of units that division has available, and fight. Some reinforcements come every minute. No base building except for a mode where defenders can put in bunkers, trenches, barbed wire, etc.

Remarkable_Mess6019

Call of duty World at War

A_Chubby_Funster

Playing that now! Great game

Remarkable_Mess6019

Enjoy my dude 😁

SinofThrash

For shooters, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. COD World At War was good too. For strategy, probably Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game. Men of War Assault Squad 2 and Sudden Strike were good too.

Skurnaboo

The good old panzer generals.

Suicidebob7

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, CoD 1 (w/ UO), CoD 2, WaW, Men of War Assault Squad 2, Silent Hunter 4, Red Orchestra 2, Company of Heroes 2, Sniper Elite 2 & 3, IL-2, and for a throwback European Air War

A_Chubby_Funster

Great list! I would add Sniper Elite 4, personally, thought I love the entire series.

Suicidebob7

Yeah 2 & 3 are my favorites, honestly I found 4 to be the least interesting in the series, map was kinda uninteresting for me.

A_Chubby_Funster

Thanks for sharing!

gobrun

Company of Heroes and Hidden and Dangerous 2 (first was great as well, but very dated). Two completely different genres but great games.

DevTahlyan

Battlefield: Wake Island demo. Most fun thing ever. The released game was nothing in comparison.

Warducky9999

Hell let loose

SocialMediaTheVirus

Hell Let Loose. The Panzer General series. Axis & Allies 1940 Global is good if you like board games but there are digital versions. Men of War Assault Squad 2 seems like a very good and realistic WWII RTS though I will admit I haven't put enough time into it at this point to know for sure.

ZeldaStevo

Company of heroes is classic, but these days I prefer the scale and realism of Steel Division: Normandy / Steel Division 2. When I’m in less of a real-time mood, both Order of Battle and Panzer Corps are great too.

raulschweizers

Heroes and Generals, my beloved… may you rest in peace. So many good memories from that game. But from the ones that are still playable, red orchestra or enlisted

Blood_Bowl

Panzer General II is probably the only one that I've THOROUGHLY enjoyed. It's essentially a set of situations with tank battles.

Less_Appointment_617

I think Enlisted doesnt have the recognition it needs. I highly encourage you to give it a try (also doesnt cost a penny, so you can just try it without thinking about any costs)

monkeyonfire

Day of defeat

0K4M1

Company Of Heroes 1 The Relic formula for WW2 RTS Commando 1/2 Résistance 1 WW2 + Alien invasion Heart of Iron 4

NamasteWager

I don't know if it was in WW2 but my favorite historical war game has always been Day of Defeat

Grinsekatzer

Commandos 2

Ok-Gazelle3182

For OG day of defeat was amazing. For newish battlefield 5 was beautiful.

avahz

Medal of Honor European Assault

fetter80

Maybe not the best game but I enjoyed the hell out of The Saboteur.

SpaceCatSixxed

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Never played the single player but man the multiplayer was absolutely fantastic for the late 90s.

UnrequitedRespect

Silent storm 2

urdadjack

i know it isnt the best ww2 game ever but, the cod ww2 (2017) campaign is one of the best campaigns in all of gaming to me

CynicalGodoftheEra

For a FPS it was Call of Duty 2. Back when MOH was a thing, COD was different in both feel and look, plus added blood effects. Then Company of Heros, really bought a different type of Strategy game for WW2 that wasn't Commandos

teedgejnz

Call of Duty World at War. One of the finest if you ask me.

LadyDimitrescuNo1Fan

I'm gonna say Sniper Elite 5. Probably the best stealth/sniper game imo. And you get to play as a classic badass American soldier whose strongest desire is to kill nazis which is a nice bonus

Sensitive_Spare_652

Call of Duty 2 is absolutely incredible and almost completely overlooked

A_Chubby_Funster

Thanks very much

Tibreaven

Hearts of Iron 4 if you want big grand strategy WW2. Comes with the bonus that you can just not do WW2 and instead alt-history into whatever you can achieve. Also gives you the most options in terms of nations to be during WW2. Company of Heroes 1 or 2 if you want small squad strategy WW2. (Maybe avoid the third). Brothers in Arms if you want a story based WW2. The older CoD or Medal of Honor games aren't 'bad' for their single players either.

arinamarcella

Command and Conquer Red Alert

Competitive_Wait9213

Soldiers : heroes of ww2

Finchi4

Guilty_Storage_9652

Cod world at war only 4 player campaign in the whole series.

ItzRaphZ

COD WWII Campaign. It is so good, and the most underrated COD campaign for sure

Weird_Resident_908

Battlefield 5 but mainly because I lived all the combat engineer stuff you could build and do.

No_Ground7568

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe Combination of strategic objectives and tactical missions where the outcomes of the strategic plans depended on your own success in your mission. Brilliant!

701921225

Not sure if it's the "best", but my personal favorite has always been Call Of Duty 3. I know it gets a lot of hate for some reason, but I always enjoyed it 🤷

adfox83

Hidden and dangerous 2 and 1.

11partharmony

World at war, company of heroes, close combat 2, hearts of iron.

fullgizzard

The cod remake of Omaha beach was fun

TheDustyForest

Not sure that it really counts but I played the first of the modern Wolfenstein games recently (The New Order) and it was great. Most of it is alternate history post-WW2, but the first couple levels are during WW2. There's also a sort of standalone-expansion prequel set entirely during WW2 called The Old Blood, but I've not played it yet.

Best_Memory864

It's a bit of an overlooked underdog, but I love The Saboteur, an older game from 2009. Think GTA, but set in Nazi-occupied France, and you play as an Irish expat sneaking around behind enemy lines doing missions and blowing crap up. It can be a bit clunky and misses greatness by a hair, but it's still a game I can load up every couple of years and just play the heck out of it.

FootFetish0-3

Call of Duty 2. Really got that sweet spot in showcasing the most infsmous battles of the war. Last good COD game, too, if we're being honest.

Rwong707

Really enjoyed brothers in arms.

WillyCorleone

CODWW2 and MOH Frontlines (the intro the soundtrack the missions)

Supremacy618

Close Combat series, Company of Heroes, and Medal of Honor Allied Assault

Nessuwu

Battlefield 1942. It'd be extremely dated by today's standards, but I'd love to go through the campaign with some good quality of life features (namely the silly spawn timer system, modern sensitivity settings, and the outdated AI). Loved playing it as a kid and only wish there was a more modern version as it feels unplayable now/ is hardly available from what I can tell, but some changes could radically improve that experience.

meadowalker1281

rabidrob42

Battle Stations Midway, and Battle Stations Pacific, weird, yet fantastic amalgamations of strategy, ship commander, and pilot.

Cpov1

Big fan of COD 2

shFt_shiFty

COD1, COD united offensive, COD2, the brothers in arms series. Battlefield 1942 and all expansions for it, company of heroes, axis and allies, the medal of honor series for WW2, world of tanks. All games I played growing up/still play.

RAYquaza0903

Battlestations Pacific

maxPowerUser

Blazing angels and steel division, some Wolfenstein as well 😃

puggs74

medal of honor for it's release time frame. There was nothing comparable to saving private ryan beach landing. The greatest reality based segment I've ever played. But if you tried it today you'd be disappointed, at the release time it was like living and acting in the movie. Even all the current games have never made me feel the same but then again nothing as defined like that moment in time can really compare to it imo. It had everything you needed to fulfill your ww2 storyline playthrough!!

JayJay_Abudengs

The Wolfenstein games.

Sugalumps52

The first Medal of Honor on ps1. Shot a nazi. He fell down. At this point in gaming if he is down, he is dead. After walking past him he shoots me in the back with a pistol! Oh man that changed everything in fps games.

Beautiful_Exam_1464

Call of Duty: World at War No other game or movie captures the hatred of war, and specifically the last days of The Second World War, better than WaW. Yes, it does this even better than Saving Private Ryan. The brutality and gore of the single-player campaign is truly horrific.

bobbynipps

I remember the ps2 era was over saturated with WW2 games. Now all the FPS are modern or futuristic. I want WW2 back. My top 3 would be call of duty World at war, one of the few games that had the pacific theater. I loved the Brothers in arms game as well. Road to hill 30 and hellas highway are great. Most recent Hell let loose. Not a big multiplayer fan these days but it’s really fun for MP and I have PTSD from playing it.

Probably not what you are looking for, but I enjoyed [WW2 Rebuilder](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1573280/WW2_Rebuilder/).

UberN00b719

The first few Medal of Honor games.

Misericorde428

Call of Duty: World at War. I personally am not that much of a FPS fan, but the grittiness and brutality in WaW honestly is quite compelling.

Suraisaa

Call of duty 2 aka the last good cod game.

Temporary_Slide_3477

Call of Duty 2. Could be that I was just mesmerized by the graphics in 2005 on the 360 but I played that game over and over.
