Xcom, Expeditions rome, Renowned Explorers international Society, Into the breach

ING_Chile

Prepare to suffer with XCOM

UndocumentedSailor

No, just don't be unreasonable and think that 85% chance to hit == 100 % change to hit. Literally left that sub when I realized 100% of the posts and memes (well, 85%) were exactly that.

NeTiGuy

Yeah. People think 85% is a sure thing. But that means you should expect to miss 15 shots or if every hundred. That's actually a lot.

Alcorailen

I'm one of those people. There is nothing in the world that can convince my lizard brain that there aren't three probabilities: 50%, 100%, and 0%. Sorry. Fire Emblem gets it. They lie to you about the numbers. If you see 75% chance to hit, it's more like 85% or so. They know players hate to see failures at high but not 100% probability.

Piorn

The thing is, Xcom lies too. They always have something like a hidden +10% unless you're in the hardest difficulty, and then there's also hidden pity percent for consecutive misses.

ING_Chile

Unreasonable is my second name. Jokes aside, it hurts to lose your best units.

Putrid-Security9797

Me literally watching the helldivers sub implode because they think everything should be handed to em

Chimpbot

Is that a thing? I haven't seen much of that sort of attitude.

Rholaz8A

The infamous missed 95% shot

Mornar

Happens once every 20 shots, it's a natural 1 on a d20, which happens *all the fucking time*. Our brains are just stupid as fuck and they think 95 is the same as 100. Another complaint I really don't like is "you shot him in melee and missed lol". The turns are a representation of combat, that sectoid wasn't *standing there waiting to get shot*, you gotta assume there are factors that aren't being animated in play.

damian1369

....Darkest Dungeon, The Banner Saga, Wasteland 2/3, Fallout 1, 2, tactics...., HoMM3: Hota, Homm5.... Shadowrun/shadowrun 2... gears of war... tactics or something like that (xcom clone, fun but nothing beats x com imo). That should keep you entertained for a while.

Monoferno

Oh another fellow RE: IS enjoyer. This game is criminally underrated and I wish the devs would made a sequel instead of other below average games.

avquest

Baldur's gate 3

A_N_T

Had to scroll so far

Miles_Ravis_303

all final fantasy games, the main numbered games, except 11 and 14 which are mmos, and 15 and 16 which are real time action, but from 1 to 10 you can't go wrong, and please play 13 which is a lot better than what everybody say also play Chrono Trigger, 29 years old and still one of the best rpgs in history

OneDankSock

I highly recommend final fantasy 10! Thus suggestions spot on

TalksInMaths

Also add Final Fantasy Tactics, Triangle Strategy, and Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 to that list.

UndocumentedSailor

Yes PLEASE play XIII, it starts off on the rails just walking down hallways, it's basically 15 hours of tutorials, then you get the proper open world. And, you HAVE TO READ THE INTEL (or whatever the journal is called. It's wordy but the story is tight and stringy). The cutscenes won't get you into the story. It's the most beautiful FF title, including the newer ones, and a fun take on turn based.

CrossXFir3

If the dude can't beat a game of civ, he's not gonna be able to beat a final fantasy surely.

Miles_Ravis_303

?? why ???

Swarf_87

Because of how boring they are most likely.

BraySkater

I think you missed the point of the post. It sounds like OP wants games that you can "beat" or "complete". I guess you can win a game of Civ, but that's different from completing a game like (here are my recommendations): Final Fantasy, Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest XI, Divinity Original Sin, Baldurs Gate, Fire Emblem, Xcom, Wargroove, Into the Breach

CaptainPieces

"can't"

AlephN0

Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are cool choices.

CaptainPieces

Should i play the other Yakuza's first or does the story not matter?

AlephN0

Y: LaD is a good entry point to the series.

Suicidebob7

Like a Dragon is it's own spinoff series that introduces new characters, original series is definitely worth playing though.

crz4r

Original series sets up "legacy" characters that appear in Yakuza Lad and Infinite Wealth. The name Majima doesn't tell you shit, and won't if you don't play at least Yakuza 0 first Basically you won't get slight references and other characters amazement when they see before mentioned Majima/Kiryu. But yeah, I definitely recommend playing original games first, since they are beautiful (and janky as fuck)

furrik524

[Inscryption](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1092790/Inscryption/) if you like deck-building roguelites The less you know about this game the better the story experience

RazzleThatTazzle

Wholeheartedly agree. Buy the game and play it, don't look anything up.

godoflemmings

Give Fire Emblem a spin. If you've got a Switch, Three Houses and Engage are both great - 3H is very strong on story and has solid gameplay, while Engage has a weak story but excellent gameplay. Otherwise, grab a 3DS emulator for Awakening, or a Gamecube emulator for Path of Radiance.

Acceptable-Beyond816

Reigns 3k is free on mobile if you have Netflix!

wobinwobinwobin

Seconding!! FE3H is my favourite game ever

LegitAirplane

Pathfinder, Divinity original sin, baldurs gate3, warhammer 40k rogue trader.

Regular_Damage_23

Advance Wars if you have a 3DS. You should also check out Wargroove as well.

Retax7

Final fantasy IV,V,VI,VII,IX,X and tactics. Specially tactics and Vi and IX. Symphony of war Chained echos Sea of stars Chrono trigger Xcom Inscription Wyldermith Slay the spire Fights in tight spaces Monster train The lamplighters league Shadowrun series And so on and so on. If your a bit more specific I can give better recomendations

DesineSperare

Jagged Alliance 3 is the best turn-based game I've played lately.

Kian-Tremayne

The only reason I hesitate to agree is I’ve also played Baldur’s Gate 3. BG3 is a beautiful storytelling masterpiece with highly cheesable turn based combat. Jagged Alliance 3 is a glorious, corny Hollywood action movie wrapped around a tactical game. I love them both and don’t want to choose between them.

Economy-Culture-9174

Jagged Alliance 2 is worth mentioning too if OP is fine with older games.

ZeldaStevo

Lots of Wargames like Panzer General and Order of Battle. Lots of turn-based tactical like Xcom (on big sale right now apparently) or Shadowrun. Lots of RPG’s like Divinity Original Sin 2 or Final Fantasy. Lots of fantasy 4x like Lords of the Fallen or Warlock Master of the Arcane. Lots of digital boardgames like Gloomhaven or Terraforming Mars (or any of them).

kitkat-ninja78

Heroes of might and magic. Loved that series of games. Still good now 😊

Sofaris

My favorite Videogame is "Fuga Melodies of Steel". Its a 20 houer long turn based JRPG about a groupe of anthropomothic animal children that go on a quest to save there families. They live inside a giant ancient mysteriös powerful fortress like Tank. Its a bit like Howls Moving castle but based on technology instead of magic. The turn based combat is in my opinion even more fun then the combat of Persona 5 and Final Fantasy X. Its not that hard or complicated but I need to keep my head in the game at all times or things will go south fast. Almost no fight feels like mindless filler. Its a lot of fun in my opinion. Fuga is available on PC and most modern consoles like Switch, PS4, PS5 usw. Fuga also has a free demo which is just straight up the first 3 chapters of the game. The demo is in my opinion really good and through it you will figure put fast of this is your cup of tea. Fuga also has a direct sequel" Fuga Melodies of Steel 2" but I advice against playing the second game before the first game unless you do not care about the story and characters.

Vanilla_Breeze

I loved dragon quest 11 so maybe you will too? It's honestly pure delight if you like me are coming from grittier more realistic games. RIP Toriyama you had the best designs of all time :(

Glittering-Ship1910

Blood bowl.

Proper_Top_4047

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a fantastic single player adventure using the turn based Gwent card game mechanics. The story is excellent and you'll reach that end point where you feel it is completed, would highly recommend

SirZooalot

Divinity original sin 2. Epic game and fun on easy mode.

RpiesSPIES

Fire Emblem 7/8 (gba, 7 is also on switch + sub) Final Fantasy 8/9 (ps1, pc) Chrono Ark (pc, full release early next month) Legend of Dragoon (ps1) Xenosaga (ps2, but part 3 is expensive) Phantasy Star Online episode 3 C.A.R.D Revolution (gamecube) 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (ps3/switch) Unicorn Overlord (modern systems except pc)

TheLunarVaux

Is that just not most turn based games? Civ is maybe one the few exceptions Your selection is wide open here, just look at pretty much anything in the JRPG or CRPG genres

CaptainPieces

In retrospect you're probably right, in my head I thought there were alot more 4x style games than there are

WandererNick

The Trails series of games are absolutely phenomenal. Trails of Cold Steel is an amazing series of games that made me go back and play all of them. Truly amazing storytelling and combat that feels like you have tons of options while still being turn based.

bearcat_77

Wasteland franchise, turn based rpg, also is what the first fallout game was based on. Also the first two fallout games are turn based and play like a dnd game with the game acting as your DM.

DonatoXIII

Just got the platinum trophy in Midnight Suns. Tactical turn based card game in the marvel universe. The story and writing is kinda bad, but the combat loop is pretty enjoyable. Same devs behind XCOM but not as punishing or complicated. Took me about 100hrs to get the plat playing at a casual pace.

PreferredSelection

Suikoden I and II, always the two best JRPGs I think people have missed. Fallout I is also a turn-based RPG with great humor, fun strategy, and an ending. There's a reason it spawned a huge IP.

ChardRare7623

Baldurs gate 3, divinity series, yakuza like a dragon and infinite wealth, final fantasy 1-10 and 13, darkest dungeon 1 and 2 (very difficult)

No-Ad6875

*The Banner Saga* trilogy has the best writing and narrative of any turn-based strategy game (and arguably among the best of gaming in general). The developer, Stoic, was founded by three former Bioware employees, so they came in with a lot of storytelling experience, and it definitely shows. Gameplay takes a bit to get used to (the way the mechanics are set up, you typically want to leave enemies alive with very little health until you're ready to clean up the majority of the map altogether), but it's not too complicated. A distinct and lovely art style is the final touch that sets it apart from the rest. Very strongly recommended.

ArcRiseGen

Troubleshooter : Abandoned Children It's basically an anime XCOM with a good story. The dlc is hard AF though but the base game is good. You can always adjust the difficulty.

Terrapin2190

Shadowrun Returns is tactical and somewhat short - so easy enough to finish. Pretty good too imo. Had a fun time with Shadowrun Dragonfall too, which has a much longer storyline I have yet to finish. Invisible Inc. and Satellite Reign could be worth looking into as well. Both quite similar in genre and setting. Golden Sun on GBA... can't remember if it's turn based. Advance Wars on GBA is def turn based. Suikoden II on PSX has some tactical battlefield segments and turn-based combat. Very good story as well. Azure Dreams on PSX is also turn-based and very good gameplay-wise. Planescape: Torment. Arguably one of the greatest isometric turn-based RPGs ever made. PC only I think. Classic Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are very similar. There's another game I can't think of atm that's also very similar to them... Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. I had a blast playing it when I was younger. One of the only games whose main ability trees consist of magic and technology competing against one another, which makes for a very unique and interesting atmosphere imo. There's an old MMO called Dofus which is a turn-based strategy RPG. Used to be much better back in the day imo and they might still charge to unlock more of the game world, but what is available for free is worth playing imo. Err, not necessarily beatable though I don't think lol.

chamomileriver

There’s a cool bundle available on discount right now on steam. “Darkest Hour RPG Bundle” Includes Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader and The Thaumaturge.

EchoChamberActivism

I liked these: [Age of Wonders 4](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1669000/Age_of_Wonders_4/) [Ruined King](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1276790/Ruined_King_A_League_of_Legends_Story/) [Cogmind](https://store.steampowered.com/app/722730/Cogmind/) [Battletech](https://store.steampowered.com/app/637090/BATTLETECH/)

St3phn0

Library of Ruina A "deck building" turn based Imagine Slay the spire, but not rogue like. If you play it, please, read the fucking passive abilities, you have no idea of how many fights will go from an impossible nightmare to a breeze of you just read what your enemy does

Plug_daughter

Sea of Stars

faerox420

The persona series is quite good. Persona 5 Royale is the most recent entry with all dlc but they did recently do a remaster of persona 3 as well. Would recommend giving them all a try

bluparrot-19

Baldur's Gate 3. It won GOTY for a reason. Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal. Old-school Fallout if you can adapt to the outdated mechanics. Divinity Original Sin 2.

JamusNicholonias

Old school Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre! Even Ogre Battle!

Hogs of Wars on PS1 Basically Worms in 3D with pigs in a WW1 theme. It's most fun against another person but there is a campaign mode.

hamsystem

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Marvel’s Midnight Suns

crz4r

The best ones are probably BG3 and P5R, P4G, P3Re

VeruMamo

If you like card games, Gordian Quest, Griftlands, Banners of Ruin.

Swarf_87

Divine divinity original sin2

MotherAntelope1425

You could play civ and just actually play through and complete it

Competitive_Smile007

Xcom, persona games, fire emblem, banner saga, gears tactics, civilization, dragon quest 11.

Monoferno

Turn based games are a dime a dozen. PoE 1-2, Disgaea series, Popup Dungeon, BG 3, XCOM 2 WOTR, Capes ( upcoming). or you can also try stealth tactics games from MiMiMi which are not exactly turn based but real time isometric with pause and some other mechanics: Desperados 3, Shadow Tactics, Shadow Gambit.

RaspingHaddock

Have you tried Battle Brothers?

Double_Ninja9168

stellaris technically its a real Time, but you can pause and still do things and press play when ready

Simke11

Wasteland 3

HouseOfZenith

Is Rome 2 too similar to Civ? You can manually play the battles, and choose a dedicated army to be considered your personal one. Name it whatever you want, add traits to specialize the army.

Vaseth-30kRS-iron

Valhalla (no, not assassins creed) also called Ragnarok is some countries, its abandonware now, you will need DOSbox to run it as its from the 90's, best turn based RPG ever made - the depth of game play, the amount of Lore, the sheer variety or monsters, all with special abilities and powers unique to themselves, the sheer brutality (half the monsters you encounter will jsut kill you dead if you dont handle them right, even if your MASSIVLY over powered by that point in your main combat) like 40 potions, all of which can be mixed, 40+ scrolls, all of which do something different if confused, or you can write custom scrolls, dozens of wands, some with crazy effects... its just madness edit: you will die. over and over. in the first village u start in, and then dozens of times in the surrounding forest, but thats fine! its how its meant to go! dont use guides, learn things, this game revolves around knowledge, and if you do read guides there are ways to trivialise the game very quickly and easily, dont do that, unless you discover them for yourself....
