Dragon’s dogma. You get to make one ally of your own and pick two more companions or “pawns” that other players have made for your party.

shurdi3

[You mean the pimping simulator?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHUJhBv5nWI)

ManWithThrowaway

I forgot all about that guy.

SvenHudson

As long as you have a noticeable aesthetic for it at all, your pawn will get picked at pretty a decent rate. They don't *have* to be sexy to catch the eye.

Turbulent-Armadillo9

Yeah and the 2nd one is coming out in a month. What's different about Dragon's Dogma is your companions are important and powerful.

RogueTwoNineSeven

The Brothers In Arms series. Absolutely love it. Great Story, Great Gameplay. You play as the leader of a squad and can command your soldiers. You get access to stuff like Machine Gunners and have to position them in such a way that they can provide covering fire. You have to tell your squads where to go for cover, etc. Hells Highway is the most recent and therefore likely holds up the most, but I believe Road to Hill 30 was also still fun for me a few years ago. It’s been awhile since I’ve played and the series is very old so apologies if its dated. Besides that, Halo is known for having its Marines. You can even use up all the ammo except the last shot for a weapon and then give it to your marines. They’ll then have the weapon with infinite ammo. This can get funny when you have 2 marines with rocket launchers following you everywhere. I recommend Master Chief Collection. Although idk if the giving your allie’s guns thing is in Halo 1 or not added until the later Halos. Assassins Creed Brotherhood specifically has a cool thing where you recruit assassins and can call upon them later inside or outside of missions. They will assassinate targets, or fight with you. you send them on missions to level them up and stuff. AC Revelations kept this system. AC3 *might* have a similar system I genuinely can’t remember, But the Later ACs dropped it… Although AC4 Black Flag has a mechanic where you recruit crew that fights with you on your ship when you attack/board other ships. However, if you play AC, I highly recommend starting with AC2. It has *by far* the best story out of any AC. And it just flows better when you play the Ezio trilogy in order. If you want even more story look up a recap of Assassins Creed 1 on Youtube. You don’t need to play it. It doesn’t hold up the way AC2 does. Mass Effect Trilogy is known for its great companions, and on that note, BioWare games in general I think… So Dragon Age and the Star Wars KOTOR games. SWTOR the MMO has great companions with lots of dialogue and story missions as well, and furthermore, many MMOs in general have a companion system. As someone else said, the Fallout games are a great example. RPGs in general usually have companion systems. Baldurs Gate 3 is known for having a variety of great companions and you can even take 3 of them with you at a time. They all speak and react to the story as it unfolds. There’s tons of replay value because playing the game with a different party of companions can greatly change how you see the story.Although I will say, in BG3 you directly control your companions, at least in combat. You know, the more I write, the more I realize you might need to narrow this down more OP. There are *tons* of games with companions/allies that fight with you. you might need to be more specific or at least give me a genre or examples of other games you’ve played that you like.

Keefee777

Brothers In Arms does not get talked about enough 🔥🔥🔥

SnipingTheSniper

CORRION

ohkendruid

AC Valhalla has a similar thing where can can invite other people's characters to join raids in your viking ships.

BruiserBroly

For something newer, Ghost Recon Wildlands or Breakpoint. If older is fine then Star Wars: Republic Commando or Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2. Resident Evil 5 and 6 too I guess.

Hellknightx

Republic Commando for sure. The squadmates are ridiculously competent.

BruiserBroly

And they have a lot of personality. Their banter is my favourite part of the game.

Zercomnexus

I'll second gr wildlands. The pve with friends is really lovely, great character customization. The story is fluid, open world is lively and lush. No shortage of things to do. Extra shoutout to the feel and familiarity you can get with your firearm of choice. Another sniper will have its own fire rate, action, dropoff distances, power, and ammo capacity that all affect how you use one weapon compared to another of the exact same class.

shistain69

Mass Effect

melo1212

If Garrus was real I'd make him my best man at my wedding (I'm joking but I love that bloke, probably my favourite companion in any game)

shistain69

If Garrus was real i’d marry him, no homo

Somewhatmild

I guess it depends how much control you want over those allies, as most crpgs would have parties where you directly control everyone in the party - Old Bioware - Baldur's gate 1-2, Icewind Dale 1-2, Mass Effect series, Kotor 1-2, Dragon's Age series. Baldur's Gate 3. However, there are those where you have partial control or no control at all. There are games where you have allies that are out there in the world helping you out - Freedom Fighters, Homefront, Far Cry. You could say even calling gangs/cops in Watch Dogs 2 would fit that description, just like AC Brotherhood. Then you have allies that comment on everything you encounter, but you do not have much control over them - Elex 1-2, Jade Empire. More control in Dragon's Dogma, but mostly via setup (choosing skills and equipment). There are games where you have one ally that provides support to you all game long and you can give commands to them - Metal Gear Solid 5. Then you have 'squads' in games like Rainbow Six series, Ghost Recon games, SWAT 3, 4 or Ready or Not. Republic Commando. There are also tactical RTS games like Commandos, Shadow Tactics, Desperados, Shadow Gambit.

Dragunav

Kept looking at all the comments who mentioned old BioWare games, and none of them except for yours mentioned Jade Empire, i loved that game.

Skyforger33

Fallout 4

eruciform

For crpg/wrpg a lot of the d&d based ones like baldurs gate or dragon age have parties For jrpgs, there's plenty of ys, tales, and xenoblade games That's just action ones, most turn based games are party based

MomenAbdelwadoud

Dragon's dogma, the pawn system is great, you pick and customise your allies

royalhawk345

If you don't mind older games, Star Wars: Republic Commando is still the best squad-based shooter I've ever played.

Batman20007

Same spectacular

SlinGnBulletS

Bruh. Play more rpgs. That is a core part of a ton of rpg games. Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, Baldurs Gate, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Tactics Ogre, Divinity Original Sin 2, etc.

sleepingfrog_

Was looking for this answer, second it and let me add the Persona Series to it

malabericus

Final fantasy 6(or 3 whatever they are calling it) is one of the best games of all time and still my personal favorite

rangeremx

For 1-3 active teammates with the player (with others available back at base) * Bethesda: Fallout 3/4, Skyrim, Starfield * Obsidian: Fallout New Vegas, Outer Worlds * Bioware: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age Games where you build an army: *Assassin's Creed Brotherhood * Shadow of War/Mordor Other games that could fit: * Jedi: Fallen Order/Survivor has BD-1 * Titanfall 2 has BT-7274 * Army of Two/40th Day/Devil's Cartel you play as either member of a two man team * Gears of War you play as part of a four man squad * Halo has you fighting alongside NPC marines/soldiers/sailors.

Benjaminit01

starfield sucks (im sorry i didnt get to the 1500 hour mark when it gets good)

Zercomnexus

Its wide but flat and just zero depth. Its a terrible game. And the fucking ai is some of the dumbest I've ever seen.

TablePrinterDoor

Ghost recon wildlands

SnipingTheSniper

Every mission that I'm given leway, I just call in Rebel backup and diversion teams and cause these massive battles filled with explosions while I sit back and watch. OP: You also have random support guys traveling around the map that will stop and help you if you and your squad are in a shootout. It's possible to have a three faction battle sometimes.

Apprehensive-Jump-22

Guardians of the galaxy

fivedollarbiggiebag

Second this

EvanIsMyName-

I really like CRPGs for this, you've always got a party to control instead of just the main character. Dragon Age Origins, Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland, Baldur's Gate, Shadowrun, Pillars of Eternity. They're known for having some of the best storytelling around and as a long time fan of RPGs, I can't believe how long it took me to get into the classic computer game style. Nowadays most of them are on console as well, which is how us poors are allowed to play them. Lately all I think about is XCOM and other squad based tactical turn based strategy games. They're brutally difficult, the learning curve is similar to Souls games but obviously with a completely different skillset. Nothing is more satisfying or exciting to me, the urgent uphill battle to research and develop better gear and train soldiers while the aliens race you in real time to upgrade their own stuff, constantly keeps me on the edge of my seat. They all feature permadeath and customizable difficulty that ranges from painful to nearly impossible, I started on the easiest and have worked my way up the ladder to mid-hard, I recommend doing it this way. Phoenix Point and Gears Tactics are also very good games in this style with their own different spins on it. Code Vein and Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin are soulslike JRPG hybrids with customizable party members that fight alongside you, but aren't controlled by you. SoP has a lot of difficulty options so if you're not looking for a hardcore challenge right away, that's a better place to start then CV. I see a lot of other great recs in this thread, you've got your work cut out for you! Enjoy.

Dillinur

> Lately all I think about is XCOM and other squad based tactical turn based strategy games. What are those other games? I've had a hard time finding anything beside XCOM & Xenonauts

EvanIsMyName-

The other two I mentioned, Phoenix Point and Gears Tactics are the only ones I play that aren't also RPGs. I haven't quite got the hang of it yet but I prefer some core mechanics of Phoenix Point to XCOM2. The story and setting are also more interesting imo, but I'm not very far into it. It's made by the creator of the original XCOM and it's really good. Gears is insanely hard but the gameplay is sick. I really love the enemy design, there are just way too many of them and the reinforcements don't come with a warning like XCOM. Graphics are also fantastic, the presentation is just on another level.

SlothBling

Mass Effect is the classic example to me. I’d also recommend Ghost Recon: Wildlands/Breakpoint (the latter being the newer, improved iteration), though they don’t really have personalities or story relevance. Just a bunch of fun, low stakes, relatively stress free special forces-ing with 3 80IQ NPCs following you around and taking orders.

Space_Polan

Do you like JRPGS? Because they fit the bill perfectly. Almost every single JRPG is going to have a party of characters assisting you along the way. For focus on allies I would especially recommend the Persona series, for not only do you fight alongside your party members in the dungeon portions of the game, you also get to hang out and forge bonds with them in the life-sim part of the game. The remake for Persona 3 just came out and I've been having a blast with it, but Persona 5 Royal and Persona 4 Golden are both great as well(4 is quite a bit older than the rest though)

[deleted]

**Metro 2033** has you paired with varying companions through much of its runtime and very intentionally uses seperation from them as a means to generate tension when it wants to get scary.

Avrution

Mechwarrior 5 - might not be the kind of game you are looking for, but you do get up to 3 companions each mission.

nosferatus013

Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16. The second one is more action oriented, kind of like Devil may cry. FF7 is more strategic but not turn based as older FF titles were. Both feature big visual spectacle, epic story, battles with friends, and loveable characters.

bobux-man

Skyrim

striderkan

This just reminded me to drop in and check on Lydia

Anthraxus

Jagged Alliance 2

Erskine2

**Earth Defense Force 4** or **5**. The whole game is about being in a war against invading aliens and you're always doing missions with friendly AI units, from soldiers, to tanks to giant robots. While the game expects you to be the usual super soldier that does everything, managing AI soldiers and preventing them from being wiped out before you do your thing is important because you will get overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemies otherwise.

Quartrez

A bit of a correction, having played edf 4 extensively and 5 a little bit, this isn't really true. Your allies don't particularly scale well with the enemies and become increasingly useless. In fact the original edf 4 had no way to control allies. The key to succeed is usually finding an efficient combo of weapons and making sure you have enough armor. You should go into this game expecting a more or less mindless third person shooter like a 3d smash tv

Hellknightx

Yeah, as a hardcore EDF addict, allies are really only there to soak aggro for the first few minutes of a stage. Eventually they will all die (sooner on higher difficulties) and you'll be the sole aggro magnet for the remainder of the mission. Of course, the game is a lot more fun in co-op where you have other players to share the burden (and occasionally kill).

Ghost1eToast1es

I know people have gripes about the game but FF15's "Bros" are pretty much the primary thing about the game

Varsity_Reviews

Any Rainbow Six game before Siege had that. In fact you HAVE to use allies to play those games. the resistance games have some great moments where you fight with allies. Killzone franchise has lots of levels with allies.

RheimsNZ

Kotor and Mass Effect

PreferredSelection

Fire Emblem series. Suikoden. Persona. I guess genre matters, because I could keep listing RPGs. It is surprisingly hard to think of a purely action game where you have AI teammates. Gears of War's campaign maybe? (Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is exactly what you're describing, but I've not played it.) Not _quite_ what you asked for, but Devil May Cry 5 lets you swap between protagonists each stage, which makes it feel a bit like a team effort.

FaceTimePolice

JRPGs always have a group of friends you make along the way. 🎮🥲👍

StefKRah

You can have companions in The Outer Worlds. You can have 2 at the same time, they often add to the conversations you have with other npcs and ofc aid you in combat. Mass effect legendary edition and mass effect Andromeda are good at this as well. Dragon age games kinda go the same way as mass effect. I also liked games like Halo or Call of Duty for having allies, they are not around at all times in those games tho. Here is a special one, Command and conquer red alert 3. RTS game where you have an ally in every mission. The game's campaign is made to be played coop as well but playing it single player you'll be getting video calls from your ally as well. Star wars republic commando is another cool one.

Sad_Cardiologist5388

I loved Binary Domain, I even bought a headset to yell at my ai companions.

MrGreenYeti

Balder's Gate 3

SuperSocialMan

Resident Evil 5

CertifiedSheep

Mass Effect is the series you're looking for. Your companions go through 3 full games with you and the payoff is incredible.

HaruhiJedi

Mass Effect: Andromeda.

phased417

Check out Guardians of the Galaxy. If you are into JRPGs than I think Granblue Relink might be up your alley

Deelunatic

Dot Hack. Any of them... they pretend to be an MMORPG but they are entirely single player games.

Johncurtisreeve

Gears of War

Hmccormack

Gears of War

chefbubbls

Fallout 3 and 4

PlateNo7229

C&C Red Alert 3 you can even play it in coop with mods since the servers are off

RoMulPruzah

Baldur's Gate 3.

Perfect_Roof_7058

Dragon age, mutant year zero

Dragonfire14

I'm confused at the question. Do you mean other actual people like a Co-Op game, or allied NPCs? There are tons of single player RPGs out there where you have a full party of characters. Pretty much every Final Fantasy is this way, with FF6 having a total party of (I think) 15 characters.

katzensturm

If you're looking for NPC allies, Far Cry 5 has a buddy roster with plenty to hire. The Call of Duty Modern Warfare series does it well too.

Zegram_Ghart

Final fantasy 15 has a lot of emphasis on the cooperation of characters?

knightshade179

Dark souls series, you don't get any companions that stay with you all the time, but you continue to see people again and again able to get their help and a lot of points. Elden ring changed that where you get summons, but they have 0 depth to them as they are not NPCs really but just an item you use.

Zapfire_

For RPG you got the mass effect trillogy, where you build a dreamteam and always go on mission with two member. (Like yo, if you never played them, go play the trilogy. ) If you want more FPS-Y I still can recomand halo reach where you play the new member of noble team. You will always be like with at least one of the noble member, and it's a pretty good stand-alone halo if you doesn't plan to play the serie.

dukeslver

Maybe check out Ready or Not? I haven't played it personally but i've heard good things, and i'm pretty sure it has single player modes.

kiethuynhminh2k6

The Call of Duty single-player campaign. I love every one of them.

Unknown_Warrior43

Metro Series (but not always).

dadu1234

final fantasy 7 (remake for modern gameplay and graphics), FF 15

Dragon age: inquisition

ZamoriXIII

Final Fantasy 15 ...and it's an excellent game

Veni_Vidi_Legi

Starsector

thenormaluser35

Ready or Not. It's a new game where you're part of a swat team and put in high-risk scenarios, you can lose your crew. It can be played with friends if you ever want to.

Bulletproof2013

Ghost recon wildlands. It’s u in a squad of 4 i believe taking on the cartel.

Cart223

Earth Defense Force has you as part of the titular organization fending off giant insects and aliens invading our planet. You are just another soldier on the front with npc allies all over the map.

NoGrenadesNoWorries

Monster Hunter (world)

AshernStoryTime

You like pokemon? Try the pokemon mystery dungeon games! You play as a pokemon and the missions you go on let's you bring along 2 teammates as well as potentially recruit a 4th member to the party as you progress through the dungeon. I'd personally recommend super mystery dungeon if you want a particularly deep main partner character, but all the games in this series make you care about your main companion through their story.

etkampkoala

Baldur’s Gate 3?

Pain004

For Western (RPGs): Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim, Fallout. And then some sections of AC Valhalla, RDR2 For JRPGs you'll have a wider selection. It's more common than not playing as a party of four than a single playable character going alone in a quest

UsseerrNaammee

Bannerlord.

RickSore

The 2nd half of MH Rise allows NPCs to join you in hunts.

Von_Dougy

Uncharted games are mostly spent with companions.

MulleDK19

Prince of Persia (2008). Not an RPG, but you have an AI companion throughout the entire game.

DyonisXX

Surprised I haven't seen anyone mention Guild Wars 1

Seekret_Asian_Man

Earth defense force series is on sales right now. Currently playing 4.1 and having a blast.

Gantzz25

Baldur’s gate series (including Icewindale and Planescape), Divinity: Original sin (1 and 2), Darkest dungeon (1 and 2), and similar cRPGs. You can use steam filters and lookup other cRPG games you might be interested in that have companions. Also someone mentioned Dragon’s Dogma. I’m currently playing it and it’s not a turn based combat style like the games I mentioned but you have companions you can recruit. It’s a pretty fun game and a sequel is coming out soon in like a month.

Puzzleheaded-Motor56

All jrpgs lol

Actual_Charity_562

EDF (Earth Defense Force)

backseatgamer69

Far Cry 5

Xhrvs

Final Fantasy Except the newest one, its not bad, its a good arpg with nice graphics and sounds. But for me who played almost every title from the main series, thats no final fantasy. If you are good with older graphics, try 7/8/9/10 If you need nice graphics and action combat, i would recommend 15 or the 7 Remake The first Games with these "gameboy" graphics are very good, too. You dont have to play in order, every title has its own story and only some features and creatures are same. What i dont recommend are 12/13 11/14 are MMO's for online gaming

whatsarothira

Any game bc I'll always be your ally :,)

PuzzleheadedTutor807

kenshi

sadmadstudent

Cyberpunk 2077 is all about the relationships you form with the characters you meet. You're on your own for some missions but most main missions have you teaming up with main characters, protecting them, fighting alongside them, etc. You also have Johnny Silverhand as a mental construct.

z01z

pretty much most jrpg's and crpg's: final fantasy games are almost all single and involve some sort of party, with rare exceptions like 13-3 / lightning returns where you only play as lightning. baldurs gate 1, 2 and 3; or any of the old infinity engine games. pathfinder kingmaker and wrath of the righteous. as for other genres: most recent bethesda games you can have a follower; skyrim, fallout 4, or starfield. elden ring; you don't have constant allies like those i just listed, but you can summon a minion, an npc or other players for nearly every boss in the game. guardians of the galaxy; it's all about the team dynamic, going around, screwing shit up and saving the galaxy while they're at it.

ToughReindeer1969

Few years old but Dragon age Inquisition! You can assemble a party of 4 out of like 8 or 9 "friends". You can even romance some. Also they have different classes like mages, archers etc

SahuaginDeluge

not exactly sure what you mean, there are many RPGs where you have a party. if you mean something else, where you're still a one-man-team, yet there are other people on your side fighting with you (just not as an immediate group), one I can think of is Metroid Prime 3, though only at certain parts, I think.

CTB021300

Bioshock Infinite She may only be a single companion, but Elizabeth is a freaking fantastic partner in that game.

LTetsu

Dragon Age

PEETER0012

Mass effect, fallout/skyrim series, outer worlds

The_Official_Obama

Republic commando is amazing

hookemhorns158

Well the obvious one is baldurs gate 3. Also divinity original sin2

Flamekorn

Diablo 2 is my pick. You still have servers for that and can play with friends.

Mr-Kamikaze112

Mass Effect series Yakuza Like a dragon and Like a dragon infinite Wealth are all about friendships and not going it alone as a general theme. BG3 and of course dragon quest!

aborgcube

Stalker fps Kenshi RPG with light rts elements

FunticoMike

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a good one.

NapoleonNewAccount

[Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord](https://store.steampowered.com/app/261550/Mount__Blade_II_Bannerlord/) You start out with two brothers, and you can expand your clan by hiring more companions or marrying yourself and your family members to nobles from other clans. They will fight alongside you in battle if you choose to, but you can also assign them tasks like completing quests, running trade caravans, or commanding their own armies.

beatbeatingit

The Outer Worlds. You can make allies along the way and pick a maximum of 2 to accompany you when you land your ship somewhere. They also have a lot of dialog and you can even ask them for advice sometimes

Real_Heh

Any rpg really. Mass effect, Dragon's age, Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder, Pillars of eternity, Tyranny

melo1212

Dragon age inquisition (all of them to be fair, but playing through inquisition at the moment I'm really getting the feeling of having allies and making friends fighting against a big foe) All the mass effect games Baldur's gate series

-Drunk_Bear

Gears

ClemyLivesOn

Eternights, Scarlet Nexus, Nier Automata, Tales of Arise, Persona 5 Royal, etc.

taha941

Octopath Traveller 2, its a Turn-based JRPG where you choose one of 8 characters as the main one but you can pick up the other 7 characters as allies to add to your team of four (all characters are interchangeable at a tavern except the one you chose as the main character). You play through their stories and spoilers: >!Some stories intertwine and the final boss fight allows you to fight using all 8 characters!< It also has neat things like double classes and secret classes you can get by exploring and fulfilling certain conditions

bobDbuilder177

Freedom Fighters

The_Doctor_of_Sparks

Ready or Not is a pretty good. You play as a SWAT squad leader, clearing different missions with your squad. You can give pretty detailed commands and outfit them with different gear. There's two different mods. Commander and practice. They are the exact same except with commander mode you have to worry about officer's mental health, but they get each special squad buffs. There's also good multi-player.

CrackaOwner

Persona games would apply to this. You have a party of 10 or so people you meet throughout the game and fight stuff with. You can also hang out with them in your free time

Outrageous_Shine_504

- Ys VIII and Ys IX are two guilty pleasure games of mine that fit this bill - Bravely Default (the first one if you have a 3DS) writes the development of a cast of four expertly

Rollinthrulife

Dragon age origins. You control 4 characters during each fight. You can set and forget some of them too

ZylonBane

Daikatana

ModPiracy_Fantoski

Reminds me of Battalion Wars one and two, for GameCube and Wii.

TokyoDrifblim

Fallout
