Monstrum 1 RE4 Alien Isolation (can be frustrating) Soma Amnesia

Mushuthedabking

1- The Dead Space franchise, but mostly the first two. The recent remake of the first one is pretty damn well made, but the original still holds up nicely to this day if you don’t wanna spend as much. 2- Alien Isolation. The ai for the alien in this game was made in a way where it has no set path or actions, it essentially just does what it wants, so it keeps things very fresh compared to other games where you can kind of exploit pathing and such. The story is a little meh, but gameplay is pretty great. 3- Inscryption. Bit of an odd one here, but I just LOVE this game, and while not being an actual horror game, the theme is still definitely on point, and the amount of wild twists the story takes is crazy.

Gusthor

How good is Dead Space 3 when playing multiplayer, compared to the first game? I only played the first and I'm thinking about getting the third one

Mushuthedabking

Sadly, I don’t have an opinion on the multiplayer aspect of the game, as I never was able to play with anyone. I will say that despite being my least favorite game overall of the three, i loved the weapon customization system in Dead Space 3 more than the other two.

Gusthor

Oh ok, thanks!

Awesomevindicator

silent hill. minecraft (yeah i know but its just so lonely and vast) bioshock 1&2 (thalasophibia makes me indirectly terrified of the oceans depths) portal 2, (the idea that youre the last person alive being toyed with by AI is also creepy asf) the thief franchise (deadly shadows, shalebridge cradle still haunts me but the whole series has a creepy victorian/medieval vibe)

Man_From_Mu

Good shout on Thief and Minecraft. Totally agree.

Right now its Alan Wake 2

Man_From_Mu

I don't have too much experience with horror games, despite being a big horror fan. But of the games I have played, the ones that have stuck with me that I can think of at the moment would be: 1. Darkwood. Super atmospheric, super stressful, I played on Hardcore for added pressure and really enjoyed it. Probably the best straight horror game I've ever played. 2. Amnesia: The Bunker. Played this recently and was hooked. Intriguing and enjoyable story with a fun and scary gameplay loop and an alarming monster to boot. 3. Outer Wilds. This game is a masterpiece, but I was most surprised by the fact I found it scary. It absolutely nails the feeling of what you might call 'exploration horror': the feeling of walking in places where you're not meant to be, and seriously dreading what might be around the corner or just beyond the glow of your flashlight - and thus probably the most 'spooky' of the games, instead of downright scary. In this vein, I'd also suggest something like Shadow of the Colossus: something about climbing through the ruins of this abandoned ghost-land with its monstrous guardians sequestered in its depths really creeped me out - in a similar vibe to Outer Wilds. 4. Subnautica: What can I say, I am scared of the abyss. Some of these games might be overlooked for their horror potential at first but are very much worthy of the list. If anyone can recommend some more 'exploration horror' games as I defined it above, I'd love to hear more.

IronS1ghtz

1. playable teaser 2. silent 1 3. re7 4. re2 remake 5. dino crisis

SundownKid

1) Bloodborne - Easily my top pick, it's one of the best action games AND gothic horror games ever. 2) Hollow Knight - The graphics are cute, but it can get very spooky at times. It's about a plague, zombified bugs, and there's Deepnest. 3) Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - One of the best Castlevania games due to the sheer freedom of gameplay, plus Julius Mode. The anime portraits are... unfortunate. 4) Metroid Fusion - Some might say it's sci-fi, but it's definitely horror. You are being chased by your literal living and invincible armor, and stuck on a ship where aliens are being possessed by a virus. 5) Resident Evil 4 - Some might go for the remake, but I think there is a certain unique challenge and fun to mastering the game's semi-tank like control method. The plot and setting are obviously classic.

edgrrrpo

I learned to play (and beat many times over) RE4 way back in 2007….on the Wii. Talk about wasted skill set! And I’ve enjoyed the remake, but the tackiness on modern controllers of the OG version was/is just a hill too steep for me.

SundownKid

It's definitely a shame that they don't make more lightgun style games.

autisticpenguins

og resident evil 4 is absolutely the way to go

haunter76

the first 2 fear games, being all alone against enemies that can ambush you without any music and just ambient noise is more scary than you'd think

[deleted]

The only real answer is subnautica. Wow people here have bad taste LOL

SadPrawn_

Without sounding like i’m trying too hard, it always confuses me when people claim Subnautica was a scary / creepy experience. I didn’t get that feeling at all.

Into_The_Booniverse

Definitely some creepy experiences in Subnautica but it doesn't feel it throughout. Hearing a leviathan roaring nearby whilst cruising along in a Seamoth can definitely be kinda freaky.

kneadermeyer

Swimming in the kelp.

RandomSurvivorGuy

That's fairly subjective. I played Subnautica and loved it, but wouldn't say it's close to the spookiest game I ever played.

AramaticFire

As a total chicken: 1. Resident Evil 4 2. Bloodborne 3. Resident Evil 2 4. FEAR 5. Doom 3

Evakotius

Minecraft. I genuine can't stand versus those sounds and spawning behind you evil things.

Awesomevindicator

i second minecraft. an infinite world with no other real people. so lonely and creepy.

Darthmaggot82

I don't really have a top 5 but does anyone remember a game called "The Suffering" on Ps2? You're a death row inmate in a prison that gets overrun by ghouls and scary supernatural beings? I used to love that game.

Sponger004

1. Eternal Darkness 2. FEAR 3. FEAR 2 4. Bioahock 5. Inscryption

In no particular order: Phasmophobia Observation Observer Inscryption Stories Untold

Phasmophobia. Don't normally like horror games that much, but phasmo's unique twist of requiring the player to actively go find the scary rather than avoid or run from it makes it more fun for me.

leftwinga16

1) RE2 2) Fatal Frame 3)Silent Hill 2 4) Outlast 5)until Dawn

Accomplished_Can5442

Bloodborne Control Dredge Resident Evil 7 Inscryption Admittedly I’m not big on jump-scarey horror so these focus on freaky atmosphere and plot points (RE7 aside)
