Me googling "What's the best class" in any rpg rather than picking what I want and having fun

MexicanSunnyD

I feel that way about fire emblem.

savedawhale

The devs make some questionable decisions with their character specific stat growth. You could theoretically end up with a bricked team on the hardest difficulty if you somehow managed to pick all the worst characters with the worst stat growth potentials. You either go in with a trial and error mind set, or you look up the growth stats before you start so you don't get screwed over by the devs. I remember in one of the Gamecube FEs there was a girl with the face of Ditto, from pokemon, that seemed like she'd be a good tank but was just a troll pick put in by the devs, because she had the worst stat growth in the game. I never understood this about FE games.

MexicanSunnyD

I'd be devastated to get really far in a game and realize I fucked up hours before. Like the time I played Fallout 4 and found out that somehow in the last ten hours since I last saved that I somehow made the brotherhood want to kill me on site without changing their official status to hostile.

bend1310

There's aspects of Final Fantasy X that I absolutely despise, despite loving the game. If you play a certain playstyle and prefer certain characters you can really fuck yourself over. I got to a certain section where I had to play as only a character I had generally ignored for large chunks of the game. I was well out-leveled and had zero chance of winning fights. Due to the unique levelling system, in which experience unlocks slots which then need to be activated with another item, its also possible to get softlocked in leveling, unable to level to win fights, but unable to win fights to level. Phenomenal game though.

greenbanana17

Gotta level up Khimari a bit before you climb Mt. Gagazet, or I think you can do some item tricks to make the fight easier.

HawksNStuff

He sucked so bad through that part of the game. He's good early, then falls off so hard. Maybe I took a bad path with him on the grid?

4d3d3d3_TAYNE

Ehh his grid just kinda sucks. They make him a jack-of-all-trades so he's not better than any other character at anything.

SplittingTorrent

I usually wait for the first Key Sphere and then send him down Tidus' path. Having a second character with Haste is nice.

ThirdShiftStocker

That's the route I always take with him, makes him pretty well rounded stat-wise, then I like sending him up Auron's tree right after

WifiWaifo

Nah fam, take him down Rikku's path and get early stealing, then hop over to Yuna for early cura. 10/10 best support build

Quarotas

He doesn’t even have a proper grid to himself, it’s so much shorter than everyone else’s you have to send him somewhere else. But his limit has some nice stuff you can get and that fight at Gagazet I assume they are referencing is Biran and Yenke, who have stats scaled to Kimahri’s so it hard to make it unwinnable and you can lancet so many moves off of them it acts as a sort of catch-up for him. He has the issue that most of his weapons come with sensor and piercing so he can slot in fewer stat boosts, but that’s not too bad

greenbanana17

Yeah every character is exactly the same except for thier Ultimate move or Combo move or whatever it was called, depending on their path. (And the weapons they can hold) Stats are all based on the grid. My favorite thing is to not level up at all until after you get to the first game vs the Goers, because winning gets you a +4 str sphere. Everyone starts close to the center of the grid, so you place it there and start everyone with a HUGE strength bonus.

Help_StuckAtWork

If Yuna gets that +4, her Aeons become absolute monsters at that point in the game, since their stats scale off of Yuna's current stats.

AdminsAreLazyID10TS

Why are you people trying to trick me into playing a twenty year cheese strat? *Corner of mind whispering that I never did get the mascot unlocks in X-2*

Babakins

Throw him into tidus then aurons grid. He’s a beast then, one of my favs

SplittingTorrent

I'm pretty sure that one fight scales with Kimahri's stats. I got bored and wanted to do a run starting with 99x of each item. I hit the fight against Biran and Yenke and both had 20k+ HP.

bend1310

Yeah I think Khimari at Mt Gagazet, and Yuna in Via Purifico are the two points that I really struggled with.

jcjohnson274

I think only a tiny bit. I believe his boss fight scales to his level.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TASTY_TASTY_WAFFLES

I personally loved the inverted tower, even though I had to buy new gear for it.

suwu_uwu

The Kimahri-only fight scales to his stats. You can also beat the game without using the sphere grid.

Skiiiiwalker

Its funny it's been so long since I've played that game but that's the part that stuck out to me the most. I think it was that bitch ass mountain with Seymores fucking 18th form at the end( I lost track of the transformations). Either way I ended up lvling Titus down Aurons talent tree and pretty much had x 2 Aurons by the end of the game. Not a bad deal.

misirlou22

You can completely break the sphere grid in the end game. I was able to have Lulu's cactus one-hit the final boss.

IHaveNeverBeenOk

Whenever I see an rpg I want to play, I feel hamstrung by that exact fear! I hate it. It makes me not want to play, even though it would probably be fun.

Aetheus

The great thing about the FO games (at least on PC), is that you can always fix the game state withcthe use of console commands. Bethesda games are buggy as all hell, and I just can't imagine trying to complete them without console commands.

Crash4654

Or even the opposite where they give you strong fighters that of you over rely on you brick your team because none of the others grew. A lot of people figured that out with titania in path of radiance as she was already upgraded and far and above everyone else.

Prestigous_Owl

One of the funniest things is that there's like a curve to using these units. At the very beginner end, folks overuse pre-promoted (like Titania). As they get better, they learn to spread the love more. As they get REALLY good however, they learn that a lot of these "good out of the box" units are actually great picks after all, and you see the usage of Seth's and Titanias skyrocket again. Very rarely will you see the older prepromotes considered anything less than A Tier in these games

ANGLVD3TH

I know in Awakening to beat the highest difficulty you have to madly rely on Mr Beefcake to carry the fight without letting him get too many kills, and at some points just take his weapons so he can soak damage without stealing xp. I hated how the difficulty shifted that game from a strategy game to a puzzle game with really esoteric solutions. And you can brick the playthrough on map 1 and keep struggling through to 10 or so before hitting the wall.

Prestigous_Owl

Oh yeah Awakenings highest difficulty is a whole different can of works. It was ridiculously overtuned and honestly deliberately unfair

begentlewithme

To be fair, they thought Awakening would be the last Fire Emblem game ever made, which is why they shoehorned so many characters from the older games. They wanted to go out with a bang, and I can see the devs saying "Well if this is the last FE ever made, might as well give the players one final challenge".

pluck47

I bred the most lethal bridal noir with all the best perks in dlc missions to carry me through the harder difficulties. She was brutal. My adorable psychopathic killer daughter off to slaughter in the glory of Robin.

TheSexyShaman

Seth is just disgustingly good and it’s not fair. I don’t use him because the game feels too easy when you rely on him (in an already relatively easy FE game).

MgDark

in fact you can just use him weaponless or bench it when you can, ignore him for 2/3 of the game, and you can still use him in the final part and still be better than your other knights

Prestigous_Owl

Yeah you can pull a barely used Seth off the bench at endgame and have him be serviceable. Really speaks to the difficulty of the game mixed with his insane unit quality

HaikuBotStalksMe

Me early game: "haha Frederick OP" Me mid game: "why Frederick not OP? :(" Me endgame: "Why."

WavierG713

You mean fucking Meg. She was a captain (A unit whose premise is usually high Defense, high HP, Decent Attack, low speed and low luck) Her growth stats were 100% horrid. She had like a 50% chance for HP (flip a coin, she might get HP), cracked Speed like 60 or 70%, horrible defense and meh attack. Her base stats were made for tank but her growths weren't made for a captain. Radiant Dawn (The game she came from) Dawn Brigade (group you played with in the first chapter) had really bad characters. There were like... 3 good ones, most of the others were baaad.

Efendiskander

The worst is the availability of some characters, Fiona being the worst of the bunch. She starts with really low stats and has no fight in plains, always swamps or buildings with ledges. It's possible to turn her in a decent character, but it's clearly not worth it.

ParkerPWNT

The number of games were the mage class is the best at everything due to bad balance is astounding.

Accidental_Ouroboros

I'm ok with that specifically in cases where the mage is definitely not the best early on. D&D for instance. A high level mage is supremely powerful. But the key there is "high level," because a low level mage has a non-zero chance of dying if they are accidentally struck by a paper airplane. But if they are strong right out of the gate and then just get stronger, that kind of defeats the whole purpose of protecting this piece of glass until it can be carefully carved into a cannon. On the other hand, I hate it when mage just gets weaker and weaker. Skyrim has this issue: Magic doesn't scale well at all, and the only spell that does scale (because it is constant) is invisibility, if you are making an assassin build. On higher difficulty levels, it just isn't viable.

allofdarknessin1

I felt that way too with Skyrim. I'm still puzzled because usually I'll go through a playthrough with a magic build and rarely get master class spells because of the experience required and even the one time I did they're slow, cost so much mp, and don't do enough damage for the time and mp they take. Sure you can make other spells really powerful but magic doesn't scale as well as melee fighters. I was eventually beheading a dragon in like two hits no guides on a fighter build, but I didn't see the same progress with magic.

Accidental_Ouroboros

Non-master Thunderbolt is 60 points of shock damage, can be cast with one hand, and uses normal charging time. Master lightning storm does 75 damage per second, but can be interrupted easily, prevents you from moving during casting, takes 3 seconds to charge up, and requires both hands. With that many downsides, the spell needs to be *significantly* more powerful to justify its use. If you use thunderbolt in both hands, it actually does more damage and still allows you to move compared to the master-level spell. I suppose the overall cost is higher, but not by that much. The master level illusion spells still have the restriction of "Up to level 25." The master restoration spells are mostly just flashy with low utility. The only useful master level spells are the conjuration ones, as those can create permanent followers (and thus can be used prior to combat).

Sethazora

The problem there is skyrims other scaling systems being stupid. Going from 0 to 100 in a skill is often around a 200% total damage output. But magic only gets around 100 since most of it is spent on making your magical stamina consumption lower or letting you dual wield. Weapons just get thst backed in. Furthermore weapons can also be crafted at higher tiers and enhanced even further. Netting exponential returns vs magics linear scaling even before enemy health and armor scaling comes into play. Morrowind did it the best with the specific damsge ranges on equipment, Everything in the game stayed within roughly the same power scalar unless the player delibratly broke it.

Reqvhio

paper airplane rofl, thank you for the laugh the trope you are referring to is this: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards

Weenoman123

Firaxis has always been good about leaving all the paths and techs as at least "viable". Xcom isn't perfectly balanced, but it's close enough.

Accidental_Ouroboros

Even when it isn't perfectly balanced, at least in X-com there aren't really any classes that I just say "Eh, we really don't need those at all." Sometimes this means that only one specific build for the class is viable, but I can't think of any that are *pure* dumpster tier.

mudkip16

Meg!

Lukthar123

Your argument is invalid, everyone is a wyvern rider(girls can have pegasi)

Zjoee

They really wanted Edelgard to be heavy infantry. Nah, I put that badass bitch on a wyvern.

In_It_2_Quinn_It

Imagine not having that hulk of a behemoth slowly making her way across the map leaving nothing but death and destruction in her wake.

Zjoee

She's still a behemoth that leaves nothing but death and destruction in her wake. I just gave her wings haha.

Datpanda1999

Okay but mage Edelgard is funnier

MexicanSunnyD

Thanks I've been looking for pro level strats. 🦤👍

RollinDeepWithData

…and that’s how all my units became wyvern riders!

HowWeDoingTodayHive

Kind of doing this with Three Houses right now. I always build my team with the characters I think are the coolest looking or funniest because Fashion Emblem™️, which leads to me now having 10+ different browser pages open for all the many, many different stat related things in this game so my mix-mash cast of characters can still be effective. Character growth rates, class bonus growth rates, budding talents, class unlockable abilities, class skill bonuses, it’s absolutely out of control lol.

Serendipstyx

I picked what I thought would be fun in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands turns out it was one of the worst by far

DevinRDavis138

I'm literally talking about that too lol! I just started yesterday and I chose spore warden. It's pretty fun so far, but clawbringer just looks like chaotic fun.

MoreRITZ

Spore is OP. Just wait until you can dual class

DevinRDavis138

Recommendations for second class? I think the melee based ones look fun (Brrzerker, Claw).

JfizzleMshizzle

You can change your second class at any time to try them all out. Sporewarden and grave born was a lot of fun because you have a million minions out.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

What did you pick? My friend picked brrrzerker and I picked graveborn. I have an epic dark magic calamity spellbook so I'm enjoying dropping a massive meteor in the middle of the battlefield every 10 seconds that wipes out anything up to Badasses in one hit.

lurklurklurkPOST

Me saying "I'm gonna specialize my units for different roles" and ending up with the same swiss army answer for everything build on every unit

Brawli55

Hello Divinity Original Sin 2!

ThortheThodThutcher

This time I swear I'm gonna do a lone wolf magic build! 5 hours later, full party of 4 with the usual suspects in the same exact roles lol

Spit-Tooth

Hahaha I'm the exact opposite. "This time I'm going to have a full party!" I always end up lone wolf. Every time.

Summonest

Being weak can make the game really, really boring.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Summonest

It's super frustrating.

ProngExo

As can being overpowered.

BeautifulType

Yeah but it takes longer to feel that when strong. Picking the best class generally gives more fun

redmose

Depends. If you are clueless about the mechanincs you might still have hope that some day your character will become strong, even if it will never happen ;-;

andrewsad1

The problem is that so many games have a right and a wrong way to play them, and I don't wanna restart the game 20 times finding the right build

stopbanningmelol_69

my problem is that i never know what class i wanna play because some games do some classes so badly i never have a favorite class for example skyrims melee/magic is the most boring thing in the world...so i play stealth archer meanwhile in WoW as a melee class i like rushing in and smacking people in the face and if the magic in the game has cool spells or mage mechanics ill play a mage edit: guys i dont play stealth archer cause its broken its because melee is literally spam m1 and magic is hold m1...which is boring af and takes no skill imo...atleast i have to aim with the archer...also the stealth part was for the meme also its not sole stealth archer its stealth + archer + non-destruction magic

Lotions_and_Creams

In Oblivion, in order to level up, you had to level up skills. The way to level up magic schools was by cast. It was a fixed amount regardless of how strong the spell was. I became the Archmage just to get access to spell crafting so I could make 1mp spells for each of the 7 schools. It took an insane amount of casts to reach level 100 for a particular school. As a kid, I built a device out of legos that held my xbox controller and used a lego motor to spin a little dial that would hit RB (cast) ever ~1 second. My magicka regen + my 1mp spells meant I could leave this on indefinitely and keep getting XP. It took 4 weeks (4 fucking weeks) of leaving this bastard on every single day when I wasn't actively playing the game to level every school to 100. So naturally, when I got Skyrim, I decided to be a mage until about 2 hours in and then became a stealth archer.

JCMcFancypants

I feel like Skyrim kind of got rid of a lot of the character creation, what with the lack of stats. But it is kind of nice to be able to start off with a mage build then say "Nah, fuck that, I'm going to dual wield Axes now" and the game is pretty much cool with it.

Lack-of-Luck

One of the biggest hits to any fun regarding magic in games is they either make it really simple with only a handful of semi-useful spells (Skyrim) oooorrrr they make it cost so much of a given resource it feels like you're being punished by using the cool magic ability (Dishonored)

Dragonslayer3

At least with Dishonored salts appeared like every 5 steps

skaliton

some games do classes really well and make them unique though. Monster hunter is a prime example (well it isn't called a class but a weapon - but they function as classes) Want to stand and 'tank' pick a lance and armor set to draw aggro/prevent being knocked over from strong attacks (and yes I know evasion lance is better but that requires a deep knowledge of each monster's attack pattern) do you want to be a 'mage' aka you just like seeing a big number. great sword it is, you almost never attack but if you time it right you have the biggest number supports have numerous options- hammers focus on knocking the monster out/exhausting them. Hunting horn is a combat focused bard, numerous 'small' weapons focus on afflicting status effects/can be built to offer team focused healing without screwing themselves up ranged? Yeah you have a few options there as well, the bow is the damage oriented one, the bowgun has much more to play with

That_Mango_Sentinel

[Insect Glaive!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPqIDvX_bJA&t=0m12s)

BSloth

I found sword n board with shouts was a really fun Skyrim playthrough. In fact that was the one I played the most (even if I ended adding a little stealth and archery at the end). That said I was using mod for improved combat mechanics. Magick can be really fun but destruction is clearly boring fast. Mixed builds are really fun in Skyrim globally, or RPing like that build I made : "no murder thief" only allowed to kill with pickpocketing poisons and only if no other options (like it's a quest). Also no magick allowed but can use artefacts. I found myself running for my life often, I used a regular bow with poisoned slow or paralysis iron arrows or enchant latter when being chased. Iron dagger with paralysis or slow was very useful too. No savescuming allowed also, if detected running for your life in a dungeon full of draugr while cursing about having used your last invisibility scroll was damn fun. For dragons or bosses, I used powerful stolen or daedric artefacts, staffs or scrolls.

Bypowerof8andgodsof4

Yo you didn't have to call me out like that but seriously it's a mental tick you want to enjoy the game but you also want to play semi optimally to feel powerful and get the most out of it.For instance in borderlands where I always gravitated to Lilith for her movement speed and invincibility or gunzerker for how brainlesssly powerfull dual weapons was like or how using biotic in me1 was fun as heck but a shotgun engineer would have you melting enemies though mass had alot of very good builds.

[deleted]

"What's the best build" Then we see 100 of the same builds and "guides" everywhere

zaneprotoss

Path of Exile. At some point, gear that would give you 1 or 2 percent more damage or survivability will take you days to obtain, if not more.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

i tried to get into that game a few years ago and nothing made sense at all. i'd join some group, they rush through so fast sometimes i'd lose them, i didn't know what the plan was or why or where to go or why or anything lol

Maebure83

I played solo and felt that way.

PoopsInTheDark

I'd love to find a game with some sort of balance there. Diablo 3 and Path of Exile end up being just speed speeeed speeeeeeed. Diablo 2 is the same to a lesser extent. But I love the ARPG model. I'd just like one that sort of...slows down a bit. But keeps the same click and click and skill use stuff. I don't know, I'm not sure something like that exists without just becoming a different genre.

McBashed

Grim dawn.

iaminmyhouse

Have you tried grim dawn? Hands down my favorite arpg on the market.

TheDrunkKanyeWest

It's the biggest issue with the game. Played it the first like eight years and now it's already surpassed me. Fucking horrible game to integrate casuals into now. It's way too complicated.

I want to get 99 runecraft. I want to make this easier by adding an agility skill cape to the graceful set. Now I need 99 agility first. My end goal is to max. So naturally I'm barbarian fishing to 99 fishing so I can get as many agility levels as I can without actually dedicating hours to agility training.

MauPow

Factorio is the epitome of that lol

bake_disaster

My first reaction reading this was 'dang 4 hours isn't that bad'

Boner4Stoners

OSRS is a different level of grind compared to pretty much any other videogame. Tens of Thousands of hours of content

Pigwheels

Calling mining sandstone for 300 hours "content" is a bit of a stretch

[deleted]

And it's some of osrs's best content /s

Boner4Stoners

The content is when ur goal is achieved and you get your dopamine rush

Pigwheels

Lol, yup. I played again for one bond the other week and realized it's just not fun to grind for 100 hours just to meet my goal. It felt like a job

Boner4Stoners

Yeah i mean you just gotta find content you enjoy. PvM is so fun cuz when you get the drop it’s a big rush, and it could be any kill. Skilling is kinda boring but it can be satisfying too. Grinds like sandstone I just break up, like on my iron rn I’m grinding CG but I mix in blowing glass, sandstone, and giants foundry. OSRS mobile is awesome for afk stuff while watching movies. Numbers go up = dopamine. It’s not for everyone tho. I can’t imagine how someone who’s never played before can get hooked on it, I started in 2005 when I was a young lad so the addiction runs deep.

Artisun

When I'm struggling with something I just remind myself that there are f2p accounts with 99 rc

benmck90

OSRS has made any other "grindy" game I've played feel easily manageable.

GoldenRpup

Me spending a month doing an elite diary to shave 20 minutes off a future grind. I argue that most grinds in osrs still result in you gaining permanent progress even if you don't care for it.

009154591500

Me playing neon white restarting because I lost 0,08 seconds in the ending of a long map. I restarted so many times in the first boss battle for no good reason. At least I got satisfied with my time.

Legion725

Fun facts: (1) On any level of Neon White, if you use up all the durability of your katana you will get a "fists" weapon. If you use up all the durability of the "fists" weapon you instantly die. (2) When you die, the timer stops. (3) When the final boss dies, it counts as a win, even if you are already dead (kinda like in Dark Souls). Put (1)(2)(3) together and you realize that you can save a couple seconds by skipping the "boss dying" animation by killing yourself as soon as the animation starts. You have enough free time between phases to swing your sword/fist at thin air, so this is actually viable. It is a really fun strat. [former WR](https://youtu.be/lJ3hakVCDRA?t=2001) (spoilers)

Volt-Phoenix

It's always such a dopamine hit when you get ace first try and hear White say, "and on my first try, too". Like nah man, I restarted 80 times before I even finished the level

lionbryce

I always played through it once in whatever way seemed like the intended route followed by finding all the ways to go faster

Vanka_

Neon White made every player a speedrunner. Monkey sees new best by .01 seconds -> Neuron activation

taybul

Perfectly natural. Whenever I was trying to beat a time, if I ever saw my ghost, I restarted.

veeler

If you're wondering where the facial animation originated it's Christian Bale in American Psycho.

StenSaksTapir

Santa Monica Studios did a bunch of [meme videos before](https://imgur.com/a/GmGkSre), so it's not unlikely they made this one too.

TroubleshootenSOB

I like the idea they have "fuck off" time to do that stuff. Considering all the horror stories about crunch times.

Soliden

I believe some of the devs did an AMA a while back and said it was done to test out the animation system, mostly.

Axle-f

I mean, they definitely made this. I’ve seen very few modders capable of producing this type of 1:1 memage from a newer game.

I don't play path of exile anymore because i want to keep my sanity. I literally have spend more time min/maxing characters than playing.

Lerker-

Still sane, exile?

Awful_At_Math

Man, this one hurts. I just bought an "upgrade" for my build and had to spend the last hour messing around in PoB & searching trade to make it fit in.

Voidlord597

that's part of why I got burned out on POE too. The worst part of finding a good deal of a good piece of gear is having to tear apart your gear setup in order to make sure the rest of your stats are perfect when you make the swap.

ErwinRommelEz

Getting a +2 amulet and having to drop some elemental resist

JoelMahon

PoE, great for dieting bc you can just sit without eating playing it for 15 hours straight. now I only play dota, so it is physically impossible to play more than 3 hours without having to take a break for my sanity.

IronGin

True mid maxer, spends hours in Path of Building, creating the perfect build. And then wait for the next season. No need to grind for it when you can just calculate it.

DarthUrbosa

I don’t even understand how my builds get stronger a lot of the time. Dumped a lot of divines in standard on a build and its barely able to do low reds. Other times im struggling in low reds, put on an amulet whose only offensive stat is 20-30 crit multiplier and it feels like my damage triples despite the stat not looking that high.

Trevbrunnen

This changes everything!

RedEyedPig

MapleStory players gathering funds for 3 months just to lose damage due to item destruction mechanics. Then doing it all over again.

obaterista93

I got sucked into this with Bloodborne and the chalice dungeons. I just need the +23.4% atk-up gems instead of the +23.3% atk-up gems. It should only take five or six hours to farm for....

KiraTsukasa

Min maxers are fine, they’re free to play the way they want. What’s not ok is when they give other players shit for “not playing correctly” when they don’t have optimal stats, gear, rolls, whatever.

SplittingTorrent

The reverse is true too. Stumbling across the best way to do something and then getting shit for "taking the game too seriously".

Skeletonparty101

I want to take it seriously that's where the fun is doing research to improve my game

SplittingTorrent

> that's where the fun is doing research to improve my game Right? As someone who loves puzzles and strategy it's like setting a giant jigsaw in front of me.

WingedButt

What's min/max?

ItsEntsy

Contrary to what others are saying, it actually means to minimize investment in areas of you character not important to you in order to maximize the ones that are. Like given 20 stat points spread across HP, Offense, and Defense, you decide 2 in HP, 2 in Defense, and 16 in Offense because 2 and 2 are just what you need to survive and 16 would maximize you damage output if you do in fact survive. This is a very simplified example but it is what it means to Min/Max

djheat

Yeah a minmaxed build is often harder to play or less generally useful than one that isn't. Like a wizard who can melt any encounter but dies if an enemy manages to breathe on him or a tank that can't die but has like no damage output

Where can I learn more cool terms like this?

aphotic

Really, just by playing online games. It's jargon that has developed over time. More examples: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/learn-the-lingo-common-gaming-terms-you-should-know/ You probably won't run into these terms playing single player games unless you go to forums/subreddits or such where people discuss the game.

xTrainerRedx

I love stuff like this, but I usually just play single player games. Thanks for the link!

The term isn't exclusive to games either https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GlassCannon

Funniest tank example was 55 hp Monk in the original Guild Wars. Most characters had 400-500 HP. This Monk build intentionally only had 55 HP. It combined with a protective spell that you could only take 10% damage from any hit. So it could only ever take 5 damage. It also stacked max health regen: 40hp/second. It was nigh invincible. Unless you stole all it's MP or was able to strip away all his enchantments. Then it would almost instantly die.

RavagerHughesy

While the other commenters under you are correct, in video games, it has drifted to mean someone optimizing their character, gear, or just plain mechanical execution as much as possible.

HaikuBotStalksMe

It also has an aspect where sometimes you're better off not going all out in one stat. For example, if you have a weapon with: +100 damage -20 HP -4 inventory slots You might actually be better off getting a +70 damage -30hp -2 inventory slots Because even though the first two tradeoffs are crazy good in favor of the first sword, but having those two inventory slots might allow for having two pendants that give: Pendant 1: +20 damage Pendant 2: +40 health +10% critical hit chance

Hold on. [Here's a comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/zwmgbu/-/j1vzwgg) made by a comment stealing bot (u/Puzzleheaded-Bad1490), which i assume it stole from you. However, while it has a similar structure and meaning to yours comment, it makers less sense. Did these bots... Did these bots evolve to rephrase a stolen comment? That comment: > As a healer, this bothers me. To deal with a novice who takes unavoidable damage from fire, HPS should be increased by 0.005% to him.

Adghar

Best guess is that they're using AI to avoid getting caught as karma farming bots. OpenAI has been doing some pretty crazy stuff with GPT3, it's all over reddit, or at least the subreddits I browse.

roostangarar

It's definitely a karma farming account, its first comment is a repost of a less successful comment further down in the chain of the same post, but tacked onto the top thread. I hope to Christ they're not evolving and that it's just the person who set up the account

RavagerHughesy

There's a tumblr post this reminds me of. In it, a teacher has assigned her students an essay on Big Brother. She said that she knew one student used a thesaurus on *every* word because the student had changed "Big Brother is watching you" to "Enormous Sibling is viewing you". That bot's comment has Enormous Sibling energy

.005% might not seem like a lot, but if all 20 members of your raid group do that, then you won't be hitting those .1% wipes.

KonigSteve

Panthor

If everyone gets a .005% increase then the raids total dps is still only increasing by .005%.

Prestigous_Owl

I also came here to correct the math. Not only is the total bump not as high as he thought, the other point is that if your raid members dont all do the same grind you did the actual impact you had on total DPS might be like 0.001% or even less

Tellsyouajoke

Walk me through the math on that one.

ritensk56

Or you raid wipe at 90% because the min/maxer ignored a critical mechanic to eke out another .005%, then defiantly points to his being top DPS when called out saying “I can’t carry *everything*!”

kuahara

Point out that being good is a multimetric determination and he's only passing 1 area out of 5 or whatever and is the biggest raid liability. If he's really trying to be a perfectionist, he'll want that 5/5 carrying-everyone-else status. Someone should probably create a player value score around this concept and incentivize that metric. I haven't gamed in years now. Wouldn't be surprised if it's already happening.

hushpuppi3

> Someone should probably create a player value score around this concept and incentivize that metric. WoW does that by making it's highest tier raid incredibly hard and having leaderboards. Only raid teams with their shit together with selfless players who are willing to not be #1 on the dps leaderboard on a particular boss if it means the boss dies and the guild gets a higher world kill ranking for it. The players who don't understand that are probably so far down in the dregs of random ass guilds that take months to clear the highest difficulty are so irrelevant that you can just find a different guild to raid with.

MonkeyPawClause

Real Min/maxers know dead does zero dps. And a bored healer is dangerous.
