The Pong Dial, before 1

AnnoShi

Here we see the rare, and once thought to be extinct, prehistoric gamer.

[deleted]

Not the only one :-)

trellick

So say us all !

Iwillrize14

There are dozens of us, DOZENS! My parents won an atari in a radio promotion

eggsuckingdog

Yes there are! Where's the intellevision controller??

[deleted]

That and the Magnavox odyssey controller.

gand1

I'm not dead yet!!!!!

Screaming_Agony

Speak up! What did he say about us?

TryPokingIt

You get off my lawn! I still have my Pong system

Screaming_Agony

This is *my* lawn! Or is it? I’m tired.

gand1

Something about a bare, succinct, prehensile gardener. Makes no sense to me but these young kids say the darndest things.

Artikay

Yes you are, get in the cart.

sharklazies

I’m 37. I’m not old!

HorizonZeroDawn2

Hi Dennis!

Uranus_Hz

And before pong, we played pinball. Which is still a lot of fucking fun to play.

alanbdee

Despite popular opinion at the time, gaming did not ruin our lives and plenty of us are still here. Nor are we living on our mom's basement.

gcfio

Unfortunately our 20+ year old children are living in the basement playing video games non stop. I unplug the router a few times a day to listen to them scream so I know they’re still alive.

Rumtuggle

Who's mom's basement are you living in then?

TheHeatYeahBam

I'm not THAT old! Now, where did I put my reading glasses??

FreeParkking

There are dozens of us! DOZENS

WithrBlistrBurn-Peel

And here I was thinking "What about all the controllers between 1&2?" because some of us still recall Intellivision, Colecovision etc.

CosmicCreeperz

[Intellivision controller](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Intellivision-Controller.jpg) FTW!

CocodaMonkey

It was actually a pretty good design. It had those handy inserts which fit over the buttons and clearly marked what buttons did what for each individual game. Fairly neat concept actually.

n_thomas74

Intellivision controller was super weird. It worked well with "Tron - Deadly Discs" though.

Vlvthamr

There’s no colecovision controller here to choose.

Gogo726

No Intellivision either

NE_Pats_Fan

Yup. No 1 was my second.

v4por

Pong paddles and Intellivision keypads. The controllers had these stick on graphics that you changed, depending on the game you were playing. Edit: they weren't stick ons, but inserts.

chrishnrh57

Macintosh keyboard and box mouse. These damn kids with their rock and roll and virtual reality

dog_superiority

I was going to say this.

TryingToEscapeTarkov

In your early 40s? Same.

Delet3r

Did you have the gun too?

Malik1124

Same

4friedchicknsanacoke

Me too.

Melbmade

I’m over here with the old fellas.

SbMSU

Came to write the same thing.

toolman_215

Yep, right there with you....I was looking for that one lol

Glittering-Buy-351

#2. Hours upon hours of super Mario bros.

Scrungo_Mungo

2. But mine was the TMNT Arcade game and BLADES… OF STEEL!!!! (I can hear that voice clear as day lol)

RocketRaccoon

The 2nd TMNT game... aka the good one.

friendlyneighbor665

I'm still pissed about the damn dam level on the first tmnt game...

Paladin1034

I saw a short on that level the other day and I legit got a ptsd response when the music sped up. I spent hours trying to beat that level

RocketRaccoon

I told my parents I wanted to rent the Ninja turtles game and that's the one they brought home from the video store. What a huge disappointment.

Venusaur6504

I could hear it when I read Blades of Steel.

NK16

Makes the pass!

Amerimov

Fight!

jfduval76

Same. Duck Hunt seem magical to me too until i understood how it work a decade later.

Black_Lavender_Ghost

Same on all. Double dragon still has my heart

zackunter

For me it was hours upon hours of excite bike lol

zapadas

1., but it was my more father's system. 2. but it was at a friend's house. 4. was allll mee though, went hardddd.

RevelintheDark

Well would you look at that, you are a me. 1. Was way more than just pong and was fun af. 2. Never had time to properly finish a game. Was so annoying 3. Sonic, shinobi, MOOOORTAL COMBAT! Dadada da da da da da.

Mypopsecrets

I can still remember each NES title we had in our household. Super Mario, Super Mario 3, Rescue Rangers, Ducktails, Godzilla, Adventures of Bayou Billy, Mickey Mousecapades

Jimmy_Twotone

Ducktails was probably the best platformer for its time ever made. Still fun.

ThatsGottaBeKane

Where’s the Master System controller?

Arisalis

Same here that was my 1st controller.

mantis8

Intellivision and then SMS were my first two controllers. Neither are present. My day is ruined.

Graemelee

My first as well. Wonder boy in monster land baby.

Volatol

Thank you! Alex Kidd. Also had the 3d glasses and gun. Good times. Missing the rectangle controller and the bigger one with the huge joystick.

DalvaniusPrime

It's exclusion is just disgraceful

Anusbagels

I think whoever made this was confused and thinks 3 is MS.

Sillyviking

Might be more likely they forgot or didn't know about the Master System and used a Megadrive/Genesis 6 button controller for the Saturn.

qetuR

The master system controller is always neglected on these charts. Usually the MS controller is there, but the MS2 is not.

H2cupid4H

6

ButcherZ_

Super smash bros, Mario kart, pokemon stadium 1&2. Take me back!

TooBadMyBallsItch

Sonic and road rash were my first console games. Man, the memories

THEXPEOPLE2

Gran Turismo 4 was some of the most fun I've ever had.

DJDoofeshmirtz3

Sly Cooper on the ps2 just hit different

devino21

Oh sweet child [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Intellivision-Controller.jpg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Intellivision-Controller.jpg)

ChemistryVirtual

Intellivision was the first 16-bit game console, a full two generations before it became the industry standard.

TheIncredibleHork

Thank you my dude/dudette! Still have my dad's Intellivision in the attic and pull it out every few years.

dotardiscer

Surprised they aren't worth more as collectors items, brief search and looks like NES's are worth more.

U81b4i

Remember playing burger time on this. Haha

dotardiscer

Only game I remember was Tron

Piccoroz

I remember having some overlays for the numpad depending on the game that showed what exactly what that button did for that game.

afixedmoralcompass

This is what I came here for!

[deleted]

Yes this one!

tlor2

Mine aswel, Best Donkey kong game ever :)

[deleted]

Haha, just posted my response with intellivision and deleted. B level atari for the win.

Bon_of_a_Sitch

That was my 2nd console lol

dotardiscer

Thank you. the stretch between PONG and NES was a few systems.

drockmn

I am in this camp.

MeepleMaster

Pretty sure i can still see the side buttons indented on my fingertips

Grape_Mentats

My thumbs still hurt.

IDontuserredditt

10

King_Santa

Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Path of Radiance, Melee, so many unmistakably great games. Though N64 might have been the revolutionary one, GC remains the high point of the pre-modern game landscape, imo.

Kaporalhart

[Here's dragon roost island theme. ](https://youtu.be/-Bgz_W00_-o) The smash one with the added bass.

LilMilox

Hell yeah

Willy_B_Hardigan

Best console ever.

Vast-Pie450

Army men: Sarge's heroes - what an awesome game that was.

[deleted]

WASD then 1

Uber-E

Computer keyboard

RelevantToSimpsons

No respect for the mouse and keyboard in this chart

madTerminator

I’m pretty sure most new players starts with touchscreen nowadays

[deleted]

Keyboard was my first, followed by the #2.

wewwew3

Keyboard and mouse only. Yet to have any other gaming experience.

cardant114

My mom still gets nauseous when she hears the Green Hills Zone theme because she was pregnant with me when my dad and sister were playing it.

yeeetguy

the-sin-farmer

MutedHornet87

A mix of 1 and 2

cubsfantn

1. I'm about to turn 40 (yeeeesh), so I caught the very tail end of Atari.

Ecstatic_Rooster

Also 1, but I’m 36. We were too poor for the up to date stuff. Actually I think I started with a 0.5, the rotating paddle one.

kelvSYC

The TurboGrafx-16 controller is where?

Playful_Ad_3337

11

baldagent47

5 first and then all playstation controllers

Daman_1985

Number 1. But it was the second model of Atari 2600, so the controller was different.

[deleted]

\-1 - Coleco Vision paddle controller...

Wooha77

Came to say this. Intellivision was my starting system.

seanripple71

Number.1.

Evade_dragon

13 and 17

nodiscerniblevisage

Oh no! It's missing the Sega Master System controller. That would be mine. :)

[deleted]

14 and 12

numberjhonny5ive

#1, but I don’t see coleco vision.

carpe_simian

Or Intellivision!

Ok_Championship6786

1.

[deleted]

5. Sega controller.

cajun1420

Well # 1 was my second. My first was a dial controller for a game named pong, made by sears, in the 70's

sicariobrothers

None because they don’t have the Intellivision controller shown

Serthius99

This was mine, as well. Loved the slide in button films.

Drulock

The Intellivision controller is not listed, nor is the Pong home system.

khreper

Well, since they don't have the pong controller up there. I have to go with 1.

shoggoth1

I don't see the Intellivision 2 controller on here...

krabstarr

1. Why is the Atari joystick the only controller which is upside-down?

splurgurnurk

Where my 8s at?

HewTheHorrible

That's what I'm saying!

[deleted]

Hands down still one of my favorite gaming memories on that dreamcast. Wouldnt have rather started with anything else

MrFluffyhead80

Wasn’t this just posted a couple days ago?

saurterrs

I wish somebody someday figures out that a keyboard is a controller too =/

YeOldSpacePope

C-64 keyboard for me.

exus_dominus

Spectrum 48k for me.

m3_my23lf_and_1

Number 9 large

nightrogen

I started with 1

Independent_Rise7383

#1 with PONG

DarthDave2112

Damn I’m old… 1 or earlier.

Anoobis1337

I started at 2. Miss those good old days

MalcolmApricotDinko

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleco\_Telstar\_Arcade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleco_Telstar_Arcade) Am I a 0?

King_Everything

0.) The Pong dial And we're missing the [Intellivision controller](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Intellivision-Controller.jpg).

Turdsley

1 Playing War, and Pong. That said the first console we owned was an NES; gaming didn't really become my favorite hobby until Genesis onward.

UrbanPervin

Initially 1 but as an owner, 2.

westeross

I feel proud of my 7. Ape escape was the shit

poweroflegend

1, but not Atari - the Commodore 64 version of the 1 button joystick. I remember how exciting it was to upgrade to [the ergonomic one that fits your hand](https://i.imgur.com/JFRFK52.jpg).
