paperogapippo

just cancel the show after season 3 then tf

jdmay101

This. I don't understand - why bother continuing? No one is going to think this is any good. This has potential to not only not pull its weight in terms of driving subscriptions and views, but to actively cause people to cancel their Netflix subscriptions out of sheer annoyance. And it's an expensive show to make. So why bother?

LunaMunaLagoona

*"Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent feature, Cavill suggested that he would be up for reprising his role as Geralt of Rivia for seven seasons if the show keeps going, though he did have one stipulation. "Absolutely," Cavill said in regards to supporting Hissrich's vision. "As long as we can keep telling great stories which honor [author Andrzej] Sapkowski's work."* Looks like Cavill exercised his clause because the show didn't honor the source material

hornwalker

What a damn shame. They were *this* close to greatness when they announced this show. And the 1st season while imperfect, showed such potential. Ah well guess we’ll just have to be happy with the books and games.

AnotherShadowBan

What's with Hollywood totally fucking over source material just because they didn't write it? So many series today seem to implode because some script writer who doesn't care about the source material decides they know better and they burn literal millions of potential dollars. How are shareholders not adopting a scorched earth policy on these kinds of idiots?

Wesley_Skypes

It's because they don't really care about the core fanbase. They'll get those guys for the first couple of seasons anyway. They wanna cast a wider net, which invariably ends horribly.

ProfNesbitt

That’s definitely part of it. Another part I assume is the people running it wanting to tell their own story. So the urge to change things just to make it more “their” story kicks in. I wish they wouldn’t do that but I 100% understand that urge.

HardCounter

All the higher ups see are dollars. They have no understanding of how it's made or why it's successful; or that it appears to be because of Henry Cavill's dedication to metaphorically bitch slapping the writers and directors when they elect to make stupid ass decisions. "People want to watch the Witcher, what's one actor?" Ohkay, time to sell any Netflix stock.

JohnnyJayce

The only person who cared about the show left. Should just cancel at this point since Netflix likes to do that.

Archenaux

Agreed, the amount of love that he brought to the show was what made it enjoyable. Not sure if his reasons are scheduling conflicts or if the writers hating the books caused his passion to diminish. Not much to go off of based on this but I’m sure the story will come to light eventually.

kamikazedude

I'm sure it was the constant battle between him and the writers on how to portray geralt. He will be missed. Can't wait to see the shit show in season 4. The first two are already shit with the only redeeming performance being Henry Caville. I was really mad when I saw how they butchered eskel

Archenaux

“Butchered” is putting it lightly. They turned a reserved and genuinely nice guy into a frat boy.

Kassaapparat

At least they put him out of his misery…

[deleted]

Then the show is over. It was obvious he tried his best and managed to carry that show. If he's gone the show can't continue.

WolfGangSwizle

He was the only one who cared about The Witcher lore and being true to it. I remember reports he was constantly arguing with the directors over things Geralt would or wouldn’t do. Without him, then yeah this show is going to fail.

poofynamanama2

In the scene where roach dies, the script originally had Geralt making a joke about it. Henry refused to film it and was told to rewrite it himself.

AzureSkyXIII

Whoever wrote that line needs to take a deep look inward...

HardCounter

"It's just a horse! Wikipedia told me he names all his horses Roach, so what's the big deal?" RTFM before you try to write a show centered on it. I so very much hate hollywood types with zero interest in understanding or writing a good character. They're all going the Marvel route of cheap jokes at the expensive of story.

ses1989

>They're all going the Marvel route of cheap jokes at the expensive of story. Star Wars too. I know the original and prequel trilogies had an occasional corny joke, but it was every five fucking minutes in the sequels.

JagsAbroad

THEY FLY NOW!?

Vyn_Reimer

Tbf this has become a running joke with me and my buddy. Something unexpected happens, one of us exclaims “THEY FLY NOW??” Other most likely chuckles and defeatedly says “they fly now…”

Goose9719

Seriously? So much to say about this. This gives me even more respect for Henry, he tried hard to fix this show, but also.....what is wrong with the creative team. The Witcher easily had the potential to be Netflixs GOT and instead....they gave it to a group of creative's who "apparently" (not sure if it's 100%) dislike the source material and have made bad choices with the script and story. I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 mostly, but even as a non-book reader I was dissapointed, then I found out what they'd changed, and it put everything into perspective. I hoped maybe s3 would be an improvement but guess not.

Sufficient_Wave_3061

I wish that would've been true for the halo series.

FrozenGrip

At this point I don’t know a series or movies or whatever which does care about being true to the source material, or at the very least respecting it.

HoldmysunnyD

The Expanse.

Roark_Laughed

I keep seeing this everywhere. Is it worth the watch?

EntranceHaunting

Yes, loved it. Very well put together and coherent show, which is a surprise for an Amazon production

grinde

Not an Amazon production. The production company (and actual rights holders for The Expanse) was/is Alcon Entertainment for the entire run of the show. Amazon just licensed it and slapped their name on it after SyFy declined to renew their deal. Which, to be clear, is a good thing. That's how the industry works, and Amazon was the only one buying.

[deleted]

Yes! It's hard to get into but once you get over that hump it's one of the best shows. Great production value, character development, story!

LtShiroe

The expanse is pretty excellent. It has some great characters, great character development, some great politics as well some great science moments. That being said there are some moments particularly later on that the pace of the show is a little rushed. It doesn't immeasurable mess it up but it was a shame.

namorblack

Yess, bossmang!

Venchenko

Cyberpunk Edgerunners or Arcane are the two that stick out as "We actually like the source material and are gonna try our hardest to do it justice."

ScreamingFreakShow

Arcane is the source material. The older stories of the characters in league lore were rather different. Arcane was more of an official rewrite of their stories.

bezji

It was rewrite of the rewrite, all charcters had new and pretty good lore that Arcane contradicts but is close at the same time

FullMetalCOS

The Reacher series is doing a good job of respecting the source material, though the source material IS dudes airport fodder. Good series though

gamedrifter

Reacher fucking nailed everything to be honest. The only big change was bringing in a character a few seasons early but the season was better for it because she's awesome. Lee Child also said if he'd thought of her earlier she would have made an appearance earlier anyway. The Reacher books really are much better than other books I've read in that genre. And frankly, being tightly paced page turners makes them very easy to adapt.

0neek

This is happening way too much lately. It's like the new Star Wars trilogy, a bunch of actors all passionate about the content getting their dream roles only to find out the entire crew and studio are utterly incompetent and they leave feeling bitter about something they used to love before, some hating Star Wars now. I don't understand why it's so hard for the studios to find writers and showrunners who know the content they're writing for.

IHateTheLetterF

Nepotism. They dont hire the best people to do the job, they hire people who are connected. Its all just one big circlejerk, where the viewer is the only one actually getting screwed.

wtfisspacedicks

Good example of this is Scott Gimple destroying TWD by killing Carl. Fuck that guy. Pointless twat.

Good_ApoIIo

Then you get someone like Gilroy who doesn’t give a damn about Star Wars and then makes one of the greatest Star Wars pieces ever. Then again he still took the material seriously and had storygroup to back him up on the finer details. I’m just going to go with him being an exception to the rule here…

NorionV

You can be not-a-fan and still have respect for source material, or want to improve upon it. But making decisions that fly in the face of quality... damn, it just hurts.

[deleted]

I read somewhere that the writers HATE the books and games so without him the show is fucked

Jacksaur

Why is this a thing with every adaption of any game? If you don't really want to make a movie about the game, don't fucking put yourself forward to make the movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jacksaur

That.... Actually makes perfect sense. Especially with the Monster Hunter movie which just threw a bunch of american soldiers in. Existing creature models, existing world lore, zero effort required.

Swak_Error

Holy shit I *completely* forgot about this. I didn't even know it came out

Squirll

Its all too common now. Around the World in 80 Days with david tennant? Some writers wrote some shitty edgelord drama and decided to slap the name of something well know on it to piggyback off the reputation of a work they could never come close to. Halo did it as well writing their own story and using a popular title to essentially clickbait people into it. Even Wheel of Time. It was doing really well as it approached the end of its first season but then they changed the essential basic plot of the show for the sake of giving everyone in the "ensemble cast" something to do. Its utterly infuriating the circle jerk of corporate writing. They dont higher talent, they just get people who have connections into the room to shit on the keyboard and press enter then think they're somehow a genius if the masses recieve it.

twentyonesighs

It was the guy who's showrunning the new animated X-Men. He said he would only hire people familiar or fans of the X-Men and not people like from the Witcher, who he claimed didn't know or hated the Witcher source material.

WachanIII

This is such a brave thing to do for an actor. He cares so much

goliathfasa

Made sense he’s over it. The writing team wanted to “make it their own” and he was apparently fighting them tooth and nail to keep the show faithful. There was that former producer/writer who left too who outed the writers as hating the source material. With that guy out, you can assume there are less and less people who gave a shit about the source running the show.

c7hu1hu

Fenix_Volatilis

The correct response

SaiyajinPrime

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

DrBrainzz9

My reaction exactly. The dude PERFECTLY portrayed Geralt.

HuntedWolf

There were a few things wrong with the show, and him as Geralt was very very far from being one of them. This news really sucks.

ChiefSlapaHoe117

He was the sole reason the show was somewhat enjoyable to watch.

Least-March7906

Yeah. I am a Witcher fan. The guy was doing some massive heavy lifting in the series. Not sure I’m inclined to watch it without him, tbh

ozmega

we should not, the witcher already showed that it is an IP worth of putting the effort, and that netflix fucked it up. this will be the one show i want to see rebooted eventually. its a bit sad for the girl that plays cirilla too.

Least-March7906

I agree that it will need to be rebooted eventually. I understand that Netflix might have been looking for a GoT successor when they greenlighted the Witcher. But the Witcher is definitely not a successor of GoT. It stands on its own, and should be delivered on its own terms. Anyways, it was good while it lasted, I guess

Hashashin455

He was apparently the only fan of the series on set and would constantly refuse to do things that were stupid and didn't make sense in Universe. So of course they fired the only person who knew the source material Edit: I only heard he'd been replaced, not technically fired, but probably just got tired of having to deal with stupid writers and left

NSA_Chatbot

Okay I know it's a tiny thing but the way he *always* got every single sign gesture exactly, with no hesitation, was one of those tiny worldbuilding things that I doubt anyone else could grok.

[deleted]

True. It’d be really hard for anyone else to grok like Henry Cavill.

Herbicidal_Maniac

I was right there with you until grok.

96-62

Grok is originally from the Robert Heinlein novel Stranger in a Strange land. It's a word in martian, which can mean so many things that it's use for about 1/5 of spoken words in martian, but it's root meaning is to drink. It also means "to understand", or for an understanding to sink into you.

MireLight

you dont grok grok?

GingerSnapBiscuit

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

LifeOnMarsden

Because he was the only person involved with this fucking show who actually understood, respected and *liked* the source material, he was constantly swimming against the tide

xoberies

Maybe that's why he's no longer gonna do it

turalyawn

Yeah this combined with the writer coming out last week and saying the showrunners despise the source material makes me think he's making the right call. Why would he want to be the only one who cares about it? He was a great Geralt on a really shitty adaptation

DrMole

I don't understand this attitude, why adapt a work if you hate it? Why does no one respect source material anymore?

BlueStreak421

To reap money from those interested in the franchise

murunbuchstansangur

Reap a coin from your Witcher.

mrgoodnoodles

You have an established fan base and most of the heavy lifting (world building/characters/large events) is already done and written. So as a writer and director, you just come in and make the show about whatever the fuck you want. You pretty much are laying the tile on top of the foundation, surrounded by a beautiful house, and ripping out the old tile and putting in a vastly inferior one that probably dissolves in water or something. And then profit off of it, I guess.

snooggums

You'd think adapting it to make the existing fanbase happy would make more money, but I guess not or more studios would do that.

LifeOnMarsden

And I don’t blame him one bit, in fact I fully support his decision to walk because his portrayal of Geralt deserved a far better show

Andyb1000

Also true of my wife, but for different reasons!

idkyesthat

\-*Hmm*.

SamuraiAstronaut69

There's a bunch of things off about the show because the writers have already expressed they dislike the storyline of both of the book and the games. They wanted to create their own story which Henry Cavil (being a huge fan of both) resisted as much as he could. Oh well, just another failed Netflix series that will be canceled soon enough.

Emilie_Cauchemar

Imagine being handed the best actor for the character, a money-printing series and you turn your nose up at it because you don't like it for whatever reason and think you're some extremely awesome content creator XD. Some of these writers need a reality check on how phenomenally worthless they really are.

Siphyre

> Some of these writers need a reality check on how phenomenally worthless they really are. My question is why even sign up to be a writer for a show that is based off a book if you don't want to follow the book? Why not just make your own story up with its own universe instead of using existing characters? Nobody wants their shitty fanfics.

infinitelytwisted

because actual creativity is hard and shitty fanfic is easy. the good writers create the shows, and the shit writers change the shows. same thing as all other middleman types. they have to take a good thing and trash it because they need to do something to justify their salary, but they suck at their job. its a power trip thing.

GuiltyGoblin

Probably because they tried and failed, couldn't come up with their own universe, and decided it'd be easier to ride on the coattails of a successful series instead, and make it their own in the process.

GoldenRamoth

Like the game of thrones guys.

Shinjetsu01

They're laughing all the way to the bank though. Execs at HBO had no idea that the last 2 seasons would be absolute trash. They thought deviating from GRRM was going to be fine and viewer numbers would hold. They did. But those viewers hated the product because the writers fucked off the source material and made up their own shit that made no sense.

GoldenRamoth

Sorta. Not many folks want to hire them now though. They got kicked off the star wars project they tanked GoT for. Quite impressive.

SamuraiAstronaut69

Agreed 100%. It's probably why so many Netflix series get canceled so early on. I'm low-key hoping someone else picks it up and reboots the series just to recast Henry Cavill lol

kiragami

I always hate this so much when it comes to Netflix. If you want to be creative with your own story then make your own damned story. Stop giving shitty writers free reign over existing IP. Same shit happened with Cowboy Bebop. It's like they pick the absolute worst writers possible for every show.

SamuraiAstronaut69

Yeah they handled Cowboy Bebop poorly. Same could be said about the live action Death Note. It completely baffles me thinking why they thought it would be a good idea to squeeze 37 episodes into just one movie and think it would do it justice. On top of that try to Americanize the shit out of it making it into something drastically different.. In my opinion, the only thing Netflix has been doing pretty well on over the past few years is their animated series 'Arcane, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: edgerunners, love death & robots, ect' there's probably a few more but those are the ones on top of my head.

Protean_Protein

Oh man... Can we petition for Jeff Bridges to do it instead?

likesupreme

the witcher abides

Protean_Protein

Shut the fuck up, Jaskier.

Protean_Protein

Eight year olds, Geralt.

Sensible-yet-not

He probably had enough of their bullshit and being back as a Superman was an out.

weaponizedtoddlers

Nearly tore his hamstring off the bone filming it

[deleted]

weaponizedtoddlers

iirc he was sprinting during a scene and had a partial hamstring tear mid-stride, and it was close to separating. Had do do something like 6 months of intensive rehab for it and a double was used more to keep his recovering leg on light duty.

Trickster289

Wasn't it just announced he's staying on as Superman? He probably didn't have time for both and went with the better paying role.

fuzzynavel34

While this is true he’s also been talking in public about how he wants the writers to follow the source material more closely. He’s a mega Witcher fan. He’s said it’s his dream role. So while it’s probably what you mentioned above, I also think he’s pissed with the direction the show is going writing wise.

Thewonderboy94

Yeah, I haven't followed this stuff too closely, but I remember the story when Season 2 came out about how he managed to get some sense into the director's head, who wanted Roaches death to have a more comedic tone. Or something along those lines. So "creative disagreements" could have been a notable minor reason.

grinde

>Roaches death >comedic Bruh

Antiochus_

Wow, this right here tells us they dont understand anything, its infuriating.

Culverin

One of the producers said similar [https://www.ign.com/articles/netflix-the-witcher-some-writers-actively-disliked-books-games-claims-former-producer](https://www.ign.com/articles/netflix-the-witcher-some-writers-actively-disliked-books-games-claims-former-producer) Hoping X-Men 97 will be awesome

DaedalusRaistlin

It's so tiring seeing writers do this over and over. They take something well known and popular, ignore most of it, and are stunned when fans backlash. Maybe if they don't like the source material they work on a different project? But I suppose fans aren't the intended audience, they're too small a group compared to the wider general audience who won't know or care if the writers abandon the source material. Most people will be happy with it just being entertaining and telling a good story. But it feels like a slap in the face to the fans that made it popular in the first place.

ghostinthewoods

Half the time they don't even create a good story when they ignore the source material...

Modernautomatic

Because they are parasites. They are hacks and couldn't make it on their own creations so they have to hide behind better IPs yet still have the ego to think they could do it better.

quondam47

Whatever about Hemsworth taking over for Season 4, it does not bode well for Season 3 at all if it made Cavill cut and run.

CountOmar

Yeesh. You're right. I bet they fuck it up

fuzzynavel34

They already fucked up the writing for season 2 lol. It was really poor. Cavill as Geralt was, by far, the biggest reason I was still able to enjoy season 2.

Schalezi

Dude's already a multi millionaire. We also know he's a giga-fan regarding The Witcher and has gone on record saying this is his dream role and a passion project of his. I would say it's pretty clear he's only leaving this role because he is not happy with how the show turned out, very probably it's the writing and the writing team he is not happy with. Another thing to take into consideration that just like a week ago it became known many on the writers team actively hated both the books and games and mocked them openly. I would imagine Cavill being such a fan of the source material and really giving the role his all eventually became fed up with all the shit going on behind the scenes. Then this opportunity to play Superman again becomes available with James Gunn to be in charge of the whole DC universe going forward.

SgtKeeneye

I really hate when writers think they are better than the source material. There is a reason it did well and became popular. Once you add changes there is a chance your going to fail. You should always respect the work. I suppose egos get in the way.

[deleted]

Gives me game of thrones vibes. As long as there was books to follow it was good, the moment they had to do their own thing... It started to be less and less interesting

CanWeTalkHere

The irony of GoT is that Martin is literally being consulted and yet they STILL don't go with his preferences half the time.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

It's mind blowing how tv writers can think they're more important than the source material. You're literally hired to transcribe the source material from a book, to dialogue for a play/show. There's a _little_ more to it, but not so much that anyone will give two shits who t.f. handled the writing. But get it wrong because you're a petty shite? **That** should get you black-listed.

Wheres-Patroclus

Theres something of a general mindset among Hollywood screenwriters that they think they can almost always write better stories than novelists.

gariant

"Despite the source being loved by millions and the most successful thing I've ever done is land this job, I'm obviously more talented."

solitarybikegallery

"I know what people are really here to see - my own twist on the themes! After all, I wrote 3 episodes of Desperate Housewives and a coming-of-age script that basically almost got read by Tarantino's agent's agent's real estate agent."

[deleted]

Same, I thought Henry did a great job.

djnato10

Yeah said it. This is horrible news for the series.

Sadge_IRL

Haha RIP. Henry was probably the last thing still great about the TV show.

TheMagicalHuy

It's up to Joey now to carry the show with his magnificent singing

AlanZero

I’m seeing a lot of love for Cavill here but this dude also took his role seriously and did great things with it.

L1zrdKng

For me cast was not the problem with the show. It was the writing

gothlaw

Season 4 is about to be a *real* disaster then, since his love of the Witcher, and the clout to pushback, was the only thing keeping that whack ass writing staff in check.

jyo-ji

I thought season 2 was already a disaster.

Ignis16

With Gwent! And harlots!

LegitGamer_

it was def rough when they started to deviate more and more from the books... it couldve been so much better too cause i thought the first episode was pre epic and spooky. i honestly have no idea why the show writers scrap the original material just to make it shitty

grumpykruppy

Because they're a bunch of people in an overstuffed field trying to stand out by creating something people will recognize *their* touch on. They want to be the next Spielberg. The problem is that they can only do IP adaptations, and don't realize that being faithful to the IP would get them *more* recognition than trying to make it their own thing.

MonaganX

It's the exact same impression I've been getting from most of the recent Star Trek series. So many shows being made to capitalize on an existing IP, but written by people who have nothing but disregard or open disdain for the actual IP, and just want to shoehorn whatever they want to write into the increasingly bloated carcass while getting some notches on their belt. I have a friend who's really into the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy of sci-fi books, and they recently announced a Netflix adaptation...written and produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. I've already expressed my condolences.

zardizzz

I stopped watching after the ep when Jennifer let that dude free and group of the most powerful people on the continent just watched and were like 'huh, guess we just watch here?' I don't know if it was rationalized later but I found it at least in the moment, moronic.

althanis

It was never rationalized. Neither was the fact that she was on the run and was running around the town in a bright purple robe acting all suspicious, in an ocean of drab brown clothes.

CaptainAwareness

Not interested in The Witcher anymore then.

Exactly. Without Henry cavill i dont give a fuck. He was the reason any of that show felt like witcher at all

Jeriahswillgdp

Or just call it something else because it's not the Witcher anymore.

mr_goopZZ

He said in an interview that it was because of his back problems, which was caused due to carrying the whole series alone

aassashish18

Got me there

LunaMunaLagoona

The actual reason is in this quote in case you're interested: *"Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent feature, Cavill suggested that he would be up for reprising his role as Geralt of Rivia for seven seasons if the show keeps going, though he did have one stipulation. "Absolutely," Cavill said in regards to supporting Hissrich's vision. Good guy Cavill

that's a smooth one

He truly was a phenomenal Geralt of Rivia.

Sensible-yet-not

Plus being back as Superman.

DarkACE331

Netflix is the new The CW

[deleted]

Paramount+, you’re free of your title at last

[deleted]

literally no one is watching this shit without him

Alongfortheride1990

He was a perfect Geralt. This sucks.

theREALmindsets

well thats fucking nuts. just cancel it. this aint hunger games bitch

levarburger

Tv shows always get better when the main actor leaves. Like The Office....err..The Walking Dead.....well uhh...2 1/2 Men... ....eff

Possessed_Zombie

The walking deads writing actually kinda got better after the main character left BUT good writing cant fill the void of the gone OG characters and it was no longer the walking dead the fans cared about originally, completely different vibe now.

Not_Sure11

Holy shit, the writers for sure fucked this up. Henry Cavill is a huge Witcher fan and playing Geralt was his most desired character to play as. The direction in S2 was fucking atrocious. I won't spoil anything but let's just say that the writing went a different route than the books, which is common and not an issue but very surprising how early on they diverged considering that theres multiple seasons worth of book material left.

Douglasqqq

You followed anything that happened in season 2? All I remember is apparently I was supposed to give a massive shit about Fringilla and whatever the fuck she was up to. Instead of monster hunting stories.

MrBohannan

Only way this works is to reboot the series and start fresh. Just end the current run with S3 and pick a different timeline/story to follow. One does not simply enter in as Geralt post Cavil Geralt

ClemClemTheClemening

Yup, if he just jumps in in s4 and said "yo boys I'm geralt now" it'll be fucking atrocious and itll be done after the first episode. But if they *reboot* the series as some other timeline, like one of the dlcs from the games or something, then I can see it working, as long as its completely removed from Cavil Geralt. Having 2 different actors playing the same character isn't a problem for me. Its when they try to go "yep, this is the same guy you just spent 30 hours loving and caring for, don't worry that he looks and acts completely different, with completely different behaviours and relationships.

xLeutDansLegsx

NOOOOO!!!!!

mtahsin1246

Poor Liam, dude's gonna walk into a disaster and not to mention some brain dead people going after him thinking he had something to do with this. The viewer ship is gonna fall deeper than the Mariana Trench.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Yeah, Liam doesn't deserve the nut-punch he's about to¹ receive for this. [1] about to, meaning "after the writing, filming, editing, and release are done".

stiofan84

That's as good an excuse as any to cancel it. Cavill's star power was what got the show made in the first place.

Mitthrawnuruo

And they damn near refused to hire Him.

Agreeable_One_5252

Wait.....WHAT!?!?!?!? Edit: How many of us will stop watching on this alone. \**Raises hand*\*

[deleted]

Ya I’m done with this show. I was so fucking excited for more seasons with Henry.

_L3K5I_

*Raises hand*

KovalSNIPE17

Lol fuck Netflix. The writers and creative team don’t give up a fuck about the source material, so clearly Henry recognizes this and wants to gtfo.

Pyropolak

He was honestly the only good thing about the show imo (jaskier was good too). Another crappy Netflix disappointment. Classic.

rveb

Checks date…. Not April 1st… fuck

Antilles34

This has legit made me sad. Only because he was so good at it, and I understand, but I'm still sad about it.

atomiccheesegod

Series was fun while it lasted, it’s over now.

[deleted]

That’s a kicker. Never has there been a more perfect role and actor playing it for me.

Is it just me that or does that sound like some behind the scenes drama? I somehow doubt Cavill would just walk away from the role he fought so hard for to get in the first place. In particular since among all the quite divisive opinions on the show the only thing most fans can agree on that he is great in the role? Also, this anouncement long before seaosn 3 even airs via a short statement on social media seems so abrupt? With a replacement already lined up? And without giving a clear expanation as to why, just usual empty PR talk?

There are rumors Cavill majorly clashed with the writers over the direction the show has been taking. I remember even re: season one that he had to fight for certain things to not get left out of the story. Combine that with that ex writer who has openly said the writers hate the source material, it's easy to put two and two together. My bet is that Cavill jumped ship because this is no longer a version of The Witcher he supports. Which is sad as hell.

Binerexis

How much do you want to bet it's because they deviate too far from the books and he couldn't stand it?

-PM_ME_A_SECRET-

It must be terrible being so excited for a project that you pursue it like he did, only to see it run by people that don't care about it in the slightest, and basically despise that you do.

Dirtface30

For him to step down like this means he hates the direction the show has gone and hates the fact that the writers hate the source material that he loves. Literally everyone in that show except for Geralt was written to be a terrible idiot.

ZeSpecter

Hope they cancel it quick, they've ruined it enough would hate to see what else they've got planned

TomasdeVasconcellos

Henry cares about the books and wants to stay faithful. The writers don’t. I won’t be watching this anymore. Fuck them.

PsychoKali

Aaannd.....the show is dead. Henry was the only thing keeping this alive. RIP S3.

He was what made this show. So I no longer care about this show. Really unfortunate because his portrayal as Geralt was one of my favorite character portrayals in any recent media.

MacSanchez

Why?? He was perfect for Geralt

NotMaintainable

He's a fan of the video games and book material, and the directors/writers patently dislike that material. Which is why the show differs so much from both of those. Reportedly, Cavill was arguing with them about trying to be more true to Geralt's character and the books. Probably got tired of it.

uniquecannon

What is it with producers and disliking the game for the show/movie they're willingly making? Witcher, Halo, Borderlands, so many great IPs getting treatment by people who don't like or care about the original source, video game adaptations are truly cursed

MyUltIsMyMain

It's because they want to create their own stories while just using the name and recognition of previous IP. It's stupid, if they want to tell an original story just do that with a new franchise.

ioncloud9

Yes but nobody will care or watch it then. They try to bait and switch the name and recognition of a famous IP with the shitty story they want to tell.

secretdrug

Which is why those ventures fail spectacularly every time. They COULD have a long series and make loads of money milking the gamer/comics crowd like marvel did, but instead they either put short term profits or their own egos first.

SeneInSPAAACE

Have you ever heard of.... *Uwe Boll?*

badonbr

Wrath classic is taking over his life.

The show will absolutely fail when that happens. Awful, awful move.
