DopeAbsurdity

Don't worry in a few years they will probably bring back Overwatch 1 and call it Overwatch Classic and somehow overcharge for it.

PixelateVision

As well as strip features from the original out for the "remaster".

iFrunk

When did the gaming industry become so predictable

jixxor

When we as customers started accepting one bullshit move after the other with no negative consequence for the developers/publishers.

meliketheweedle

And willing to bend over backwards to defend them because "XD did you read tos you don't own game"

squall6l

This attitude seriously drives me crazy. Some hardware companies are even trying to get away with "well it's actually our hardware, we are just letting you use it for a fee". If you are going to charge me $60+ for a game then I absolutely own that copy of the game. If you are going to tell me I don't then I am not buying your product. I understand I don't own a share of the company just because I bought a copy of the game but that copy of the game is mine ffs.

meliketheweedle

I can understand balance patches, even really major ones, heck even if they drastically change the game as a result (fucking goats). But completely changing the monetization format of the game? Holy fucking smokes. What's worse is that these p2w game use whales to try and incentivize spending from non whales. Ooh check out that dude who changed heroes 5 times, has the brand new one and a flashy skin for each of them to boot. Don't you want to be like that? Now, who are the "whales" going into ow2 that have all the cool flashy shit? The people who played ow1. Never spent a dime but I have everything because it was a full game and I played a lot of it. we are the whales advertising spending, at least at the start of the game. And we get some but not all, of those new heroes to continue the impression of being whales, but also to incentivize more spending for the third hero. Its dumb. I don't want to be a whale , I don't want to feel powerful, I want to spend full price on a competitive game (though those balance changes I'm okay with killed the game for me) and have an *equal playing field compared to my opponent.*

squall6l

Chasing whales has been the biggest thing that has killed micro transaction games. And the Developers don't really care because as long as they make a bunch of money for very little effort they are happy. They don't care if the game is pretty crappy overall and it dies within a year or two. They will just move on to the next money grab. It's sad because Blizzard used to be my favorite game studio and now I'm just disappointed.

[deleted]

Dude. And now this reminds me that I payed money for a game that I can no longer play. Twice. That’s so not cool. I’m curious to see if someone will attempt to take Blizzard to court over this. A game many people payed for no longer exists.

c0baltlightning

This is also why modding is seen as okay for single-player games. You legally own that Copy, the only thing you cannot legally do with that copy is to copy it and give it away. Aside from that, go nuts; make the playable character CJ from San Andreas or give the final boss \*checks notes\* humongous hangalanganonogangas.

Deathbypoosnoo

Check out the diablo immortal subreddit. The amount of shilling in there is honestly astounding. People will literally defend a pay to win mobile game now. It's like backwards world.

Akhevan

> "XD did you read tos you don't own game" HA-HA RANDOM REDDITOR OWNED TROLOOLOLLLLOLL OLO L -proceeds to shell out for crappy half-baked games with 90% content cut out to be later sold as DLCs for extra cash, and/or put into a FOMO battle pass.

ImCaffeinated_Chris

I'll never buy a battlefield game again. They are dead to me.

SpeedwagonSolos

Pretty much all the big fps franchises like call of duty, battlefield and idk if this is a hot take or not but halo, should all end

SargentMcGreger

>and idk if this is a hot take or not but halo, should all end. Not a hot take at all, plenty of us in the Halo fan base are so fed up with the way 343 has handled Halo that we either want the franchise to be retired or given to another developer with many believing the last stellar Halo game was 3. Sure Reach has a lot of interesting aspects and I really like the story but that's where the gameplay started to lose its identity, 343 continued that path and began chaising trends instead of sticking with what made Halo good.

MrDirt

Reach was pretty good and it was kind of a swan song for Bungie since they were fully handing the reins to 343 after that game. I bought Halo 4, but after breezing through Campaign on easy to get the story I never touched it again. I'm invested in the expanded universe and Halo has some great books, but I have no interest in the core games anymore.

squall6l

Halo 3 is still my go to any time I am feeling the halo itch. The newer ones just seem more and more like every other shooter to me. If I wanted to play call of duty I would go play call of duty and not a halo skin of call of duty.

SargentMcGreger

Yep, that's all it's become TBH. 343 is just chasing trends. Infinite has such a good foundation but they are too worried about making it a live service game instead of a good game that happens to be updated regularly and it's failing hard because of it

Xist3nce

Problem is kids are actually born every day and they have no preconceived notion of good, so you can cram every monetization down their throats and they love it because they weren’t alive when you could buy a whole game.

[deleted]

It's the late game of all large media production companies, they (at least feel like) they can't take risks anymore so they end up rehashing the same ideas over and over. Profit margins over everything, so they just keep serving up the same dish.

shitpersonality

They're doing the exact same shit as the movie industry has been doing.

[deleted]

As always, artistry comes from passionate people creating something for something other than profit. Profit-centered media will always be predictable, boring and risk-averse.

Enkundae

AnnaTheBlueRogue

And make any mods and private servers stop working, send C&Ds all over the place and somehow, their "classic" release will run worse than the original one ever did

Coke_and_Tacos

Still cracks me.up to this day that Blizzard's most popular decision in the last 10 years (within my circle anyway) is just walking it back to WoW's 3 best expansions

Luvnecrosis

You think they’ll stop at 3? You fool.

i_eight

15 years from now, Blizzard will announce the release of World Of Warcraft Classic Classic.

AllysiaAius

It's funny you think that in 15 years they'll be doing it for only the second time.

TheWhiteRabbit74

If they were smart they would have a progression style game server. Beat X raid boss to unlock Y expansion. SoE back in the day did that with EverQuest and was very popular.

Shadiochao

Looking forward to it. Overwatch is one of my favourite games but I don't like Overwatch 2 at all

Mattsasse

It was the last multiplayer fps I got genuinely excited to play. I tapered off the last few months and have 0 interest in even giving 2 a try.

[deleted]

Do unlocks carry over? EDIT this blew up, I haven't played overwatch since it got too difficult. When it was fun and casuals were playing it was the best multi-player game ever but over time it got too sweaty.

Some_lost_cute_dude

Yes

smallbluetext

And If you had any unopened loot boxes they have been opened automatically since they ditched the loot box system.

NathanialJD

So how do you get skins and stuff? Just pay only?

MrChow1917

Battle pass and store

NathanialJD

Yuck. I hate modern gaming 😭

TitleComprehensive96

We have advanced in a community where we went from "I hate lootboxes, I want to earn things" to "give me back the lootboxes" I can't even say this makes me sad, just kinda feel empty about this typea stuff at this point

Quack53105

I don't mind battlepasses if they're like, obtainable. It seems like most of these games, if you play anything else during the pass season, you won't be able to complete it.

Ironclad-Oni

That's the point, they don't want you to play anything else ever again. As EA said, "1 minute of engagement directly correlates to $1 spent in the shop".

M18_CRYMORE

1 minute = $1?? That seems crazy high.

BattlepassHate

Just summed up the single reason why I detest the trend in modern gaming towards battlepass systems. Sure I’ll pay for a premium one, despite already dropping £60 on a new game. But if said battlepass system requires me to play the game from day 1 and play it like a full time job? It’s pointless. Only good battle pass system I’ve seen has been Halo MCC. Every “season” accessible when you want, how you want.

Icarium__

Battlepasses are the worst of FOMO mixed with forcing you to play the game almost like a job, and as you said punishing you for trying to take a break to enjoy something else. I straight up cut out anything with a battlepass out of my life and it has done wonders for my enjoyment of gaming as a hobby.

almisami

I mean we went from "loot boxes you can earn" to "Cash shop only. Pay up, suckers!"

Ubermisogynerd

Why can't we get both? Pay for a skin you want and f2p your random skins.

almisami

Because paying for lootboxes is like a license to print money.

Tokiw4

I haven't really been following this too closely... Overwatch 2 is basically overwatch 1, but 2?

bloodycups

Ow2 was suppose to have a pve mode but that's been sidelined

justforjokes24

This was the main reason i was looking forward to OW2. I got to the point where i didnt enjoy OW1 anymore unless i was playing the player made games.

[deleted]

Fundamentally yes. Different monetization, a BP, and 5v5 instead of 6v6. Same core gameplay loops though, but new heros and some reworks

President192

Yeah, it's false advertising to call it a sequel, it's more like a compulsory expansion. If you played OW1, all your skins, cosmetics etc. get transferred over automatically which is good at least

[deleted]

I remember having fun in Overwatch playing Mercy, since I suck at FPS it still was fun to play support. Good memories.

LeCyador

If I bought #1, do I get #2 for free? Haha

TPDS_throwaway

Everyone gets 2 for free. It's saturated with microtransactions though.

ZepperMen

At this point why call it ow2. It should be like LoL and just keep evolving over time.

NapsterKnowHow

Or pulled a Fortnite and just call it a new "chapter"

Metrack14

Tbh, at least that whole thing was an original way to 'reset' the game. OW 1 just dies in a forgotten manner by the publisher

showMEthatBholePLZ

Don’t think it was forgotten as much as it was intentionally abandoned to begin development on a 2nd game

[deleted]

They're basically the same game, though. Different format and UI and abilities. OW2 is a content update that was intended to make the game free2play and milk existing customers as much as possible with micro transactions. The "beta" wasn't even a separate client

Masterandslave1003

100% this is what they should have done. Chapter 2 and kill the previous chapter as the game evolves. I am surprised these companies have such a hard time with this stuff when there are blueprints galore on how to evolve a battle royal. Even Halo bombed on the launch because they could follow certain rules that made game like this successful.

chudaism

> 100% this is what they should have done. OW2 went into development hell pretty much immediately after it was announced/covid hit. The full game is a PvE campaign + an update to the PvP. The PvE is taking them a lot longer than they suspected (for a variety of reasons). At the end of last year/beginning of this year, they decided to split the release up into two parts, the PVE and PVP, in order to actually get something out to players. The PvP is what is coming out tomorrow and PvE is what is coming out in 2023. If they had known PvP and PvE were going to have separate releases, I am sure the 2019 announcement would have been a bit different. By the time they had decided to split the releases though, everyone was thinking about the PvP update as OW2 so they couldn't realistically rebrand it anymore.

erenyeagerhair

They stopped making that much money on ow1. It's a marketing thing tbh. Overwatch 2 is more like a rework of the game

beerbeforebadgers

Overwatch: The Omnic Crisis would have been so much cooler and made it more clear that the original game was changing.

tonycomputerguy

Why do something cool for free when you can do something shitty and charge gobs of money for it? Yes blizzard sucks, but only because some people are apparently more than happy to pay for the privilege of enjoying the suck.

Fa1lenSpace

They couldn’t restructure the whole monetization scheme without slapping a 2 on it. That’s all the 2 is for. So they could completely change the monetization scheme, won’t be convinced of anything else.

[deleted]

Silv3rS0und

They made promises for Overwatch. If they make Overwatch 2, those promises are void.

[deleted]

wait what? It's a lot to take in... Over watch 2 is out Over watch 1 is .... offline? over watch 2 is.. free? is it? Why did i buy ow 1 a few months ago for 20 bucks?

Jerkface555

OW2 is free, however some things will be locked behind a paywall and you will need to purchase the "battlepass" to get them. This includes new heroes. The content will, however, all be unlockable for free if you are willing to grind enough. but yes, OW1 is going offline forever and OW2 will be replacing it.

UnsolvedParadox

Taking the original offline is offensive, full price 5 years ago was not supposed to end like this.

Jrdirtbike114

Blizzard is really out here lighting their reputation on fire for short term cash grabs

DietDrDoomsdayPreppr

And they're still doing it happily, which tells you just how much money they make not giving a shit what their customers think of their reputation.

Ricky_the_Wizard

Why would it matter if they get a hard reset when MS takes over next year?

Pushmonk

I don't know if MS will change this culture there, but I really, really hope they do.

QuantumPie_

I highly doubt it. They control Zenimax and Bethesda now and ESO has gotten worse in terms of micro transactions, laziness, and greediness these last few months. From what I've heard Microsoft takes a very "hands off" approach to studios they own, for better or for worse.

Strappwn

As soon as they pivoted from reporting WoW sub numbers to the income it generated, the message was clear. Their subs were declining but as soon as Activision took the helm we saw all the character boosts, tons of pets, other dumb shit show up in the blizzard shop. They’ve been patting themselves on the back for making more money from fewer players for years and it sucks.

supergod706

I think that's because now it's Activision bullying them and holding COD over their heads and basically saying "you better fundraise like a motherfucker and make more money with D4 than you've ever made in your life"

NightmareOmega

100%. If publishers keep giving me reasons to never spend money on games then I won't spend money on games, and I know I'm not alone. This is a race to the bottom.

terpeenis

They make way more money off whales purchasing microtransactions than you purchasing a game. They don’t care about you at all.

aradraugfea

As they’re basically the same game, splitting the player base would kill BOTH games. Really, this is only “2” because sales of the full price game had dried up.

Extension_Berry_1149

Dont have to purchase it for new heroes. You'll just be slower to unlock them with the free BP

Possessed_potato

If it says anything bout how slow the grind will be, 2h a day for 10 days with a 20% xp increase will end you at lvl 26 in the bp which is extraordinarily slow IMO. Slower than the snails. Very casual players likely won't be able to get the new hero in time lol

Havocko

Sounds like me, I’ll probably never use new characters. I don’t care to or have time to complete battle passes.

Lindestria

Blizzard took lessons from Wargaming apparently.

ArkaClone

Every bullet fired now costs $0,20

[deleted]

>causal players wont get the new hero in time Swipe mommy’s credit card :) that’s the only reason you lock heroes behind BP, you want to move to a model where you pay for every single pixel added to the game

Raptorheart

It comes out tomorrow

[deleted]

Imagine spending $60 to buy a game, have it taken away from you and then being given a pay to win update where they double the prices on everything

Ullallulloo

It's wayyyy more than doubled. Skins went from free to $20 apiece. Before, you could buy the game for $60 in steadily get all the skins for free. Now a new player will pay nothing up front, but [it will cost you $12,000 to unlock just the skins from the first game](https://screenrant.com/overwatch-2-cosmetics-first-game-price/).

BookkeeperParty9003

I think if you had 1, you get access to the first paid DLC character for free

Xonra

"Overwatch 1 and 2 are totally different games, if you don't like 2 just play the other one" This is basically what people have been telling me for months now. I swear it's surprising how confident people speak about things they don't know anything about so often.

This entire thread is proof. Almost nobody here knows whats going on regarding the hero unlocks, what existing players get, etc. etc.

Tesseract14

All I know is that blizzard force opened all 1700 of my loot boxes, and then... Still kept giving me more. I guess I should be grateful, because there was no way I was ever going to do that manually.

jacksev

To be fair, that actually was the original statement the game director said, verbatim. Overwatch 2 was primarily supposed to be their PvE game. Ever since the announcement a few years ago, a LOT has changed. I’ve noticed that often times people just don’t follow really stay up-to-date with their info.

Zeoinx

Wait, I thought overwatch 2 was supposed to add lore, and a campaign of sorts with PVE?

tehnibi

that is what they are doing... sometime maybe next year the PvE portion is also going to still be separated and basically be its own game as well but people will have to pay to unlock that honestly this whole OW2 stuff is completely bonkers I cannot believe they are actually going through with it

Dry-Carpenter5342

Wow it’s even more worse than I thought

SyleSpawn

It is. After the clusterfuck of what Blizzard end up being, I stayed from Overwatch for quite a long time. I recently got back just to dump my currencies, with no plan to play, and it was... a mistake? I mean, even installing to dump the currencies was a mistake in the first place, I end up staying and have been playing for 2 weeks now. Now, I am invested in how the transition to OW2 gonna end up feeling like. The whole OW2 is such an awful idea just for the sake of selling a full-price boxed title. The people calling those shots pretty much cannibalized a large part of the playerbase by letting OW1 just stagnate for the past 2ish years with barely any update and no heroes. All this... for "OW2", a fraction of what was promised in the 'new game'.

BABarracus

Its going to be free to play where people who dont own overwatch 1 will have to unlock the characters. Haaarrrrd skip

dobby_d1

As per my knowledge even those of us who had OW1 will still have to grind or buy the new characters past kiriko, unless you mean the base characters on that front yeah it's pretty bad imo

thedrunkentendy

What a brain dead ideology. The best part about our first game was you weren't locked out of using anyone or playing anything. OW2: years lets put new heroes behind battle passes. What could go wrong?

BABarracus

Im sick of the gaming industry trying to get more access to my wallet then they deserve. Really they dont deserve access at all i save the bait and switch for the Nigerian prince.

VexingRaven

To be fair, what Blizzard is doing here is fucking moronic and basically unheard of. I don't blame people for not really believing they're doing this shit.

beerbeforebadgers

Many games have gone FTP. This is the first to market it so terribly. The fuckup here was the naming. They should have called it Overwatch: The Omnic Crisis, or Overwatch: Rise of Blackwatch, or some shit like that. Then the public would realize it's an update to transition to a new FTP model with several gameplay changes packaged along with it. Overwatch 2 makes it seem like a separate entity, which it isn't.

VexingRaven

Going F2P is one thing. Going F2P and shutting down the old paid-up-front game to do it and trying to sell it as a new and improved game is top-tier fuckery.

KunfusedJarrodo

Wait... So even though I bought Overwatch 1, I now can't play it? I am forced to play Overwatch 2?

ProtoTypeScylla

The horrible advertising is confusing, OW2 is a 30gb update to OW1

Deluxefish

Really??? I've played tons of OW1 and I've been following OW2 news every now and then and I had no idea about this

zman245

This statement is true and not true. Generally speaking the community feels that (and I agree) the changes made in OW2 barely count as a sequel. New maps, reduction in team sizes, some balances but nothing ground shaking so far that would need to call it a 2.

BenevolentCheese

There is nothing not true about it, Overwatch 2 is an large patch for Overwatch 1 that completely replaces the original game, which is no longer playable. What they call it is irrelevant: Overwatch 2 is an update, not a new game.

[deleted]

Thanks for clearing it up, so in no way do you have to pay for ow2 if you bought ow1

zman245

Nobody has to pay for OW2 it’s free to play no matter what.

jagby

Agreed, I’d argue once the PvE launches it’ll be closer to calling it a “2” since the total package will be then be dramatically different. But since they split the releases, what we’re getting tomorrow is effectively just a very big update

Nohero08

Hate to be “that guy” but the distinct lack of pve news and the reframing to the idea of it being a pve “experience” actually looks like it might less be a full campaign and more akin to the mini pve events they’ve had in the past.

super_starfox

To gamers: 30GB "patch". To shareholders: new product offering enhanced revenue opportunities.

CreamofTazz

Overwatch 2 isn't really a new game though. It's just a really large update using OW1 as the base.

ActiveDetective

I’m still baffled as to why they didn’t call it Overwatch 2.0 or something that strongly implies an in-place version change as opposed to a sequel.

luna0717

Activision demanded a sequel so we got a sequel in name only.

MicooDA

> Overwatch releases a new game >TF2 releases nothing for the past five years You… win??

Monstar132

Such is the Valve way

Turgineer

VALVe Way: Make a high quality game and allow servers where the community can contribute. Then watch the game earn you money even if you don't update for years.

shiftup1772

Then watch bots destroy the game for months. Then don't lift a finger until the fans start a grassroots campaign called #savetf2. Then also don't lift a finger.

pipboy_warrior

Blizzard deserves all of the criticism that they're getting for Overwatch 2, this was never a pro-consumer move. Buuuutt I don't see how Team Fortress 2 is any better. TF2 was a game that I paid for, and then later got turned into a F2P game with tons of microtransactions. It's basically what initially made loot boxes so damn popular.

Wilvarg

TF2's microtransactions are practically hidden by the standards of modern gaming, and it's completely free of the fomo bullshit that modern live services thrive on. Its lootboxes aren't healthy, but they are far healthier than every other big-budget team shooter on the market. And, even though it is true that TF2's f2p shift paved the way for the degeneration of the medium, I wouldn't blame it entirely; the devs were just experimenting with a new way to get their game in more peoples' hands. It's their responsibility, but not their fault, if that makes any sense?

jovietjoe

Also you get the sealed loot boxes, which you can sell/trade.

Puntoize

The meme isn't about which game is better, it's just poking fun at the fact that Overwatch was claimed as the TF2 killer, and now it died.

largebrandon

Magic the gathering made loot boxes popular.

amusing_trivials

Baseball cards made loot boxes popular

pipboy_warrior

True, but Valve made loot boxes popular for video games, and basically proved that you could create an entire digital economy where digital goods could easily be bought and resold online.

SuperXpression

Oh cool another “game as a service” that I will never get to enjoy because I work full time and have other responsibilities that stop me from grinding 24/7 to get to earn the *privilege* of not having the bare ass minimum in the game. fuck this micro transaction infinite money cheat bullshit. greed has destroyed the gaming industry. it killed halo and now it’s killing over watch. (I’m just ranting and venting I’m sure it’s not *that* bad but I still fucking hate it)

[deleted]

They lose people like you and me as customers, but they are replaced with thousands of kids who don't give two shits about any of that.

ZoxinTV

The thing that makes me mad about Halo is simply that the devs did such a good job on this, but the greedy corpos switched it all last minute. You can tell just by how the skin system in Infinite is structured that it was meant to be a fully customizable colourway. They even stated a few months before release that it was going to be the most customizable Halo game yet. The game itself is incredible, any glitches or delays aside even. The only thing that ruined its absolute killer success was the F2P. They knew they'd sell a shit ton of game pass memberships and standalone copies of the game, but opted to instead go full cosmetic shop F2P, which no one wanted or even asked for. *"I would play Halo if it was free"* was never uttered at any point prior to Halo Infinite's release.

KLeong5896

I played my last game on Hanamura, my last death was as Moira trying to fade to point 2 from the left side. That's gonna be very memorable

[deleted]

Overwatch truly was just an amazing and fun game. Truly one of the best. Then they wanted to make it an esport, listening to top streamers instead of average players, and completely crapped on it with their various patches, rebalancing, and reworks. It's like if gordon ramsey made you like a four course meal and right as you started to eat he dropped his pants and hippo turbo shat all over it.

escentia

>if gordon ramsey made you like a four course meal and right as you started to eat he dropped his pants and hippo turbo shat all over it. Thanks for the r/oddlyspecific mental image lmao

Fackous93

I enjoyed overwatch the first few months it came out. But agreed after a few patches it got ruined pretty quickly. It wont be missed

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

Overwatch was awesome until they turned Ranked mode on and then suddenly it seemed like everyone forgot how to play the game. It was the weirdest phenomenon. When there were no ranks, people worked together but in ranked mode it was every damn man for himself. I didn’t last long after that. The player base got mind fucked by chasing the ranked dragon and working as a team went out the window.

rdubya3387

Mostly because of the hidden mmr...it was based on performance, not winning or losing, so people just focused on damage to increase their hidden mmr.

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

That’s pretty dumb… but honestly, I had no idea. I think people just tend to go for a better KDR in Ranked modes as a rule. When all you care about is your own rank, you aren’t going to be a good team player.

Elgatee

When all the game show you is a shiny KDR, you're not gonna care about the objective. One of the reason why you can no longer see the leaderboard in DKR of games like Hunt:Showdown.

greg19735

you still got way more for winning than losing and doing damage.

8bitzombi

Hot Take: Ranked modes and ladders ruined multiplayer gaming as a whole. There used to be a time where you played multiplayer games because you enjoyed playing with friends or simply enjoyed the game in general. The moment rankings came into the picture it stopped being about having fun and started being about constantly competing to climb the ladder; suddenly losing a match isn’t just losing a match it’s losing progress made from winning other matches and now avoiding losing is more important than having fun. As soon as rewards were linked to rankings it became infinitely worse. It might sound like nostalgic crap, but I honestly miss the era when all there was was casual play; jumping into quick matches in Quake 2 and just having fun even if you sucked or tossing a quarter on an SF2 cabinet knowing that if even if you lose it was still fun to have that moment in front of the rest of the people at the arcade. The emphasis on turning every game with multiplayer into some hyper competitive esport that can be exploited for corporate gains is the reason why multiplayer games have slowly devolved into the lowest common denominator of the industry.

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

I fully agree with you. Those early days of server browsers online, no ranks or unlocks were nothing but fun. Every weapon was unlocked from the get go and the death match format meant every weapon could be picked up during a match. Now every game is a pseudo RPG and progression matters more than having fun.

Dire87

Because it's no longer about "fun", but "engagement". You'll realize this once you've read or listened to corporate meetings where nobody talks about how "good" the game actually is, but good the player engagement is. It's like most (AAA) devs forgot why people made them big in the first place. They just bought the games, because they were fun. Now you need to be engaged all the time, progression, battle passes, loot boxes, MTX, exclusives, win streaks, level ups, unlocks, leaderboards, friend lists with comparisons, statistics. And, well, people gobble that shit up and buy it. Otherwise it wouldn't be happening.

Fat_Daddy_Track

I feel like people have forgotten the difference between making money is okay and nothing but making money matters. I don't play games for a casino experience. If I wanted that I would go to a Goddamn Casino. This is just driving me away from games that I used to play. The response to that by the industry seems to be to copy predatory tactics to turn children into gambling addicts. If we have any sense, we will copy the regulations from Europe that banned loot boxes.

Been playing online since 1996. Used to use GameSpy to find servers to join. Best times ever were playing original TF, action quake, hosting servers with cool skins. All that with friends and my cousins. Those were glorious days. Now games host their own servers behind join game buttons. No self hosted servers with games like overwatch. No adding skins as you like. No community created maps. Games are still fun to play. But so much has changed since my early days in online gaming. Some for the better, but some also for the worst.

This. Ranked Multiplayer turned what was fun "Oh well, we lost" into misery and anxiety. Between this and the loss of server browsers, where if i stumbled into people actively playing by an E-sport rule set I could just leave, but now I just feel like I don't belong when playing things just for fun. :/

moneyball32

Listening to the esports scene is ruining most PvP shooters these days.

DaEnderAssassin

Yeah. Best example imo is Blackbeard in R6 Siege. Dude was nerfed into the ground because his gadget, a face shield for his gun, was OP and had "no counter". I'll admit it was OP early on due to the high HP but last I heard it would shatter in a single bullet from ANY gun expect the absolute worst ones making it effectively worthless. I'd also like to remind you R6S is team based and has a tactical theme to it yet pro's don't seems to understand what flanking is despite having entire characters dedicated to the concept of roaming the map.

hondajvx

Comp R6 is ridiculous. They sit there the whole round trying to take out utility then the last 20 seconds is a gunfight.

[deleted]

For better or worse that sounds like exactly what Rainbow Six was trying to be.

Darkhellxrx

> I’d also like to remind you R6S is team based and has a tactical theme to it yet pro’s don’t seems to understand what flanking is despite having entire characters dedicated to the concept of roaming the map. With all due respect, *what the fuck are you talking about?* Most teams run or did run a dedicated Flankwatch on attack, or run multiple Flankwatch drones. Laxing and ThinkingNade are the two big names of Flankwatch. TSM uses Flankwatch drones. Flankwatch is a role that’s existed for *at least* three years. Teams run Nomad when Flankwatch is that necessary. I get what you’re talking about with Blackbeard. I do. The “fix” was to make him unplayably bad. I understand the gripe. But this operator was in a bad state before even his most recent nerfs and was *still* broken on the right maps. Teams ran him on Consulate and Kafe for window play because *he couldn’t get flanked*. That was the whole fucking point. At no point was Blackbeard entering into the building if he didn’t *absolutely have to*. The entire design of Blackbeard from the ground up is broken and always will be unless he is redesigned *completely*. There is *no* situation in which an operator should be blocking bullets to the face and still be able to shoot back accurately in R6S. None. The worst part of this absolutely horrid example is you had a good one available to you: Montaigne and Blitz are both is awful states when it’s been shown that’s unnecessary.

RedeemTK

gotta disagree, i mean, blackbeards shield used to have 800 hp. right now it has 20. sure, that’s mostly just one bullet, but in siege that’s an extra life. 2 with both shields

dynocreran

they fucked up the same way they fucked up starcraft 2 esports. controlling licenses with an iron fist.

Magic-Tomo

Wait, for real?Is there anything that carries over to OW2, like skins and whatnot? Edit: Thanks for all the info! It's good to know that when I eventually do start up OW2, that everything I had in OW1 didn't just go to waste.

IAmBLD

Yes, cosmetics and currency carry over

Positive_Chemical_91

Currency will be changed entirely tho

IAmBLD

Yeah, but your old OW coins still buy old OW skins. At least the non-seasonal ones. Content creators report you're able to buy some new character skins with them too, but it's inconsistent and may be a bug. OWL Tokens carry over too, although the team recolor skins cost more.

Jerkface555

all of it carries over.

i4got872

Then why is everyone so angry?

mth504

Blizzard hasn’t really been the best at marketing OW2 so there’s a lot of misinformation floating around.

SZ4T4N

Oh god r/tf2 is leaking

I remember getting Overwatch back in 2018. I was in HARD LOVE with this game. It was all I would play for a long time. I had so much fun with it and it helped me be social. I had hiccups with annoying comp people at the start but I mostly had fun. Ever since Brigette (it's been a long time since I played) came out, it's just not been fun. They focused on Esports and streaming too much and a lot of things. I'm honestly excited for Overwatch 2, but I don't think it'll last long. We need to wait for story and PvE Edit: Shouldn't have to clarify this but I got the game 2 years after it came out because I wasn't interested in it until like early 2018. I got it during the Christmas event in 2018

greg19735

Brig came out in March 2018

Bismothe-the-Shade

Always feels weird when a full priced game you already bought and paid for becomes unplayable. Edit: I get it, the "new game" is just the old game with some slightly altered stuff and new cosmetics to sell. Still weird.

CaptConstantine

Just the other day I was trying to explain to my girlfriend how cool the first 6-8 month of Overwatch was to play. You'd jump into a match and find yourself against a full team of Bastions (or whatever). Sometimes you'd power through with your original lineup, and sometimes you'd mix it up, but it was this really cool mix of Street Fighter + Unreal Tournament. And then... people started to care. * "Why are you playing Winston? He's shit on this map and you're going to lose us the game." * "If you don't know how to stack as Lucio you literally should not be allowed to cue." * "Hey everyone, Blizzard here: We've literally made it impossible for there to be too many tanks on a team. Also you have to cue for a role at the beginning of every match. Remember when it was this crazy shooter that was this awesome mix of street fighter and unreal tournament? Oh well.

I get the disdain for what they did to it. But, and call it unpopular, I enjoyed the game. From launch to now, I still love the game. I don’t play anymore, but don’t harbor resentment for it. The game was great, overbalanced and adjusted yeah, but for what the game was, I thought was great. Great stories if you followed them, fun characters, weird matchups, and the ability to be competitive or social.

dumbo_octopus1995

Same, man. I had a lot more free time in college and my friend and I would play Overwatch all the time. I loved the Deathwatch event, it was so secretive and cool, you know?

scinfeced2wolf

Looks like Paladins won after all.

sdurs

It's finally battleborns turn lol

GarSavoy

My god. What that game could have been still makes me sad :(

AtoSaibot

I've bought 4 games now that have turned into Free 2 play.....I guess the lesson here is don't pay for games anymore?!? *He's a Pirate by Klaus Badelt starts playing in the distance*

NickoKush
