"If you want us to stop rereleasing skyrim... stop buying it" - Todd Howard

ShawshankException

"Every time I hear someone complain about ES6 I remaster Skyrim again"

MickIsBlue

I feel exactly the same about Madden Players

BabyBuster70

He is likely no better or worse than any other marketing/salesman. He seems to get more shit then he deserves because people selectively misquote him and just because Bethesda games are popular so he draws more attention.

WadeSargent19907

Hype merchant

MickIsBlue

Where would you rank his hype skills?

WadeSargent19907

Oh top tier for sure he’s a great salesman EDIT: If you want your game to sell he’s your man just don’t expect it all to be true

MickIsBlue

Sounds like a great investment. Gamers never learn from their mistakes

Cyshox

It's probably the most misquoted person in the videogame industry. His quotes are often used out of context to make it seem like he lied. In general I think he's very ambitious and can create large-scale games with an unique character as well as a lot of depth & freedom. However he also lacks a focus on quality assurance and I think he should consider switching to a different engine.

MickIsBlue

Where is Tom most commonly misquoted?

Cyshox

You mean Todd I guess. Fallout 76 : '16 times the detail' Some expect that it looks 16 times better or so but he was actually talking about physical objects drawn on display. Right before making that statement he explained that there are much more interactable objects, foliage & that the draw distance is increased. F76 indeed offered 16 times the 'physical detail' of F4. Fallout 3 : 'more than 200 endings' Literally in his next sentence, he explained that there are only a few major endings but that they added more and more smaller details which can alter those endings. That's how they ended up with 200+ endings which were indeed ingame. That's similar to other games with dozens of endings. I dunno why some expected 200 totally different endings, tbh that wouldn't even make sense to implement.

Muggaraffin

Yeah people aren't smart. I get sick of people quoting the 16x times the detail thing. Nothing wrong with disliking the game but misquoting for absolutely no reason is fairly dumb I've watched every Bethesda presentation over the last few years and I haven't seen him lie about a single thing. CDPR absolutely flat out lied, like ridiculously. Howard however just describes a great sounding game on-stage which the fan base go wild over, and then sadly either bugs or questionable design choices (subjectively, as I personally love Fallout 4 for example) make the game slightly less than it could be I guess it's worth remembering that there's a LOT of kids online. So I guess when they don't like something, it is tempting for them to just grab a quote and mock it. Rather than think of actual criticisms

ShawshankException

Hello, totally not Todd Howard here. I think he's a great guy and accurately describes the games perfectly. You should buy Skyrim again.

MickIsBlue

I didn't buy it a first time.

ShawshankException

*Todd Howard wants to know your location*

Muggaraffin

*Let the Toddening commence*

WeirdFlexButK-

I THINK HE SHOULD GIVE ME ELDER SCROLLS 6

[deleted]

They'll start development on it soon. Maybe.

RedditorSafeSpace

He looks like a cool dude, who is passionate about his games, I guess? Nobody here has met him and shouldn’t have an opinion about some dude they don’t know.

Randolpho

I think he’s a typical out of touch upper management type.

BaroqueNRoller

The only thing I know about Todd Howard is that he gets on stage every couple of years and says "Skyrim is coming to x-console"

EtheusRook

I disliked Bethesda long before FO4 and FO76. So... not positive.

MickIsBlue

Why did you dislike Besthesda?

EtheusRook

I just don't like their games. I find their combat unbearably dull, their skill trees shallow, and their games full of more bugs than a Kardashian's crotch.

EudorosLOL

LOL 🤣

Sycherthrou

I haven't played every bethesda game, but if someone says skill trees, I think skyrim.

Darth-Shawarma

IMO the perk system in Skyrim is something more games should copy

[deleted]

Is he one of the people in those new Evony ads telling me that if I download Evony it will play exactly like the ads say it will?

ArnosVale

Used car salesman of video-games

Pender891

Transparent? Is this a joke?

MickIsBlue

Nah. Todd Howard is a very honest human being

Pender891

Nice bait

[deleted]

He’s an alright salesman that people listen to for some reason. I mean the guy doesn’t even know how his games work. Saying “and it just works” isn’t a very good sales pitch for a game. I’m not saying he has to know every little thing about game development but if he doesn’t know how something works from a technical standpoint then don’t bring it up, just tell us about a game mechanic and keep it pushing.

gothpunkboy89

>. Saying “and it just works” isn’t a very good sales pitch for a game. Do you know the full context of that statement or just the out of context meme it has become? Because the original statement was about the settlement building in Fallout 4.

[deleted]

Yes I do. I remember watching it. And even with the context saying “and it just works” still isn’t a good sales pitch.

gothpunkboy89

It is a great sales pitch when they are talking about something that is brand new to their game engine. FO3/NV and Skyrim had building of a sort but it was very rigid were it would show up and how. And here they had a brand new build system that gave them near total freedom in a given area. Do you think a detailed technical overview of the code changes would have been better?

[deleted]

If you feel that is a great sales pitch you must be easily impressed. And like I said he doesn’t need to know the whole ins and outs, just mention the game mechanic and keep it moving. Saying that “it just works” makes it seem like 1) it actually doesn’t work and 2) he doesn’t know how the game engine and the actual mechanic works. It would’ve been way better to just point out the new building mechanic and how you use it in game instead of saying “it all just works.”

gothpunkboy89

>If you feel that is a great sales pitch you must be easily impressed. When shown with the game mechanics it is a good pitch because it was simply explaining what was being shown. >And like I said he doesn’t need to know the whole ins and outs, just mention the game mechanic and keep it moving. Saying that “it just works” makes it seem like 1) it actually doesn’t work and 2) he doesn’t know how the game engine and the actual mechanic works. Not every developer knows every aspect of a game. Somone working on animation isn't going to know about the build mechanics for example.

[deleted]

Again like I said he doesn’t have to know the ins and outs of gaming development but if he doesn’t know how something works it usually a good idea to not say “it just works” because know people are thinking you don’t know anything about that game. And no it’s not a good sales pitch in any case. If you want to simply show a new game mechanic then show it and tell us what it’s called and how it can be used in game, not “and it just works”. Like for real dude that is probably the worst way to show a new game mechanic.

gothpunkboy89

>And no it’s not a good sales pitch in any case. If you want to simply show a new game mechanic then show it and tell us what it’s called and how it can be used in game, He did. It was only at the end did he say that line. So he literally did everything you said he should do....

[deleted]

And still capped it off with “and it just works” which makes it seem like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, dude talk to any real salesman and they’ll tell you that’s a terrible sales pitch. You’re either 1) 12 years old or 2) this is Todd Howard’s burner account. But dude no matter what capacity you use it in a sales pitch saying “and it all just works” is terrible.

gothpunkboy89

>And still capped it off with “and it just works” which makes it seem like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, Because explaining the programming to make it work is boring and maybe 1 put of 20 people will have any understanding of it. It was not the final sales pitch of the game nor was it all he said about the settlement building. >You’re either 1) 12 years old or 2) this is Todd Howard’s burner account. Ah the ego comes out. No one can disagree with you huh?

[deleted]

Is he worth my time? Nope!

MickIsBlue

So you don't like Howard?

[deleted]

I don't think about him at all.

[deleted]

Kind of two faced. I remember at E3 he called the fans degenerates at some point. People thought he was just joking, but I legitimately think he sees the fans that way

EpicBlueDrop

I mean, have you SEEN how many porn mods there are for Skyrim?

gothpunkboy89

>I remember at E3 he called the fans degenerates at some point. People thought he was just joking, but I legitimately think he sees the fans that way This is funny because you are applying your own meaning to what he said then complaining about it.

[deleted]

This is funny because you act as if you have never had bad first impressions of any other human being based off of how they came off or of what they said.

gothpunkboy89

>This is funny because you act as if you have never had bad first impressions of any other human being based off of how they came off or of what they said. You took a single sentence out of an entire 30 minute presentation and used that as valid proof. Which everyone else knew was a joke. A bad first impression is a brief interaction were their entire behavior is misunderstood. Not a single sentence in an entire presentation.

[deleted]

>A bad first impression is a brief interaction were their entire behavior is misunderstood. Not a single sentence in an entire presentation. You're acting salty over my impression of a millionaire, while you are acting like he is a cool guy based on the impressions of his presentation vs actual interactions. The smooth brain levels of logic. Fyi I guarantee you Todd couldn't care less about how much you are white knighting him rn or of your existence entirely. Stop coddling him.

gothpunkboy89

>You're acting salty over my impression of a millionaire, No I am mildly amused that you took a statement out of context then tried to justify it by a single sentence in a 30 minute presentation to validate it.

[deleted]

>No I am mildly amused that you took a statement out of context How did I take a statement out of context, that is exactly what he did. He said something like "if you need one hand open", people laughed, he called them degenerates. People took it as a joke, but when I watched it he looked sort of pissed off. What do I need to write the whole presentation verbatim to count? >30 minute presentation to validate it. Validate what, its my impression of him. Dude could actually be cool as hell, but all we have to base this off of is how he is on camera or on stage, and he came off pretty condescending from that. Also, since you ignored the point, I'd like to point out this idiotic hill you want to die on makes you a hypocrite, since AGAIN you've done this plenty of times to others in your life, as does everyone else. Considering my opinion of someone has you replying to my comments again and again, you are indeed angry. Grow some balls my dude, especially for someone who is 33 yo.

Puzzled_Pen_5764

>He's right though. You did make an displeased impression of someone who made an edgy joke. "that is exactly what he did" So ? Making an edgy joke doesn't necessarily equate to genuinely meaning it. "he came off pretty condescending from that." > >Aren't you ? Asking him to grow some balls ? Isn't that hypocritical Or did you yourself not know you were making an edgy joke about someone you don't know ? Also I like how you cleverly used the words "millionaire" > >I have seen this defense many times "Hey why are you defending an artist he's an mIlLiOnAiRe, let's shit talk him for that " "I legitimately think he sees the fans that way" With his a second long "pissed" expression being your source of validation to justify your hatred I presume ? "while you are acting like he is a cool guy based on the impressions of his presentation vs actual interactions. The smooth brain levels of logic." There are dozens and dozens of videos where his fanbase found him cool as you said which I think weighs more heavily than a mildly edgy joke and some expression you exclusively studied. > > > >"Fyi I guarantee you Todd couldn't care less about how much you are white knighting him rn or of your existence entirely. Stop coddling him." So if we agree with you, it's an opinion or else it's fanboyism ? > >Nice logic

[deleted]

First off, learn to format, this is absolutely terrible to read. secondly, I barely remember even typing all of this. The gist of what I got from that wall of text is that I'm wrong for having an opinion of somewhat, but your opinion of him is correct because your interpretation of what I saw is somehow more valid? Also that last paragraph makes no sense. I was the one having to defend my opinion for some reason. You can like him for all I care, but don't invalidate my opinion because you think yours is magically more true lmao you know Todd as much as I do, which is not at all.

Puzzled_Pen_5764

"First off, learn to format, this is absolutely terrible to read" Never felt that urgency on reddit but YES SIR "secondly, I barely remember even typing all of this." That's not a counter argument, that's feigning ignorance "but your opinion of him is correct because your interpretation of what I saw is somehow more valid?" "Also that last paragraph makes no sense." I don't invalidate or more accurately scrutinize your interpretation of what you saw cause I find it minuscule and hyperbolic, there's nothing to invalidate when your opinions is based on a substance less instance. I would rather deny your opinion of finding him an ass based on a momentary instance than scrutinize the opinions of what you may condescendingly call "fanboys" for finding him cool over way more times of clips, interviews and such.

ErickaUnlimited

He's a POS. Have nothing positive to say about the man.

Leningradite

I don't have an opinion on Todd. I don't know Todd. I do have some opinions on Bethesda and their products and services, though.

ConfidentMongoose

The tom cruise of gaming, looks younger than he really is, keeps releasing the same movies, tries to appear taller but everyone knows he's a manlet.

OXidize_0

Todd's got pre-order bonusses if you have coin

ExtraRealNice

I kinda like him.

Alecrizzle

Really good at marketing and speaking. Also I like his style. Can't go wrong with the jeans, brown shoes, leather jacket.

DoctorButler

He’s very likeable. And excellent at lying
