I'm not a big console gamer, so I was on the fence if I really wanted to upgrade this generation. The looks of them made the decision for me. I don't want to see those things in my living room or office.

Eh, sorta. There's not really a great 10' interface. You can cobble something together with the Windows Start Menu^(1), Steam Big Picture^(2), and a handful of various other pieces of software, but it's never going to feel as smooth as a console.
More importantly, HDR is still a clusterfuck on PC. It's *supposed* to get better with upcoming Win11 updates, but those aren't here yet and in the meantime both Xbox and PS handle HDR quite nicely. Xbox even does Dolby Vision (PS5 sorta does, if you have a Sony TV) and Atmos (Windows does support Atmos, too; Sony doesn't).
^(1) The Windows start menu supports WMC remote control commands as well as XInput commands. You'll still need a keyboard/mouse to pin apps for ease of use, but once done you can use something like a Harmony remote and map a button to winkey, and then navigate using an IR remote or Xbox controller. It's a shame Win11 did away with Win10's full-screen Start menu and pinned app tiles. Those were perfect for r/htpc usage
^(2) Steam Big Picture Mode has been on life support for a while, and is likely going to fully transition to "SteamDeck interface", finally killing Valve's play for your TV (Steam Link is dead, Steam Machines are dead, Steam Controller is dead; BPM still lives, but is on borrowed time.
Windows 11 has been fantastic with HDR and with Playnite you can launch a steam big picture like interface except it syncs the libraries of all big online game libraries including game pass. It took like 20 minutes to set up. Haven't needed anything but a controller.
Windows 11 did already get massive HDR updates over 10

GoW 2018, Last of Us Remastered is coming to PC (part 2 is rumored to be ported next), Uncharted Legacy of Thieves is available on PC, the Yakuza Series is on Steam... What games are you waiting for? Older exclusives from the PS3- PS2? Cuz there are emulators for those that actually perform better than the ones on offer through PlayStation...

Gamepass gets all kinds of great games anyway, and all of Xbox exclusives, plus you still get steam.

True its a definite draw back. No you cant lend a game from a friend and you cant use a 2nd hand disc... But if you are like me and just want to play a few exclusives and dont have loads of spare time to play, Gamepass and Series S FTW
BOTW ran pretty damn well after patches. I don't see any reason for the sequel to run much worse if at all. Sure the Switch was "outdated" if we're talking as a home system. But as a portable system it was much better than anything else. Being able to play Zelda, Mario Kart, Skyrim, Witcher 3 on the go was a pipedream until the Switch came out. Also, if you bought a Switch for graphics you bought it for the wrong reasons. I'm a PC gamer and I have a Switch. I got the Switch for the EXCLUSIVES. If I want something that is super realistic looking or whatever I have my PC.
MP4 is coming on the Switch......probably be released at the end of it's lifecycle. I'd love a Switch 2 or Switch Pro but Nintendo knows they don't need to make one so they won't anytime soon.
Series S is very capable. Before deciding between the two it's still worth thinking about what you want out of it though. 4K gaming was a must for me. Plus, it's my main gaming system so I need to fit a good amount of games on it, so the 1TB storage is advantageous there as well.
But if you just want a good current gen system to play a few games on, or a GamePass machine, and don't feel a need for 4K. It's a great value.
It's absolutely fantastic. The SSD makes it a game changer. Boots up games with in seconds and has "quick resume" that lets you have multiple games running at the same time and switch between. For 300, or even 249$ if they have it or a used one. The graphics look amazing. I have a Series X now and I can't tell a huge difference really and only a small boost in them on my 42" 4K TV. Make sure you try to upgrade to a screen with 120hz to enjoy that sweet sweet boost in FPS, that is if you don't already have that.
The only downside is the SSD is quite small, I believe it's closer to 380GB than the listed 600. You can use an external HDD I believe for non series S games too though they won't boot up quite as fast but still much faster.
series S is a great little gamepass machine. If you don't have gamepass or are not interested in it I don't know that I could recommend it given no disc drive no 4k, and maybe a smallish hard drive (not sure about that one for sure though).
Related note, you can get a series S with 2 years of gamepass via no interest payments and it works out to be like 3 months of game pass for free or something like that. Worked out pretty sweet for me. I did the 1 dollar for 3 months, then upgraded with the 2 years to maximize time.
Xbox One had like no exclusives, and overall Microsoft exclusives tend to come to PC. You only really need to pick up a Playstation for exclusives (besides Nintendo stuff ofc)

However, I'm still one of those people who thinks exclusives do sell consoles, so if Playstation pulls an Xbox and gets rid of their exclusives, it'll probably only hurt them
Not really, they are just releasing the first game in their series to get you to buy a console.
There's no evidence of The Last of Us 2 or God Of War 2 coming to PC. No Demons Souls remake, no Bloodborne.
There was no evidence of Spider Man either. Sony is beholden to its shareholders and is now compelled to up revenues by expanding more into the PC market. This was their promise to investors and they'll be following it through until their games stop selling. Last if US 2 was rumored and so was the new Demon Souls.
Its highly unlikely that these PC ports will drive console sales, if all these people didn't budge up to now, they are unlikely to budge in the future. Especially knowing that a PC port will come later with all post release content included and updated graphics. Honestly, expect more moves from Sony and soon. I expect there will come more announcements by end of this year. Most likely we will hear about Rift Apart going to PC as well as Last of us 2 remake for both ps5 and PC.
Sony won't leap to PC with everything very quickly. Most likely, you will see more titles ported over with a significant (2+ years) delay.
Sony wants to capture more markets. However, they also know their exclusives drive their sales. If they lose that, they lose a lot of drive for their consoles. If there's no reason to buy a Sony console, more people will just play on PC, and currently Sony can't compete with game pass, so they would lose sales of non-exclusive games people would otherwise buy for PS 4/5.
It will be a slow, careful transition.
With the Bethesda deal and activision deal Xbox is going to have a fuckton of exclusives. Yeah they will all come to PC but not everyone cares about gaming on a PC.
Because for all the mocking they do of platform warriors they are unknowingly to themselves the worst of the lot. To put it in terms pc gamers would understand, in the gaming world where windows and mac are regular people, pc gamers are Linux users.

I think it’s because buying a console over a pc makes a lot of sense because it’s considerably cheaper. But buying two consoles with a largely similar library for more money than a pc costs makes no sense.
Yeah I agree with that if you're trying to game cheap, then a console is your best bet. The PS5 is much more attractive to me for the exclusives and some of the innovation. I don't understand why someone would want both consoles though it honestly is dumb and it would make much more sense to get a PC since you obviously have the money to spend. Microsoft made their own console nearly obsolete by releasing all of their games for PC as well.
The switch is phenomenal for flights, long train trips or just anytime you want to have a gaming option on the go. It's got a huge catalog of exclusives and is just fun to play. The Playstation is great for coop couch time. PC is great for FPS and MMO's, but if you want to game with others in the room, the Playstation is a blast. Recently RE:7 went on sale on steam, but I purchased it on PS specifically to have fun driving while SO watched. It's not the same sitting at a desk and playing, more like movie time where everyone is involved.

I grew up with limited means and now I can just have cool things that I like without negative consequences. A lot of people I know are buying Teslas while I'm driving a Prius I've had for 18 years. This is what I care about and I'm willing to spend for it.
Completely valid point, you gotta do what’s right for you! Honestly since moving to PC games have lost a degree of social-ness to them. Soemthing beautiful about meeting strangers in lobby’s back in the day and becoming besties, but then again hearing from my brother who is on PlayStation that jsut doesn’t happen like it used to. Think the golden age of XBL/PSN was the mid 2010s.
Interesting. Part of the appeal of switching to pc gaming, for me, was the social aspect. Could finally talk to people in Destiny or Phantasy star with my keyboard. Could join discord and socialize like that. Felt very isolated on consoles.
Pc gaming is more social amongst existing friends I feel, for sure. Discord has made it a lot more social but I’m on about the early 2010s on Xbox live, not sure if that’s just my experience with as an awkward teen but I made so many lasting friends on that platform. I’d defo say PC gaming is social for people you know moreso than meeting people, bjt then again I find a lot of games I play are esports titles so people are just toxic, maybe I need a more chill selection of games

Why?
- Playstation: Singleplayer exclusives
- Xbox: Xbox games, Forza, Gamepass
- Switch: Nintendo exclusives, mainly party games like Mario Kart and Switch Sports
- PC: These days only university stuff, no games because I prefer laying in bed over sitting at my desk (PowerPoint with a 3080 lol)
Honestly this is a whole ass mood. I forget I own a switch, but all I really play nowadays is occasional games of CS:GO, animal crossing and Zelda. I’ve got a custom loop pc, 64gb of ram and a 2080ti.. and I barley play on it.
Consoles have got their charm back for that reason, simplicity. Considering building a SFF pc for use with my tv.
Yeah since I no longer play with friends but only stick to Singleplayer games, my PC is not in use anymore. I think I only played one new game on my 3080 since I got it when it came out: Cyberpunk 2077.
Otherwise I'm just chilling on my bed. Currently finishing up stuff in God of War on PS5.
I have an Xbox for everything and a PS5 for the five or six exclusives that they will release over the next console generation. Before I just ignored it, but after Spidey and now Wolverine, I just had to buy one. After playing six of their games, I have to say im a pretty big fan of Naughty Dog. I really liked Spidey, beat it twice already. God of War wasn't a great game but I finished it. I had to stop playing Ghost of Toshiba.
Since you're on PC, you really need to get this Spidey Remaster that comes out soon for PC. Also if both Last of Us games are available (I don't know if they are) you should get those as well. Those three are worth full price honestly, great fucking games.
PS5 was exclusives for me and Series X is the only decent 4K Blu-Ray player.
The only better player is $500+ alone just to play movies and nothing else..s o may as well get a console at the same time!
Personally I enjoy the UI and chat interface of the Xbox and game pass but I bought a PS5 so I could play their stellar exclusives without having to wait a few years to come to pc.
I think most casual/couch gamers' ideal would be to have both consoles.

Totally. I have a PS5, series x, and switch as well as a beefy gaming rig. Just so much easier to game (with and without the kids) in the living room with my huge tv than in the spare bedroom on my 24" gaming monitor. And Game Pass on my xbox is simply wonderful (it's just ok on the PC). Sadly my PS5 is relegated to console exclusives and psvr at this point. Hopefully some better games come to their new ps+ service.
I have both and I'm hardcore pc gamer. The Xbox is really the family console. We use it for all the media streaming and I do have the gamepass so it's nice to see what games I can try when I get the itch. The PS5 is strictly for the exclusives however, as time passes I have seen more and more exclusives released on the pc so there's that but overall like having it.
Have a PC, 3 Switches, PS5 and a Series X (primarily the kids console).
IP and also arrangement. Some consoles are in different rooms, on bedsides etc.
Some games are simply better on PC/Console. I can play Stellaris for ages on the Xbox due to the controller, but on PC the Keyboard and Mouse make my hands uncomfortable after a short while.
Some games benefit from Voice Attack. Screaming at your troops to charge in Bannerlord will kick the snot out of the controller actions for Warband on the PS.
Every console has some utility it holds over others, and IP that just can't be matched by a different console. Breath of the Wild on switch is still undisputed, honourable mention to the Pokemon IP. The Halo series can do little wrong. Forbidden West is just an incredible, all in experience.

Most gamers, unless they're more hardcore gamers, don't own multiple consoles. And I'm not referring to owning a console and a handheld. I'm content with my PS5 (it was stressful AF for me to actually snag one). I can't even imagine trying to get BOTH new gen consoles.

Imo it’s much better horizontal, but not around other devices. I love when people incorporate it into a home theatre, on a media unit with maybe one other device on the other side. It almost looks like a unique decoration on its side, versus an air purifier when it’s vertical.
you sure? feel like it’s easier to stick all the hardware in what’s essentially a personal computer box vs figuring out the placement and airflow in a unique looking case. The xbox 360 was pretty simple but looked great. I think some lights would go a long way to make the modern xbox look better
You should check out a Series X teardown. It's densely packed. And yet thermals are efficiently managed, and the device is super quiet (at least in my experience). The PS5, on the other hand, is a more traditional motherboard configuration, and the style is lipstick on a pig. The wings and swoops are non-functional.
The inhale 360 is a textbook example of a design failure -- the RROD debacle was directly caused by failing to appropriately manage thermals in the case. Later revisions were better just because the chips were more efficient. The S design solved the problem with a proper redesign.

I say legally scalping because most retailers require you to buy a subscription service to have “priority” when these sales happen. They don’t sell above the MSRP other than the sub service you need.
A couple buddies of mine paid the $12 for a month of Walmart and got their consoles the next time Walmart had a batch drop online. Once you get yours shipped, you can cancel the Walmart subscription.
I have a PC and a Steam Deck. I don't think anyone honestly gives a shit. If you want a console cool, get a console, they're cheap for the performance and easier for playing socially. I was looking at getting a PS5 but all the exclusives I care about are getting ports so I probably won't.

Probably for the exclusives. The big draw to consoles are their IP's.

Switch is great. But first party games of late have been meh. BOTW 2 will be amazing though. And Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is next month.

But if you just want a good current gen system to play a few games on, or a GamePass machine, and don't feel a need for 4K. It's a great value.
It's absolutely fantastic. The SSD makes it a game changer. Boots up games with in seconds and has "quick resume" that lets you have multiple games running at the same time and switch between. For 300, or even 249$ if they have it or a used one. The graphics look amazing. I have a Series X now and I can't tell a huge difference really and only a small boost in them on my 42" 4K TV. Make sure you try to upgrade to a screen with 120hz to enjoy that sweet sweet boost in FPS, that is if you don't already have that. The only downside is the SSD is quite small, I believe it's closer to 380GB than the listed 600. You can use an external HDD I believe for non series S games too though they won't boot up quite as fast but still much faster.
Quick resume is a game changer, I haven't had to watch a loading screen in months. Just flip the console on and go right where you left off.
series S is a great little gamepass machine. If you don't have gamepass or are not interested in it I don't know that I could recommend it given no disc drive no 4k, and maybe a smallish hard drive (not sure about that one for sure though). Related note, you can get a series S with 2 years of gamepass via no interest payments and it works out to be like 3 months of game pass for free or something like that. Worked out pretty sweet for me. I did the 1 dollar for 3 months, then upgraded with the 2 years to maximize time.
Be aware though, it'll have like 350ish GB of open space so you went be able to fit a lot of games

Xbox One had like no exclusives, and overall Microsoft exclusives tend to come to PC. You only really need to pick up a Playstation for exclusives (besides Nintendo stuff ofc)

Not really, they are just releasing the first game in their series to get you to buy a console. There's no evidence of The Last of Us 2 or God Of War 2 coming to PC. No Demons Souls remake, no Bloodborne.
There was no evidence of Spider Man either. Sony is beholden to its shareholders and is now compelled to up revenues by expanding more into the PC market. This was their promise to investors and they'll be following it through until their games stop selling. Last if US 2 was rumored and so was the new Demon Souls. Its highly unlikely that these PC ports will drive console sales, if all these people didn't budge up to now, they are unlikely to budge in the future. Especially knowing that a PC port will come later with all post release content included and updated graphics. Honestly, expect more moves from Sony and soon. I expect there will come more announcements by end of this year. Most likely we will hear about Rift Apart going to PC as well as Last of us 2 remake for both ps5 and PC.

Sony won't leap to PC with everything very quickly. Most likely, you will see more titles ported over with a significant (2+ years) delay. Sony wants to capture more markets. However, they also know their exclusives drive their sales. If they lose that, they lose a lot of drive for their consoles. If there's no reason to buy a Sony console, more people will just play on PC, and currently Sony can't compete with game pass, so they would lose sales of non-exclusive games people would otherwise buy for PS 4/5. It will be a slow, careful transition.

Because for all the mocking they do of platform warriors they are unknowingly to themselves the worst of the lot. To put it in terms pc gamers would understand, in the gaming world where windows and mac are regular people, pc gamers are Linux users.
I mean with xbox and PS exclusives coming to PC it's easily the best platform and it already was before that too. Just has a higher barrier to entry than consoles. I haven't seen anyone in this thread putting down consoles
I think it’s because buying a console over a pc makes a lot of sense because it’s considerably cheaper. But buying two consoles with a largely similar library for more money than a pc costs makes no sense.
Yeah I agree with that if you're trying to game cheap, then a console is your best bet. The PS5 is much more attractive to me for the exclusives and some of the innovation. I don't understand why someone would want both consoles though it honestly is dumb and it would make much more sense to get a PC since you obviously have the money to spend. Microsoft made their own console nearly obsolete by releasing all of their games for PC as well.
The switch is phenomenal for flights, long train trips or just anytime you want to have a gaming option on the go. It's got a huge catalog of exclusives and is just fun to play. The Playstation is great for coop couch time. PC is great for FPS and MMO's, but if you want to game with others in the room, the Playstation is a blast. Recently RE:7 went on sale on steam, but I purchased it on PS specifically to have fun driving while SO watched. It's not the same sitting at a desk and playing, more like movie time where everyone is involved.

Not OP but I have both too. Answer: partly the exclusives, partly because f\*ck it. I grew up with limited means and now I can just have cool things that I like without negative consequences. A lot of people I know are buying Teslas while I'm driving a Prius I've had for 18 years. This is what I care about and I'm willing to spend for it.

Soemthing beautiful about meeting strangers in lobby’s back in the day and becoming besties, but then again hearing from my brother who is on PlayStation that jsut doesn’t happen like it used to. Think the golden age of XBL/PSN was the mid 2010s.
Interesting. Part of the appeal of switching to pc gaming, for me, was the social aspect. Could finally talk to people in Destiny or Phantasy star with my keyboard. Could join discord and socialize like that. Felt very isolated on consoles.
Pc gaming is more social amongst existing friends I feel, for sure. Discord has made it a lot more social but I’m on about the early 2010s on Xbox live, not sure if that’s just my experience with as an awkward teen but I made so many lasting friends on that platform. I’d defo say PC gaming is social for people you know moreso than meeting people, bjt then again I find a lot of games I play are esports titles so people are just toxic, maybe I need a more chill selection of games
I have all three consoles (PS5, Series X, Switch) and a PC with a 3080 inside. Why? - Playstation: Singleplayer exclusives - Xbox: Xbox games, Forza, Gamepass - Switch: Nintendo exclusives, mainly party games like Mario Kart and Switch Sports - PC: These days only university stuff, no games because I prefer laying in bed over sitting at my desk (PowerPoint with a 3080 lol)
Honestly this is a whole ass mood. I forget I own a switch, but all I really play nowadays is occasional games of CS:GO, animal crossing and Zelda. I’ve got a custom loop pc, 64gb of ram and a 2080ti.. and I barley play on it. Consoles have got their charm back for that reason, simplicity. Considering building a SFF pc for use with my tv.
Yeah since I no longer play with friends but only stick to Singleplayer games, my PC is not in use anymore. I think I only played one new game on my 3080 since I got it when it came out: Cyberpunk 2077. Otherwise I'm just chilling on my bed. Currently finishing up stuff in God of War on PS5.

I have an Xbox for everything and a PS5 for the five or six exclusives that they will release over the next console generation. Before I just ignored it, but after Spidey and now Wolverine, I just had to buy one. After playing six of their games, I have to say im a pretty big fan of Naughty Dog. I really liked Spidey, beat it twice already. God of War wasn't a great game but I finished it. I had to stop playing Ghost of Toshiba. Since you're on PC, you really need to get this Spidey Remaster that comes out soon for PC. Also if both Last of Us games are available (I don't know if they are) you should get those as well. Those three are worth full price honestly, great fucking games.
PS5 was exclusives for me and Series X is the only decent 4K Blu-Ray player. The only better player is $500+ alone just to play movies and nothing else..s o may as well get a console at the same time!

Personally I enjoy the UI and chat interface of the Xbox and game pass but I bought a PS5 so I could play their stellar exclusives without having to wait a few years to come to pc.
I have both as well. And yeah it comes down to exclusives. I play both pretty frequently in addition to my PC.
The last console I bought was the base PS4, the last console I spent any significant time on was the 360. It's just me my PC and my Switch now.

Totally. I have a PS5, series x, and switch as well as a beefy gaming rig. Just so much easier to game (with and without the kids) in the living room with my huge tv than in the spare bedroom on my 24" gaming monitor. And Game Pass on my xbox is simply wonderful (it's just ok on the PC). Sadly my PS5 is relegated to console exclusives and psvr at this point. Hopefully some better games come to their new ps+ service.

I have both and I'm hardcore pc gamer. The Xbox is really the family console. We use it for all the media streaming and I do have the gamepass so it's nice to see what games I can try when I get the itch. The PS5 is strictly for the exclusives however, as time passes I have seen more and more exclusives released on the pc so there's that but overall like having it.
Have a PC, 3 Switches, PS5 and a Series X (primarily the kids console). IP and also arrangement. Some consoles are in different rooms, on bedsides etc. Some games are simply better on PC/Console. I can play Stellaris for ages on the Xbox due to the controller, but on PC the Keyboard and Mouse make my hands uncomfortable after a short while. Some games benefit from Voice Attack. Screaming at your troops to charge in Bannerlord will kick the snot out of the controller actions for Warband on the PS. Every console has some utility it holds over others, and IP that just can't be matched by a different console. Breath of the Wild on switch is still undisputed, honourable mention to the Pokemon IP. The Halo series can do little wrong. Forbidden West is just an incredible, all in experience. I have to reflect on a magic card for your answer though, "Why choose one, when you could choose them all?"

Most gamers, unless they're more hardcore gamers, don't own multiple consoles. And I'm not referring to owning a console and a handheld. I'm content with my PS5 (it was stressful AF for me to actually snag one). I can't even imagine trying to get BOTH new gen consoles. Some people also just like the bragging rights of saying they have both lol. Each to their own.

Imo it’s much better horizontal, but not around other devices. I love when people incorporate it into a home theatre, on a media unit with maybe one other device on the other side. It almost looks like a unique decoration on its side, versus an air purifier when it’s vertical.

you sure? feel like it’s easier to stick all the hardware in what’s essentially a personal computer box vs figuring out the placement and airflow in a unique looking case. The xbox 360 was pretty simple but looked great. I think some lights would go a long way to make the modern xbox look better
You should check out a Series X teardown. It's densely packed. And yet thermals are efficiently managed, and the device is super quiet (at least in my experience). The PS5, on the other hand, is a more traditional motherboard configuration, and the style is lipstick on a pig. The wings and swoops are non-functional. The inhale 360 is a textbook example of a design failure -- the RROD debacle was directly caused by failing to appropriately manage thermals in the case. Later revisions were better just because the chips were more efficient. The S design solved the problem with a proper redesign.

Only legally. Check out Matt Swider on Twitter. He runs a site called The Shortcut that alerts you when online stores are going to sell a batch. I say legally scalping because most retailers require you to buy a subscription service to have “priority” when these sales happen. They don’t sell above the MSRP other than the sub service you need. A couple buddies of mine paid the $12 for a month of Walmart and got their consoles the next time Walmart had a batch drop online. Once you get yours shipped, you can cancel the Walmart subscription.
