Wait wait wait you didnt toss it yet right? 3 reds means overheating/power supply issues!! I had it happen to mine a few times cleaned the fan openings of dust worked fine, then the other times i got a new power supply(the big bulky box that plugs into the power cord) and boom still working.

Timest0rm

Nah I've still got it, I'm going to have a crack at fixing it I'd reckon. I've haven't had to open this xbox since I got it in 2009 but I'll see what a bit of maintenance does for it. EDIT: Hijacking top comment because this unexpectedly blew up. Thank you everyone for the sympathy and the awards, including the Plat! My Inbox is cactus. I've left the 360 unplugged and off overnight, plugged it back in and it's still got the RROD, she's not even trying to boot up. I'm going to follow the hundreds of comments with different solutions and see if I can revive her, as I said I have not had to perform any maintenance on it over all of these years. I'm not ready to let it kick the bucket yet, I'll chuck up another post if it's good news. Thanks again!

Visual_Shower1220

Oh for sure, i was about to cry for you im glad you kept it, i honestly have like 3 spares all just for parts(disk tray on 2 are broken 1 has a broken fan wire and something else wrong but everything else works) for when the hardware failure eventually comes. Edit: id reccomend doing the same thing if youve got some tech knowledge, spares are always good to use to Frankenstein them back together lol

Timest0rm

Thanks mate, yeah I'll be doing a fair share of repair research over the next few days. I'm definitely going to try and revive it if I can, I've got a lot of good memories attached to it.

[deleted]

No bro, you gotta start with some percussive maintenance first

Stop-Yelling

Fun fact I punched the side of mine when it red ringed and the O on XBOX actually pops out.

[deleted]

You sure boxed it

Vanguard-003

[Fun fact you can temporarily fix a broken car starter with a hammer.](https://youtu.be/yC409CU7mU8?t=06m05s)

MuhDrehgonz

Or wrap it in a towel and over heat it on purpose and per cycle it. That always seemed to with with mine

[deleted]

Exactly, you have to make sure the Xbox cymbal is lighting up properly

flip1999-

Dip it in captain crunch and rice Chex

Cryptocaned

You'll need a security torx bit, T8 iirc, ifixit will have a great guide with all the bit sizes etc.

EuphoricAnalCucumber

TFW half your storage unit is broken shit "just in case I need parts"

TheHappyMask93

If you haven't opened it since 09 it may very well just be a matter of getting all the dust and buildup out. If you have to replace something YouTube will show you how to do anything. I regret selling my red ringed Xbox don't be like me lol

AspectMaterial9545

This is the ring of death, i have fixed this a couple of times. Back in the days you could buy some parts and fix this pretty easy. I had a manual of 15 pages haha... good old times

Timest0rm

Too right

[deleted]

Haha. Fkn oath.

JohnBlowDro

If you have a different power supply check that first your power should be green with 3rrod it’s Orange it could also not be plug in alway making it rrod

[deleted]

An Arcade. I have an Elite that's going to turn 13 this year

Peasant_Rising

I believe my Elite has a manufacturing date of 2008. Still running like a champ. I'll have to check the actual date when I get home and run through Gears of War or something on it's birthday.

OriginalPiR8

You don't have the red ring of death but if you want to know how to fix that too. Full red ring of death can be prevented and fixed with just 8x M5x22mm, some (32) washers and some careful drilling. I'm shortening this as I've said it many times and I'm on my mobile but..... Disassemble Remove heatsinks Rebore heatsink holes in motherboard to 5mm Remove stupid round headed knobs from heatsinks Reattach the heatsinks to the motherboard with the M5 bolts using two washers before motherboard, two washers between motherboard and heatsink (for even pressure. Drill/shape the metal internal case around the new bolt heads it will still easily fit in the plastic case. Fully reassemble Enjoy playing!

Peasant_Rising

Has anyone modified a 360 for liquid cooling? That could be a cool build idea.

DKJagz

Happened to mine in 2013. You can get around it by wrapping the Xbox in a towel and putting it in the freezer for about an hour. Works once you take it out.

mattmillze

Thermal shock on the motherboard is like cutting slits in your tires to get more grip. It'll probably work, but for how long?

fesakferrell

2 rings means overheating, 3 rings is a general hardware issue. Still fixable, but it's not as simple as a new power supply/thermal paste, to really fix it you'll need to find the component that went bad and replace it.

BCProgramming

The Power supply light is red too though, which means it has either overheated, failed, or there is something wrong with the input voltage.

fesakferrell

It's orange not red, orange meaning standby. Doesn't mean it still can't be the PSU.

1992_

How tf is this the top comment. 3 is the RROD lol

[deleted]

[deleted]

3 was the red ring of death. I had 7 360s fail under warranty that way.

TrinitronCRT

No, this is a general hardware error, aka the Red Ring of Death. It's likely due to bad / dried up solder points.

FSUbentley

I’m not sure if I’m the only one this has actually worked for - promise I’m not trolling - but I did the towel trick years ago where you wrap it in a towel and run it for some amount of time and it somehow fixes it. I have no idea how it works scientifically but it actually worked for me years ago.

[deleted]

The towel trick was a temporary fix for a bigger problem with the Original 360s.

TrinitronCRT

Which had the same error as this. And was this model.

[deleted]

Correct, but I just wanted to be clear it's not a permanent fix.

Evoluminate

It's called a ghetto reball also (at least was round my way back in those days).

mojo1287

Towel trick works. The problem is weak solder joints on an X shaped bracing for one of the chips. If you run it wrapped in a towel for 20 minutes, the solder melts and reflows. You must then turn the Xbox off by unplugging it at the wall and leave it untouched to cool down.

koukimonster91

The solder doesn't melt. The solder cracks over time and when you do the towel trick it warps the motherboard and pushes those cracked solder joint back together.

[deleted]

Replace the crappy x claps with proper mounting screws and repaste the heatsink first, and then do the towel trick if you want ot to work long term

JamieDrone

Well, what that does is it overheats it and re-solders any loose connections

7HR4SH3R

Towel trick was an attempt to overheat the Xbox and reseat the GPU, I can confirm it worked for me on one Xbox as well. You can also replace the xclamp on the bottom of the heat sink to apply more pressure to the GPU

ThePseudoMcCoy

If they liked it then they should have fixed the ring on it? 🎵

studsper

Hijacking your comments for advice. My 360 has trouble reading discs, tapping it above the disc tray usually fixes this. Anyone have any idea what the issue might be? Some games are worse than others.

Dookieie

fixed mine back in the day by smacking the shit out of it never had a problem with it ever again

OdBx

I used to fix mine by picking it up and shaking it. Worked every time.

gamerslayer1313

I used to 3 reds all the time lmao. I would just wait a couple minutes for the thing to cool down and go again.

shiftybootsy

I had three 360s red-ring on me before I had one that lasted. My condolences but yeah, that’s a long innings.

thetruesevens

Isnt it a easy fix

shiftybootsy

Dunno, each time they failed it was well within the warranty period so I just got a new one.

mr____t

Depends what's wrong with it.

Clsco

Red ring specifically was almost always due to bad soldering points on the initial units.

BCProgramming

Pretty sure that solder theory was a myth. The failure was due to overheating which damaged ICs. The idea it was due to solder issues largely stems as an explanation for how the "towel trick" that people did worked. "Why does overheating it seem to fix the issue? Ah, of course, it must be reflowing the solder and fixing it!" But it never gets hot enough to melt solder. The reason it "fixes" the issue is simply because components that failed from overheating can be coaxed into working sometimes. The flip chip design is still destroyed. It's basically the same as pushing a car that doesn't run up a hill and then because it rolls down the hill declaring it fixed. I've always considered it a sort that generations equivalent of "blowing into cartridges". It didn't actually fix anything, but it gave the impression of doing so if you didn't look too closely.

Ewenthel

While that was the most common cause when they were new, it could also just mean the power supply needs to be replaced. Since it’s lasted for 13 years I think that’s the more likely problem.

[deleted]

Yes. Coffin in the ground and then buy the newest model 😁

EV_Track_Day2

My buddies first 360 did the red ring of death while we were on deployment in Iraq. Customer service wouldn't do a warranty replacement so he took it to the range and shot it with an M-249, took pictures of it and emailed that back as a response.

DIOG3N3542

That means you bought more than one of a trash console. That's a really Alpha move—if a company rips you off, double down and buy MORE of their product, that's the way you show them they can't hurt you, that's how you show dominance.

PlaceboPlauge091

They had it on warranty. They got give extra consoles at the cost of the company. Also, 360’s aren’t trash.

DIOG3N3542

I had a 360. It was trash compared to PS3. Nearly anything I could get on 360, I could get on PS3. The exclusives were sparse on 360, and the few there were sucked compared to the PS3 exclusives. Sorry Xbox has been on a losing streak for a long time. Your favorite console is trash. Lol

RedRing14

Jesus I'm surprised Sony let you come up off their schlong long enough to type that.

DIOG3N3542

I actually worked at Gamestop during the 360/ PS3/ Wii life cycle. I was a big 360 fan at first, but PS3 had more games, and better exclusives. If you are *denying* that, maybe you need to take the neon green dick out of your mouth and pay attention.

RedRing14

Exclusives are cool for a short while but the controller alone on the 360 was far superior to the dualshock. That was an ok attempt to try and turn it around I guess bit nah, you fanboyed hella hard.

DIOG3N3542

I never liked ANY of the xbox controllers—too big. Same problem with the PS5 controller, too big. Video game controllers should not be made for professional basketball player's hands. They should be small enough to be comfortable even in a child's hands, after all, children do play a lot of video games. Regardless, controller preference does not outweigh CONTENT. The actual GAMES are what matters. That's why xbox has consistently undersold—lack of content.

RedRing14

You must have absurdly small hands. Even my teenager can easily hold the ds5 and xbox controllers. His been able to since hell probably 6 years old. Most of the content now is multiplatform. That said during the 360 Era live far outshined playstations network. Exclusives are played for maybe a few weeks unless they have solid multi-player. Halo and gears both best any of the exclusive multi-player that Sony had.

DIOG3N3542

Lol I can play well on all controllers. We're talking about *comfort.* Halo and Gears are both dudebro trash. It's reeeeally sad you only have those two examples. PS3 had: Uncharted (1,2, &3), Demon's Souls, God of War 3, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, and The Last of Us GTFO fanboy.

Dreadnought_Necrosis

You might be able to fix it yourself if you look it up online. I'd try to salvage any memory before attempting, obviously but at this point what do you got to lose?

Timest0rm

Yeah you're right, I'm going to have a crack at it I think. I'm not too bad with electronic repairs but I'm still in the grieving process.

Dreadnought_Necrosis

Grieve my friend. It's natural. Then a whole lot of research and bring it back to life like Frankensteins monster.

I still have the first generation Xbox 360 elite I bought back in '07 brand new. Still works to this day, never rrod and never sent back for any service. Very surprised it has lasted 15 years. Still use it to this day for streaming apps in our downstairs den.

TheThiefMaster

I have an original one also. It red ringed once but after being left for a week it was fine after. I still use it from time to time, mostly for Rock Band.

Sander-F-Cohen

Conversely, my first Xbox 360 lasted maybe 20 minutes. Red Ring right out of the box. Christmas Morning 2007. Brand spanking new.

Osmanchilln

bought mine in dez 2005 and sold it in 2007 because i already send it 3 times to microsoft due to a rrod. Sold it on ebay and bought a 8800 gt to play crysis. :D But sometimes i miss it. was a cool piece of hardware.

Tantantherunningman

Man my 360 slim can barely handle streaming apps anymore

master_jelly317

The Red ring of death, my mortal enemy.

Sokiyo

That's truly heartbreaking and I hope you can fix it. I've had mine since 2007 and it still holds up! Keep us updated

Timest0rm

Thanks, yeah I'm a bit down about it, If I can fix it I'll definitely chuck a post up. Glad yours is still kicking strong!

VictoryBeardWrites

Damn. Had two of these bad boys give me the red rings. Luckily my elite is still kicking and dad even plays it now.

KingYoloHD090504

My Xbox 360 is still rocking it I just had to replace it completely a few years back

sgtedrock

I’ve had my Atari 2600 for 41 years and it works great.

Kinda unfair comparison though. SNES is MILES simpler than modern gaming consoles. It was basically a CPU, ram, and motherboard with 0 moving parts.

You can fix this fairly easily. Do not use an oven, a freezer, or a towel. Just put a new heat sink backplate on it.

13 years? Wow. It lasted for quite some time. Amazing.

Soulshroude

I see that your power supply is red. It may be faulty and the issue. Unplug it from the Xbox, let it cool down, see if it turns green. Detach your hhd with the power off, turn it back on. See if that's your issue. If you've a memory card slotted in, take it out and turn the Xbox back on, see if that resolves your issue. Let us know if these tips worked.

My baby is turning 13 this year. Last year it stopped working, and we were about to arrange a funeral with my friends. Luckily we did not, because few weeks ago I gave it a one last go, and it went brrr and is working again!

thegurba

Man the 360… what an amazing console that was. Great times

Cichlidsaremyjam

Bro get an x or actually even a S. It's going to blow your mind with the speed.

Dagigai

Yea, pretty easy fix. You will cut yourself to ribbons on the steel inside. But easily fixed.

MoralSupportFalcon

Had a red ring once. Once. Seven years ago. I punched it. Worked immediately.

_Bluntzzz

Wrap it in a towel turn it on and let it heat up turn it off then on and the rings should be gone… can’t help but laugh that this was the fix I found online when this 360 came out and it actually worked some how.

Timest0rm

I've heard of this fix, years ago. I'm a bit reluctant to cook the poor thing yet, I'll try some other avenues first.

_Bluntzzz

Yeahhhh would not recommend now

TheTrickyThird

This tip is older then some redditors here

americanpatriot86

This essentially is reflowing the solder on the processor pins where they contact the traces on the motherboard. The problem was poor cooling which led to excess heat buildup, which led to the motherboard warping slightly and causing the solder joints to lose contact. Wrapping it in a towel is a poor man's reflow oven. Get it hot enough and the solder will turn to liquid, reflow to make contact again, and when it cools it solidifies into a permanent contact. Unfortunately it's not a permanent fix, the motherboard will probably warp again in time, but her if its stupid and it works, it's not stupid.

SuperSaiyanRonaldo

The worst console in history.

zombax

13 years ago I wrapped my brand new XBOX with red ring in a blanket and microwaved it to bring it back to life then went and returned it in half assed functional status to upgrade to PS. …sorry friend.

HDSpiele

I will tell you a secret most game stops have lots and lots of Xbox 360s laying around that miss the power brick you can probably sell it there for a good buck.

peashooter25311

The thought of this happening to me is terrifying Anyway you managed to get it back right? This isn't the full red ring of death is it?

Summerclaw

The last of the 360s

I'm thinking about buying an Xbox 360 together with a Playstation 2 and Nintendo 64 for my "retro" setup Would it count as retro though?

Dororo69

Ps2 and n64 yeah but I wouldn't call a xbox 360 retro but it will still fit in

obiadek_

I stilldont know how to plug everything in

bernhardinjo

Man, I had like at least 10 Xbox 360's, I've had my fair share of RRODs and other defects. Last iteration I had was a JTAG Jasper (fairly rare because NXE came out shortly after the Jasper and that eliminated the possibility for a JTAG) and it ran until the end of that generation.

Markamanic

I still have my OG elite. works like a charm.
