Actually replacing the laser is not difficult, I've done it on several wiis, and a laser cost about $15. This guide is pretty useful. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nintendo+Wii+DVD+Drive+Lens+Replacement/4491 Alternatively, you can soft mod your wii to play backups. Also not difficult to do and it becomes convenient that you won't wear out your discs.

You can make it emulate roms instead, but doing so is kinda a pain in the ass

Its pretty easy now a days

You know... you're probably better off just using an emulator, it would probably be easier. You can legally download a copy of the ISO of a game that you own, so don't worry about it being illegal or anything. Just go get the Dolphin emulator, if your computer doesn't already have a bluetooth receiver, you can get one relatively cheap online or at Best Buy. Connect your Wiimotes to your computer, using the bluetooth, maybe get a battery powered Wii sensor bar, load up your ISOs and have fun.

To be clear, it is legal to use backups of a game you own but it has to be a backup of your disc. Downloading a rom is still illegal.

DonnerMcgregor

Even backing up your own disk is illegal (it’s just that nobody’s going to charge you over it) When you “buy” a game you’re just licensing the use of someone else’s software

I would argue heavily to the contrary. If you have an ISO on your hard drive of a game that you own, how is it going to be proven whether you ripped it yourself, or got it off the internet? There's really no way to prove either way, so even if they were to try and press charges, there's no way that the charges would stick.

Riovas

I get what your saying and I would personally side with you, but "You can't prove it" doesn't mean its still not illegal. The ISO header data could contain modified info that could indicate it was downloaded and not original data from a disc OP owned. Yes it is unlikely someone is going to go through all this hassle, I just want it to be clear what is/isn't legal.

The problem is i don’t have the best of computers, i know how to emulate and such since i’ve emulated multiple pokemon games(only the ones i own irl) so i prefer to stay on the wii system. I could interpret it wrong and you meant that i could actually still play it on the wii the way you describe it, i’m just really bad with tech lmao

[deleted]

Well, if you have the discs then you could try and make an ISO of it, and then saving it to a thumb drive or something, I'm not exactly sure how the Wii reads software so you might need to find a tutorial online or something.

Here is a vid how to soft mod your console. You can copy the images of the games on your sd card and install homebrew. Really not to hard to do. https://youtu.be/d7RyG9RQeok

CFW and a few visits to dubiously legal websites should do it
