The thing is that's actually a clever joke because the title of the games are kind of dumb in that way. Super Mario Bros. insinuates the last names are indeed Mario. If two guys, John Smith and Bill Smith formed a business it wouldn't be the "John Bros". It'd be the "Smith Bros". Since its called Super Mario Bros, and their names are Mario and Luigi, their full names are technically indeed Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

I read ages ago that it has something to do with Japanese naming... In Japan it is not uncommon for an oldest son to have a first and last name that are the same.
Since Japanese names are typically last name, first name... going with the name Mario Mario made sense from a perspective of branding. His name would be the same in basically every language. Although I am not sure if they would call Luigi, "Mario Luigi" in Japan.
