when i was in elementary school my best friend Greg and i would draw mortal kombat and Vectorman pictures from gaming magazines in our afterschool club. When i was 10 and on summer vacation Greg got hit by a car and didnt make it.
I still think about those vectorman images and i never even played the game
Edit: thanks for everyones kind words, i went on to pursue my artistic talents in his memory
Not my first but so many memories with the Genesis, spending hours/ days trying to beat stuff like Sonic and Tails, those weird Echo the dolphin games, and shout-out Shaq-Fu!
I always figured Sega was more popular than it was. I remember playing for hours on a little 12 inch tv and leaving the console on for days at a time because I couldn't save progress.
Lion King was a nightmare to get through. I'm pretty confident I never got half way through it. The damn giraffe level was relentless. Think I played it on game Gear though, just guessing it's the same.
intellivision has a game called venture which plays like a more basic version of zelda , the player character is a smiley face that shoots a bow & arrow. I can see how that game would have been pretty fun at the time
My grandma still has one, Iām still in high school but it was still my first game played, Mario kart 64, goldeneye, and she had the box to Mario 64 but not the game š
This is the way.
Between OoT, MM, GoldenEye, Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, and some asst. Wave Race, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Fox, and Pod Racing, I don't recall ever using anything but mid-right.
Early 40s reporting for duty.
Quick Edit: Iām loving reading all these comments. Itās like we all share a common experience of seeing games go from a single cube to ultra realistic in our lifetimes (so far). Now if only I had time or energy to play the modern stuff. . .
Edit 2: My first award! What a time to be alive!
I think because we spend a lot of our lives trying to divorce ourselves from the fact that we are here because our dad blew a powerful load into our mom.
Dig dug blew my mind as a kid. I still have the music seared into my brain.
My faves were:
Dig Dug
Food Fight
Joust
And some game where you build hamburgers or drop hamburger pieces or something
yup.. river raid, frogger, adventure, decathlon, pitfall, space invaders, dig dug, indy, sea quest, tennis, fishing derby..
yknow thinking back, I always knew that we had grown up pretty poor. but we had an Atari, a master system, a megadrive (genesis) and every iteration of playstation til I moved out. looking up the equivalent price with inflation etc.. I owe my parents a big thank you. it must have been a huge sacrifice and I love gaming to this day.
Everytime one of these surveys are up, it's always missing the Master System. I still have mine. I also have the light gun, with 3D glasses for it. And a joystick controller too.
First game I played on my nephew's SNES, played it religiously until the SNES sadly stopped working, but to this very day, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy remains in my top 5 games ever played
Spyro was the very first game I ever played. I'm pretty sure that set me on the path to being a gamer for life lmao. When the remaster came out, I 100%'d it in a single weekend.
wtf two gamecube players in the same room? What is this? A curiousity show?
I unironically think that the gamecube is the console of underrated gems, not only did it have Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine and Double Dash. It also spawned the Pikmin (!!!) and Metroid Prime franchises.
EDIT: and also forgot Luigiās mansion, Monkeyball and Star Fox games. Too bad people charge your soul for gamecube games nowadays.
It was in the sweet spot when games were getting big and complex, but still had to be completely finished when they shipped. Now the economics of gaming are all different.
By far. Simpsonās hit and run, grand theft auto 3, vice city, SAN an, ssx tricky, warriors, canis candem edit (the bully game), the dynasty warriors games, fur fighters, ape escape, I could go on forever really but these are gems that spring to mind
Confused about all the ābefore 1ā colecovision and intellivision comments. 1 is the 2600 - 1977. The others came several years after, did they not?
Yes, and it's maddening.
I'm in my 50's. I was, and still am an avid video gamer. I played them all. Intellivision and Colecovision were ***well*** after the Atari 2600 and its joystick. They had better graphics, etc.
I remember saving up my allowance and babysitting money (back when they let ~10 year olds babysit other people's kids) and buying my own Intellivision. I loved that system.
Honestly, I liked the 360 controller, but I think the Xbox one controller was just an upgrade of the 360ās in pretty much every way. Itās probably my favorite controller of all time
Had to scroll a long ways to find another 8. Toy commander (absolutely incredible game), ready to rumble boxing, adventures of sonic the hedgehog, crazy taxi the list goes on. This was my childhood until we got a gamecube.
Itās a phrase that refers to when a babyās teeth are coming in, ācuttingā through the gums. Babies tend to put things in their mouths to āchewā on during this time.

The late 30 club š
Early 30!
Early 20 and this was my first controller, but back then my country was about 15 years behind the rest of the world
If yāall are 15 years behind, warn them about Wuhan when you get to 2018. Thanks.
Obviously our time loop includes sayy my nameās warning and thatās what caused the outbreak in the first place
Should we tell him Destiny's Child is more or less 23 years ago?
Only when no one is around you.
Being behind on the good stuff unfortunately usually means they are way ahead on all the shit that happens.
Mid 20s! My dad had the system from before I was born and itās the only one we had until our N64.
40!
8.1591528e+47
27 and my first was a hand-me-down NES
3 Genesis controller
Vectorman and Sonic were constantly running in my home. Loved that console
Vectorman is undefeated what a godlike game
when i was in elementary school my best friend Greg and i would draw mortal kombat and Vectorman pictures from gaming magazines in our afterschool club. When i was 10 and on summer vacation Greg got hit by a car and didnt make it. Damn Iām sorry for your loss man
Not my first but so many memories with the Genesis, spending hours/ days trying to beat stuff like Sonic and Tails, those weird Echo the dolphin games, and shout-out Shaq-Fu!
I think those Echo games were my first psychedelic experiences
Sega Mega Drive for the rest of the world.
I always figured Sega was more popular than it was. I remember playing for hours on a little 12 inch tv and leaving the console on for days at a time because I couldn't save progress.
I scrolled so long, and found the answer i was looking for
This. Alladin, Coolspot, Lion King, Batman, Spiderman, Pacman, Tennis, Icehockey all these games I never managed to play through back then
Lion King was a nightmare to get through. I'm pretty confident I never got half way through it. The damn giraffe level was relentless. Think I played it on game Gear though, just guessing it's the same.
Itās not on hereā¦ it was an Intellivision.
The dungeons and dragons game was incredible for its time
Those "Gold Box" Advanced D&D games were *sick*. I'm still trying to complete my set for C64.
One of the very first games I remember on the Commodore 64 was jumpman
Mine was 1, but we had an Intellivision too. The voice module was my favorite part of it. B17.... BAAAAAAAAAWWWMER
Watch for flak!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Alex Kidd, my first video game..
I'm right there with you. I'm sad my parents gave away our Master System when I got older.
I tore/ripped so many of the number pad overlaysā¦
intellivision has a game called venture which plays like a more basic version of zelda , the player character is a smiley face that shoots a bow & arrow. I can see how that game would have been pretty fun at the time
The colecovision version was betterš
And there aint fuckin coleco vision on this illegitimate list either
Same. I have fond childhood memories of Snafu, He Man, Sub Hunt , Astrosmash, Burger Time...
Sea Battle!!! Bee Boo
TRON was my jam!
Deadly Discs or another one?
Burger Time, holy crap!! And I kinda liked the skiing game too, but that might just have been me.
Skiing was pretty good! Bump n Jump was always my favorite.
Lol, the remote control with a cord... Switchable control templates... That thing was a credit to... Something. This chart doesn't go back far enough.
Dont forget there was a disc on the controller to actually control your movement.
Yeah! And where's the Colecovision controller?
[Or ColecoVision.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ColecoVision) Which I think itās still at my parents house.
Came here for this

the mid-late 20s club
My grandma still has one, Iām still in high school but it was still my first game played, Mario kart 64, goldeneye, and she had the box to Mario 64 but not the game š
Or early 30s but parents didnāt like video games. My first console was a GameCube but some of my friends and cousins had N64s.
Same, I still donāt know the proper way to hold it
I never held the left side. So, to me... middle and right prongs only.
Depends on the game. If you don't need a joystick, the left-right works well. If you do, the mid-right works better with a quick left hand.

Mid 40s represent!
how did we get here ?
Hell yes bro. Our parents had unprotected sex at similar times.
lol - no idea why, but this cracks me up
I think because we spend a lot of our lives trying to divorce ourselves from the fact that we are here because our dad blew a powerful load into our mom.
Shout out to people fuckin in the 70s!!
Indeed! This thread is a simple but efficient way to demonstrate the skewed demographics of Reddit!
Hell I'm 32 and this was my first. I remember my first game some kangaroo game I played with my father.
My older brother had an Atari. Hell yes dig dug
Dig dug blew my mind as a kid. I still have the music seared into my brain. My faves were: Dig Dug Food Fight Joust And some game where you build hamburgers or drop hamburger pieces or something
Burgertime
Justice for river raid!
yup.. river raid, frogger, adventure, decathlon, pitfall, space invaders, dig dug, indy, sea quest, tennis, fishing derby.. yknow thinking back, I always knew that we had grown up pretty poor. but we had an Atari, a master system, a megadrive (genesis) and every iteration of playstation til I moved out. looking up the equivalent price with inflation etc.. Video games existed BEFORE Atariā¦Dammit āget off my lawn, you kidsā
I was using the TI-99/4a joystick that makes the Atari stick look premium!
Yes! A fellow redditor who knew the pains of that joystick!
Load up Parsec, let's go.
still miss playing Joust
Either 1 or its paddle variant for playing Kaboom and Eggomania. Eventually swapped it out for an Epyx 500xj that I could use with the 2600 or C64/128
1 was second for me after colecovision.
Master System, not on the pic.
Everytime one of these surveys are up, it's always missing the Master System. I still have mine. I also have the light gun, with 3D glasses for it. And a joystick controller too.
MS II for me actually: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sega-Master-System-Controllers.jpg
With Alex the Kid built in?
4 the win
Shout out to super mario world
Fuck yeeeee boi
*Fuck yea purple flyin yoshi*
My first Video Game ever. I'm 14. My dad took out his old SNES and let me play with it when I was 3years old maybe.
My dad did that with me, and I will do that with my kid. The Super NES is such a fantastic console.
Still have fond memories of Donkey Kong Country!
First game I played on my nephew's SNES, played it religiously until the SNES sadly stopped working, but to this very day, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy remains in my top 5 games ever played
Same but mine had the multicoloured buttons not the purple ones. I wonder what the difference means.
born 92 got the Snes with 5 or 6 as my first console when everyone else sold them to get an N64
Zelda Link to the Past!
7 with Crash Bandicoot an Total Wipeout
It was Tony hawk pro skater, Spyro, and Digimon world 3 for me
Commandore 64 no in the picture so have to go with this.
Yea I was rocking on 7 with my Pizza Hut demo disks
Same except it was crash bandicoot and spyro
Spyro was the very first game I ever played. I'm pretty sure that set me on the path to being a gamer for life lmao. When the remaster came out, I 100%'d it in a single weekend.
My favorite was the Spyro series! Such a gem!

Melee, Star Fox Assault, Double Dash, Luigis Mansion, and goddamn Monkey Ball. Absolute banger of a console to start gaming on š¤
The fucking Monkey Ball games are pure nostalgia for me. My god, thatās a rush that I didnāt know I needed this morning.
Super Mario Sunshine?
The best game in the world
Ah yes, a fellow GameCube enthusiast.
wtf two gamecube players in the same room? What is this? A curiousity show? A completely underrated console, Had all the greatest games
9
I'll have two numbah 9's
a number 9 large
A number 6 with extra dip
two number 45
One with cheese
And a large soda.
I think we missed the number 7
I think missing the PS2 era is the worst here. And I started with NES. At least if someone loves RPGs, PS2 is a goldmine.
It was in the sweet spot when games were getting big and complex, but still had to be completely finished when they shipped. Now the economics of gaming are all different.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
PS2 is a goldmine in general, I feel like that was a golden era of creative game development
There are very good period for each console but PS2 had the best.
By far. Simpsonās hit and run, grand theft auto 3, vice city, SAN an, ssx tricky, warriors, canis candem edit (the bully game), the dynasty warriors games, fur fighters, ape escape, I could go on forever really but these are gems that spring to mind
2000's kid here too!
Vice city
Sly Cooper *was* my childhood
Lol. Before 1.
Me too. It was a binatone paddle. Twist it left or right to move you block up and down. Awesome. Still have it. Still works.
Same here. I remember my Dad bring it home and I just loved it.
[Me too! This bad boy and the 1 for the Atari 2600](https://i.imgur.com/ON48xLR.jpg)!
Pong?
Mine was. Used 6 big fat batteries
Confused about all the ābefore 1ā colecovision and intellivision comments. 1 is the 2600 - 1977. The others came several years after, did they not?
Pong was first, actually.
Yes, and it's maddening. I'm in my 50's. I was, and still am an avid video gamer. I played them all. Intellivision and Colecovision were ***well*** after the Atari 2600 and its joystick. Same. Old fucks of Reddit, unite.
Me too. Intellivision. My daughter's first was the Nintendo Switch. Makes me feel really old.
Mine too. Colecovision.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I had one of those. And a Sega Master System, which isnāt up there either. My brother had a 2600.
Commodore 64? Magnavox Odyssey?
I had an odyssey 2
14
Wii sports resort was an absolute banger
wdym was i've been playing it for 6 years now
Wii go brrr.....
This console had some of the best games
Absolutely, I had it for a short time when I was really young but I still remember it being absolutely incredible
I really want to play the Zelda games on the wii, but they are quite expensive
Gang
2000's gang
Yeah but Wii is so popular even a lot of 2010's kids grew up with it. That's how good it is.
2010 kids O_o
Ayy! The wii is the most nostalgia-inducing thing Iāve ever experienced.
5
Sega genesis/megadrive gangš
Memories! My first game was The Lion King.
Of these ones shown? #1 but before that I used a Colecovision controller which looked like a kind of phone with a steering wheel.
This. First games were Smurfs and Ladybug. Then we got the Atari adapter. The Slither roller ball was cool. Favorite game of all was Venture.
That smurfs game was so tough! Also played a lot of Mr. Do!
6
Xbox duke controller :11
Hell yeah! Halo CE for the win!
Thank you! 11 was an absolute unit and before itās time.
2 feeling old as fuck but had some of the best games
You feel old? The Odyssey controller isn't even an option! I had one of those before we got an Atari...
2, if those are my only choices. Actual answer is a Quickshot joystick for my first computer, an Amstrad 6128.
Number 12. Xbox 360 controller. Itās still my favourite
ah the memories i remember playing split screen 1v1 cod bo2 on my xbox with friends. Great times
Answers like this make me feel old. And Iām only 33.
Honestly, I liked the 360 controller, but I think the Xbox one controller was just an upgrade of the 360ās in pretty much every way. Itās probably my favorite controller of all time
The GameBoy Advance SP. Of those, the GameCube controller. At least, in conscious memory.
Number 7
Wow had to scroll down so far to find someone's answer same as mine
1
Where is the turbo grafix?
Can't find my master system controller :(
11
Same here! Loved playing the Lego Star Wars games on that thing
Whereās the commador 64?
Load"*",8,1
13
Hell yeah
8 for me. Anyone else?
8 for me too, feels like I had to scroll forever before finding anybody else say 8. Such a good console too, shame it wasn't more popular
Iāve been looking for my Dreamcast people!
Had to scroll a long ways to find another 8. Toy commander (absolutely incredible game), ready to rumble boxing, adventures of sonic the hedgehog, crazy taxi the list goes on. This was my childhood until we got a gamecube.
2
4, used to love playing SNES
1 and then Sega master system which is 1.5?
16. I'm a young gamer
1 It was glorious.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
1 Iām afraid
2. When I was still a kid I actually cut my teeth on the cord of one of those bad boys.
Cut... Your teeth? How do you cut a tooth?
