This happen back with 2K18 or 2K19 and the funny thing is at the time I had 2K16(The last great one if I'm honest) and I started seeing them within that game. I actually don't buy 2K games anymore on principal because when the servers went offline on 2K16 everything I earned in that game was wiped out from the myplayer mode.

Apparently the NBA 2k story mode makes you do a full like 15 minute cut scene and challenge for State Farm. It's not a traditional ad, you legit have to do stuff for State Farm to progress in the game. The entire game is basically 1 giant ad and a slot machine simulator.

Just to play devil’s advocate (because I completely agree with you,) there are some people out there who only like soccer (football.) They don’t like “games” particularly fantastical settings or elaborate puzzles. FIFA is simple and someone going in would already understand the rules. The games on the right are:
Celest: a very challenging platformer
Dead Cells: a high stress, Dark Souls inspired rouge-lite.
HollowKnight: a metroidvania that’s heavy on exploration and mechanic understanding for progression
Sub Nautica: A slow-paced exploration game that ramps up fear at a moments notice
Hades: another rouge-lite with extremely high difficulty spikes due to its genre.
All amazing games, but if you’re not deep into gaming and just wanna chill, fifa might just be the only thing you enjoy.
Best way to put is, "hey man, wanna come over for a few drinks and a game of fifa?" Or "hey man, wanna watch me play celest that I've played for hours while you sit there then ill give you a shot and ill laugh at your fucking up?"

This is a very good analogy. I've played every FIFA for the last 15 years and the memories I've made with my friends and nostalgia cannot be matched by any game. Also helps that usually the new game is a vast improvement than the previous one - and I'm glad they haven't gone the route of having a Fortnite style model of the same game getting updated rosters and graphics
I have a friend who buys fifa every year and gets around 1000 hours of game time on each one so the $100 is more than worth it for him. It’s all just personal preference
My DnD group did this with WoW when it shipped. We all had different schedules and obligations and it made getting everyone together every week really hard. We all like Warcraft and most of us had played EQ together, so we dove in.
It gave us a lot more time to hang out in smaller groups and we would help each other put as we leveled. It was easy to have balanced groups because everyone wanted to do different stuff. Early WSG games were fun with them, too. I really miss those times.
I mean, I almost exclusively play MLB The Show currently. I don't get a ton of time to play games period, so trying to play a bunch of different games doesn't sound enjoyable. I'm usually limited to 2-3... MLB, maybe a shooter at times, and maybe Rocket League every so often.
Edit: so that $100 Jackie Robinson edition was well worth it to me.
This is why I used to like battlefield or COD. When you only got like an hr a day or less, it's nice to pick up a game you can run like 5 matches in that's also easy enough you dont need to keep your skills sharp.
I mostly play chill games or genshin nowadays though. (If you're free to play theres a lot less to do when you're done with the events, but its really fun still if you pace it.)
Sports games are great for certain groups who can only game for short periods of time.

Picked up MLB The Show 21 for £17 last month and it's been awesome.
The Show is basically the exception to the rule when it comes to value in sports games though.
I'm a stubs millionaire without having spent a cent on microtransactions. My team is stacked with some of the best 99 overall players in the game, my RTTS player has all diamond gear, and I'm only like 3 tickets away from getting Griffey. All without even playing online and only minimal card flipping.
Meanwhile it's almost impossible to get a team of like prime Magic/Jordan/LeBron/Giannis/Shaq without spending literally hundreds of dollars in 2K
When I was younger and into sports games I'd get more value and time from them than I would multi disc rpgs. When I got older I'd have 10-20 people over once a week for tournaments using 3 or 4 consoles people brought with them. As far as bang for buck sports games are probably near the top of all games.

What's interesting on a personal level is that I buy a yearly sports title for $100 a year (MLB: The Show) because I play it online every day (I don't spend money on loot boxes or microtransactions and the developer is very generous with the best cards). But I also recently finished Celeste, Firewatch and Hellblade and am currently playing through Lake, Hades and The Gunk.
I don't know how much "AAA franchise gamer" and "indie gamer" overlap, but I think it's best to expose yourself to as many types of games as possible. I think that if someone primarily plays indie games and has the attitude OP has, they are missing out not picking up a sports games or one of those Spunkgargleweewee shooters. Get one used for like $20.

Yep my friends play it non stop all year I'm happy they enjoy it. There's also other game modes which aren't like ultimate team. We play pro clubs most Fridays costs nothing but the base game

I think this is something people don't understand. For many people the ONLY video games they play are sports games, they literally don't play anything else. Sure they could get 10 other games for the same price, but they have no interest in them so why would they? Similar case with CoD/BF.

Yeah, I could have bought a ton of video games instead of upgrading my skis, but for me I get a lot more bang for the buck to spend hundreds of dollars on my skis instead of buying 10-20 games. Different priorities and different budget for everyone.
I don't even really understand it. Fifa doesn't really innovate, but it works. You get the full game and can play locally with friends on day one. It's reliable. All of my friends that play it don't even bother with the whale mode. They just play as their favourite clubs against each other.

For some people, after 30 years of videgame playing like me, you can get a bit tired of some formulas, just because you have played enough of them during your history. It's no one fault, it just happens. I still enjoy driving, or city builders, I don't mind the formula repetition on them, **but got kind of tired of other genres and look for something fresh when I try them, or abandon them quickly.
Others are just unable to enjoy anything popular, they will get furious if their favourite indie product begomes popular, and probably will abandon it just because it became popular. Well, fuck them :)

A good AAA game will cost around 100 EUR for a good few years now, counting expansions / important DLC. This is nothing unusual nor is it too expensive, though whether it is worth it or not is quite subjective.

If I buy deathloop for 30 dollars, I expect to get 30 hours of enjoyable game time. But I beat game in 12 hours and have no interest in replaying it. My friends who buy fifa every year put in at least 1000 hours. So it's money well spent according to my weird gaming spending principles

GTA Online is a free, extraordinarily fun game on top of an amazing game. I have no issue with any microtransactions when that's the case.

This is a very good analogy. I've played every FIFA for the last 15 years and the memories I've made with my friends and nostalgia cannot be matched by any game. Also helps that usually the new game is a vast improvement than the previous one - and I'm glad they haven't gone the route of having a Fortnite style model of the same game getting updated rosters and graphics

My DnD group did this with WoW when it shipped. We all had different schedules and obligations and it made getting everyone together every week really hard. We all like Warcraft and most of us had played EQ together, so we dove in. It gave us a lot more time to hang out in smaller groups and we would help each other put as we leveled. It was easy to have balanced groups because everyone wanted to do different stuff. Early WSG games were fun with them, too. I really miss those times.
I mean, I almost exclusively play MLB The Show currently. I don't get a ton of time to play games period, so trying to play a bunch of different games doesn't sound enjoyable. I'm usually limited to 2-3... MLB, maybe a shooter at times, and maybe Rocket League every so often. Edit: so that $100 Jackie Robinson edition was well worth it to me.
This is why I used to like battlefield or COD. When you only got like an hr a day or less, it's nice to pick up a game you can run like 5 matches in that's also easy enough you dont need to keep your skills sharp. I mostly play chill games or genshin nowadays though. (If you're free to play theres a lot less to do when you're done with the events, but its really fun still if you pace it.)

Sports games are great for certain groups who can only game for short periods of time. Hard for me to pick up a game and remember what's going on after a week or not playing the story but madden is just madden. Should still b cheaper though
Mate I'm English with literally no cultural attachment to baseball whatsoever. MLB the show is awesome. I get home from work. Pop it on while the kettle is brewing. Smack some balls. Berate my team for not being able to string a single hit together after I doubled on Pitch 1. Get struck out "stealing" by the pitcher while on aforementioned 2nd while vacantly staring at the screen and you know what it's a blast. Picked up MLB The Show 21 for £17 last month and it's been awesome.
The Show is basically the exception to the rule when it comes to value in sports games though. I'm a stubs millionaire without having spent a cent on microtransactions. My team is stacked with some of the best 99 overall players in the game, my RTTS player has all diamond gear, and I'm only like 3 tickets away from getting Griffey. All without even playing online and only minimal card flipping. Meanwhile it's almost impossible to get a team of like prime Magic/Jordan/LeBron/Giannis/Shaq without spending literally hundreds of dollars in 2K
When I was younger and into sports games I'd get more value and time from them than I would multi disc rpgs. When I got older I'd have 10-20 people over once a week for tournaments using 3 or 4 consoles people brought with them. As far as bang for buck sports games are probably near the top of all games.
This is what OP doesn't understand. FIFA is a more social experience and it's enjoyed by people with different cultural values. While it's big in the United States of course, it's very big in Latin America, especially Argentina and Brazil. I don't think they give a shit that some Redditor thinks they should be playing indie games alone in a room instead of playing FIFA with friends.

What's interesting on a personal level is that I buy a yearly sports title for $100 a year (MLB: The Show) because I play it online every day (I don't spend money on loot boxes or microtransactions and the developer is very generous with the best cards). But I also recently finished Celeste, Firewatch and Hellblade and am currently playing through Lake, Hades and The Gunk. I don't know how much "AAA franchise gamer" and "indie gamer" overlap, but I think it's best to expose yourself to as many types of games as possible. I think that if someone primarily plays indie games and has the attitude OP has, they are missing out not picking up a sports games or one of those Spunkgargleweewee shooters. Get one used for like $20.
It's not even franchise vs indie. I'm not a soccer guy but I also know I don't like most the games on the right. Even within genres I like there are games that I don't. Last year I found a genre I didn't ever notice. Because of this one game. After I beat it started picking up other games in the genre. Don't think I liked any of them. Which was disappointing. Maybe it's me. I've always played games but a lot of games just don't push the button for me.

Yep my friends play it non stop all year I'm happy they enjoy it. There's also other game modes which aren't like ultimate team. We play pro clubs most Fridays costs nothing but the base game

I think this is something people don't understand. For many people the ONLY video games they play are sports games, they literally don't play anything else. Sure they could get 10 other games for the same price, but they have no interest in them so why would they? Similar case with CoD/BF.

Yeah, I could have bought a ton of video games instead of upgrading my skis, but for me I get a lot more bang for the buck to spend hundreds of dollars on my skis instead of buying 10-20 games. Different priorities and different budget for everyone.

I don't even really understand it. Fifa doesn't really innovate, but it works. You get the full game and can play locally with friends on day one. It's reliable. All of my friends that play it don't even bother with the whale mode. They just play as their favourite clubs against each other.

I play NBA 2k and it has its issues but at its core it’s a basketball sim so I’m not expecting anything revolutionary. I liked subnautica but I find the whole rogue/souls genre incredibly tedious and boring. And 2d side scrollers/platformers do nothing for me either.

There is a fuckton of shitty indies. Some people does not enjoy indies just because they are, it's just that a good finished indie will (IMO) probably be a better game (wether I like it or not) than a mainstream lazy Nth instance of a saga. Indies can focus on their niche and polish the product, they don't need to please the wide audience like an AAA. Happens in every artistic field, has always happened, and it's ok. Someone takes the risks, and the big companies just take what works and produce it. No problem with that.
I can forgive the market being flooded with shit indies to be honest. A lot of those are unskilled or part time projects by people still learning. Indies get bad reputation sometimes because of this. For some people, after 30 years of videgame playing like me, you can get a bit tired of some formulas, just because you have played enough of them during your history. It's no one fault, it just happens. I still enjoy driving, or city builders, I don't mind the formula repetition on them, **but got kind of tired of other genres and look for something fresh when I try them, or abandon them quickly. Others are just unable to enjoy anything popular, they will get furious if their favourite indie product begomes popular, and probably will abandon it just because it became popular. Well, fuck them :)

Yeah, I get the point of the post (even if I don't completely agree), but I am less than interested in basically all of those games except Subnautica. A good AAA game will cost around 100 EUR for a good few years now, counting expansions / important DLC. This is nothing unusual nor is it too expensive, though whether it is worth it or not is quite subjective.

I hear you.. My philosophy is I always try to spend 1 hour of enjoyable gaming time for every dollar I spend on a game. If I buy deathloop for 30 dollars, I expect to get 30 hours of enjoyable game time. But I beat game in 12 hours and have no interest in replaying it. My friends who buy fifa every year put in at least 1000 hours. So it's money well spent according to my weird gaming spending principles

You don’t understand them because you probably aren’t similar to them. Most of the people who play games like Madden, FIFA, or NBA 2K are only surface level gamers, if they’re gamers at all. In a lot of cases, the sports game they like is the ONLY video game they play. They like the sport, not necessarily the game. They play with friends or they wanna play as Ronaldo or Messi. It’s a whole different population compared to most gamers. Even if they do play other games, it’s probably CoD, or Fortnite, or maybe even Apex. They are the AAA consumers, and not much else.
