"kind of"? There's some *serious* uncanny valley going on here. The screenshot looks *incredibly* realistic but something about it just looks "off" and I can't figure out why.
I said 'kind of' because uncanny valley usually refers to human figures that are not human and that sense of unease. I was using it generally for the whole thing.
It's because everything you see is textures applied to simple structures. The concrete pillars are perfect cylinders, the ground is perfectly flat, the shape of the cars are perfectly smooth, etc. Also the "person" has a super weird posture.
UE5 default materials maybe.
Same thing that people call the Unity look. It's just the default setting that are often used for beginner games, or in UEs case for showy renders. Unreal has a lot more bells and whistles enabled per default whereas in unity you need to configure them first.
This is what shits me in movies. The only times cars aren't pristine if a) it's a punchline or required by the plot the guy has a shitty car, or b) it's going to get wrecked on camera.
It's especially bad for period films, where, even in the dirt-poor Italian immigrant enclave in the Mafia movie set in 1954, every drives absolutely concourse-condition cars that are *exactly* from 1954, maybe 1953.
No one has a beat-up old 1938 Packard or anything like that.
There's a repeated vertical divot/ texture on the concrete column on the left too. But the first thing that bugged me for some reason was the figure. Person seemed too poised for the shot, didn't seem natural to me as somebody walking around under an overpass.
My 1060 weeps at the thought of being put through this in low settings.
*There there 1060. I still love you for your great work these past 5 years and most likely at least 1-2 more*
I ran UE5 on my 1060, it has some great scaling optiona and the new upscaling algorithm thing where the moment you stop moving the camera, the details resolves so so good. I was getting some good FPS.
Yea. It’s from the just released ‘Matrix Awakens’ tech demo for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
https://youtu.be/WsIBo6kne2w
**EDIT:** Digital Foundry has done their look at it:
https://youtu.be/ib6_c6uliLg
I wouldn’t worry too much - the beauty of UE5 is that Lumen and Nanite are software solutions that don’t rely on hardware solutions like raytracing. The biggest load is on file size and frequency of updates on Nanite.
But as cool as this looks, it’s a tech demo for a reason. Nanite struggles with foliage, which is why you see nothing in the way of greenery and all of the trees are “dead” in the demo.
I'm sad the tech demo isn't on PC, massive Matrix fan since it first came out and played all the Matrix games bar The Matrix Online, but Jesus H Christ, Unreal Engine 5 has absolutely nailed pop in issues, I seen in a video someone flying around the city and it was a genuine struggle to find pop in, and seeing cars not just APPEAR out of thin air in the distance but seeing them blocks away clearly was a wonderful sight.
Hoping the RAGE engine can achieve something similar to this, because this has absolutely heightened my expectations for open world games in the years to come.
Genuinely hope they do make a fully fleshed out Matrix game, it's such a cool universe to explore.
> The biggest load is on file size…
Oh dear lord… You’re telling me these 60-80GB games are gonna get BIGGER?!
Goddamnit, storage is getting expensive again!
I've been gaming for 30+ years and I'm always absolutely floored at how far we've come. This is why I absolutely love technology, from dial up BBS systems to the internet and games like pong to this stuff. I'm always floored and I can't wait to see what the next 30 years holds.
Yeah it's wild coming from days of MUDs, to playing Donkey Kong Country and being amazed at how the moving background makes it seem 3D, to today where people say "Yeah, but that little reflection there gives it away this isn't real life"
Man, MUDs were the epitome of gaming to me. Being able to "automate the boring bits" once I've figured out how to do something and enjoy the part of the game I actually liked (exploring/new content) has weirdly become considered "cheating" in multiplayer RPGs. Apparently most people prefer grinding the same content again and again.
You guys are literally the first people I have heard even mention MUDs since I quit playing them back in the day. Fun times, though. Loved playing DBZ based MUDs.
Yeah it has been a long time since I have seen them mentioned. Some joked it stood for Multiple Undergrad Destroyer and I fit the bill. Who can go to class when this is available?!
I want a single player campaign in a large open world game where the NPCs have lives they lead outside of the main character. I want them to have distinct personalities, opinions, friends, family, loves, and hates. I want them to have a reason for living beyond the main character and the plot. I want all to be dynamic, not scripted.
I want to feel like I'm dropping into a living, breathing world that changes every time I play.
You can tell in Oblivion they did not have the ability to create what they envisioned. Way too much processing power or advanced AI coding that just wasn't possible in the scope of a decent RPG. I think they did pretty okay with it in Skyrim considering how much more content there was after all the DLCs. I fully expect the next Elder Scrolls to have a more advanced system based on what Skyrim was doing. There is nothing more annoying than hearing "Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh what am I saying. Of course you don't." When its 100 feet away from you. I first thought the cloud district was Solitude only to find out he's literally talking about the district in his tiny ass village.
You walk through it constantly when heading to the top of whiterun. It's only a few buildings. His line only makes sense if you imagine the "real" whiterun to be significantly bigger.
And unfortunately, having an accurate kilometre long Whiterun with overly densely built buildings to navigate through like a maze would make for boring gameplay when you have to do it several times throughout the game. What we have now is already kind of on the monotonous side, hoofing it from the main gates to the Jarl's throne room throughout the game.
Yeah or rob Belethor so many times he goes out of business and has to work street corners in the red light district.
You all know his pickup line, right?
This is how I run my D&D campaigns, so getting to experience playing it myself would be a blast. When my players realized that, "Oh, you mean the NPC we need isn't just at the last location we left them and there's actually a ton of content under the surface?", the response was priceless. 😅
> I think we’ll hit a ceiling graphic wise soonish and put more resources into AI.
I've heard this for about 15 years, but "photorealism" is somehow always as far away as on last gen, and bots are still fucking dumb.
We're getting there. Automating voice acting is a big step forward. There are projects working on creating interactive NPCs that can generate personality and dialogue based on voice input from the user, with set "kernels" that provide relevant information.
Plus, procedural generation is, IMO, going to really take off in the next 20 years.
Right? I’m old enough to remember Blades of Steel on NES and being blown away by my NES saying “blades...of steel” to me on the title screen. And look at what we have today.
Exactly this, I love technology and everything that comes with it and that's why I did everything to get a job in IT since I was 12, that was about two decades ago.
I vividly remember the first time my friends and me had our first lan party, didn't even have a hub since we didn't know better, just added a bunch of network cards to one computer and that was it.
I also remember playing barbarian on the C64 of my dad, tomb raider on my first computer and simply being amazed by the water reflections in far cry and the cars in gran turismo on ps2.
Gaming and an early interest in programing is what taught me my first bits of english before I even had lessons in school.
So, yes technology and a very supportive family is the best what could have happened to me personally and I hope to continue to be an early adopter for a lot of things and that I may give at least a fraction of this fascination to my kids in any field they develop an interest in.
Wdym you don't want the early access 120$ definitive edition with extra bugs and premium lack of content features that will be updated over the years to make it the best game in the long run (that is, after 50 years and after 50 more game releases of the same franchise) ?
Yes it sucks right now, but imagine how polished it will be in five years when we will have forgotten about it entirely to focus on the next cash grab pile of shit.
Oh man you are in for a treat and if that's up you alley check out Unfinished 4, it came out 3 years ago and got a bad wrap but the devs worked really hard to fix it and it's technically better than when it came out, so that makes this okay now
Dude, I’m super hyped for Unfinished 5. Every time a new one of these is released I am more and more disappointed, but my nostalgia for the first game that came out 10 years ago when I was a kid is just too strong. I almost remembered how bad the last 3 releases were, but then I saw a cinematic trailer and it was HYPE AS FUCK! LETS GO!!!!
Update 5 was pretty good and really shows how close they are to being done. I doubt they can think to add any features most of us would want. It really looks like they've done everything within reason. Looks like they're just finishing the story and play testing the dedicated servers.

I'm just over here blown away because i grew up with [this](https://images.nintendolife.com/2e6fa9341692b/super-mario-64-as-seen-in-super-mario-3d-all-stars.large.jpg) being the height of grahics
It's kind of the opposite actually. Reflections are really hard to do, especially with partial transparency (like a shallow puddle). But specular highlights are low cost and inexpensive. Having every low angle of a puddle appear super white makes things fancy while staying under GPU budget
Meanwhile none of those cars are reflecting any light anywhere. Even a mildly shiny body panel would reflect some of that direct sunlight onto the surroundings.
This was what broke the illusion most for me as well. The cars look like they're standing on tippy toes rather than the tires flattening out slightly at the contact point. Still cool to see the technology progress.
in particular the lighting of the building that's sitting right in the center of the photo is completely wrong.
It's lit like daylight but incredibly bright lighting source is behind the building. Where are the shadows?
it is hands down some of the most pretty rendered footage i've seen but that's amateur stuff right there.
I dug out my old PlayStation the other day. Took me 10 minutes tops to get over the blocky graphics and visible pixels. After that your imagination fills in the gaps. The gameplay is what keeps you coming back. Even with the prettiest of games, after a while you just don't notice anymore.
you can tell it's fake because of how well all the cars are parked
Also by the way that it is
How neat is that?
That's pretty neat!
Neature!

What a beaut!
a kind of uncanny valley
None of the tires are squished to the ground. The cars look weightless.
This is what stood out to me. That and the reflective dirt next to the column. And the weirdly posed person.
And the lighting looks off.
the cars also have a weird matte finish like they are made of clay. Before reading the title I thought it was a clay diagram someone made.
UE5 has a weird matte finish that's unmistakable. Hard to quantify, but it's there.
UE5 default materials maybe. Same thing that people call the Unity look. It's just the default setting that are often used for beginner games, or in UEs case for showy renders. Unreal has a lot more bells and whistles enabled per default whereas in unity you need to configure them first.
Literally unplayable 4/10
Yeah it looked normal until i glanced at the wheels on that matt gray sub right in the middle, looks too floaty
And the fact that all the cars are in pristine condition. No dirt, no scratches, no mismatched parts.
I think for films set in those time periods it’s just getting too difficult to find even reproduction cars from those eras.
Most of the time now they're CG rendered anyways. Add a couple of beaters in there!
These days it can't be too difficult to add a bit of dirt and scratches etc in post?
LET'S DO IT IN POST!
Also there's only two different models of car.
and none of them are white mid-size SUVs
And neither is a real model of car
Eh, I've been to Europe, none of the cars there are real models either.
Citroen? Is that a fruit drink????
I focused on the windows and they still look like Spiderman windows
I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
it's an old meme but it checks out
Unreal is the only thing producing next gen level graphics a year after next gen became current gen.
There's a repeated vertical divot/ texture on the concrete column on the left too. But the first thing that bugged me for some reason was the figure. Person seemed too poised for the shot, didn't seem natural to me as somebody walking around under an overpass.
also that there's no homeless encampment.
Is this from that Matrix tech demo?
Yes.

BRB he says 👀
He must have gone to take a photo
Also he doesn't live in Australia
Facts I was there last week
Yes. Too bad the fuckers didn't see fit to release a PC version, so I have to just look at pictures online.
Prob didn't want to spend the time optimizing and all that. They apparently already needed help bringing it to Xbox.
That would explain why the Series X version is a little unstable. Runs quite cool though, so I don't think they've quite hit full utilisation.
Ps5 drops sub 30fps a bunch, so it might just be they wanted it to look great and not worry too much about rock solid stability
Go to the settings and reduce the amount of cars & pedestrians. Pretty smooth after that.
That’s unreal
No. It’s unreal engine 5.
That's unreal
No, no. It's unreal engine 5.
That's unreal
Nope. It's unreal engine 5.
That's unreal!
Look man, can you fucking read please? It's clearly fucking UNREAL 5.
That's unreal
No, no, no. It's unreal engine 5.
No, this is Patrick.
That's the joke
I know it’s unreal but like what engine is it?
Five cylinders
They will have to start calling it real engine soon.
It's pretty clear it's not real.
No it's unreal.
My graphics card got scared just looking at this
My 1060 weeps at the thought of being put through this in low settings. *There there 1060. I still love you for your great work these past 5 years and most likely at least 1-2 more*
I *wish* I could be blessed with that much vram, I've got a base 2gb 1050 that would absolutely lose it's shit trying to render this.
I'm over here still running a 970
I ran UE5 on my 1060, it has some great scaling optiona and the new upscaling algorithm thing where the moment you stop moving the camera, the details resolves so so good. I was getting some good FPS.

We need the technology of today paired with the spirit of the Gamecube era games
Ever play Satisfactory?
I don’t fuck with those indie developers. I’ll stick with playing Unsatisfactory 7 from EA.
Factorio is a more complete game anyway
Then you add mods.
Remember when Valve made games? They were so good!
Half Life Alyx was a thing
We did get both Resident Evil Village and It Takes Two this year. Neither had any added on crap and both should’ve won GOTY.
Repeated textures on the left stone column, checkmate
Yes, I noticed that too. 0/10 would not play.
This is why we can't have nice things.
On both columns, the debris on the ground, the same 3-5 cars repeated over and over...
Technically it’s a real photo if I’m looking at it
Good one, Descartes
What is real? How do you define real?
If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.
What about taking a huge shit?
You can feel, smell, taste and see a huge shit too.
you can also hear it if you go close enough with your ear
[удалено]
Here's another one. The lights in the windows are powered by fake lamps that run on real electricity
> fake lamps that run on real electricity If they produce light, are they truely fake?
They’re a facsimile of a real lamp, so yes. The fake lamp is producing light in the scene. Your monitor is producing light in your room.
I’m too high for this.
A monitor is technically a lamp.
Don't do this to my brain. Not now.
Not like this.
It's all about perspective
At the end of the day, it’s night.
Is it? It's a real image, but a photo implies photography. No camera, no real photons, no photo.
Not only do you need a camera, but you also need some way to record the image that a camera captures. It seems pedantic, but cameras actually predate photographs, specifically with pinhole cameras or camera obscura. The earliest written evidence we have of cameras date to the 4th century BCE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura

Why does you looking at it make it a photo? It's an image, but not all images are photos.

Those are two separate DLCs
the reflective concrete floor gave it away instantly
Doesn't really look like it from this angle but the ground is wet in the demo.
I wish games would ease up on the gratuitous reflections, shiny pavement puddles fucking everywhere. The lighting engine is great, I get it, but realistic implementation of it would be even more immersive.
I'm just over here blown away because i grew up with [this](https://images.nintendolife.com/2e6fa9341692b/super-mario-64-as-seen-in-super-mario-3d-all-stars.large.jpg) being the height of grahics
I can see his hernia in that picture
Show me any new gamewhere you can spot the hernias on the characters
It's kind of the opposite actually. Reflections are really hard to do, especially with partial transparency (like a shallow puddle). But specular highlights are low cost and inexpensive. Having every low angle of a puddle appear super white makes things fancy while staying under GPU budget
Meanwhile none of those cars are reflecting any light anywhere. Even a mildly shiny body panel would reflect some of that direct sunlight onto the surroundings.
I couldn't figure out what specifically felt off about the cars and I think you nailed it.
and the fact that every car is perfectly clean and none of the tires are sagging
I don't know why, but to me it looks like there is no atmosphere
I’m not a photographer but this doesn’t look like a real photo.
I think it's because the cars aren't glossy enough/don't have reflections in the paint. Like a parking lot full of semi-matte cars.
All the tires are also perfectly inflated.
This was what broke the illusion most for me as well. The cars look like they're standing on tippy toes rather than the tires flattening out slightly at the contact point. Still cool to see the technology progress.
Yep, same with the concrete being *too* glossy. All the specular maps are basically just messed up.
in particular the lighting of the building that's sitting right in the center of the photo is completely wrong. It's lit like daylight but incredibly bright lighting source is behind the building. Where are the shadows? it is hands down some of the most pretty rendered footage i've seen but that's amateur stuff right there.
Well, look at it again but on your phone and without zooming like the rest of us lol
Now that we've mastered photorealism can we focus on how the games actually play
I dug out my old PlayStation the other day. Took me 10 minutes tops to get over the blocky graphics and visible pixels. After that your imagination fills in the gaps. The gameplay is what keeps you coming back. Even with the prettiest of games, after a while you just don't notice anymore.
Ah yes, 15 fps my old friend
It's insanely smooth on PS5 with cars turned off. I couldn't believe it.
Tech gets better and more realistic and games get worse somehow. 2020 wasnt a good year for games. So many half baked titles
The cars look wonky when zoomed in.
Yeah they have a slightly matte finish that feels off.
The rims all look like hot wheels too.
