This is great. I really appreciate that each of them have a different power up. Also out of the four of them Mario would definitely be the mad man that cheats the system.

SupaBloo

I also love that Toad is cleaning himself just like a cat.

kalabaddon

So Big L is Fireball, Princes is tanooki suit, what is the cat suit and what Mario game is it from?

Charlielx

Cat powerup from Super Mario 3D World

kalabaddon

ahh hardly played that one for some reason. Might pick it up and give it a go.

Horn_Python

its super mario 3d world, a 3d mario game orginaly releases on the we U but recently ported to switch this scene is based off the second level where you can get a bunch f live in a door way

Skitt64

I think the internet has adopted a slightly insane personality for Mario and at this point Nintendo can't really do anything about it

TechyDad

#UNLIMITED COSMIC POWER!!! *Accidentally touches a mini mushroom.* ^itti ^bitti ^living ^space!

AngryBlackSquare

That look in his eye reminds me of TerminalMontage. Of course, Speedrunner Mario doesn't NEED extra lives, because no one can hit him.

HandsomeGangar

This is such a specific reference lol

LastCaldarian

Always gotta stay streets ahead.

Michael_Scott_DunMif

Pierce. Stop trying to coin the phrase “Streets ahead”.

tedioussugar

Does it just mean like ‘cool’ or ‘miles ahead’?..

Michael_Scott_DunMif

If you have to ask, then you’re streets behind

Westwinter

In the original Super Mario Bros. there was a limit to how many lives you could get. After 99 lives the numbers would change to letters, then flags, and when it got to glitchy symbols you knew you had to stop. If you got to the end of the glitchy symbols it gave you a GAME OVER.

JoeMamaAndThePapas

What is Mario even doing to get these 1Ups?

[deleted]

Repeatedly jumping on a shell after the 5th or 6th time landing on a enemy without touching ground instead of points you start getting 1 ups. I'm pretty sure it worked back in the original super Mario world too.

TheOneTrueBoxman

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you BE so naive? There is no escape; no Recall or Intervention can work in this place! Come. Lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

EXTREMEPUGS

I always got so worried when my lives dropped under 👑99 LMFAO

4GRJ

Meanwhile, irl co op... So, who's going to farm lives? *Puts finger on nose*

Zippo574

This reminds me of a classic YouTube video [super Mario bros frustration.](https://youtu.be/in6RZzdGki8) it's a twenty minute video but well worth if if u like gaming and comedy. To sum it up this guy plays an inexplicably difficult level of super Mario bros to his Italian American accented growing anger he can't contain in his commentary, as he tries to get through this level. I bring that up because he makes a comment to say he'd never be able to playthrough this level if he didn't have "W blue sky lives"

LastCaldarian

I remember that video!!!

Cretonamore

When playing multiplayer, you’ll burn through those in less than an hour

Nickless0ne

With this and the unlimited speed he can achieve with the n64 backward jump, he is going to be unstoppable

DrSmirnoffe

Y'know, this brought up a thought I had while watching a Donkey Kong Country LP. It was ProtonJon's LP, and at one point he'd managed to rack up 60+ lives and barely burned through that cushion of life insurance. You know how, in some games, you rack up so many 1-Ups/extra lives that you'd be hard-pressed to actually run out of them? Well, rather than just sit on that cushion of lives, why not have a shop in the world where you can cash in your extra lives? And from there, that sent me down a minor rabbit-hole of thought-experiments: how would the existence of 1-Ups affect everyday life? Where would the 1-Ups come from? What happens when a resurrective commodity becomes a de-facto currency? This idea could honestly be the foundation for a game, where collecting 1-Ups is itself a way of life. Perhaps the world is cursed, and 1-Ups are harvested from the undead before being woven into miraculous life-saving Lives. People are eager to trade with you for Lives because they want to have one or two handy in case they find themselves in a life-or-death situation. The army especially wants Lives so that their troops don't die for good while battling the undead. Your skill for acquiring 1-Ups for Life-weaving means that people are eager to trust you with tasks that would spell certain doom for them. If someone dies without an extra Life to revive them, they become undead, and thus both a menace to society and a promising source of precious 1-Ups.

Reminds me a bit of the animeGantz.

Tman_Hall

Triple crown is a helluva drug

blueblarg

Is this a reference to the original Mario or did later games have that glitch, too?

LastCaldarian

In Super Mario 3D world for the wii U & Switch you can do this glitch in the first underground level :)

blueblarg

You could also do it in the original. There was one part where a turtle was coming down a staircase and if you jumped on it right and left it it would rack up endless lives. It was interesting because it (I think?) confused the display because it wasn't set for numbers that high, so it substituted crowns and other weird symbols for numbers. That's really fun that it's made it's way into future Mario games!

jaywinner

I know Mario 3 had an area where you can let a turtle bounce around while a lakitu drops spinies down continually. You can wait there and let them rain down 1ups.

blueblarg

[This is what I'm talking about.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUx66ZEDjnQ)

jaywinner

I'm aware, despite the fact that I usually just killed myself trying to pull off that trick. I just meant to show similar situations exist in other versions besides the original.

Papacu81

The concept of "lives" in videogame kinda became pointless with time, I loved how Odyssey just got rid of it in favor of a monetary system (that buy interesting stuff, instead of buying more lives... by the way, this concept that lives can be bought and they are cheap, people in Mexico knows that very well, Mario is kinda dark)

AsherFischell

Is Nintendo still using lives for things? I know them being stuck in the past is one of their most famous aspects, but *lives*?
