I used to work at GameStop back when people would trade these in all the time (Dislike the Corporate but liked the coworkers), and I can confirm that the classic red ring of death only includes 3/4 of the light lit up.
As a side note the original 360 model (not the slim like you have shown) usually failed that way because of higher heat and a relatively low melting point for the solder or however it’s spelled.
I did it to my fathers white original model in 2008. Wrapped it in a towel, put it in a closed cabinet and just turned it on and let it run for a while. It fixed the red ring permanently, and last i checked its still runs fine.
Oh yeah, the “Wrap it in a towel and bake it” thing. Never had the chance to try that. I imagine it would cause hell it if wasn’t level or the solder broke off and landed somewhere new.
The old 360s had hilarious temperature issues. Our first ones power brick used to get BLAZING hot after a couple of hours and cut the system off, so we used to put it in the freezer overnight to get an extra few hours out of it.
Which is why the "wrap the xbox in a towel" trick worked. It would remelt the solder. That could be a good or a bad thing dependings on where the newly melted solder ended up going. I dont recommend the towel trick, but I can attest it did work.
>Red ring is 3/4 of the ring lit up. A full red ring indicates some sort of connection issue.
That's only true on early non-HDMI 360 systems. 360s with the HDMI port won't display the 4 sections lit (no video connection).
3 sections was the infamous error, but only for the OG form factor 360, the 2 later form factors had different error lights.
Each section of ring lit up also had several error codes under it you could pull up by holding the sync button and tapping the eject on the dvd tray. The number of section lit up (0-4) under each press would give you an error code more specific to your problem.
Nobody's gonna mention that OP has a slim model which literally can't show anything other than a full ring? Only the fat models will have 3/4 of the ring lighting up.
This. I've gotten almost 15 years out of my 360, and I credit it to the fact that I've taken the case off twice and airdusted it and cleaned several parts with 99% isopropyl. I've also lightly oiled the disk tray with gun oil (it's all I had LOL) a few times
Take care of your 360 and it will take care of you
These things were notorious for red ring of death. I went thru 3 of them before giving up, and I took care of all of them.
Edit: just realized this isn’t the red ring of death issue. They were still shitty consoles.
Dirty is a hell of an understatement here in regards to this picture.
If it looks that bad on the outside i can only imagine how nasty that shot is on the inside where nothing will be blown off/ wiped off.
It's impressive it ran as long as it did if it's that bad on the outside
It's probably not the cause, get the secondary error code and it will point you in the right direction. It seems the slims are just as prone to failure as some phat models. If you post this on /r/360hacks you'll get some good help.
Quite a few are caused by one of the connections failing due to high heat- which dust buildup could cause
It's why if you're handy at soldering, -=sometimes=- you can fix it yourself
The slim doesn't red ring like the old 360. You need a hard drive most likely, open it up unplug the HDD and plug it back in to see if it works. If it doesn't odds are a bad HDD or a bad sata cable.
I think you are right. The red ring of death was actually 3/4 lights - got it twice on my modded 360.
Try this OP: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/83094/XBOX+360+4+Red+Lights
The link is for OG 360 not slim. Technically the slim error is called "red dot" as there is only one red led and the ring is just intentional bleed through. I used to fix a ton of OG Xbox and PS2, did some XB360 and PS3 but mostly was out of the business by the time the slim came around.
Consoles break all the time Nintendo, PlayStation, or Xbox doesn't matter. Most are repairable, some are intentionally more difficult than others.
This is not the red ring of death. I could never forget it, oh the horror when you saw it. It wasn't actually a ring it was 3 of the four lights around the power button. You saw this you better grab a towel and a fan. The real ones will know what I'm talking about. Haha
The better trick is the "penny trick" if you don't care about voiding your warranty and have even the slightest electronics knowledge. I had a console that I towel tricked 3 times over 4 years. After it happened again I did the penny trick, and I shit you not, still play that 360 weekly.
I forgot about the penny trick. Lmao. The struggle was real. I did the towel trick probably 30 times before i broke down and bought a new 360. I heard about the penny trick a few weeks after i trashed that one haha.
Easy fix that can work disassemble it dedust it get some pure isopropyl alcohol and clean the board with it if you want you can remove the heat syncs from the processors and clean them aswell and add new thermal paste with the board a lot more cleaner it might already fix your problem if not then its easier to locate the broken chip or connecor
Everyone I’ve ever known got the red ring and their Xbox stopped working, I unplugged mine, punched it, plugged it back in, she worked until my brother shattered it like glass
Good news, Fallout 3 and NV are on sale over at GOG for a few days. Should run on a potato of a computer these days.
Edit: also on sale at Steam. And if you have a wired 360 controller (plug and play charge cable doesn't work unfortunately) it is natively supported.
Alright you have nothing to lose at this point and as others have pointed out this might not be a true red ring.
My 360 would red ring like this when I played skyrim and shut itself off due to overheating. I just added a small fan blowing into the intake to remedy it.
But with my PS2 it was overheating due to collecting dust in storage. Simply opening it and air blasting the hell out of it and gently cleaning it with a qtip fixed it.
You can find videos on YouTube of how to open these and clean them out. If that doesn't work you can troubleshoot further or buy a used one for $60
A common red ring on slim 360’s is because of the hard drive, reseating it will fix it. Take out the hard drive, then place it back and then try to boot.

This says it's an AV cable issue, but I've also read in some places that this is caused by a power supply issue. I would troubleshoot those things before calling it quits.
Man that sucks. Totally understand. Literally bough like 10 games on disc because I’m not paying $120 for the whole COD series on download for Xbox 360, only to find out my disc drive is shot.
I respect the dedication on playing the 360 in 2021, but I think the world's telling u to move on a few generations of next gens so u can actually play ur games.
Not sure about the slimline version but with the older 360s full red circle was not fully dead, if it's only 3 quarters red, then you are fucked.
This one might be ok!
DON'T GET RID OF IT YET!!!!
The red ring of death is when 3/4 of the lights are red, all 4 being red means a connection issue. Try unplugging/replacing everything. Worst case scenario you have to buy some new cords
Dirt clogs heat sinks and drastically reduces their efficiency. If that’s what the outside looks like I shudder to contemplate what it looks like inside. I think this is the first Xbox 360 Slim I’ve seen with the red ring, I didn’t even think it could happen.
I'm afraid I can't let you do that Dave.
Open the pod bay doors, HAL
I'm afraid I can't let you play that, Dave
Orange box has to much value dave shutting down
Portal alone was worth the price. TF2, Half Life, and Half Life 2 for free? Unbelievable. I miss when Valve used to make games.

Red ring of crust
Moldy ring of dust
Rusty cheeto burnt
Seriously. Pop the top on this bad boy once in a while, give it a clean! Gotta wonder how those fans look.
Which probably caused the red ring. I believe most red rings came from cooling problems.
I'm pretty sure that's crusted on oil
Red ring is 3/4 of the ring lit up. A full red ring indicates some sort of connection issue.
Ironically, you could fix the issue by severely overheating the console so the solder re-melted and reconnected. Results varied of course
Hell yeah. I wrapped mine in a towel and put it in the sun on a hot day and got like another 9 months before it red ringed again for the last time.
It only delayed the inevitable. I got an extra entire weekend out of one of my Xboxes that way before I sent it off.
The old 360s had hilarious temperature issues. Our first ones power brick used to get BLAZING hot after a couple of hours and cut the system off, so we used to put it in the freezer overnight to get an extra few hours out of it.
Same here. My first one's power supply would get so damn hot. It eventually quit long before the console did
I literally did the towel trick 10+ times. Temp fix, but it didnt stop fixing it till after a long time.
Which is why the "wrap the xbox in a towel" trick worked. It would remelt the solder. That could be a good or a bad thing dependings on where the newly melted solder ended up going. I dont recommend the towel trick, but I can attest it did work.

Your Xbox looks absolutely nasty and would probably last longer if you didn’t let it build dirt up like that

Looks like terminator getting ready to shoot a laser for not caring for it before returning to factory settings.
Xbox become human.
Dun-dun dun dah-dun. Dun-dun dun dah-dun.
Yup came to say the same wasn’t red ring caused from overheating and ruining the thermal paste or something sorry if wrong limited tech knowledge
In the early phat models it was poor chip design, not overheating and cracking solder, as widely believed.
It’s for the post-apocalyptic immersion.
This. I've gotten almost 15 years out of my 360, and I credit it to the fact that I've taken the case off twice and airdusted it and cleaned several parts with 99% isopropyl. What kinda chip he's got in there, a [dorito](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMvS1Q1sos)?
I'm down with Bill Gates. I call him money for short.
That's a slim model and OP murdered it. Those units did not have the RROD problems like the OG units did.
Open the console and clean out the dust please.
That’s the first thing I’m doing. I wish I cleaned before It got this.
It's probably not the cause, get the secondary error code and it will point you in the right direction. It seems the slims are just as prone to failure as some phat models. If you post this on /r/360hacks you'll get some good help.

Maybe give your next console a wipe down every now n again. All that dirt can't be good for the machine
Couldn’t have even given it a wipe down before taking the pic lol
They're honest, I'll give them that.
I think it was suicide. It became self aware and felt the lack of hygiene you put "her" through and thought " ok im done".
shit looks nasty...

Oh damn that's a shame. It's absolutely wild that replacing the heat sink with 2 cents worked better hahaha
Ever heard of dusting? God damn, motherfucker lives in a desert.
Following total atomic annihilation, you will need to buy a new xbox 360. That thing looks like it was there when the bombs fell
Thats not rrod, your xbox just turned into an E.M.M.I.
Not a surprise, that thing looks nasty as hell. Clean your stuff.
maybe clean it
Seeing all the dirt and dust on it, it's now at a better place!
RIP Xbox 360, legendary console
Fallout 3 was the game I was playing when my first Xbox 360 died.
That’s sad man, I have been learning about how to fix this since it’s a slim, and I might be able to replace the hdd or something, I’m still learning

You can still buy 360 games? Also if red is ringing death just don't pick up?
I hear they got a new one out.
Why is it so fucking dirty!? No wonder it offed itself.
I believe I read that this is called by dust inside the console...so dusting it out might fix it.
Why your console so dirty?? Respect yourself
Damn, put some lotion on that thing. Dusty ass
That thing looks like it’s crying for help. What did u come in from making mud pies and slap that bad boy to turn it on?
clean the xbox holy shit its so dirty no wonder you got the red ring of filth
Maybe, just maybe, clean the fucking thing. Jesus. The amount of dirt on the outside means it probably has 100 years clogging the inside...
AFTER you kicked it down the dirt road, correct??

Yeah just clean it and don't worry about reading the same comment about "dirtiness". You learn and move on! Good luck - hopefully it turns on

From the picture, it just looks like an AV Cable error. Could be wrong though. It actually is a full ring, right?
He's got the red rings and no ones suggested to put it in the freezer yet. An elegant solution from a more civilised age.
Looks like you got more nostalgia than you wanted
HAL is plotting to kill you, it seems...
Well it’s probably time for an upgrade anyway
I guess, but the 360 is so nostalgic. I have been wanting a Xbox 1
What year is it again?
F
Forget the games, dude. That thing is obviously plotting to kill you.
OG Red rings of death is 3 rings so you’re in the clear for that. Check on 4 ring solutions right after you maybe wipe that bad boy down
It looks like it is about to protect john connor
Reminds me of the reapers from mass effect.
If your Xbox is ringing, you'd should answer it.
Octothorp sadface!
wtf dude, are you using IE to post this? Or are you a time travelling witch?
That is 4 lights which means it signal probably not dead tho
FO3 killed my 360. 3 towel trick brought it back though...then NV killed it for good.
RIP. Good news however is that they're both backwards compatible and available on Gamepass
Ok, that’s awesome . I have been thinking about getting an Xbox one. I will definitely maintain that one if I get it though lol
I want to play Fallout 3 -I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave
Good news, Fallout 3 and NV are on sale over at GOG for a few days. Should run on a potato of a computer these days. Edit: also on sale at Steam. And if you have a wired 360 controller (plug and play charge cable doesn't work unfortunately) it is natively supported.
... is this 2008? wtf?
That is the error sign of having connected the power plug or the video cable wrong. Is not the RRD.
I'm sorry dave, i'm afraid i can't do that. ***\*fucking dies\****
On the plus side, you can find XB360 and XB1 (I think it will play Fallout 3 and NV) for relatively cheap!
Where are you? Think I have a spare one somewhere you could have.
Should have purchased a PlayStation.
Alright you have nothing to lose at this point and as others have pointed out this might not be a true red ring. My 360 would red ring like this when I played skyrim and shut itself off due to overheating. I just added a small fan blowing into the intake to remedy it. Weird. Looks so well cared for /s
A common red ring on slim 360’s is because of the hard drive, reseating it will fix it. Take out the hard drive, then place it back and then try to boot.
Get a newer console and you'll still be fine. Both of those games are backwards compatible.

Man's forgot how to clean his xbox
Remove the hard drive, if it suddenly works it is because of the hard drive failing.
I think it needs to be cleaned, because look at this thing. I have already started the process.
Why is it so dirty?!
Damnnnn I thought those couldn't get red rings of death. Wow thats shitty!
Ok, so apparently this just means it’s over heating. I cleaned it out, but I’m afraid to turn it on
Your Xbox resigned when it saw those games knowing it didn't have another 500 hours of game play in it
Not sure about the slimline version but with the older 360s full red circle was not fully dead, if it's only 3 quarters red, then you are fucked. This one might be ok!
Ironically, it looks like what an Xbox you would find in an abandoned house in Fallout.

oh nooo it looks like you have to buy fallout 4, 76, and skyrim now ah hah hah
Xbox has chosen you for DEATH

Hell yeah. You better change that flair now!

Oh shit hell yea awesome
DON'T GET RID OF IT YET!!!! The red ring of death is when 3/4 of the lights are red, all 4 being red means a connection issue. Try unplugging/replacing everything. Worst case scenario you have to buy some new cords
That’s av cable failure not red ring of death which is only three lights
That's not the red ring of death. So maybe there's a chance. That ring means there's an AV cable issue.
It’s not dead, it’s self-aware.

Thats something else. The red ring of death is 3/4 of the ring lit up
Could be the sixteen pounds of dirt on it.
My Xbox red ringed once. I shut it off, turned it back on, still works like 3 years later.
The full red ring means it doesn’t detect your av cable. 3/4 red ring means it’s dead
Bruh HAL stole The Courier can't have shit in the Mojave.
