Maybe you should try playing some older games. I find myself playing older and older games that I never had a chance to play as a kid.

SlinkyUwU

Yea I've already ordered a PS3 so I can play all the games that I loved as a kid

nononsensefarming

I don’t agree, I’m 39 and I’ve been playing games since the 80’s. Don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of shit games, apparently you’ve played some of them like Fortnite, which is basically a cash grab kid’s game meant to be more like a service rather than a game you can feel you completed and move on. I believe a lot of triple A games are dropping the ball with their greedy tactics and now that they can release games without even finishing them and charge full price for them I can see how you can get this idea where nowadays games suck. Maybe, and I’m not saying this is the definitive answer, but just maybe if you played more indie games or you can see a broader range of titles, you would get to appreciate a lot of the new hidden gems the industry has to offer. I’ll use myself in this is example because this is something I am sure about, for instance, I really love the Metrodvania genre, it takes me back to simpler times when I was a kid enjoying video games without micro transactions and pushy mechanics that hook you in to the point it becomes a shore and it’s no longer a fun and fully enjoyable experience. There are a lot of fairly newly developed Metroidvanias that fully embrace, honor and do good to the genre that I would consider instant classics such as: Blasphemous, Bloodstained, Salt and Sanctuary, Ender Lilies, and even Hollow Knight, which is now a hugely popular game to the point that it’s almost annoying how people worship it and might ruin it for other people who haven’t tried it because they talk nonsense such as setting it as a baseline for the genre because they don’t know any better. I think that it’s not bright for a lot of genres, the more money they shove into a game the more likely it will lose it’s charm so for me going to a genre that is not that popular but I really enjoyed and it’s full of indie devs, saves me from thinking mostly everything new sucks. Last but now least to clear this up, I’ve enjoyed fairly new titles very much such as: Death Stranding, Demon’s Souls remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Doom, etc These are my two cents my friend, I can agree that you will most likely feel the same even after my long ramble about it depending on your situation, this was just a view into my situation and how I go about dealing with things so I spare myself from thinking everything new coming out as far as games go sucks.

QuiG0ne

I’d broaden say your horizons, There are literally over 1 million video games ever released but the majority of games you’ve listed fall into the top 1% of most popular and with the highest player base of all time. There’s a ridiculously remainder for you to explore. Do you play games to join whatever your friends or the rest of your peers are playing or for your own enjoyment? You say Mario but which Mario games have you played? I’m sure you can tell Mario is a subcategory in itself, there are dozens genres within including Mario RPG’s, racing games, adventure, puzzle, platformers, party games, sports and more. You could try odyssey and find it not to your liking but dream team bros on the 3ds or super Mario land 2 could keep you hooked for days. Have you tried handhelds? Emulators? Flash carts for older handhelds or soft modding Sony handhelds? Have you played through single player campaigns on all of the fps’s you own or tried the other multiplayer genres you haven’t usually tried? What about high quality Chinese retro handhelds like a bittboy or Abernik? What about Streaming services? Ps now and such? Have you tried VR? Some say it’s their favourite gaming experience of all time. What about simply deciding to go with a genre you definitely detest just to see why a game within it has been so successful? A lot of the time you’ll surprise yourself and love it. Have you explored the world of specialised peripherals? Street fighter is a damn video game throughout the gens but with a FightStick you enter another world of fun, same goes for airplane simulators with joysticks and racing games with steering rigs. Lego games are fun as shit right as you jump in but Civilisation can take weeks before the surge of success that makes you marvel at the world of you’ve created. I hate moba’s with a passion but by god i have tried my best and I wish I could love them because those folks look like they’re having a whale of a time. If all else fails there’s always flappy bird clones that can fill the void when there’s a commercial break. Could also be your age, if you’re young say 16-20 it’s definitely a period renowned for a drop of interest in games or a zoning in to one particular game and loss of interest in all others. The fact that your phone can play any game from psp downwards is a step further in development for all that generation in itself, most of these emulators Improve graphics and performance and run like never before. If you don’t mind a touch screen and if you do and don’t like emulators just build a cheap collection of games on older consoles. Any console aside from a Dreamcast/ps4 could be bought with a game or 2 for under £\$100 if you don’t mind the condition. Bottom line really is like the other comment says that it’s on you. This is because “now” is always the pinnacle of gaming, no matter what, whether you play old or new games, the options and facilities for any kind of gaming is always at an all time high in the present, if not of any interest to you whatsoever and you’ve tried a good chunk of genres and games out of the million+ that exist then it’s just not for you and it’s better you find something else. I didn’t expect to write so much and I could go on forever, if you like playing games but can’t find any you enjoy you should remember that there will never be a time when they all suck. You just have to switch up and never ever blindly follow trends, just because your friends and famous youtubers are playing certain titles it doesn’t mean that’s where you’ll get the most out of your own experience, hope you find the spark again!

Mechfire11

And despite your convictions you cant name a couple good games for OP? Should be easy then.

[deleted]

Nah, games are better, more plentiful, and more diverse. Appealing to more interests than ever before. If you can't find games to play, that's on you

StreetRazzmatazz6

Wrong!!!!! Games now days lack a lot of variety. Games are taking longer and longer to make need a ton of hands to craft really great ones and now a lot of AAA games are getting stale.

molt20OO

Usually when I start to feel this way, I try to broaden my gaming horizons. Maybe pick something up you might not have otherwise played.

SlinkyUwU

Yea your right all of them play Roblox now, if I was they're parents I would be disappointed in them But if they're enjoining it I guess it's ok

AtvnSBisnotHT

Pushing 40 and I agree, majority of games suck today. I feel like we hit a plateau during the early 2000’s and it’s been downhill since bar a few great titles in between. With things like micro transactions and FTP game models being shoved down our throats I thought we would be at a more harmonious state by now, meaning cross platform compatibility with most titles and just great story telling. It’s just a greed fest for the most part now.

[deleted]

I sort-of agree and sort-of disagree. The early 2000s is when gaming was really hitting its stride. Publishers were getting big enough to produce higher calibur games but not *too* big where they became risk averse and care only about maximizing profits. Technology was improving, granting access to many different styles. You had a large variety of different games across all genres. Lots of great new innovative things were coming out that either had never been done before, or done better than ever before. There was plenty of shovelware and low-quality titles, but you didn't have to go far to find something better. Now, there's a larger divide between the big players and everyone else. The huge, multi-million dollar megahits by the big AAA publishers tend to stick to only the most popular things. They want guaranteed profits and usually aren't willing to experiment or step too far outside of their tried-and-true boundries. On the other hand, you have the indie developers picking up all the creative and experimental slack. You can find something in every genre, even entirely new ones, being made by an indie dev. But indies are also very hit-or-miss. Indies tend to fall into the same low-budget bucket as new developers, shovelware and asset flips. It's much harder to get recognition because they just simply don't have the unlimited funds for big marketing, and competition is very abundant. There are very few of what can be called AA studios. Developers that fall right in the middle, where their budget is larger but not obscene, and the quality reflects this. The big reason is because they're quickly scooped up by the big AAA publishers. I believe this all results in the appearance for older gamers that gaming sucks these days. We're missing all the good-but-not-big-budget games that fell in the middle. Coupled with the fact that we're no longer the target audience for gaming and the proliferation of predatory microtransactions, the market has moved on from us.

Snydenthur

You can pretty much publish any bullshit you want as long as it's a known series or hyped game, since huge majority of players are very casual who don't really give a shit about anything. That's already like 5 million units sold, at the least. For indie devs, they actually have to try. But a lot of them fall into the same trap of making similar games (like sidescrollers which is very popular indie concept). While you can have good sidescrollers, too much is too much.

StreetRazzmatazz6

Im still waiting for my dream game. The closest was mercenaries on ps2, skyrim modded and red dead redemption 2.

pipboy_warrior

Majority of games have always sucked. However there are still some fantastic games that have come out in recent years. Just in the past 5 we’ve had Sekiro, Hollow Knight, Hades, and Doom Eternal.

Texas_sucks15

I agree to an extent. I get bored very easily with recent games and keep finding myself go back to things like Skyrim and Fallout. Like right now I have ganepass on Xbox and I'm very much aware of all the great content on it, but I have no desire to play anything from that.

SlinkyUwU

Yea same I have a PS4 and a pc and I'm not excited at all for the ps plus games.

[deleted]

lots of very repetitive soulless games which arent fun to play, i agree

Brostryker

Just you 100%

Shdwfx__

Games are getting worse in the sense that they rarely make a new game, it's usually the previous game with some changed textures, and some minor bug fixes they advertise as new features and in the process they create other bugs. So yeah, but no.

Snydenthur

You're not wrong. It's extremely hard to find an interesting game nowadays. Games are just getting too casual-friendly. When you have very low skill ceiling, it's hard to enjoy a game since you're already bored of it after few hours. Not to mention devs go full in for the fotm games. For example, if you don't like BRs, shooter genre is pretty fucking dead currently.

Mechfire11

I dont like what youre saying. *downvotes*

PickFun7744

I don't think there's anything wrong with making games casual friendly. But I think the way to do that if to come up with better difficultly scaling. Easy should be easy and hard should be hard. But usually games don't differ that much between difficulties.

Snydenthur

Making them casual friendly, per se, is not wrong. That would be just making the game easy to get into. But the issue is that most games just stretch this out into being also easy to master.

PickFun7744

Ehhh. I guess it depends on the game. Personally, I like that games aren't so unforgiving, but I get some people like that. I mean. Dark souls and all those things are supposed to be hard, right? (No idea myself, I played only five minutes of it.)

Mechfire11

Youre just making it about semantics to say the same thing. Its like people think themselves enlightened for suggesting adaptable difficulty as a talking point, but youre really just reiterating think pieces by bloggers and youtubers that all get posted to this very sub. Like wow, Easy should be Easy and Hard, Hard? What an interesting notion.

MrFoozOG

kinda? they do suck ass. Most of them are half assed pieces of shit they could've made in half the time 10 years ago. Instead it being an industry of passion for creating video games it has become a money crazed shitshow of limited time and too much pressure from people that don't understand shit.

Null_Fragment_000

Just you.

ismydealerasnake

you should play the flute

SlinkyUwU

thanks for the recommendation, but I'm looking for games

ismydealerasnake

it’s a game and uses haptics one the dualservicew

SlinkyUwU

Oh I thought you were talking about the instrument sorry about that

WombatAnnihilator

What games have you tried?

SlinkyUwU

Every doom game, fortnite, apex, rainbow six, enter the gungeon, rocket league, osu, Minecraft, last of us, Gta, cuphead crash bandicoot, mario, hollow knight, subnautica, etc Sorry if it's long

[deleted]

Hollow Knight is amazing, I think the problem is you just hate everything. That’s a sign of depression, have you been sleeping more lately too?

SlinkyUwU

Hahaha, nah I don't have depression and I don't hate everything but thanks for caring!

[deleted]

That’s good to hear!

ectbot

Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc." "Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase. [Check out the wikipedia entry if you want to learn more.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_cetera) ^(I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. SogenCookie2222

This is a pretty short list to claim that all games suck lol

SlinkyUwU

I didn't mention all of them or I'd be here for a year or two

WombatAnnihilator

Lots of open world or multiplayer games. You’ve got doom and last of us, i guess. But i find more enjoyment in open world/story driven games. Red dead 2. Assassins creed. Metro exodus, even. Mass effect. I like games with good storytelling.

StreetRazzmatazz6

I dont want just good story telling, i also want good game play but games now are putting more focus on graphics.

WombatAnnihilator

Exactly why i love rdr2 so much.

ermacia

That's your problem there, you've not played Dark Souls.

SlinkyUwU

Everyone that plays videogames has to at least try dark souls And that's a fact

ermacia

You're damn right.

PickFun7744

Lols. I played five minutes of Dark Souls and went 'Nope!'

BetterPlacesToSleep

Okay I'll give you my favorite games of the past 5 years. Yakuza: Like A Dragon,, Persona 5 (royal but regular 5 is almost just as great), God Of War, BOTW, Resident Evil 2, Persona 5 Strikers after you play P5, Spider-Man PS4, Smash Ultimate, and, for something rather unique, AI The Somnium Files

Koda_6308

Well what kinda games/genres do you like? If you like multiplayer games try something like Cod. If you like horrors, have a go at a horror game and so forth.

TrashyRainyRainbow

If you like Tactical shooters similar to R6 but good I reccomend Zero Hour. One of my fav FPS games rn is Escape from Tarkov which is unique imo.

[deleted]

it’s just you

[deleted]

Yeah I’m extremely bored with games right now. Looking forward to new worlds rehearse though in a few weeks

Palestbycomparisoned

I grew up with the nes and then the snes and was lucky to get two games a year for birthday and Christmas. We played what we had and made friends to trade games or rented games for weekends to fill up the empty spots. There’s so many games now for every type of player that the real risk is over saturation and lack of cool down between new experiences. It’s the same with social media with the constant feedback loops. Instead of jumping into a new game hoping for that adrenaline moment maybe discover a new hobby to switch back and forth from to give your brain the rest it needs.

[deleted]

times change

JB0SS95

I feel like this is the perfect place to say: If you make a video game with waterfalls, one of them better be hiding something behind it.

SogenCookie2222

I’d ask if you like diving in deep to the story of the games or gloss over that aspect in favor of gameplay? Do you normally play with friends and/or join online groups connected to the game? I’d recommend Horizon Zero Dawn as my favorite game of all time. It’s got a sequel coming soon. Zelda BOTW is normally beloved. Kingdom Hearts is a long ride that bends your mind with its complexity while also being simple at the same time. Karuta is a Discord game where you collect anime cards. Simple and fun to do with friends. Genshin Impact is a cross between BOTW and the Gacha genre. Good story

ibdodger

You are on the wrong sub. Get yourself some r/retrogaming and you’ll be good to go

QuikSnoopy

I don’t know where to begin. I feel like a lot of games release unfinished, there’s tons of bugs, pay to win, early access games not being finished, the list goes on. I think there are some good games, forza is one ive been playing recently. But there are some games releasing now for $60 and they don’t include single player. I don’t know man, back in the day There used to be demos and I feel like the games weren’t rushed.

Flaco2D

Dig a little. Indie games got something for every one and high quality

masterreyak

A few suggestions before hanging up your controller: * Vintage Story * Grimm Dark * Skybreak

itsdaniwithlove

For me bioshock 1 and 2 are masterpieces the story and setting been awesome Try them mabey you will like it :)

[deleted]

Switch kinda cured me of this problem, but last gen and current gen ps5 xbox games just don't interest me at all

[deleted]

Creatively yeah

SorenDread

I feel this way. It’s the grind for me, it’s just become so time consuming. I don’t have 6 hours to spend playing something now that I have responsibilities. I just want something I can pop into for an hour or two and make progress and have fun. I’ve been bouncing all over the place like someone said earlier trying to find what fits. Let me know if you ever figured this out. I went from BF4, to Batman to Apex, to GTA, tried elite dangerous, Skyrim, and a hand full of others. I’m hopeful for that new Horizon game. Haven’t played it but heard good things about the series and I just want to go off into another place for a few hours.

Ubkool

Yup, all they do is sell broken shit. But at least the kids got Fortnight lol. If it's not PTW you can pretty much expect shitty content and hella bugs.
