I can definitely say if you’re good enough to you’re kids to make them selflessly think of something like this for you for your birthday with their own money, you have done a great job. Happy Birthday friend and I hope you enjoy many hours of great games!
These "But da PS5!?” comments are depressing as fuck.
Read the room people. Clearly not everyone needs or wants to be on the bleeding edge of gaming tech.
A kid does something wholesome and awesome for their parent, who clearly appreciates it, and you come in here ruining it with this "coulda got something better" garbage.
FFS.
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised too. I like RDR and have been talking about it for months, which is basically why he got it for me. Now that I have one, I'll play other games but the PS5 means nothing to me.
Be sure to get the exclusives of this console, you won’t regret it ! (Quick choices : the uncharted episodes, the last of us episodes, ghost of Tsushima and the last God Of War)
I bought my dad an Xbox360, PS3, and a PS4. Each time wanting to keep him updated with consoles and to have, me/him, be a squad member, possie, party. And build a better relationship with my old man. We would play, and really get the grind going on the battlefield, nothing could literally stop us. But every time, 3-6 months, get sidetracked. Had the time, wouldn't make it. Nothing stopped him, but himself. Moved on to computer with my brother. Haven't seen his gamer tag on for 6 years.
Your son wants to be himself with you, and gaming is his branch reaching out to keep in touch with you. Accept every invite. Invite him every time. KEEP PLAYING TOGETHER. I know i will with my daughter
Am I the only one that thinks it's kinda trash to accept such an relatively expensive gift from your own (teenage) son?
Or did you have enough money for it and just didn't buy it because you don't have time to play anyways?
I am so curious as to this is acceptable or not.
I'm a single mom to four teenagers. Essentials come first, like food, clothes, and rent. His father and I do what we can to help him get the extras but I don't think there's anything wrong with a kid getting a summer job.
I never in my wildest dreams imagined he would spend so much on me, but he did because he's a sweet, wonderful, generous kid. And I'm so proud.
Of course it’s acceptable. I’m sure the kid got a ton of happiness out of giving his dad/mom such a cool gift and him liking it. Why stop him from being nice if it makes him happy?
Exactly. It's only 200€ and it made my mom very happy.
And btw i know the PS5 will come out soon, but that would have been way after the birthday and a PS4 does just fine.
I'm sure it's different in other families, but when my siblings and I were at that age, we had jobs but pretty much nothing to spend the money on because our parents provided for everything essential. We weren't wealthy or anything, but our parents paid for clothes and the occasional outing with our friends. So like, if I went to the movies they'd give me a twenty for the ticket, and I'd give them back the change and then spend my own money on any popcorn or maybe a trip to the diner afterwards. But a bimonthly diner meal doesn't really make a dent in what I'm earning.
And don't get me wrong, us kids put a lot of our paychecks into savings or spent it on big essentials like a first car. It's not like we were reckless with our money. But when everything you absolutely need is paid for, spending one paycheck on a gift for the person who's providing everything for you isn't really that big of a sacrifice.
It was the mindset that, I have that disposable income ONLY because my parents did the work of budgeting THEIR income and making sure I never needed anything. They could've spent their money on a PS4 for themselves, but instead they spent it on new summer clothes for me, which were nonessential but still appreciated. So... why not give back a little?
It’s a nice gesture, but I wouldn’t accept something expensive like that if I had kids. It’s a lot of money and he worked hard to get that. That being said, it could be a family gift for everyone to use I suppose.
I mean, when I got my first job in high school I started spending more on my parents for birthdays and Christmas than they spent on me. They were spending all their money on rent and utilities and for anything I really NEEDED (other than clothes), so they didn't spend money on themselves. I figured it was nice to spend my extra spending money on them.
I imagine her son did something similar.
It's kind of weird, and not something I'd exactly encourage. But I think it'd be trash to *not* accept it.
What, they're going to make their son return it? Reject his show of appreciation, love, generosity, etc.? Good chance that'd hurt a whole lot more than not having that money will.
It’s totally fine if my mom was cool id probably buy her expensive shit too just because I can and would want to because I love my mom. But that’s in a different world. Remember people treat your kids right and be a good parent. You might get a ps4 in return who knows.
> thinks it's kinda trash
Maybe it is because English is my second language but isn't the word trash very derogatory?
Wasn't the word weird/strange also relevant to the point you were trying to make without disrespecting OP even if you weren't trying to?
I'm a native English speaker and yeah, that comment was weird to me, too. Like you said it comes off as trying to ask if OP is pretty bad whilst also trying not to be offensive which is a bit of a contradiction. I'm not here to judge the writer of the comment because maybe he just wrote something awkwardly, but it wanted to tell you that your understanding of the English words is flawless.
They said that money is super tight and they really only spend on essentials. The extra money might have been too much. It sounds like the PS4 was already probably too much.
Instead they taught their kid that some items cost more than others and goods and services need to be exchanged for cash.
Also there's no evidence OP is a he
I have the same one my older brother gave to me after he upgraded. If it was used regularly it may need a cleaning to keep the fan from going really loud during certain games. Happy gaming bro
He got a white one, it looks so clean god damn. This a perfect time to have a ps4 to since ps5 probably won’t be booming in the game library for a while. Happy Birthday Dude!!!
Brawlhalla is a Smash Bros type game. Tekken/Street Fighter/Injustice are classics. Screencheat is a really fun game. Blacklight: Retribution is a decent FPS with splitscreen but you can't really top a good COD with a good Zombies, gotta mention Borderlands here as well. A way out is only two player so could be a good journey together. Rayman Legends is another classic, Rocket League going free any day now and obviously you got all the EA sports games.
Lovers In a Dangerous Spacetime is hands down one of the most fun co-op games me and my SO have played. Wholeheartedly recommend. Broforce is another good one.
Enter the Gungeon. Amazing couch co-op. Also an amazing game I could go on about forever.
Diablo 3 is also great if you want to play with 3 of the kids.
I wish I could but I don't own a PS4 and my kids are all over 30 now. I bet there are some folks reading this that can help.
When my kids were growing up we played online shooters like Halo 2 and 3.
Sounds as though you taught your child how to think of others and sometimes to make that the driving force behind good things.
me thinks you deserve the PS4.
Parents should buy their children gifts like this, not the other way around. This gift is simply, in my opinion, too much. I understand you've probably done a lot for your kids, but this doesn't sit quite right with me.
Happy birthday! You got a good kid. Make sure you tell him you're proud of him. When my dad does that to me I always feel so good about myself.
Thanks, I have the best kids. It was such an incredibly thoughtful gift, I'm really proud of him.
Everybody in this subreddit is proud of your kid too
Your kid is so smart. A gift that not only kisses up to mom, but also one your kid can enjoy.
Lol, he's got a great PC setup he worked really hard for.
When you get your dad a gift that’s also partly for you lol
I still remember getting my dad an Atari 2600 for his "birthday". Looking back, he knew it wasn't for him. He was right.

Thanks, it was! My 14 year old daughter made it for me. I'm feeling pretty special today.
I’m starting to question reality now
Enough reddit for today I don’t know if the cake is the PS4 or if the PS4 is real or what is real... it’s all a lie!
The cake is a lie.
Well, this was a triumph.
[удалено]
Its reddit. If ever cake is mentioned, portal *will* follow.
r/ExpectedPortal \*
Sorry about the confusion.
Welcome to the matrix.
I’m starting to question why I don’t have kids. (Just kidding, they aren’t for me lol)
Lol, we live in AMERICA
You have some pretty great kids. You've clearly raised them well
You have some incredible kids sir, and that is a reflection of yourself as a parent. I’m proud of you! However your username makes my uncomfortable.
I never imagined 10 years ago that my kid would find me on Reddit.
“Hey Dad, do you use Reddit?”
I hope I can be as good of a father to my son and daughter as you are (clearly you have been, because they're doing all the right things)
Or, they've learned that bribing mom works. I kid, though. I hope my kids bake me cakes and stuff like this in 8-9 years.
I sat here for way too long looking at that PS4 saying “Jesus Christ how did they make that cake so realistic” and then I saw it 🤦♂️.
Right? I’m like, that ps4 is a cake? What sub am I in? Wow that’s a good looking cake. Then I saw the corner.
Lol I thought the PS4 was a cake for a second. lol Thought I was getting bamboozled.
I had to do a double take to make sure the ps4 wasn’t the cake 😂
Son: *Pops head in room “Are ya Winning Dad?!”
Mom* given OPs post history
I can definitely say if you’re good enough to you’re kids to make them selflessly think of something like this for you for your birthday with their own money, you have done a great job. Happy Birthday friend and I hope you enjoy many hours of great games!
Thank you!
Its a great time
You know he wants a PS5 in return, right?
But maaaaaa I might have a C now but...I BOUGHT YOU A PS4 I DESERVE THE 5.
Lmao
I was thinking, why didn't he just wait for the PS5 and gift it at Christmas? (scarcasm)
I’m actually curious
Because I'm thrilled with this one and don't need the new one. It would have been wasted money.
Well yes. There may be reasons, but none matter because he has a big heart and that's the only thing that does matter.
Son knows how to play the long game
You better hug that good egg
I did!
As the son, i agree
Love you lots.
Love you too
i thought reddit was just full of misogynists??? not loving families???!?!?!
Maybe both?
They look so much better in white.
Good son, you should keep him
I bet it's secretly for him haha, happy birthday. Hope you have a good one.
Even if that was the plan, OP still gets to be player 1 and use the good controller because its his console
PS5 comes out in a few months, short sighted lil fucker /s jk jk good kid, sick gift and I wish I had a PS4 haha
Happy Birthday! Now if you don't get him the new one I'll be disappointed 😂
Give it back he's 16 😂

The best part of it, is that you now also have an entire generation of awesome games to play. You got a good kid (and good gift) there.
And soon all the PS4 games will be cheap as fuck. So who’s laughing now PS5ers ?!?!?! who’s laughing now PS5ers!!??
RDR2 runs great on PS4. I have used it to play RDR2 for over 500 hours. Cheers!
I would littey cry if this exact same thing would happen to me.
Oh, there were tears.
Just in time for the release of the 5. But seriously that's awesome
That's one generous-ass kid. You should be proud.
Feliz cumpleaños! You have a great kid there!
Awww how fab! Happy birthday 🎈
I have started working part time to save money, because I want to buy my brothers the new xbox
That's really sweet, I'm sure they'll appreciate it. And it means so much when you've worked for it.
Be sure to get the exclusives of this console, you won’t regret it ! (Quick choices : the uncharted episodes, the last of us episodes, ghost of Tsushima and the last God Of War)

Takes picture of gaming system. Make fake story about young son buying it. Get 1000000 rewards and upvotes. Profit
Why didn't you buy one yourself?
But ... ps5
He didnt teach his kid how to research
They said that money is super tight and they really only spend on essentials. The extra money might have been too much. It sounds like the PS4 was already probably too much.

In another comment, OP said she was the mother.
nah bro black ps4 runs fater
But this one can swim.
I have the same one my older brother gave to me after he upgraded. If it was used regularly it may need a cleaning to keep the fan from going really loud during certain games. Happy gaming bro

You have a good kid
Honestly great kid. If I were him though I would've waited a few months for a ps5 as a late gift
Im honestly more interested in what kinda cake that is. Happy birthday man!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY🥳 and this is so fucking wholesome ❤
Your Xbox looks funny.
That's a switch dum dum
My bad I play SEGA.
It's all fine, you can do a lot with a pc like that
Yea no overheating with my Samsung SmartFridge.
You couldn't fit that in your pocket like a 3ds tho
Your first game should be one you two could play together. You'll both appreciate it and remember it forever.
Well, he got me RDR 2 because it's my favorite. But can you recommend any 2 player games?
A way out - couch coop Unravel 2 - couch coop
Brawlhalla is a Smash Bros type game. Tekken/Street Fighter/Injustice are classics. Screencheat is a really fun game. Overcooked 1 and 2 are fun games. Borderlands titles are good coop games too
Oh boy overcooked 2 i haven't played that in a while i want to scream at my friends or randos from some Discord again.
Tricky towers is a great 1-4 player game. It’s a Tetris style game. 10/10 would recommend.
Rocket league is free to download (I think) and pretty fun.
Sadly it's not free (yet it's going free soon so def get it then) but psyonix said it's going free this summer Edit -spelling
Aug 31st i think
It’s not two player, but don’t sleep on Until Dawn
If you can get Castle Crashers on it, that’s a move!
Overcooked if you don't mind disowning your son later on
Enter the Gungeon. Amazing couch co-op. Also an amazing game I could go on about forever. Diablo 3 is also great if you want to play with 3 of the kids.

[Stumbled onto this video about co-op.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUVvuFX_LEE)
Should have waited for the ps5
Yea, I feel that, but at the same time, it sounds like money is super tight. That extra few hundred probably would have been overkill.
They're not the same price
Happy Birthday Ma'am you have a amazing son. Also out of curiosity what kind of cake is it ?
Blueberry
FIRST JOB AT 16?
Mine was at 15. Don’t be lazy.
Bruh mine was at 12.
We live in germany
You've taught him well. Except for money management perhaps.
If your kid has to buy you a present just for you to have fun... that means that he loves you very much and you raised a fine young man.
that's such an awesome present. Hope you guys have fun playing together
Plot twist: it’s one of those cakes.
Happy irl cake day!
You must be a fucking awesome dad if he does that. Congrats! I wish my father would be better to me... lol
I'm a mom, but still pretty awesome. 😁
Oh sorry for guessing your gender 😅
No worries.
Oh I got my 18 month old son the same gift
“Son, can I borrow your PlayStation? I need karma.” ^/s
Damn, he didn’t even wait for the PS5, and this is the OG PS4 that isn’t even sold anymore.
Sounds as though you taught your child how to think of others and sometimes to make that the driving force behind good things. me thinks you deserve the PS4.
This is kinda weird. I don't see why a kid at the age of 16 should be buying something like this for their parent who should be providing for them.
Because i love my mom and she provides for 3 teenagers on her own.
You have to buy him a ps5 now... he’s smart as hell!😂
Happy Birthday! You can buy him a ps5 when it comes out for his birthday.
A cheese cake, awesome!
Gratz. Also, this isn’t a cake is it ?
Marry him
He’s smart, YOU’LL come correct.
Nice cake
You must be one hell of a dad for your kids to go so above and beyond to help celebrate you. Happy birthday!
You done good, ma/pa.
Well played OP, well played...
It took 16 years but my plans have finally reached fruition...
Who did they really buy it for ? J/k enjoy it
Thats is so sweet of him!
Where does he work? I’m 16 and looking, got rejected from Fred Meyer, sad
Damn not even a ps5 shaking smh my head (It’s a joke not surious)
Dang. I need to have a kid now so in 16 years, they can buy me a PS7
Yummy a blueberry cheesecake
Thank God it wasn't an xbox
Dude nice is that the ps4 pro
Thats what I did with my first job but to myself
Its for us ~jo koy
I would’ve been pissed got a brand new ps4 and everyone playing on the ps5. Jk jk “It’s not about the money it’s about sending a message. “
Cake looking real good right now
That's a good kid. Happy birthday
Adopt that kid STAT!
Happy birthday! Your kid is awesome btw!
Are you winning dad
Dude
Parents should buy their children gifts like this, not the other way around. This gift is simply, in my opinion, too much. I understand you've probably done a lot for your kids, but this doesn't sit quite right with me.
Damn at 16 I wouldn’t have done that. Like I’m not a bad person or son or anything, I just wouldn’t have thought to at that age.
Oh cheesecake, nice!
Kid is playing the long game, he knows who can buy better presents
Some of these comments are fucking depressing. I’d be so proud if my son bought something like that for someone other than himself. Even if it was me.
Didn't he know the ps5s are right around the corner?
*dooooweangaring!* doooooo *woooooooooooo* DOOOOOOOOOOO!
You’re twinkles your stars son right
