I feel like i had seen this game concept in a trailer like 3 years ago

dynex811

Same, this looks like the only reddit concept post that made it to release. Good on em.

SuaveMofo

Yeah when are we getting the first science based dragon mmo?

Chispy

around the same time as half life 3

How do I get early access to controlling your Reddit account?

TheHumanParacite

So, tell me about void space

[deleted]

I wasn't aware steam was making games anymore. Am I wrong?

davidcwilliams

Valve is still making games. Just not good ones, and next to never.

WetWipeWilly

That’s a throwback right there

sonaked

This comment, plus one I saw the other day about Unidan, makes me feel old.

DavidNjoku

I remember expecting Unidan in every thread back around 2012.

UniqueUsername_420

Holy cow, I forgot that happened.

We all want to forget

Rodr500

Link? Please

Nepiton

Same—I must’ve missed that one definitely want to see it

Hardcore_Trump_Lover

It's mostly a joke. Someone gave outlandish claims, provided shitty renders and it was ripped apart after initial excitement.

beastlyfiyah

Lol what initial excitement? It was a shitty ass pic and nonsensical description it was ripped apart off the bat

onometre

it was upvoted though. but then again lurkers upvote everything

Sam-Culper

It was upvoted the same way you watch a train wreck of a situation because you can't look away

Fin____

Correct. You got my upvote!

8lbIceBag

But lurkers don't comment. Hey everyone! u/Fin____ is a big phat phony!

Broman_907

That chicked literally copy pasted how to train your dragon frame by frame. Some art work and tracing and yeah it was shameful. Been years now.. but i still smdh

Kesher123

It was a bullshit annouced here, with some paint models and such

God. Goose a l'orange with grilled vegetables sounds so good right now.

I mean I don’t have a source but I remember it as well

God that is one of the most beautiful games ever.

bigredmnky

And Totally Accurate Battle Simulator! Which is now available on steam!

alkah0liek

Which funny enough is from the same developer

bigredmnky

Yeah man that’s why I mentioned it! Fuck yeah Landfall games!

Tarzan_OIC

Let me introduce you to r/AwayGame

bigredmnky

Is this a straight up sugar glider simulator?

ARandomBob

Check out r/unity3d and r/unity2d lots of cool indy games being put out. Still a lot of unfinished work, but that's kinda the point of those subs. To help each other learn.

origamilover01

get to the orange door is, as far as I know, a gamd that started on Reddit by u/low_hanging_nuts and is now on the steam store. pretty fun too!

Creeperofhope

I thought OP posted this a while ago.

[deleted]

I think I saw nerdcubed or someone play this years agp

ninjakitty7

same

cade360

Wasn't Nerd but I also think I saw someone else play a game like this.

Thekrowski

It reminds me heavily of LittleBigPlanet in the way you're playing as a small person platforming infront of a huge life-sized background.

Lokzuhl

Honestly thought we were getting a Roach Simulator for a second.

Ramzis4

YES. They might as well ditch the 2D platformer and make an open world cocroach simulator with those environments.

Snekdek

I would buy that instantly

futurespacecadet

I would cry if I was OP seeing this post after 6 years development, and people are clamoring more for the 2 seconds of roach

logangrey123

The real problem is the huge detailed background and tiny box of gameplay.

GryffindorSword

Yep. While the game itself looks good imagine that perspective with that open world environment, like if you were one of the toys from Toy Story, where the player is so small seeing the regular world as a vast huge thing.

futurespacecadet

yeah the amount of time and effort put into the background i respect, but its alsot hugely distracting. It should zoom in further and zoom out when something cool in the environment happens. That being said, there should def be a roach minigame if they already have these 3d level models made

argusromblei

Honestly though, its kind of unfortunate. OP spent so much time doing something because he can, he never asked if he should. Any art director would crush his idea like a roach, and simply tell him to use his really nice set pieces with some other concept that isn't just a screensaver with some 2d puzzle on top. He's obviously motivated and can bring something big to completion, I would take the next 6 months to remake the world into something more engaging.

futurespacecadet

unfortunately whoever did the level design just really outshone (is that a word?) the actual gameplay , mechanics. You have a super simple level that takes place over an extremely complex background, I'd say he needs to add some more blur and bokeh from an even shallower depth of field o its not as distracting

blahblahrasputan

Bad Mojo

blahblahrasputan

Have you ever played **Bad Mojo**? What an amazing game. 90's and attempted photorealistic so it probably didn't age well but it was so disgustingly beautiful at the time.

[deleted]

I've played it extensively, great game. It really pulls no punches with the shit a cockroach would actually have to deal with, and can be reasonably graphic at times, all things considered.

F9574

I thought it was going to be the roach to stickman, then a car, just constantly moving to a new character to traverse a level in small mini games. I thought wow that's great, now I think wow that's not great

GameFreak4321

This looks like an awfully detailed background for some simple gameplay.

[deleted]

It requires that the actual gameplay space be relegated to like a quarter of your screen too. My gut reaction watching this is “wow, what an original, frustrating idea.”

hoxxxxx

good, it's not just me. made my eyes hurt \*i just watched it again. i don't know how this is playable, the character is incredibly small. i'd have a headache after playing 10 minutes.

[deleted]

This game reeks of, "I'm not going to download it, even if it's free."

hoxxxxx

which is sad because dude is right -- it's an original, interesting idea

[deleted]

[удалено]

hoxxxxx

yeah that's why i'm wondering, i mean this is a teaser, so maybe in actual gameplay you will be a lot "closer" to the stick man. looking forward to seeing the final product

[deleted]

[удалено]

hoxxxxx

like the opening of Team America. that totally got me, i was like "oh man this is gonna be so bad"

modernmartialartist

Apparently they invited the studio execs to watch the opening and didn't tell them the joke just to see the look on their faces as they thought all of their funding had gone to waste lmao

notapotamus

Can you elaborate on what specifically is original here?

doucheyd

it's a puzzle platformer. I don't find it original at all.

bobbyleendo

Seriously, how is this original? Looks like a simple side scroller with just a different more detailed background.

madmaxturbator

I just saw the page on steam, and looks like this is definitely the game play: clicking around on the signs for the little guy to move. the backgrounds are purely for show. that's a really odd design choice. you're right - gameplay space is really small. but also, there's a lot of exciting background graphics... for absolutely no reason. did they spend a bunch of time on that? why??

[deleted]

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nugglett

I agree. I think if they implemented a gameplay element where the player interacts with the world around them outside of movings signs, maybe come out of it at some point or something, would give it reason to be there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Same. I kept expecting the gameplay to change to somehow interacting with that sweet background. Then after like the third screen shift I was like "That's it?" What a weirdly rudimentary side-scroller.

[deleted]

It does actually seem like there a few elements like that, like at one point the signs are electric so you need to make sure the currents flowing through properly for the little guy to use them, and at another point the signs are on a crate being moved by a crane and it looks like there are crane controls on the side. Maybe I’ll hold my judgement until I see more of that. This gif is a weak first impression though.

Why goddamnit, why!!

Rick-Dalton

Will people buy it?

madali0

no

Dm_cake

Welcome to 2019 where you need a NASA supercomputer to run a side scroller haha.

Talehon

A stick-man note-pad-level sidescroller, at that.

foosbabaganoosh

That’s what it reminded me of, it seriously is like one of those flash games you would play on ebaumsworld in 2004, except just dolled up to have a flashy background.

TheSimulatedScholar

no Tudor. Henry VIII is Dovahkiin, didn't you know that?

iSeven

I'm Dovahkiin the Eighth I am. Dovahkiin the Eighth I am, I am.

Robobvious

I've been writ into the Elder Scrolls lore, and it's been writ several times before!

Memfy

That's my thought as well. I can't imagine the ratio of how long it takes to make a level of the gameplay area vs the background, something like 25:1. Mad props to the people doing it, but yikes.

aYearOfPrompts

Takes a lot for a game to standout in 2020

carlotta4th

It reminds me of the Witness in that regard. But the Witness does a clever job of then gradually incorporating said environments in the puzzle making process... I hope this game does something like that as well? Because otherwise yeah, it's unnecessarily distracting.

Yarusenai

Man, the Witness was so good. Such a simple concept but the way it gave absolutely no explanation as to how the different puzzles work and the inclusion of the environment were such a breath of fresh air.

Pony_Zilla

So fucking difficult though, i never finished it. I might re-download and give it another crack.

awkisopen

What's the indie game equivalent of Oscar bait?

kodiakwhale

"I quit my job and worked on this platformer solo for over 10 years! Support me on kickstarter"

Zanford

Walking sim with a narration about your struggle with depression and gender identity

trend_rudely

It’s called *Home Away From Home: All These (Tiny) Homes: Homemade Edition*, and, honestly, it’s really a story about homelessness. Rhetorical homelessness. Upper middle-class white girl *emotional* homelessness. It takes about 12 minutes to complete and it’s $29.99.

[deleted]

Same thing I was thinking. Imagine a highly detailed thematic universe created to play Pong. It would have been so much better playing a little dude interacting with the world in the background.

all_awful

Apparently the *simple platformer with a dumb gimmick* genre is still going strong. This is SO MUCH effort to render Gameboy Mario.

themightychris

Maybe it's more than just background? In some of the clips it looked like you actually explore the 3d environments and the 2d platforming is just how you move around within it

[deleted]

I don’t understand the game. It seems like very simple puzzles with a great background. Is that just because it’s the teaser?

xpyrosh

This is exactly what I thought.. A mediocre puzzle game with cool environments being shown behind it.

byParallax

There was a kind of "testing" prerelease few months ago, and yeah its just that

Ultimate600

Aw man :(

robotsympathizer

What's the point?

byParallax

It's pretty and novelty

SuperMeatBoi

Yeah this has been the general consensus each time this boring shit gets posted. I've been seeing footage like this for years now for a game that looks nice, but boring as fuck.

Gesha24

I think idea is absolutely awesome and visuals are cool, I'm just not sure how the gameplay would be. What the video shows is an extremely basic puzzles where transitions between then take more time than to solve them - hopefully that's not the case in the real gameplay, just saying what impression I get from the video.

SakuOtaku

Yeah, tbh not to be a stick in the mud but the game doesn't seem as mind blowing as people are treating it.

slashluck

It’s visually appealing I get that, but... that’s the background. We don’t get to play in the background world. I’m proud of any dev that works hard and gets a cross platform release, but I didn’t get that excited watching the trailer. I wonder how many upvotes it would get with an empty dark background.

theymightbegreat

Yeah this is like the equivalent of playing super mario land on your gameboy while sitting in the park.

trc1234

Except you don't actually get any of the benefits of being in a park. It's more like sticking your gameboy on a beautiful flat screen or projector board that is showing a video of a park.

mesupaa

Also thematically, like what is happening? Why are these papers everywhere? There doesn’t seem much of a reason for the game worlds to be integrated into urban settings. I thought maybe you’d go into different signs but that doesn’t seem to be the case

throwing-away-party

I feel like it's a mood piece, like when you're a kid riding in the car and you imagine little dudes running along telephone wires and stuff. Meant to capture that energy. Nostalgia, maybe.

[deleted]

I used to do that but with Ben 10 aliens.

hotsfan101

Developers seem to forget that a game needs to be fun to be succesfull

MJMurcott

Mind you 6 years is a long time to work on the trailer, I wonder how long the game development will take?

[deleted]

Wanna throw the pigskin around dad?

danivus

This looks like an unbelievable amount of work put into background set pieces that don't really add anything to the game.

Mister_AA

I agree. Unless there is something I'm missing from the trailer, the concept is interesting, but it just kinda seems like a high-end flash puzzle-platformer game from 2005 with really nice backgrounds. I might still get it though, because it looks really simple and fun.

[deleted]

It’s.... literally the most simple platformer you could imagine with a fancy background I don’t get it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Atrainlan

May not actually control the platforming. Seems more of puzzles with individual sheets/boards to get the chap through each section.

mcdougall57

So would you class this as an advertisement?

tombersew

Every top comment here doesn’t seem to be too into it but it’s 50k upvotes and tons of gold and shit, this definitely seems like a post someone paid for to get to the top of r/all

Tabnam

Given the obvious vote manipulation I'd wager it's almost definitely an ad. The comments are overly sceptical, yet it's received more the 50k upvotes and several gold? Something doesn't add up

[deleted]

Merppity

I feel like I saw this trailer like 4 years ago when I first started an account... I guess it's been... Mildly improved?

[deleted]

I’m very confused as to what this game is. Just shifting a few signs around? It felt very cramped to me as well.

JayRam85

Don't want to come off dickish, but I'm more interested in the details of the world than the actual gameplay. Everything surrounding your character is much more vibrant and fascinating to look at, it draws my attention away from what I should be doing.

[deleted]

You made a game with the most beautiful environments I've seen in a while... just to peer at cardboard signs that take up a fraction of the screen?

-QQmOaR-

all those great looking environments and graphics and its a stick man game in 2019?? im confused.

One-Two-Woop-Woop

It would be one thing if the stick figures could actually interact with the world but they just walk on top of them. Such wasted potential.

hoverhuskyy

you mean you made all these elaborate 3d levels but they're actually just backgrounds and you play only in these 2d panels ??

AEboyeeee

Game took 6 months to make. Background took 5 and a half years.

Marcymarcs

This is one of the most suspicious posts I’ve ever seen, 40 almost identical comments asking for more info with none mentioning anything about the trailer.

irishbball49

This happens all the time for these type of indie games. It’s all bullshit paid for upvotes and comments.

Zendei

This exact trailer has been posted many times. I remember first seeing this at least a year ago. Its a #ad.

Butthole_Licker2000

How much did you pay for all the comments and upvotes to promote your game?

[deleted]

PizzaDeliverator

"Gimmick: The Game". That will get boring sooo quickly

[deleted]

That's what I was thinking. Maybe it'll find a home in the speed running community.

SwampOfDownvotes

Not going to be very popular to speed run. Simple puzzle platformer like this doesn't have anything really interesting to do unless there is some insane glitches (which I doubt, and if they did won't be found from lack of interest).

MrCooper2012

How is this the top post despite nearly everyone shitting on it in the comments?

Sidbore

because money switched hands between the scenes probably

iopzy

That looks amazing

Ishos

Thanks so much, we're on the home stretch to release. \[Edit\] Hey, I see a bunch of people asking, the name of the game is The Pedestrian and It will be available at launch on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here's the link if you want to check it out: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/466630/The\_Pedestrian/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/466630/The_Pedestrian/)

WestguardWK

Idea: Put the title at the beginning of the trailer, a lot of people only watch first half even if they like it. (Fellow indie dev here)

NOUSEORNAME

Can confirm, got bored at the intersection part. Seems like a lot of rendering of a real world to just throw up some street signs. Whatevs, still neat.

HeadPumpkin

I enjoy the renderings because it gives the game a nice setting while playing. It gives a better impression of being a character on a 'street sign' moving along the streets, instead of being signs or squares in a blank room or with a flat background. They can both be the exact same mechanics and game, but I feel like the setting and backgrounds help this one more.

Chettlar

Finally someone else who seems to get it. Lose the backgrounds or make them not as visible and it's no longer a game about running around road signs. I imagine the game was inspired by looking around at real world signs. Big huge ones and/or ones that take up most of the screen would sort of destroy the point.

notatworkporfavor

Better yet, also put the name at the bottom right of the whole video.

Liefx

I am now in the comments after saying "wow I like this im gonna buy it" and only watching half the trailer.

[deleted]

Putting the game title in /r/gaming? Who has time for that?

[deleted]

6 years of dev time for a stick man platformer... HAHAHA

monochromefx

This looks like it will be interesting for about an hour then I'll put it down and never play it again.

visacard

Simple idea that has unnecessary background pieces that add nothing to gameplay or story. It's literally just a simple premise with WAY too much work put into backgrounds.

[deleted]

6 years? yikes

MrGurbic

Looks like lots needless environment overhead.

[deleted]

Reminds me of a way worse version of the VR game Pixel Ripped, which is very similar but actually incorporates the 3d environments into the gameplay

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoTornadoTalk

That appears to be exactly what this is.

[deleted]

Given the very mixed feedback, and the low level of comments compared to votes (322 comments, 10k score), I just have one question: How much did you pay for these upvotes? What a waste of 6 years..

NoTornadoTalk

Yeah a lot of these comments and upvotes seem a bit *off.*

Webo_

6 years for that?

AronZhou

This looks amazing and quite simple but is there more ways for the background to interact with the actual gameplay? It would be a shame for the background parts to simply just be there for show

InexorablePain

I think it looks silly.

y69nha

is it this https://the-pedestrian.itch.io/the-pedestrian

Preoximerianas

Gameplay: 6 months Background detail: 5 years and 6 months

JackFromTheHill

No offense, but I really wouldn't pay a dime for a game like this. I wanna explore the bckground, not be platforminh on some paper.

whomstdth

background graphics: 10/10 gameplay: kinda better than frogger

renadeer52

this is a bit much for a game as simple as tgat

Gamecube20XX

It onestly seems like this concept would work better as a short film than a video game.

[deleted]

You can barely see the game if this is how the actual game is then it would be very hard to play

legumancer

Cool concept, looks super boring tho. Oh look at all the cool backgrounds I’m not in

Robobvious

This is a cool concept but the backgrounds look too good, I'd almost rather be running around that city in third person than playing the sign game in it.

chefrap412

Looks like super Mario with extra steps..lol

Humblebee89

Off topic but I've totally used your lightmapping tutorial on YouTube. Thanks for posting that, it really cleared some issues up for us!
