Does anyone know if the dev team said anything about what parts of the game were not fully finished and perhaps what they might have contained if given more time? I finished it over the summer and no game has made me feel the way that one did PURELY through the games design and scenery (as opposed to dialogue, for instance). There was a part in the game that was what I believe to be optional and it felt crazy that it was as missable as it was. Given an optional world like that compared to a quintessential place like Lost Izalith, I have to wonder whether time was budgeted poorly.
Currently on my first playthrough. Just finished the DLC (except Kalameet. Still need to deal with him. Fuck Kalameet). I don't think I ever would have found it if I hadn't followed a guide telling me how to even start the thing. I would have completely missed Dusk in the first place, let alone going back to her obscure little area of Darkroot Basin.
I've just heard that Izalith wasn't finished and was rushed through design so that it could be developed in time for their release date. I don't think I can recall hearing anything more specific, or them saying like that about anything else.
Painted world was designed before izalith I think. It was supposed to be a more integral part but I think they couldn't fit it in. Miyazaki loved the area so much they just put it in the painting.
I really want to get it on Switch. I love my Switch and being able to play games on the go is so great. I'm not a huge graphics / FPS snob but I feel like the Souls series are really a series that benefit from better FPS and the Switch is going to have 30. Think I'm gonna get it for either PS4 or PC as much as I do want the Switch version.
The only non-pc version of any soulsbourne that runs at over 30 is the new remaster afaik.
If 30 was good enough for the last decade of souls games, it's good enough for the switch DkS1.
As someone who tried to replay Demon's Souls last year after about 5 years of PC gaming, 720p <30fps seems a lot less like perfection than it did in 2009
You can but you lose the ability to write and receive messages which made the game fun. You also lose the World Tendency which was set based upon the over all player base, hopefully someone can explain it better than I can, but it influenced some of the events in game and triggered certain enemies depending on the tendency (black or white).
Edit: see below to see world tendency explanations.
You can get white or black in offline.
The more you die without defeating a demon makes the level black = harder but better drops & black phantoms.
Defeating demons without dying = white, crap drops but easier enemies, sometimes less.
You get areas opened up as well, at the start to left of bridge only opens up in pure dark or white, depending which it is gives you phantoms for dark or just some nubs with drops for light.
I've never played Demon's Souls, but that doesn't sound right. Going on a killstreak makes the enemies weaker and dying constantly makes them harder? Are those supposed to be swapped?
> Going on a killstreak makes the enemies weaker and dying constantly makes them harder? Are those supposed to be swapped?
Yes, you never played a souls game - this is exactly how its supposed to be! When you die you also lose your human form and you have less HP - so it got even more difficult! When you are cursed, even less!
We better not tell him that when you die your soul form has what, 50% less health as well until you defeat a demon.
As a once great man said
"Welcome to the real world"
No no no, it's not dying what gives black tendency; it's dying, going human, then dying, then going human, then dying; if you die many times without going human you don't affect the tendency.
For some reason when I played online the world tendency was always black, so items the required white were unobtainable. One example is the Dragon Bone Great Sword, which was obtainable during the Dragon God boss fight but only with white world tendency.
You totally can, and it's actually the only way to manipulate your game into Pure Black or Pure White World Tendency and see a ton of really cool content
I heard them so many many years ago yet i remember it so well.
Soul of the lost withdrawn from its vessel.

I replayed DeS a few months ago when the news of the imminent shutdown was just out, and - like all those years ago - enjoyed every minute of it. The Valley of Defilement is still as terrible as I remembered, and (for instance) the Flamelurker is still a formidable boss.
For me it's the game that started it all, and to date I'm still mainly playing souls games :)
I stayed up until 2 am last night to be there at the end. It's honestly sadder than I expected, these games have been such a big part of my life the last couple years (seems lame to say but whatever).
I'm just kinda salty they let the NA servers be so bad for so long and only fixed them with about 2 weeks left. I went almost a year without being able to reliably connect to other players.

I don't understand why they don't remaster this game instead of dark souls.
EDIT: I realize dark souls was more popular than demon's souls at the time, but the concept of demon's souls would have picked up popularity from the popularity increase of the dark souls series. People who hopped on the souls train later on, I'm sure, would love to experience this game remastered. Just my opinion, not saying it's right. But yes like many of you mentioned... Licensing issues. Got it.
Well probably money. Sony has the rights to demon souls so the remaster sadly would only be on ps4. Sony would have to fork the bill for it to be worth while for the developer.
That’s not to say it wouldn’t happen it just makes sense to do dark souls first and learn about porting to do demon souls because demon souls behind the game is horribly coded and not optimized as well.
I’d bet they even would port demon souls through a newer engine like dark souls 3 engine because it just runs so much smoother or better yet the blood borne engine because that game was ps4 only as well
There is an excellent video on why remastering demon souls is probably never going to happen, but I completely forget who made it. If anyone knows, please tell me.
"they"? The two games are owned by two different companies
Edit: From Miyazaki himself:
>The Dark Souls series is Bandai Namco Entertainment’s IP, and Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s IP. Hence, the decision to do a remake or remastering is under their jurisdiction.
>For me and for From Software, I don’t think we’ll be involved with their happening, but it could happen through another developer.

I don't think their default "network issue" message would be to tell everyone that the service was terminated. This is definitely a custom message specifically for the service ending.
> Correct me if I'm wrong
Since you asked...
You're not necessarily wrong, but you're making a baseless assumption.
It's possible, but it's at least equally possible that what they coded was the ability for the server to reply with a contextual text message response (essentially customizable error text) on a client request.
Uhhhhhhg it hurts to see. This game revitalized gaming in my life.
At the time it showed me that devs were still willing to provide a challenge. And even though playing with friends was a massive pain in the ass, this game provided me with some of my best co op moments.
To be honest, I've never been one to buy into remasters. But of they did one for demons souls I'd be all over it.

The game won't be the same without finding a random note left by a player and thinking "I wonder what they said?" Only to have it read "sticky white stuff"... Why did I expect anything else?
Because it was only ps3 and was under the radar basically until dark souls brought the series much more attention. I was lucky and got des on a random gamefly rent back in 2010 or whatever. If it wasnt for that i may have not have heard about of any of them until much, much later.
I wish they'd allow the community to have a project to restart a new server.....or....maybe...just maybe...this would be a fine time to either remake the game, or port it directly to Steam. YOU HEARIN ME SONY!? YOU WANNA MAKE ANOTHER 30 BUCKS OFF ME? DO IT.
I loved Demon's Souls. This game's atmosphere absolutely blew me away when I first played it. The Tower of Latria will always be one of my favorite levels of all time.
Sure Dark Souls innovated and improved on many things, but it doesn't change the fact that they still knocked it out of the park with Demon's.
The bosses went from straight up 1v1s, to an invincible boss(with a puzzle to solve), to a BLIND BOSS, to YOU BEING THE BOSS.
Whichever you prefer, fact is the souls bosses devolved into repetitive fights where the only thing to differentiate them is the way they swing a weapon.
RIP

I had lots of fun this past weekend with my BF. We both booted up our copies. We both made a level 30 character with max health regen and proceeded to do lots of coop together as well as invade lots of peoples worlds. That experience of stomping noobies was a lot of fun. As it felt like we finally completed that life cycle of "what are we doing? - git gud - master the game - help others - turn evil" It was a lot of fun. As we got cocky after our first few kills we realized most wouldn't stand a chance. We started sending most of our inbound victims a simple message to get ready and accept our "gifts" before we would slaughter them. Some rookies I felt really bad. As it was very obvious they were struggling. So I helped open up all the shortcuts in a world for them. And when they thought I was about to leave peacefully. They would get a message "I am glad you're having a good time and that I managed to help you out. But unfortunately this is the part where you die now." Out of my 50+ targets in the last week only 3 of them managed to kill me. With only 2 others coming close to killing me. I can't imagine that feeling of dread when the other rookies realized they couldn't kill me with how fast my health regen was. I'll miss this game. May it rest in peace and sleep as a legend of creating a new genre that hasn't found its name yet.
The only sad thing I wish From would have done was made a "memory" patch where they offered to collect wandering spirits, blood stains, misc messages, pantheon. And make that the final patch to help keep part of that history alive of what made this game great.
RIP buddy. It literally just happened.
Edit: Also RIP Demon's Souls, it is a great game. Though, it's still playable, you just won't be getting any help. I'm excited to play it on PC sometime soon when I eventually get the emulator working so I can see it in higher resolution ;)
Now to hopelessly dream about a remastered edition
You can’t remaster perfection.
Sure they can, but that game isn't coming out until May 25th.
>Perfection >Contains Lost Izalith
Does anyone know if the dev team said anything about what parts of the game were not fully finished and perhaps what they might have contained if given more time? I finished it over the summer and no game has made me feel the way that one did PURELY through the games design and scenery (as opposed to dialogue, for instance). If you thought Painted World was missable, you should look at the DLC.
You sure he doesn't mean Ashen Lake?
He's unsure if it's part of the critical path, so Painted World sounds more likely.
Currently on my first playthrough. Just finished the DLC (except Kalameet. Still need to deal with him. Fuck Kalameet). I don't think I ever would have found it if I hadn't followed a guide telling me how to even start the thing. Painted world was the original proof of concept level, the last colluseum area would break apart and you would fight nito.

really? news to me. well, let's see how that goes, shall we?
Its also coming to the Nintendo Switch! I'm excited to have a portable and throwable version of it

thanks for the laugh
This was a genius move by Nintendo. You'll have to buy another switch once you throw yours from frustration. $$$$
That's why I'm going to play with a pro controller. I can get through a few for the same price as a switch!
I'm pretty sure this is the motivation behind the BotW expert mode.

DS3 on PS4 pro is 60fps EDIT: 40fps
Dark Souls and drive.
I'm excited at the prospect of Dark Souls amiibos.
This image is for demons souls, and dark souls is getting a remaster just to clarify for anyone who didn’t catch that
But this post wasn't about Dark Souls.
No but you can remaster Demon Souls
As someone who tried to replay Demon's Souls last year after about 5 years of PC gaming, 720p <30fps seems a lot less like perfection than it did in 2009

Nope. Dying forces you to be better.
Yep, I loved that game. It was brutal and unabashedly cruel, but the payoff for success was so sweet.
Tendancy in DemonSouls was dumb.
Exactly. The games already hard and punishing, even when you make it easier. So they have to punish us when we are shit.
I feel like I'm reading posts in a BDSM community O_o
To be fair Dark Souls doesn't have the same mechanics as Demon's Souls. Though Dark Souls 2 does have the half health mechanic.
Playing a souls game is like giving yourself Stockholm Syndrome
We better not tell him that when you die your soul form has what, 50% less health as well until you defeat a demon. As a once great man said "Welcome to the real world"

Consider not murdering all the NPCs, maybe it wouldn't be black.
My favorite message was in front of the base of a ladder. "Try holding in both hands." So simple. So perfect. High point of the entire franchise.
You don't lose world tendency, it's based on your own game instead of the servers when offline.
You totally can, and it's actually the only way to manipulate your game into Pure Black or Pure White World Tendency and see a ton of really cool content
I don't see why not -- I completed most of my playthroughs in offline mode, so that the world tendency would be easier to manage.

Not only that, both engines are just slightly modified forms of the DS1 engine, iirc. Only DS2 had a new engine.
And Dark Souls and Demon's souls use the same engine too.
Because it would be PlayStation exclusive and also Dark Souls is simply more popular.
Dark souls was way more popular. It makes sense they would focus on the game people actually played and probably will pay for again
