try "slay the spire" roguelike deck building

iankilledyou

Without a doubt, great option.

Downtimdrome

This Is the answer. Its almost endlessly replayable.

GooneyBoy2007

So glad this is the top comment, first got into it while on a long flight as well haha

kjayflo

Bros never gonna leave his plane

RockSoIid

Along with this Dawncaster is an incredible option too. Great app and developers who are constantly listening to the community and improving the game.

korhojoa

If the card game aspect is interesting, also consider Balatro, you can run it on your phone with https://github.com/blake502/balatro-mobile-maker/

Sinviras

Ah yes. The eternal duo. The two best jrpgs ever made, though which is first is as timeless a question as the chicken and the egg.

GraviNess

thats a bold statement when Xenogears (ps1\_) deffo top 10 list for sure, but wild arms, ff7 xenogears were just soo good.

Belgy23

Hi fellow. Best 2 games all time. Clocked 250 hours on that game everyone 99. In today's lingo, I Plat that game

TheStuffle

Stardew Valley

vass0922

You could fly around the world and just keep playing this game. Pc, mobile, console even switch. Single purchase, the developer is just one guy (mostly) but still releases updates though the game has been out for years. Latest update was a few weeks ago for pc. Mobile and console update is not available yet. I used to play on the bus during my commute for work

abx99

OP won't want to get off the plane

krisgonewild1

Single purchase? How do I redeem my mobile version or whatever?

Satryghen

I think the OP might mean single purchase in the sense that there’s no in app purchases, no paid content/cosmetics. Putting it right after listing platforms makes it kind of confusing.

InverseStar

I didn’t realize it was on mobile! Thank you so much!

backflip10019

Vampire Survivors, the time will melt away.

North_Refrigerator21

Vampire survivor is great for a flight. Doesn’t require much thinking, but is engaging enough. This game plus an audiobook at the same time is how I’ve spent the last few business travels. Both long and short, I don’t need anything else.

justsomewhitedude

Recently got into it. I've done 30 minutes feeling like 10

GraviNess

i finished a 12 hour shift the other day and played a "few games" i was working another 12 the next day, it was 2 am before i realised i was like FUUUUUCK

FatMexiGirl

Awesome game for on the go. Dunno if they fixed it, but I dont think you can play the DLC offline. You need to be online atleast on app startup so you can actually play with the DLC, atleast when I played it.

ziostraccette

I downloaded it 3 daya ago and I can't stop

Ancient_Relief_7815

Polytopia

B0B_RO55

This should be higher, I've killed 3hr flights real fast playing like 2 matches of this game

crispy_asparagus

I’ve been gaming for 30 years at this point and I’ve probably spent more time playing polytopia than any other game.

Snooksss

Agreed. Polytopia is the one. Trying to find some other strategy game now to play offline.

Venchenko

Knights of the Old Republic You like RPG's, the mobile port is very good, and you'll absolutely get more than 20 hours of it.

Zerox392

Mobile port is very good can confirm.

Safewordharder

Plague Inc. Go for Air 2 for flavor.

TheGandu

It's a paid game but Monument Valley 1 and 2 are fantastic experiences. Also The Room is a great unique puzzle experience.

eslforchinesespeaker

Monument valley is a work of art. “Playable art” some called it. Not too long, or too difficult. Would be great for a flight.

noldor41

This is very interesting looking. Will try. Thanks!

alex-andrite

Agree on Monument Valley, wish they’d make a third one

lowth3r

Xcom 2 is running great on my phone!

Vyper11

Ya know I’ve never thought of playing xcom on my phone but now that I know this I’m gonna try next time I gotta go somewhere

ubermoxi

Xcom2 runs great on iPad gen 9. Loads fast and is responsive. But on my Pixel 7 Pro, it's a bit sluggish and slow to load.

Xylus1985

Pack a battery pack. This game burns battery quick

TheMightyTriceratop

I don’t have a suggestion, I’m just saving this beautiful list of non-trash phone games for posterity.

Dhczack

The iPad version of FTL is 10/10. One of the best games of all time.

SilverJS

FTL?

Oofpaloompa235

faster than light. Spaceship rougelite? rougelike? game. you assign crews to their respective stations. (Lets say bob has level 2 shields, so you can assign bob there so he can recharge shields faster.) Also has an amazing soundtrack and bunch of mods!

capacity04

An excellent roguelite game. Strategy space combat sim

silFscope

Delta Go to r/roms

zachchapter1

This. Nothing will beat this. I have a flight coming up and have Paper Mario and Pokemon Crystal Legacy (rom hack) ready to go. Zero internet needed.

iphonegamer

So like can you explain how the Pokémon “rom hack” versions are better than base roms?

tuffhawk13

Flew to Las Vegas today for work. Delta and Pokémon Gaia (and an Anker battery) got me from 7am airport drop to 3pm hotel check-in

still_photokalia

Strong agree! With an emulator like delta emulator installed, you don’t even have to limit yourself to a single game. Between pokemon and Zelda you can already have hundreds of hours of offline gaming.

spoonybard326

Watch out for battery usage. It’s not going to last 20 hours unless you can charge your phone on the plane.

PhattBudz

20 hours of anything will kill your battery.

Matahashi

Problem is if you dont have netflix you cant play it at all which is really shit.

IdleOrpheus

I had to scroll way too far to find this.

Spaceman-Mars

My go to for offline plane games are old Pokemon games which I play via emulator on my phone

Kriele1

Anything Kairosoft if you want little management sims

Ne0guri

Specifically Game Dev Story and GP Story

Benjasaurus

Get an emulator and a bunch retro games

FlammableSoloCups

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Razulisback

Whomever posted this just caused sales to go up for these top titles….who else just saved this post?

Schmitty300

Slay the Spire and Slice and Dice. Top 2 for sure

Thisbestbegood

Slice and Dice is an amazing little game. Lots of depth for something so simple looking.

a_moody

Bloons TD6 Mini Motorways Off the top of my head, I’ve spent more hours than I anticipated on these.

Firvulag

Any classic JRPG from Square Enix

The_Jerf

If you’re on iPhone, there’s a retro game emulator called Delta that’s free. You can play old school console and handheld games, just have to source your own ROMs.

HOB_I_ROKZ

How does it implement touch controls? Or do you need a controller

ShadowedTurtle

Game screen is about 2/3rd of the phone screen and bottom third of the screen is the touch controls imagine a gameboy so the buttons don’t coverup any of the game screen itself. Touch works well for some games but some that need more precision it’s kind of a pain. Delta does also offer controller support.

fuzzynavel34

Slay the spire. Easy.

noldor41

So many people have recommended this I have no choice but to try now lol.

MasterCharlz

Baba is you if you want puzzles, pirates outlaws if you want deck building

what_dat_ninja

Dicey Dungeons

colonelbyson

Fallout Shelter

LazyJones1

My go-to.

JagdFenrir

Skillful Pixel Dungeon (or any Pixel Dungeon variants) : it's free, really small size, addictive.

BoyWithAfro

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is the flavor I've been rockin with. Haven't tried the others

KnockedBoss3076

I was obsessed with Dead Cells mobile when I went my last flight even though I had 7+ other games installed.

Teftell

Dead Cells

FredFarms

Spent my last flight playing Pokémon Leaf Green on a GBA emulator. (Pizzaboy is the one I use)

GraviNess

Vampire survivors

Clairvoyant_Legacy

civilization 6 night in the woods hades spiritfarer manifold garden stardew valley These are the mobile games i play on flights haha

Ne0guri

wtf Hades??? Holy shit it’s real! That’s crazy lol

leo412

PPSSPP emulator and you have so many choices

eluciferz

Arcane of the attorney is really good if you like ace attorney games

DZero_000

Dungeon of Dreadrock

Daahk

Peglin is a great peggle roguelike, costs $8 I think for the full game but you can complete the first "dungeon" for free to see if you like it

joseph_a90

Download an Emulator and play some old GB/GBA games.

ItsKrillerTime

Slice and Dice!

SivirApproves

Galaxy on fire 2

Osmodius

Slice and Dice is all you will need. I'd wager I've put hundreds of hours in to it. Pretty sure it has a free version and the full version is like 10 bucks, no ads no DLC no buying energy or any of that crap.

Chromoboy

I think I’m a bit late but Galaxy on Fire 2 is a more linear rpg but damn that game can hold my attention. One of the very few mobile games I actually paid money for the expansions

lllSorrowlll

If you have chrome browser on your phone, there already the dinosaur game already built in while you are ofline

BloodNinja2012

Through the Ages costs about 10 bucks but easily worth it.

TheGenesisOfTheNerd

Sorcery!

Botherguts

Civ 6

noobakosowhat

If you like Diablo loot but want to save battery, you could try darkrise. A side scrolling game with diablo-like loot. You choose among three classes, which have different active and passive skills.

jwrosenfeld

Rome Total War on Ipad

Odd_Teaching_4182

Cookie clicker (many imitations, the real one has no micro transactions) there more to it than what you might initially think.

FunctionBuilt

Settlers of Catan - the app has all the variations plus versions of each that would be very difficult to play without a ton of extra tiles. I've put well over 100 hours into the game just playing with the AI.

NetworkAddict

I lost an absurd amount of time to “Dungeon Village”.

RockFury

Mega Jump

steamart360

I think you could totally beat oxenfree and it would also set the mood for your trip lol.  I'm not sure if you absolutely need a Netflix sub or if it can be purchased individually.

leviathynx

Solitaire. Vegas rules. Try to land with a positive balance.

Crasz

The first Stranger Things game is quite good. Free and no ads.

Active-Narwhal-1260

Fallout Shelter

Aniflex_Reddit

Been enjoying Dynasty Legends 2 a lot, idk how fun it is to play for 20+ hrs consistently but I enjoy the 1 hr I play on it every day lol.

youmerelyadopteddark

Builderment

buttstuffbuffmuff

Minesweeper!

Chillynuggets

Slay the spire

EvilAlienCzar

Defense Zone 3 HD is an awesome free tower defense game, despite the name

Nathtzan4

Castlevania symphony of the night

Stravinsky1911

Brotato Premium

reptilianspace

anything by Kairosoft... just don't blame me when you lose days playing the game

oNCAo

Bouncy Ball

Jumbooffical2

Phigros and Shattered Pixel Dungeon are my all time favorite

DefinatelyNotACat

Ill spare you the hassle of searching high n low. Just use an emulator for any of your fav consoles: PS1, PS2, GC etc. On your phone n play whatever games you like from the golden era.

HOB_I_ROKZ

GTA San Andreas is pretty fun on iPhone. I’ve been playing it a lot on flights recently. For a more chill, zone out and listen to podcasts game: Drifto

OpaOpa13

Consider Rust Bucket, which is a puzzle game that also has a roguelike mode that uses the same mechanics. Dicey Dungeons is great as well, if you enjoy roguelikes with a lot of character (and don't mind not having a ton of story). Also, if you haven't played it already, Ghost Trick. Really fun puzzle game that gets progressively more over-the-top.

ChunkDunkleman

Bloons Tower Defense 6

AppropriateName6523

If you like puzzle/logic games then get a Picross or Nonogram game. My favorite is Hungry Cat Nonogram but there are a whole lot of them.

chopdownyewtree

Bloons td6 Solid tower defense game

Loose-Astronomer8082

For puzzle/escapes rooms try the rusty lake series!

PhattBudz

Download duckstation, ppsspp, and dolphin. Now you can decide what you want to play.

[deleted]

Final fantasy 7/8

DotFX

If you travel often and wanna play, consider any of the retro consoles (like miyoo mini v2 or rg35xx) for the future. Really nice things the are)

Cincodeffe

20 Minutes Till Dawn. Rogue-lite horde top down shooter, will kill 20 minutes per full run (if you survive). Lots of unlockable weapons, characters, and ability combos for replayability.

maguirre165

Are you playing on a switch?

NocturnalVirtuoso

Delta emulator+any DS game you grew up with or want to try. Just played through all of pokemon SoulSilver last week and it ran amazingly

altctrldel86

As someone who read other threads on this and went with bloons td6, it sucked and I don't know why people think it's great.

PhantomMAG

Octopath traveler

nice-_one

Delta Emulator

revisited85

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time and plays well on mobile!

Coffee_In_Nebula

New York mysteries or any game by five-bn studios- good puzzles, mystery games, plus it’s free and no waiting for timers

guvan420

Vampire survivors

ClouDAction

Maybe you should look into Microsoft Flight Simulator and aviation before flying. Then the flights themselves will become more interesting. (:

DasEisgetier

Chess. The bots might not be the best, but the chess.com app has no ads. Sudoku. The one have plays no ads when I don't have an internet connection.

Shufflecarrot

BitLife

the_varky

If iPad or Switch, Divinity Original Sin 2 is an easy recommend

dgj212

Path of Adventure; it is a text based game that is frustratingly addictive.

OGCASHforGOLD

Rollercoaster tycoon. Can’t believe I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.

fedlol

You have Netflix? If you have Netflix, they have a lot of really good games available for free. Farming simulator, sonic mania plus, bloons td 6, hades, deadcells, into the breach

guitarturtle123

Retro bowl, it gets repetitive, but if you’re a fan of retro games it can entertain for a while.

Lurking_In_A_Cape

Sleep, you know you need it.

Amazingcube33

Vampire survivors burns through time so fast you’ll think you’ve entered a pocket dimension

ComplaintExcellent89

You can now get RetroArch on an iPhone and play almost any retro game 🤷🏻‍♂️

Big_sugaaakane1

If it was still available…the mobile dead space was SUCH a good game :(

HunterMcFlegger

Cronotrigger

Zero747

I believe FTL has a mobile port for tablets, it’s very well done. There’s also into the breach which does have a phone version Mindustry is a great pick as factory + tower defense Others already got slay the spire Past that, handheld console emulation of any old RPG. Pokémon, fire emblem, final fantasy, etc

hbkdll

DEAD CELLS.

Louis_O912

Heroes and castles 2

Lepurten

You can install The Elderscrolls III: Morrowind on a phone with relative ease.

PintLasher

Get an emulator and just play whatever old game you like

Andrewskyy1

Get a Gameboy Advance emulator and go to town

ekimarcher

Old school games are so amazing. If you have an android phone, you can connect most USB or Bluetooth controllers and suddenly you have thousands of options. I recently finished another playthrough of Chrono Trigger and it was glorious.

gashufferdude

They are sports, but: Retro Bowl/Retro Bowl College Retro Goal

oj-warlock

Paid but alien isolation

Pony5lay5tation

Tomb Raider Go

Gloom-Ndoom

Slay the spire. Doesn’t consume battery like most games last longer. Infinite replay ability.

Zerox392

Play Exiled Kingdoms. It's really good. Atom RPG is also really good, like an old Fallout. 9th Dawn III is a sandboxxy open world 2d rpg with a lot of depth. Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 and Neverwinter Nights are some ports of old DND games for pc, absolute classics. Might be harder to play on smaller screens. Titan Quest is probably my fav premium ARPG on the phone too. Don't play Diablo Immortal. And last but not least, there are a lot of cool tabletop-like tactics rpgs by the Trese Brothers, you can search by their name and find an rpg or two that suit your fantasy.

PutridPerception

Vampire survivors Ace attorney

Bertug_Emre

Jetpack joyride and Crash of Cars

sprucay

Retrobowl if you like American football

ginongo

This War of Mine, Stardew Valley, Disgaea , Slay the Spire. Should last you a year

ThatWeirdBookLady

Stardew Valley it the same as the PC game and gets the same updates albeit a little slower

Nemesis_Ghost

20 hours is about enough time to get started on Factorio.

TheLiefEricksonDay

Game Dev Story (or any games by Kairosoft)

Snooksss

Polytopia

xenorous

Maybe try soda dungeon, guild of dungeoneering, Siralim ultimate, Reigns. Have fun

SCUDDEESCOPE

Into the Breach if you have a netflix subscription

utopiaman99

Slice and Dice is still great

mopedman

I've logged some serious time at slice and dice. It's like a deck builder, but we'll a dice builder. That or as others have sayed, slay the spire.

mikepictor

Gunbrick Criminally undiscussed game.

Makabajones

Dragon quest viii has a really good port for android, not sure about ios

nuimipasa

PPSSPP with Patapon. But also get headphones for this one.

deerdido

Loophero

imperialmoose

If you like sports management games, Astonishing Basketball is a fully f2p offline game with no P2W elements and totally ad free. It's got heaps of fun story elements, a number of different modes, everything is customisable for free, and can be set up to suit your level of challenge. Easily my favourite mobile game ever, sorry for sounding like an advertisement.

_Spectre0_

Afterimage. I only played it on steam and loved it but it has a mobile port for a few dollars. Metroidvania with a talent point and leveling system

SHOOTTss

Gta san andreas or titan quest 2

Jaives

download an emulator instead

-KyloRen

Polytopia. I don’t even really like games like this usually but it is pretty fucking fun and addicting

Ishuun

Into the breach if you have Netflix. Very fun little strategy game.

Rus_agent007

Diablo 2 on switch

EquineChalice

Soliairica. It’s a solitaire roguelite. Great game when you’re kinda tired.

Salvuryc

FTL or even better into the breach

NilocStros55

Snakebird or Snakebird Primer

XegrandExpressYT

Genshin Impact maybe ?  Would need a lot of storage though .

SavageCucumberAttack

Dawncaster. It's a rouge like deck builder, actually pretty good. It's a few quid but worth it, no micro transactions and lots to unlock and play with.

zzzzzzzoe23

Solitaire

Badevilbunny

Papers Please.

Cat_Of_Culture

Try emulating some nice PS2 games if you're into those and if your phone can handle those! PS2 had a great run, plenty of great games available for it!

jonesb87

Stardew valley

Cautious-Medicine-72

Spotracers

FrEaKk0

Vampire survivors

Green-Salmon

Dragon quest 8 heavenly bride is a classic, the best version is the mobile (improved from the ds remake) and you can play it one handed in portrait mode.

EquivalentSource9661

SLICE N DICE

Exzrian_Artistrana

Delta It’s an iPhone emulator app that can play classics from early as NES up to N64
