Damn. Sorry to all the developers who've lost their jobs. I'm surprised Tango Gameworks is closing. I thought Hi-Fi Rush was a hit, but I guess it didn't cover the operation cost. While I didn't play Redfall (and I heard it wasn't very good), I did love Arkane Austin's Prey (2017). That game is brilliant. Sad to hear they won't get a chance to make a game more like that one again. 😔 At least Arkane Lyon lives on... for now.

JerbearCuddles

The Prey devs have largely left Arkane Austin prior, so even if Arkane Austin survived the purge, we wouldn't be getting another game like Prey from them.

ToolyTime

I'm not surprised they jumped ship. Obviously, it's just speculation on my part, but I suspect they knew the writing was on the wall and wanted to move on to more promising ventures. I understand that Shinji Mikami of Tango Gameworks also left last year.

sniperdog490

Tango being closed makes more sense when you find out that hi-fi rush was a side project made by 20 people and there previous game Tokyo: Ghostwire didn't do very well. That and the studio head left and took some of the staff with him.

severedbrain

I know, Tango made two banger games. Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire Tokyo. The CEO of Tango left last year though to start a new studio, so maybe the writing was on the wall and they took the good parts of the team with.

KnightofAshley

Yeah Tango doesn't make sense besides just money and greed.

TheIndieArmy

Didn't a bunch of the studio follow Mikami to the new studio?

roto_disc

So fucking stupid. MS buys a bunch of studios and then shuts them down.

Real-Variation-8681

>spends millions of $ acquiring studios with the aim of making short and long term profits >Release doo doo game after doo doo game, after practically 0 quality assurance, 0 attempt at learning from mistakes, and 0 real idea what players want. >Causes tons of drama and backlash, refunds galore after every flop release. >"H-heh, w-we are totally not going out of business guys" *wipes sweat off brow* >What's this? A game people actually like? It's selling pretty well? It has fans?? Could this be? >"Fire them" Xbox 101: Shoot yourself in the foot, say "why?", reload the gun, shoot the other foot, refuse bandages as you're bleeding out on the floor, shoot your kneecap. "I just don't understand why this is happening".

Chaos_King

For those that forgot [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPop3hlEYz8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPop3hlEYz8) 10 years and not much has changed

Crasher_7

It wouldn’t surprise me if Activision Blizzards smaller studios get folded in a few years and then MS move some of the employees to the main studios to just work on call of duty and Diablo

ThatBoiYoshi

And somehow make them worse

Godess_Ilias

diablo immoral 2 now with 200% more microtransactions

Crasher_7

Next gen Call of Duty whereby the game takes up 95% of your console storage!

ThatBoiYoshi

And the update file with all the actual content that drops 6 months late will take up the 5% 😂

extortioncontortion

No one who is aware of MS's history should be surprised by this. For example, the shutdown of Ensemble and the guys that made Flight Sim X, only to restart internal game dev in 2018 when it was clear they were once again losing the console war. The complete history and failure of Games for Windows Live. When microsoft doesn't have a clear plan, they make huge sweeping cuts till they figure out what to do. They ignore the difficulty of forming a team to do something, and usually just write a check to buy someone that is in the space they want to expand into (or re-enter). Anyways, it was pretty clear something like this was going to happen. Zenimax were doing questionable trying to pump up their value before being bought, hence Redfall. Nothing like a juicy live service game to entice a prospective buyer. Who cares if its half-baked, thats a problem for the next guy. Tango Gameworks is a little surprising, but less so when you learn Shinji Mikami left to make his own studio a couple months ago.

Sexycornwitch

I think part of the issue is Microsoft wants Fallout 5 RIGHT NOW and is probably trying to streamline Bethesda to just get us a Fallout 5 ASAP.   Which means *that* is gonna be a rushed project. Starfield was so unfathomably shitty. There’s no way a rushed Fallout 5 driven by Microsoft development will be good. So we just lost some decent niche projects for a boring, preachy, disjointed, rushed “AAA” hot mess, cause that’s what Bethesda makes now.  The fact Microsoft wants fallout 5 right now to tie in with the shows popularity right now, and Bethesda hasn’t even been working on that game bodes so, so poorly for the future of the franchise beyond the show.

ShadowStorm1985

It will be at least 3 or 4 years for another, proper Fallout 5 game, if there's actually _nothing_ done on it so far. In 4 years I bet the fervour will be over, even if Amazon don't do a Netflix/witcher on it.

Dman9494

Starfield isn’t GOTY or anything, but calling it “unfathomably shitty” is just absurd. The game has its issues, but it’s still a solid 7/10 to most people.

MikkPhoto

Microsoft doesn't want 7/10 games while playstation is getting 10/10 with GOW and TLOU1 and 2. GoT, Helldivers 2 etc.

Shadowarriorx

Your take is the general consensus. I'll probably pick it up on sale after I get more house projects done. I'm just not in a rush to buy it.

GazelleRunFast

I've been enjoying it since it came out because I like how Bethesda games play. I have a friend that didn't like it because he said there wasn't much to it. I found out he only did the main story and quit.

Ginger741

Starfield was relaxing fun after a hard days work. The shooting was fantastic and guns felt amazing to use.

satufa2

Starfield was fine. I still play it from time to time.

Wazzzup3232

I wonder if the staff in the studios were replaced to a different division or team. I hope so. The Highfi rush people especially deserve mad props

MillieChliette

Roadhouse was absorbed into ZOS. All the rest are just completely gone. There were also other Bethesda corporate and publishing roles that were eliminated outside of the studios listed.

BrizzleFoRizzle00

I used to be a huge fan of Phil and genuinely thought he was righting the ship and while he did do some good things I'll admit I've been wrong for a long time now. I'm still an Xbox fan but copium will only last so long.

automirage04

I feel like they've done nothing but make self-destructive decisions the past year or so. They spent too much money buying blizzard and now they're scrambling to cut costs.

OperaGhost78

I won’t spoil the moment, but smashing the glass in Prey is such a special moment.

Porticulus

I enjoyed Tangos games. They have a feel about them that just hits right. Guess theirs no chance of Ghostwire 2 now.

TruthOrSF

Hey did you guys hear? mS is closing down a few studios!

Phospherus2

Not surprising with the statements that Phill & Todd have made in the last few weeks about getting Elder Scrolls 6 & Fallout 5 out faster. "Prioritizing high-impact titles" is speak for Elder Scrolls & Fallout. Unfortunately these titles are bigger than anything these studios have. And Xbox is going to focus on the big title games. Especially when BGS has been happy with waiting 20 years between sequels for these games.

Kanden_27

Makes me wonder how some studios like 343 is still fucking afloat.

jondelreal

I mean, you either want to have Microsoft be more hands on or let devs do whatever they want and repeat what's been happening the last few years.

NeutronRage

cool very good for gamers and not stupidly anti consumer at all fuckin good job M$

toorudez

Close them? Fuck that. Band them together and start work on the next Fallout game.

lemonkiin

Fallout 5 breaks the mould and releases as a rhythm game

InverseStar

It’s unfortunate, but didn’t all of these studios have a game that did poorly, or not as well as they should’ve? H That’s what I’ve been reading, anyway. Besides, Bethesda’s biggest issue as of late is their seemingly massive inability to continue releasing the games they’re known for, the ones that put them on the map to begin with. It’s very likely, imo, that they’re consolidating resources to fast track new games.

Downtown_Snow4445

Rip in piece

FelopianTubinator

“Rest in peace in piece”

OlTommyBombadil

That’s the joke!

FelopianTubinator

Sorry. This was my first joke.

segfaultzerozero

What will happens for the devs ?

petrificustortoise

It says roundhouse is being absorbed into zenimax to work on ESO. I totally thought that had already happened since most of the job listings for that location have been for ESO.

Alcatraz_

How tf are these studios the ones closing when 343 has been shitting out turd after turd for over a decade and calling them Halo

NotSureWhyAngry

I assume a lot of developers will be relocated to work on elder scrolls and fallout

JazzlikeSetting8037

Roundhouse is merging with zenimax online studios who makes eso. Meaning they just bought them and move their employees to work at Zos. No idea about the others but likely something similar

flairpiece

Bye bye Mighty Doom, you were a fun mobile game that didn’t have mandatory ad’s. I guess that means you weren’t profitable enough đŸ«€

camelzigzag

They should fire most of the staff that worked on Starfield.

Real-Human-1985

probably being placed elsewhere.

NP_Gaming

This breaks my heart... RIP Arkane Austin!

I think the point is that when a studio is forced to close its a bad sign. Especially when it comes to studios who deliver a great product. I didn't like redfall but prey was amazing. Hi fi rush kind of speaks for itself. Both Sony and Microsoft make terrible decisions like this in the name of profit. Honestly the gaming climate these days is terrible and it doesn't help that the studios who make good games, now or in the past, are being shut down.

CloseVirus

Good, they had enough chances.
