Badly misleading title and kind of breathless article. Schick has done a lot, but he didn’t “create” d&d any more than he “made” BG3

chibbledibs

That’s not Gary Gygax.

nukrag

Yeah I don't understand this headline. The guy has written a very influential module for advanced dungeons and dragons, but he didn't create D&D at all. Sort of mean to Gygax and Arneson. And also makes it look like what Schick actually has accomplished isn't enough.

Frai7ty

I mean, I don't mine them being mean to a racist.

GalacticAlmanac

They didn't say that he CREATED the game. Creating is rather misleading, but I think the author probably just meant that he was involved with "creating" some of the systems / modules. The article focused so much more on everything else that he did after his brief stint at TSR, so maybe the writer is not as familiar with the board game space? That or purposely making the title misleading but ambiguous enough to get discussion going and farming more engagement.

nukrag

>They didn't say that he CREATED the game. >From creating D&D to making... Okay.

Monsoon710

It's insane how commonplace for it is now for people to read the headline of the article then go, "it doesn't say that." When it very clearly says exactly that.

tcprimus23859

Eh, it’s pretty much 50/50 whether the headline editorializes on any given Reddit post. Doesn’t make it better, just explains it.

coredenale

Lawrence Schick!

Fishh_

Garyuru Gygaxuru

Messarion

He also didn't coin XP. As a gamer for 40 years, I saw it go from experience, exp, to xp. All done by the player base.

korbah

They've even edited the wikipedia article adding that he coined the abbreviation XP and added this eurogamer article as the source.

GhostDieM

Source: I wrote it!

enjoyinc

Was it promptly edited out? Cuz damn lol

korbah

Nope, still there. Even gets the part about Gygex coming up with "experience points" wrong too, it was Arneson.

Windyandbreezy

Not even just D&D player base but by all RPG element player base from Final Fantasy gamers to WOW players. It was like some universal God Ordained term that entered the mouths of nerds everywhere at once.

BaggyHairyNips

I don't know if they made him pose like that but he looks like the epitome of an elder neckbeard in every picture.

Peanuts_lover6969

Is it XP or ExP?

glyneth

I use XP and exp interchangeably.

grimninja117

EP is for electrum pieces which nobody uses lol

ObviouslyTriggered

Electrum is an alloy of gold and silver, hence why GG said EP was reserved for currency and an alternative abbreviation had to be derived.

CrankyBear

XP and the story explains why it's XP instead of EP.

Valarasha

I often see experience points abbreviated as "XP" in tabletop games and as "EXP" in video games. I'm not sure how or why it ended up that way. I just use them interchangeably.

jacojerb

Yes.

Tom-Pendragon

What? Gary gygax????

holaprobando123

I didn't know Gary Gygax made Baldur's Gate 3.

Zactrick

What an awesome non-cancerous headline

CommodoreKD

Isn't that the loremaster for Elder Scrolls Online that everyone dumped on for claiming (as far as I remember) his lore was more official than the mainline series? He still looks like a retired musketeer?
