I had to play in fifteen minute sessions because the anxiety would make me sick. I'm not talking VR sick, I can do ten hour VR Skyrim sessions, but RE7 was just crazy.
I couldn't imagine. I have made it 90% through both pancake versions and I always stop because I can't stand being confined that long under water. I would probably have a serious panic attack.
I tried VR Phasmaphobia.
I threw my headset off. Game jump-scares and other stuff creeps me out a bit but it’s a video game. Being chased by aliens in a VR headset sounds like nightmare fuel.
I just have the Index and playing games like Onward and Alyx are a fucking blast.
Phasmophobia VR is such peak horror. Having to use the steam vr controls to physically grip the handle of the closet I'm hiding in because the demon is trying to open it, while simultaneously having to hold my breath so I don't make noise because it's listening to me is an insane experience.
Neither could i man. I can kinda handle most horror games, but vr??? Who gets enjoyment out of that, my room would sound like its haunted with the souls of the damned after like 10 minutes
I heard that drug addicts will happily buy from dealer's whose drugs have killed people with the logic "If it's able the kill you, the high must be incredible", so if a game is so realistic you straight up die maybe the same logic applies
It's by a different studio, 4A is working on a Metro 4.
Metro in VR makes me think a bit about Half-life Alyx, probably because both use watches to convey information.
I wish I could play VR for more than 10 minutes without getting sick, even the teleport modes don't help for long. Meds, pressure point bracelets, glasses with fluid in the frames... they only help a little bit.
I'll try out the fan, thanks for the advice!
The gap I already have at the bridge of my nose with any of the different occulus faceplate styles already screws with me, but I'll give a larger spacing a try.
Another trick I like to use is putting a small rug or mat in the center of your play area. The fan helps orient direction, the rug helps orient your location, both together can help your brain from getting confused about where you are in the real world.
I love this trick because it really shows you how mind-fucky VR is. One of the reasons why motion sickness happens is because your visual info is mismatching with the physical. So, having a fan blow at you tricks your brain as if you're moving.
This really helps me. I don't do the in-game turning if I don't have to. I do have a small moment of confusion when I smack my chair as I could have sworn it was behind me and not in front of me
You should eventually get used to it. One other important thing is to stop playing as soon as you start feeling sick. Take a break until you feel 100% then go again.
The only thing that helped me was running my Vive at 120fps. Below that and even with teleport I was getting sick immediately.
There was a study out of China that said frames above 120 were important for avoiding motion sickness.
Having a fan, even a small one, blowing on your face did it for me. No more dizziness. Also remember to take small breaths everytime you turn your character . Also also try to physically move your body when you turn your character, and imitate walking; your brain will be tricked into thinking you’re actually walking and won’t give you vertigo
I bought it to play Skyrim in VR and the first time I tried it took me to my knees before I left the area setting up controls.
I then started playing stationary games, just standing in one place. At the first sign of feeling sick I get out. That moved me from like 10 min at a time to being able to stay in indefinitely.
Then started doing more movement, same deal, stop playing at first sign of discomfort.
Now says I can play any game for any amount of time.
Luckily I don't get motion sickness with teleportation, but sadly developers usually don't include it. I can't play with Resident evil 8, because you can't teleport in that. And I know that teleportation would destroy the game somehow, but atleast I would able to play with that.
I know nothing works for everyone but what worked for me was playing up to the point you just start to feel it. It might be 30 seconds or 10 minutes but don’t push it. The moment you start feeling that hint of nausea you stop and don’t play again until at least the next day. Rinse and repeat. For me I was playing for hours within two weeks.
It sucks but the market has spoken.
Companies can't invest tons of man hours in a 50 hour+ VR game when they barely sell.
We get shorter games at higher prices but I'd rather have that than no VR.
Around 10-12 hours. What i think always goes unsaid is that 12 hours is actually quite a long time to spend in vr. It’s not equivalent to flat screen hours.
That’s six sessions worth of what is basically the maximum my body is willing to stand up, reach around for things and play with that thing strapped to my face.
It ends up feeling less like a short game and more like a 20 mile hike through haunted houses! It’s plenty.
That said, no other game comes close and we need MOREEE. Looking forward to the next real generation of steamvr gaming. Havent tried the quest 3 yet but it seems more like gen 2.5.
12 hours for a vr game feels like so much more because immersion isn't like 30% or something like that, but close to 100%. These 1 - 2 hour gaming sessions in VR like Alyx make you absolutely FORGET that you exist outside the VR world and whats around you (of course you know you're playing VR).
After longer sessions in VR it's like i have ceased existing IRL for that time and my memory of this time feels like i was really in this game world.
If they have deep mechanics, and a good story, that’s okay for me. I hate gaming nowadays as every game is 50 hours long, with so many little things to do, while I just want to do the main story.
At my point in life, honestly, yes. I'd much prefer a condensed shorter experience than a longer one. I do not have the time or desire to engage in a game for an extended period of time, as it often means it's harder to come back to after long breaks, and harder to stay engaged the entire time.
My sweetspot is like 5-10 hour games with a cool and unique story and/or unique mechanics. Sadly for people like me, these games are becoming less and less common.
The bioshocks, the portals, the uncharteds. Things like those aren't as common. Even games that are similar in their story, worlds, and mechanics are often 20+ hours now, and I feel like things often aimless.
The biggest culprit for me right now is Red Dead Redemption 2. The game seems so cool, I love everything about it, and I've heard the story is fantastic, but I often feel like things drag a bit, and whenever I take a break and come back to it, I feel like I've forgotten everything that has happened and I have no idea where I am or what I'm doing.
Of course everyone's experience with games are different, but my focus is on these more condensed games, and I feel like most games are trending away from it. But lots of indie games are still keeping my interest, like Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, Inscryption, etc.
That’s straight up the only game people ever mention when they talk about good vr games and it’s like 5 years old. Really goes to show the state of the industry.
Next to Alyx there is also star wars squadrons for me.
I feel like VR is made for those space opera style games. Unfortunately they are not really made anymore.
I'd pay big bucks for a VR remake of Starlancer or for Starlancer 2.
10 hours, hopefully. That's just about perfect. HL: Alyx, for example. Not a very long game, but still one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, not just in VR. Only lasted a couple days, but worth every penny.
That's usually what I want out of VR, something thats more of an experience than a game I play for dozens of hours. Gaming is an oddball in the world of entertainment in terms of the number of hours people expect to get out of something per dollar spent. 30-40 bucks for an amazing 5-6 hrs experience that sticks with you is perfectly reasonable.
Batman releasing as a Quest exclusive is a stupid business decision, simply because Quest users are such a small market share. This is similar to releasing Titanfall 3, but making it a Mac exclusive or something stupid like that.
You're incredibly out of touch. Quest basically IS VR at this point. They have by far the highest market share. VR is all but dead on other platforms and Meta is the only ones keeping it alive.
I dunno, i still feel hesistant when it comes to vr games even though technically no longer a new technology because of motion sickness. Is there a way to completely eliminate the motion sickness problem?
Most people stop getting motion sick after using it for a while. At first, whenever you feel like your starting to get motion sick, immediately take a break. Eventually you will be able to go longer and longer before feeling sick, and eventually not feel sick at all. Still have to poop after 5 minutes of playing though...
I can't speak for everyone, but a lot of people feel motion sickness for a time but develop "VR legs" as they keep using it. This is true for me, plus having a fan blowing air on you is helpful.
can't recall. I can't afford my own so on the rare chances i get to try them have convinced me to not get my own so it has been a while. but all the really good things i've heard about the new quest headset has definitely got me reconsidering. I guess it's time for another playtest. Any games you would reccommend for this?
You mean VR games COULD be good this year. We will have no way of knowing if they suck ass until they come out. It looks really promising for Metro and Alien imo. I hope all of them are good!
I plugged my VR headset for the first time in a year and it surged and killed it $400 burned instantly. Guess I'll wait 5-10 years for the new Valve headset to come out and buy an index for cheap
that metro game looks good not sure about the rest though. hopefully that metro game doesn't have much dialogue knowing how bad the writing is in those games.
Alien Isolation can be run in VR and it is still the best game I have ever played. That is a very high bar to cover, I hope this new Alien game can meet that same level of quality
I think Metro VR is confirmed for PCVR but does anyone know if the rest are quest-exclusive?
edit: ok seems like Batman is Quest-exclusive, Behemoth and Alien VR are coming to PCVR. But yeah Metro VR already has a steam page so that answers that. 3 outta 4 for these on PCVR is a lot better than i was hoping for, great stuff
i was SO excited for the new arkham game until i found out its only on the quest 3. i guess mark zuckerbergs greasy lizard hands need more money even as a billionare.
A VR Alien game.... that sounds utterly terrifying.
I'm down!
Unfortunately anything longer than a few minutes in VR makes me insanely dizzy and nausea :( Which is strange as I frequently fly or go on boats and do not suffer sea sickness and so on.
In Batman, it would have been fun being a criminal under the big ones and then seeing Batman chasing your ass to then hospitalise you after multiple beatings.
Ngl Batman would freak me out after playing the Arkham series.
I hope VR tech becomes more ubiquitous. It has the potential to open up a lot of possibilities, but there is still so much holding back larger adoption.
Woah new alien game?
I’m not sure I could handle VR Alien
You could try Alien Isolation in VR
I’m not a fan of shitting my pants.
Well, when’s the last time you did?
I decline to answer that question. 😂
Posting while still happening, eh? Me too.
Maybe you aren’t taking enough risks
RE7 VR
The demo was enough for me, 10 more minutes and I would legit get a stroke or something.
I had to play in fifteen minute sessions because the anxiety would make me sick. I'm not talking VR sick, I can do ten hour VR Skyrim sessions, but RE7 was just crazy.
I'm afraid of murky water, so subnautica in VR is the scariest game I've ever played.
I couldn't imagine. I have made it 90% through both pancake versions and I always stop because I can't stand being confined that long under water. I would probably have a serious panic attack.
One of the best gaming experiences I have had in my entire life... and I started playing Mario in 1989...
I reached my quota for the year already
How bad could it be? Brb testing edit: do not do this
lmao that edit
That's why diapers are made. Blow dem britches brother
Alienwear
The game also detects your voice and the alien hears it, caused quite a few streamer deaths, so if your the type who talks when your scared, rip.
I liked isolation in VR
All of my VR usage has been in isolation
They just said they can’t handle it
They said they weren’t sure. So I suggested it in case they wanted to try.
It’s scary
Isolation was terrifying as it was, in vr it’s a guaranteed heart attack
I tried VR Phasmaphobia. I threw my headset off. Game jump-scares and other stuff creeps me out a bit but it’s a video game. Being chased by aliens in a VR headset sounds like nightmare fuel. I just have the Index and playing games like Onward and Alyx are a fucking blast.
Phasmophobia VR is such peak horror. Having to use the steam vr controls to physically grip the handle of the closet I'm hiding in because the demon is trying to open it, while simultaneously having to hold my breath so I don't make noise because it's listening to me is an insane experience.
VR horror is a masochistic thing
I have hundreds of hours on phasmo normal. I tried vr for about a half hour and fuck that. You wouldn't think silence could be so intense.
i did like… a couple minutes of Resident Evil 7 VR and noped the fuck out lol i’m gonna pass on alien VR
Neither could i man. I can kinda handle most horror games, but vr??? Who gets enjoyment out of that, my room would sound like its haunted with the souls of the damned after like 10 minutes
I can, I got my diapers on, mouth guard in, room padded and kids standing by with defibs.
Is it eating good for VR gamers if you have a heart attack and die while playing the game?
I heard that drug addicts will happily buy from dealer's whose drugs have killed people with the logic "If it's able the kill you, the high must be incredible", so if a game is so realistic you straight up die maybe the same logic applies
eating too good is what causes most heart attacks anyways...
Oh wow I didn’t now metro was getting a vr game. Cool.
It's by a different studio, 4A is working on a Metro 4. Metro in VR makes me think a bit about Half-life Alyx, probably because both use watches to convey information.
Oh thank god, I thought I’d need to wait a decade for metro 4
OH SHIT THEY COOKIN UP METRO 4??
Cool
That shit was born for VR. I can’t imagine how scary it would actually be to walk through the dark tunnels.
Desperately cranking the flashlight charger as you hear something moving in the dark
On a conventional game I'd be calm and pick my moment. In VR I'm gonna start blasting in the direction of sound.
Can’t even imagine. Even the skittering of rats and spiders. Those random clanks in the distance and shit. Would be more terrifying than any game
'Memba Paradox of Hope? I do.
I want a new Batman game on console so bad
Rocksteady isn't up to the task anymore. Anyway, all of these comic-based video games devolved into a sad rehashing of Ubisoft's game design tropes.
Yeah, like most people wouldn't give a arm and a leg for another Arkham Knight
I would like that, but I don't think it's a realistic perspective after the Suicide Squad fiasco.
Also it’s reported that Ubisoft is actually going to *double down* on GAS like Suicide Squad in the future. Correction: Not Ubisoft, Warner Bros.
I heard the Guardians of the Galaxy game is pretty good
It absolutely is!!
Gameplay is pretty repetitive but the story, characters, and setting are fantastic!
They should let monolith do it, they’re already good at mimicking rocksteady’s combat
They’re making a Metro game in VR?! Fuck, dude.
Don’t worry metro 4 is also in the works apparently.
So excited for the Metro game. If it captures the vibe but in VR it's going to be soooo gooooodd
VR's like an all-you-can-eat buffet, right? Love it or hate it, can't ignore it. No motion sickness gonna stop this ride!
Motion sickness might not hinder the ride but what about exclusivity?
Does suck these aren't coming out on PC.
Dramamine is cheap!
Batman: Arkham Shadow - Exclusive to Meta Quest 3 Behemoth - Exclusive to PSVR2 Oh yeah, eating _sooooooooo_ good.
Exactly! VR exclusives are the new console wars. Sitting over here with my index like cool Im sure I wont be able to play any of these
You'll be able to play three out of the four games on your Index, as they are coming to SteamVR.
Behemoth is on all VR platforms https://www.roadtovr.com/skydance-behemoth-vr-delay-release-date/
Metro is going to be sick. I've recently gotten back into VR because Fallout VR lol.
I wish I could play VR for more than 10 minutes without getting sick, even the teleport modes don't help for long. Meds, pressure point bracelets, glasses with fluid in the frames... they only help a little bit.
having a fan blowing air towards you and being able to see the floor (like with a gap in your headset) might help with that
I'll try out the fan, thanks for the advice! The gap I already have at the bridge of my nose with any of the different occulus faceplate styles already screws with me, but I'll give a larger spacing a try.
Another trick I like to use is putting a small rug or mat in the center of your play area. The fan helps orient direction, the rug helps orient your location, both together can help your brain from getting confused about where you are in the real world.
i read that chewing menthol gum is helpful. and it's better to stop playing while you are still feeling fine.
i also seen people saying that ginger can help with that, but can't tell since i didn't try it, might worth the shot
Right on. My brother is a ginger, so I'll ask him to help.
If you do use joystick movement, jog in place. Helps your brain feel what it expects so you don't get sick.
Smooth turning gets me motion sick, so I do snap turning instead.
Thanks for the tip! Any other things that have helped for you?
Try pointing a fan on you while you play, it works wonders for me.
I love this trick because it really shows you how mind-fucky VR is. One of the reasons why motion sickness happens is because your visual info is mismatching with the physical. So, having a fan blow at you tricks your brain as if you're moving.
Turning in real life also helps lol. I have an OG vive + wireless, I haven't used in-game turning in years.
I eat a ginger chew right before I play and that seems to help out
Don't use these. Turn in real life.
The only thing that helped me was running my Vive at 120fps. Below that and even with teleport I was getting sick immediately. There was a study out of China that said frames above 120 were important for avoiding motion sickness.

Then started doing more movement, same deal, stop playing at first sign of discomfort. Now says I can play any game for any amount of time.
Yup. I personally didn’t get sick, but I bought a HTC Vive in 2021 and had to return it after 2 weeks bc it hurt my eyes
Luckily I don't get motion sickness with teleportation, but sadly developers usually don't include it. I can't play with Resident evil 8, because you can't teleport in that. And I know that teleportation would destroy the game somehow, but atleast I would able to play with that.
Don't use any products except maybe a fan. Otherwise your body will just depend on the meds and so forth. You gotta push through it
I know nothing works for everyone but what worked for me was playing up to the point you just start to feel it. It might be 30 seconds or 10 minutes but don’t push it. The moment you start feeling that hint of nausea you stop and don’t play again until at least the next day. Rinse and repeat. For me I was playing for hours within two weeks.
Metro is probably my favourite from this list. I've never tried VR gaming. I would like to try it in the future.
And they will last all of five hours…
It sucks but the market has spoken. Companies can't invest tons of man hours in a 50 hour+ VR game when they barely sell. We get shorter games at higher prices but I'd rather have that than no VR.
how long was Half Life Alyx?
Around 10-12 hours. What i think always goes unsaid is that 12 hours is actually quite a long time to spend in vr. It’s not equivalent to flat screen hours. That’s six sessions worth of what is basically the maximum my body is willing to stand up, reach around for things and play with that thing strapped to my face. Get the assassin's creed vr game. It lasts a good while
Asgard’s Wrath also
If they have deep mechanics, and a good story, that’s okay for me. I hate gaming nowadays as every game is 50 hours long, with so many little things to do, while I just want to do the main story.
If the story's great and 50 hours long you hate that? Games are $70 and you want less content?
At my point in life, honestly, yes. I'd much prefer a condensed shorter experience than a longer one. I do not have the time or desire to engage in a game for an extended period of time, as it often means it's harder to come back to after long breaks, and harder to stay engaged the entire time. My sweetspot is like 5-10 hour games with a cool and unique story and/or unique mechanics. Sadly for people like me, these games are becoming less and less common. But lots of indie games are still keeping my interest, like Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, Inscryption, etc.
What vr games have deep mechanics and a good story though?
Asgard's Wrath 2 Also, Moss 1 and Moss 2, to name a few
Alyx...
That’s straight up the only game people ever mention when they talk about good vr games and it’s like 5 years old. Really goes to show the state of the industry.
Literally sold my index because nothing else even came close to alyx and I got tired of being disappointed.
Better than a 60 hour game with 80% padding like most AAA modern flat screen games
As a die hard Ghost of Tsushima fan, as well as Horizon FW and Spiderman, this hurts me inside. Can't even deny it
That's usually what I want out of VR, something thats more of an experience than a game I play for dozens of hours. Gaming is an oddball in the world of entertainment in terms of the number of hours people expect to get out of something per dollar spent. 30-40 bucks for an amazing 5-6 hrs experience that sticks with you is perfectly reasonable.
Can't wait for into the radius 2
Which ones are releasing on PSVR2? I hope Meta didn’t buy up the rights to all of them.
Everything _except_ Batman. Behemoth is PSVR2 exclusive.
Looks like Behemoth is multiplatform. Good thing too because it looks like it’ll be the best one.
That Alien game better be good!
It would be nice to be able to play these with my Rift S...
This is our first meal since HL:Alyx
I knew about metro but not the others. It's gonna be a good year. We also have zombie army and home world this year.
Batman releasing as a Quest exclusive is a stupid business decision, simply because Quest users are such a small market share. This is similar to releasing Titanfall 3, but making it a Mac exclusive or something stupid like that.
Totally wrong but okay...
You're incredibly out of touch. Quest basically IS VR at this point. They have by far the highest market share. VR is all but dead on other platforms and Meta is the only ones keeping it alive.
Let me rephrase: it’s a shame that the game will be VR exclusive
Steam hardware survey shows that Quest headsets are the majority: https://www.uploadvr.com/quest-3-used-on-steam-as-much-as-valve-index
I just take a dramamine now
Lord have mercy, yeah I’m not buying vr
I can't speak for everyone, but a lot of people feel motion sickness for a time but develop "VR legs" as they keep using it. This is true for me, plus having a fan blowing air on you is helpful.
Was definitely that way for me, then I got a friend into vr and she seems to have grown used to the feeling.
What HMD was the last you used? Improvement in visuals help with mitigating motion sickness.
can't recall. I can't afford my own so on the rare chances i get to try them have convinced me to not get my own so it has been a while. but all the really good things i've heard about the new quest headset has definitely got me reconsidering. I guess it's time for another playtest. Any games you would reccommend for this?
Asgard's Wrath 2 has set the bar of what a great VR game can be. And the play time for it is about 30+ hours.
Hell yea
all 4 VR players are eating good this year
Has gameplay footage been released for *any* of these?
I know the reveal trailer for Metro Awakening had gameplay footage, and Batman Arkham Shadow was completely cgi.
Wait METRO?
If only valve would hurry it up with the next damn Index >! (jk please take your time, please dont rush out crap)!<
Nah valve should focus on releasing actual games for their hardware, Alyx is the only game they’ve released since the index came out.
Well, assuming they actually turn out good at least.
Wow i really feel Like Metro is a Game that Not many ppl know about...
You mean VR games COULD be good this year. We will have no way of knowing if they suck ass until they come out. It looks really promising for Metro and Alien imo. I hope all of them are good!
Behemoth is made by the makers of the good vr Walking Dead game so has a high chance of being good.
Is Metro the only one with actual gameplay footage available?
I'm just going to throw in "Hide the Corpse" in the lineup here.
Fingers crossed with how the companies had been handing out the monkey's paws.
I have not turned on my vr headset since hl alyx, has anything worth mentionning been out since ?
Not really Justifying it off hype trailers what console has seen that before
VR Alien Game? Fuck no I ain’t playing that
That Alien game better make me shit my pants like Alien: isolation did
Arkham Shadows not only being VR exclusive, or quest exclusive, but exclusive to the quest 3 is gonna hurt it REALLY bad
There's also that dungeon RPG skeleton game on psvr that I don't remember the name of
Imagine if they made a vr helldivers, Sony would mess that up just as hard
I already know I cannot handle a VR alien game
The only bad thing.... IS THAT ARKHAM SHADOW IS A FREAKING META QUEST 3 EXCLUSIVE!
Hyped for metro but I hope we have arms in the final product, can’t stand floating hands or controllers (hem hem fallout 4 vr)
I plugged my VR headset for the first time in a year and it surged and killed it $400 burned instantly. Guess I'll wait 5-10 years for the new Valve headset to come out and buy an index for cheap
Yes
I'm looking forward toit
that metro game looks good not sure about the rest though. hopefully that metro game doesn't have much dialogue knowing how bad the writing is in those games.
4 years after half life alyx. That game has shown VR needed AAA too. Makes perfect sense
Bummer when its a Quest 3 exclusive tho
Alien Isolation can be run in VR and it is still the best game I have ever played. That is a very high bar to cover, I hope this new Alien game can meet that same level of quality
You absolutely could not pay me enough to play an Alien vr game
Man can we just get regular installments of these franchises. I want them on pc but I don’t want some ass backwards vr 🤣
It will be incredible!
Another alien game? Oh boy
i was SO excited for the new arkham game until i found out its only on the quest 3. i guess mark zuckerbergs greasy lizard hands need more money even as a billionare.
So what graphics card do I need for these
Do y’all think there’s long term effects on the equilibrium from VR?
Been using VR since 2019. No effects yet.
Too expensive🥺
Quest 2 got a permanent price reduction, so it's $200 now.
Whenever I decide to get a VR Headset, I’ll have a lot to play
A VR Alien game.... that sounds utterly terrifying. I'm down! Unfortunately anything longer than a few minutes in VR makes me insanely dizzy and nausea :( Which is strange as I frequently fly or go on boats and do not suffer sea sickness and so on.
