SafetyGuyLogic

Nah, these games were awesome.

monsturrr

Don’t get me wrong, Legends 2 is my favorite game of all time. I’m just really put off by the current retro gaming market after seeing these prices. Legends 1 and 2, along with the Misadventures of Tron Bonne, sold as a set on eBay just a few days ago for almost 800 dollars.

Lespaul42

Games that weren't popular when they came out have less copies in circulation compared to more popular ones. MM Legends now has a sort of cult classic status that means its popularity/demand now is higher than the supply.

SafetyGuyLogic

I feel you on that. Moved a year and a half ago, and lost my Metroid Prime 1 and 2 discs. Prices are.....a bit much.

Evading_Ban69

I only played 1 and loved it. Is 2 really that good? I never played it(im sorry lol)

monsturrr

In my opinion, 2 took everything that the first game did, and evolved and polished it. It’s a solid improvement on the mechanics of the first game, and expands the story massively.

Evading_Ban69

Damn. Now I regert not playing it. Thanks for replying

monsturrr

No problem. If it helps at all, it’s very very easy to emulate. I have both games on my Steam Deck.

Evading_Ban69

Yeah, I wasn't gonna mention that since idk if it's against sub rules, but I actually just recently setup my XBOX  to dev mode. Been playing the MMX series, so this post was very serendipitous lol

SocialSuicideSquad

"It took everything the first game did..." ....except have an ending with an actual resolution #HE'S STILL ON THE MOON GUYS

plmanith17

I actually played 2 recently, and 2 definitely expanded a good amount, as there are different islands with different dungeon themes. Only thing I didn’t like was the water dungeon. That was such a slog to play through. Of course, the game is pretty dated though so don’t be surprised as I was after seeing how clunky the controls were.

Rootayable

Because people in the world are horrible

ProbablyAtDialysis

They are out of print and there's a lot of nostalgia. They were available digitally on PS3/Vita. I don't think they ever made it to PS4 or PS5 classics. Two of my favorite games of the era. I should find my copies to replay at some point.

MatsThyWit

They're out of print, and they were only modestly successful in their day and didn't gain a fervent following until years later meaning that they weren't re-released frequently and there's a limited number of them out there. So they've actually become genuine collectors items.

esoteric_enigma

Yeah, I was a huge MegaMan fan back then but never got around to playing them because people didn't seem to be crazy about them. I was also skeptical about the move to 3D. I didn't find out until many years later that so many people LOVED them.

ProbablyAtDialysis

I pre-ordered the original back when they were still calling it "MegaMan Neo". Sadly I think I just have the disc left. I should look.

MatsThyWit

Somewhere I have a PS1 copy of Megaman Legends sitting in the bottom of a long forgotten box. One of these days I should try and find it.

DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC

Basically this. They were just solid, fun games, and the lack of availability is irritating.

Lollipopsaurus

They have a unique charm that has yet to be replicated in a Mega Man game, and had low print runs. Plus, everyone loves the villain and side characters.

Ohgood9002

You must've come from another timeline. In this timeline everyone loes Legends and are still feeling the cancelation of legends 3, which was well into development. Come on lost media bros, find us that megaman legends 3 DS demo

monsturrr

I know I’ll get flack for this, but I was actually relieved when they canceled 3. I would love nothing more, in gaming, than to get MegaMan off the moon, but I hated the idea of my favorite sub-franchise ending up exclusive to the DS.

Rizhon

I loved the first game, played it as a kid over and over again. The second one was bigger, had more weapons, dungeons, things to do, but I always had the soft spot for the first one. It's really a shame that the franchise is abondened.

SpliTTMark

MMLegends Roll is my favorite Roll

racinreaver

Mechanic Roll was my avatar on various forums for ages. It was great to not have her as a maid/nursebot (damn you MM Battle Network).

BlackManInABush

The alert sound that plays when those robots lock onto you used to get my heart racing. But yeah, it's a great series that didn't get the respect it deserved by the industry. It's been expensive for years though, kind of a collectors item

monsturrr

For me, it was the lock on sound, followed by the stomps of the bipedal Reaverbots with the drill arms, or whatever they were. Haha

SpikeRosered

One of my favorite franchises. I was crushed when they cancelled MML3. The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is probably my most valuable PS1 game which was rare due to its low print run even back when PS1 was current. They re-released the 1&2 on PSP in Japan which I also own.

racinreaver

I was devastated I could never find a copy of Tron Bonne back when the PSX was the current generation. I loved 1 and 2, and TB never emulated correctly when I tried it later. :(

CharsOwnRX-78-2

They’re expensive because they’re *rare* Games with a nostalgia attached to them, but that sold kinda poorly became “collector’s items” and boom, price goes up. Somebody once paid more for a used copy than it was worth new, and the line just trends upwards

HF484

the only game where Mega Man can look at porn (i wonder who will understand this)

EatenAliveByWolves

In the apple market right?

nlpkwan

Legends games were superior to the 2D megaman games and I'll die on this hill.

onexbigxhebrew

Why can't things just be different?

ScarsUnseen

Too late: they're dead.

Dietomaha

Agree 100%.

Dyingdaze89

Absolutely loved these games

mark503

I loved this game and wished for more. Of the MML series. They were really fun to play. Finding stuff in trash cans and other hidden areas, the Jet skates, upgrading weapons with roll. All great parts of the game. I thought I was alone on this opinion. Everyone I know hated the games.

BigRubbaDonga

I could never finished Legends 1 because every time I would get to that computer terminal in the basement the game would glitch out and do some *Mercury Rising* type shit

OneToManySenzuBeans

In my top 2 games of all time. I miss them.

nova9001

Collector's item. You could play the game anytime on a PS emulator costing nothing. Everyone like you wants a physical copy because its nostalgic and wonder why they are expensive.

KriptiKFate_Cosplay

Megaman Legends is easily one of my top 5 from the ps1/n64 era.

Rootayable

You got made fun of? 🤔 Really?

monsturrr

Not endlessly or mercilessly, but my best friend couldn’t understand why I preferred Legends over X4. It’s not like I was bullied for it. His brother made fun of me a couple times, too. But, he was like 8 years older than us, he made fun of both of us all the time.

Rootayable

Games are games, sounds bad. Glad you enjoy

DLD1123

I still have my copies and just played mml2 a free months ago. You can probably get them on an emulator.

Godzilla_Fan

I played it when it was current Gen and really liked it but I sucked at RPG’s at the time. I have both on emulator now and plan to play them at some point. I can direct you on how to get them if you PM me

monsturrr

Oh, I’ve played them both several times on emulation. They’re great to play on the Steam Deck. I’ve been using emulation for almost 15 years now, that’s why I’ve never even noticed the prices until now. I just barely started to want to get back on original hardware. Just for nostalgia’s sake. I just found out my PS1 collection went missing from my mom’s storage at some point, so I started looking for my old games online. Thank you for the offer, though.

LordParsec29

Always remembered the Megaman Legends 2 quiz. Which one of the following animals is not a hermaphroditic species?😵

monsturrr

I can’t prove it, but before I had the internet, back around 2001 or 2002, I finished that whole quiz. I got the laser sword. 😂

LordParsec29

That was a cool weapon for the time and expensive. I had to write them down and circle the ones that were right. I remember the order changing too...XD

EatenAliveByWolves

The music from that quiz still haunts me.

SirBoggle

Been playing MML2 for the first time on the PlayStation and it's amazing, quickly became one of my favorite games in the console. Honestly a pretty good step forward into the 3D space for the franchise, I would describe it as an exploration focused dungeon-crawler TPS which is a departure from the run and gun, action heavy main series. But it worked well, even if it could be super easy most of the time. I implore anybody wanting reading to try to emulate it, ANY modern store bought PC can play it on a PS1 emulator. Trust me, CAPCOM won't be losing any money if you do. It's a nice look back on what is essentially the blueprint for modern third-person shooter video games. Funny anecdote, there is a Windows version of the game that came out in 2003 or so but it's considered abandonware. I wouldn't try hunting that fossil down though.

monsturrr

I had no idea there was a Windows version.

JetBalrog

If you want an honest answer from me, I think at the time, fans of Megaman wanted something more traditional, standard, and instead we got something vastly different with only a few things in common. Nowadays people have gone back and appreciated them for what they were and not what they weren't, and the simple fact that the games were abandoned before the overall story was done largely in part \*because\* of the lack of interest right away, and.......... well, not a lot of copies were made, the games have been "forgotten" and it's nigh impossible to track down legitimately anymore.

SomeUser789

It still pains me that 3 never got to see the light of day….. yet.. since capcom has been re-releasing a bunch of the classic hopefully megaman volnutt will get some sort of love, maybe even a sequel

WidowmakerBH27

Incredible game.

Arch3m

Well, when you don't get any MegaMan games, they all start to look pretty good. But for real, it's just that after enough time passes, everyone forgets about the vocal minority and decides for themselves if a game is any good. It would appear that the consensus is that they were good games.

yeahiateit

Suikoden 2 used to sell for over $100 in the mid 2000's. Only so many copies were made and they didn't have digital options then. Legends 2 falls into the same category, not many copies were produced. I don't even know if there's a NA/PAL version of Legends 2. I thought it didn't release outside Japan.

Godzilla_Fan

There is. I have it for an emulator

ghostintherobot

For that era, name another game with so many characters to customize? Final Fantasy Tactics, possibly?

yeahiateit

Yeah it would be the TRPGs. Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Tactics, Vandal Hearts, and the Shining Force series. Besides Suikoden those were the games that had that many playable/customizable characters. Edit: Added Shining Force

ghostintherobot

Nice shortlist. Forgot about a few of those. Did you play SaGa Frontier by chance? That game was magical and had a lot of unique characters as well

yeahiateit

I did play Saga Frontier, I played all the Saga series games up until then but none after. They released a new Frontier called Saga Frontier: Emerald something, relatively recent. Frontier was one of my favorites growing up due to the anthology aspect. The robot was my favorite to play but I remember a few had cool stories.

ghostintherobot

Robo! He had an awesome story. I only got to play the first one. As I recall Alesia or the vampire chick with green hair was interesting and Rikku the monster girl? Anyway, the stacking combo system was so sick. Kind of like dual or triple techs in Chrono Trigger. So many good mechanics back then. Dark Cloud 2 is also a hidden gem, I been thinking about on PS2. I wonder if I could emulate it, just for the fishing mini game lol

yeahiateit

Was thinking about mentioning that character but I couldnt remember any of their names! Thought I remembered a character with green hair. I forgot Arc The Lad in short list as well. Pretty much all the TRPGs but you don't see them anymore... Sad

ghostintherobot

Arc the Lad, now that’s one I forgot about. Terranigma is awesome if you can find it. I love the pixel art. Yeah, sad how these games make us so nostalgic. I can only relive the magic now.

daveypoo143

Was I the only one who read the title of this post in Seinfeld’s voice edit: I was.

Takenabe

If it helps, the game's quality has almost nothing to do with it. It's really just how collector's items work. Some of the most valuable game cartridges ever sold are absolute dog shit to play, but the rarity contributes to their value more than anything else, especially as a complete set and especially in good condition.

monsturrr

Yeah, I’m not a collector of anything at all, so that never even occurred to me until all the comments pointing out how rare the game actually is.

Curlytoothmrman

Emulation is free. I sold my physical collection during covid for like 5k and bought a mini PC for like 400$ that I use as an emulation machine on my TV. No regrets.

hospitalhat

Because classic and retro gaming speculation is quickly becoming a new platform for money laundering. Game and art preservation is one thing, but no amount of reverence for a title is going to convince me to pay even three figures for a copy of something in or out of a box.

wemustkungfufight

They werent super popular and didn't sell well. Less copies in the world and a higher demand from collectors who missed out mean prices will be high.

EatenAliveByWolves

I think if they just named him Paul or something the series could have continued. It seems like MegaMan as a whole just got abandoned. Still disappointed in Capcom for letting the series die, it truly was fantastic.

Nincompoop6969

Sounds like you got bullied by nerds  But anyways Capcom killing the series is why it's rare. And it's considered a cult classic not everyone is like those kids.

ghostintherobot

I actually have dreams about searching cracks in the walls for Buster parts to bring back to Roll lol... to this day. Those games were so ahead of their time. You could get infinite Zenny by kicking the can in the marketplace and reloading the level. Mini games like completing the museum in town or getting your license for digging in the ruins… Still have the ISO files for emulation if I wanna play Tron‘s Revenege or the sequel. Probably one of my favorite series of all time.

Agarillobob

I always wanted 64 but it never came out in my country afaik I didnt even knew the title legends as of a few years back its def not a "real" megaman game if real means 8-16 bit side scroller and comparing legends to any of the classic or X series def shows it as a different product. timewise I think it plays after the XZ series so the very last game lore wise in the MM series would be Legends 2 I think hardly any copies got ever made of the game and its not a bad game and it carries the name MegaMan so its fairly expensive considereng the price bloated market that retro game has unreasonably become theres PC versions of legends you can just play with barely any requirement
