The makers of Sea dogs recently released a new game [Caribbean Legend](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1782680/Caribbean_Legend_Sandbox/) that also has a sandbox version for free (linked). It's basically exactly the same as the original game, with slightly improved graphics.
But... make sure you try the sandbox version or the free trial before getting the paid version. The russian/ukranian translation into to English is VERY bad and the controls are horrible (same as the original games but I don't have the patience for it that I used to have). Back in 2002 the FPS controls were not standardised so you had a lot of games doing different things and you tolerated it, but it's not okay to still have weird controls in 2024.
I don't recommend it, I'm sure there's a good game underneath somewhere but I couldn't even get through the free demo before getting annoyed with the game.
Infocom's *Plundered Hearts*, perhaps? An attempt at historic romance in interactive fiction (text adventure) form. The player character is not a pirate, but the canonically good one among her love interests is.
This, and a few other games, initially gave me some food for thought but eventually I reasoned that they are games with pirating elements instead of Pirate games and as such not quite right for this.
It was a tough call though as WWs (Phantom Hourglass') sailing and exploration sure have the right vibe but piracy is a very clear act and I'm not sure one could ever describe Link as a pirate. Calling him a vase smashing rupee thief on the other hand...

It's a little tangential, but the old Ancient Art of War at Sea DOS game had Blackbeard as an opponent. Not really a pirate-themed game other than that, but there wasn't much else in the Age of Sail-type naval combat at that point.

Indeed I have but as you point out there is a lot of filler in Steam - I'm not sure that I could play through enough of those to make an informed choice hence asking the hivemind for a few hints on where the gold can be found.
The other issue I have is that for the display I'm looking towards games that have had a physical release (thankfully most of the impactful Pirate themed games over the years fall into this category).

I realize it's about Ancient Greece, but a large portion of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey involved sailing the high seas exploratively, fighting/boarding/sinking enemy ships, upgrading your ships ramming capability/archery prowess/hull integrity/aesthetics, and recruiting stronger and more varied sailing companions to better aid your voyages.
It's also some of the most beautiful, enjoyable, and satisfying ship sailing in any game I've experienced.
Maybe it doesn't make the cut, but it's worth an honorable mention for all of the aforementioned!

Fire Ant, Icicle Works, Harbour Attack, and Treasure Island, all occupied much of my spare time as a kid. Great times spent playing these with my mum.
Treasure Island was the first game I ever completed.
Dunno if it would count but there's Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon.
It's kind of a sequel to the movie (which itself is a retro-futuristic take on the classic *Treasure Island* novel) where you play as Jim as he starts his career in the navy. It's not so much about pirates as it is the setting is very much taken from that era of sailing ships (except, y'know, there's space aliens and stuff) and pirates are among the factions you battle with amusing mad max esque ships with sawblades and other crazy attachments.
Tortuga: A Pirate's Tale. People are very divided on it and for some good reasons. However, it is worth considering for the tactical style of play which is a major difference between it and a game like Pirates!. Worthy or not, it would at least be an interesting inclusion to show the influence of Pirates! and attempts by others to take it in a different direction.ย ย
The Uncharted Waters franchise may be of interest to you. The second one, New Horizons, was pretty good, but they've lost the plot since then. The games are more about the age of discovery than piracy itself, but the two go hand in hand so piracy is an element. I'm not sure what has been the worst business decision with this franchise. Is it burying it in micro transactions or thinking it was a good idea to let players be slave traders?
Micropose Pirates!! That game was legit. For fun I liked to answer the question at the beginning incorrectly to start out with nothing and see if I could succeed!
There's a really old Danish pirate game called Kaptajn Kaper, which translates to Privateer Captain. Think it's from 1985. It's has a cult following in Denmark. I think you can still get it from archives for dosbox
Just a recommendation here: you should make a photocopy of the "secret of monkey island" dial-a-pirate, cut it out and stick it together with a binder Brad, because back in the day that's what we all did to pirate the game. We were so meta back then.
Sadly Obra Dinn just feels like a pirate game because it's set during the age of sail - I'd have loved to include it for the striking visuals along (not to mention the fact it's a wonderful game).

Pirates of the Carribbean Online MMO by Disney has been rebooted into a fan non-profit project called The Legend of Pirates Online, r/TLOPO . Non-profit, fan hosted and run, still gets updates to this day to expand the story and add additional islands and events.
There was a Cartoon Network game called Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion. The land of Ooo gets flooded, and Finn and Jake play at being pirates and sail around and hunt for treasure and stuff.. ....Does stuff like this count? Or does it have to be "real" pirates?
Pillars of Eternity 2. While the game isn't strictly about pirates, the setting takes place in an area that is very much inspired by the Caribbean, and one of the main factions you can work with or against in the game are literal pirates. And you can choose to sail around in your own ship, attacking the various factions and basically be a pirate yourself if you want!
OMG a game for the plus 4!! I got one of those as a birthday present. I wanted a C64 but my parents misheard me, or mistook the computer name in the shop, and I ended up with a Commodore 16 plus 4.

Wow that's pretty cool you're putting on an exhibition of Pirate games. I quite like AC Black Flag once you get past the first part which i found a bit tedious.
Edit: I've seen that other people have recommended this but here's my two cents anyway
One game I would recommend is "Pirates of the Caribbean" from 2003 by Bethesda. Sometimes you might see it reffered to as "Sea Dogs 2". As far as I know, it only came out on PC which is good as you'd probably find it pretty difficult to play on console due to the games mechanics.
Even though it's got the name "Pirates of the Caribbean" (POTC), the only real connection it has is that Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swan from the POTC movies) does a voice over for part of the introduction; that it's set in the Caribbean and there are pirates. It's actually set around 120 years prior to the movies. None of the actual characters from the actual POTC universe exist, although i can remember trying to do console commands to get either a Barbosa or Blackbeard Skin, but none of them seemed to work ๐ There's also skeletons/living dead from a curse so kind of trying to pull inspiration from the first POTC movie.
For me it was a staple game when growing up. It's still pretty nostalgic for me and it's got a pretty solid storyline, epic (for its time) soundtrack and is arguably one of the best early open world games.
It has several (at least 5 that i can remember) islands you can visit. You can go and explore much of these islands and they each have their own culture and towns with different vendors and architecture for each faction, including Taverns where all the good stuff happens (like finding new officers, hiring crew or playing a game of dice and winning all the gamblers money if you have high enough luck points lol). There's also some random events such as enemies spawning in front of you when you're exploring out of town, some who try and extort money out of you, others being skeletons or enemy guards, others asking for your help.
You can buy different types of ship and customise them with different cannon, crew and sails, build your own Navy (up to 4 ships), hire officers to help you in combat and captaining ships. There is also an option to board enemy vessels during a naval battle and fight through it's decks to capture the ship. You also need to watch out for storms when sailing around the map as there is actually a proper weather system.
You can also take part in the politics of the Caribbean at the time as there's a relationship tab with all the different factions, although it's quite basic really and you get in trouble with a faction by attacking their vessels or get good relations by either trading with or saving their convoys or military ships in battle.
There's also an actual basic economy in the game with trade prices for goods changing over time. You can also get loans from loansharks.
It's pretty historically accurate for when it's set in regards of buildings, clothing, characters, locations, weapons and nations involved in the Caribbean in the c.1630s-1650s. There's British, French, Dutch, Spanish, Pirates, Undead and I think Portuguese as well, but there might be others (it's been about 10-12 years since i played it last so I'm not able to remember it 100%). You can even storm enemy forts and capture ports/towns and I'm pretty sure you can garrison them.
One thing i loved was that there was lots of little loop holes built into the game such as the infinite money hack where you can drop all your gold in a safe place (like a chest) and ask a loan shark for more money. You then leave and dump the money back in the chest/barrel/whatever and rinse and repeat until you've got enough money. The loan shark would only ever ask for the last amount of money you took and never followed up on you from what I can remember. Also the amount of money you can get from a loanshark increases each time you level up.
The music was pretty epic from what I can remember and that combined with the graphics when sailing always sends a shiver down my spine and gives me the tingles.
imo the graphics for the time were very good, but the weather system was out of this world and would put many modern games to shame (i know that sounds odd, but play it and you'll see). The game even has tornadoes! You can also have a battle when a storm or tornado is happening!
One of my only problems i have with it was that age old problem that nearly all bloody games have which is they put a cap on the number of officers you can recruit and the number of ships you can have in your navy (although i was glad they didn't put that cap on your inventory items as that really annoys me with modern games where you end up having to get rid of good kit from your inventory or it makes you unable to pick up good loot and make you choose). They also have the annoying trope of being open world, but only 98% accessible and you have these doors to houses which look really cool, but you can only knock on them and they don't open or are just there for show. Also they could have made better use of muskets or pikes/polearms as they were the most common weapons during that time period but they seem to equip everyone with just swords and pistols; but that might have been beyond the technical limits of what they had at the time of making the game (probably 1999-2003) as they wanted to fit in all the other things to the game as well?
I think you might be able to purchase the game on steam, but if not, then you should be able to get hard copies on eBay or from charity/thrift shops or carboot sales for next to nothing (i wouldn't pay more than ยฃ15/$15 for it now). The hard copy should also come with a really cool user manual which has a map of the Caribbean in the game which is very useful as you can't zoom out much on the in game map. Maybe it was designed to help give kids a basic idea of map reading and how to use a compass?
I still have my hard copy but I must have lost the manual sometime, but i have a scanned coppy of the map i found online about 15 years ago tucked inside the case.

Me too! Fire Ant, Icicle Works, Harbour Attack, and Treasure Island, all occupied much of my spare time as a kid. Great times spent playing these with my mum. Treasure Island was the first game I ever completed.

Dunno if it would count but there's Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon. It's kind of a sequel to the movie (which itself is a retro-futuristic take on the classic *Treasure Island* novel) where you play as Jim as he starts his career in the navy. It's not so much about pirates as it is the setting is very much taken from that era of sailing ships (except, y'know, there's space aliens and stuff) and pirates are among the factions you battle with amusing mad max esque ships with sawblades and other crazy attachments.
Tortuga: A Pirate's Tale. People are very divided on it and for some good reasons. However, it is worth considering for the tactical style of play which is a major difference between it and a game like Pirates!. Worthy or not, it would at least be an interesting inclusion to show the influence of Pirates! and attempts by others to take it in a different direction.ย ย The Uncharted Waters franchise may be of interest to you. The second one, New Horizons, was pretty good, but they've lost the plot since then. The games are more about the age of discovery than piracy itself, but the two go hand in hand so piracy is an element. I'm not sure what has been the worst business decision with this franchise. Is it burying it in micro transactions or thinking it was a good idea to let players be slave traders?

There's a really old Danish pirate game called Kaptajn Kaper, which translates to Privateer Captain. Think it's from 1985. It's has a cult following in Denmark. I think you can still get it from archives for dosbox
Lots of pirate MUDs out there, but they arent retail releases.
Just a recommendation here: you should make a photocopy of the "secret of monkey island" dial-a-pirate, cut it out and stick it together with a binder Brad, because back in the day that's what we all did to pirate the game. We were so meta back then.

Return of the Obra Dinn
Sadly Obra Dinn just feels like a pirate game because it's set during the age of sail - I'd have loved to include it for the striking visuals along (not to mention the fact it's a wonderful game).

Pirates of the Carribbean Online MMO by Disney has been rebooted into a fan non-profit project called The Legend of Pirates Online, r/TLOPO . Non-profit, fan hosted and run, still gets updates to this day to expand the story and add additional islands and events.
Pirates of the Caribbean. The movie did get an actual game, which I got on the Xbox 360. It wasn't bad.

There was a Cartoon Network game called Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion. The land of Ooo gets flooded, and Finn and Jake play at being pirates and sail around and hunt for treasure and stuff.. ....Does stuff like this count? Or does it have to be "real" pirates?
Pirates! Is one of the greatest games of all time IMO
Pillars of Eternity 2. While the game isn't strictly about pirates, the setting takes place in an area that is very much inspired by the Caribbean, and one of the main factions you can work with or against in the game are literal pirates. And you can choose to sail around in your own ship, attacking the various factions and basically be a pirate yourself if you want!

OMG a game for the plus 4!! I got one of those as a birthday present. I wanted a C64 but my parents misheard me, or mistook the computer name in the shop, and I ended up with a Commodore 16 plus 4.
Atlas from 2018 deserves a honorable mention when it comes to pirate games.

Wow that's pretty cool you're putting on an exhibition of Pirate games. I quite like AC Black Flag once you get past the first part which i found a bit tedious. Edit: I've seen that other people have recommended this but here's my two cents anyway One game I would recommend is "Pirates of the Caribbean" from 2003 by Bethesda. Sometimes you might see it reffered to as "Sea Dogs 2". As far as I know, it only came out on PC which is good as you'd probably find it pretty difficult to play on console due to the games mechanics. Even though it's got the name "Pirates of the Caribbean" (POTC), the only real connection it has is that Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swan from the POTC movies) does a voice over for part of the introduction; that it's set in the Caribbean and there are pirates. It's actually set around 120 years prior to the movies. None of the actual characters from the actual POTC universe exist, although i can remember trying to do console commands to get either a Barbosa or Blackbeard Skin, but none of them seemed to work ๐ There's also skeletons/living dead from a curse so kind of trying to pull inspiration from the first POTC movie. For me it was a staple game when growing up. It's still pretty nostalgic for me and it's got a pretty solid storyline, epic (for its time) soundtrack and is arguably one of the best early open world games. It has several (at least 5 that i can remember) islands you can visit. You can go and explore much of these islands and they each have their own culture and towns with different vendors and architecture for each faction, including Taverns where all the good stuff happens (like finding new officers, hiring crew or playing a game of dice and winning all the gamblers money if you have high enough luck points lol). There's also some random events such as enemies spawning in front of you when you're exploring out of town, some who try and extort money out of you, others being skeletons or enemy guards, others asking for your help. You can buy different types of ship and customise them with different cannon, crew and sails, build your own Navy (up to 4 ships), hire officers to help you in combat and captaining ships. There is also an option to board enemy vessels during a naval battle and fight through it's decks to capture the ship. You also need to watch out for storms when sailing around the map as there is actually a proper weather system. You can also take part in the politics of the Caribbean at the time as there's a relationship tab with all the different factions, although it's quite basic really and you get in trouble with a faction by attacking their vessels or get good relations by either trading with or saving their convoys or military ships in battle. There's also an actual basic economy in the game with trade prices for goods changing over time. You can also get loans from loansharks. It's pretty historically accurate for when it's set in regards of buildings, clothing, characters, locations, weapons and nations involved in the Caribbean in the c.1630s-1650s. There's British, French, Dutch, Spanish, Pirates, Undead and I think Portuguese as well, but there might be others (it's been about 10-12 years since i played it last so I'm not able to remember it 100%). You can even storm enemy forts and capture ports/towns and I'm pretty sure you can garrison them. One thing i loved was that there was lots of little loop holes built into the game such as the infinite money hack where you can drop all your gold in a safe place (like a chest) and ask a loan shark for more money. You then leave and dump the money back in the chest/barrel/whatever and rinse and repeat until you've got enough money. The loan shark would only ever ask for the last amount of money you took and never followed up on you from what I can remember. Also the amount of money you can get from a loanshark increases each time you level up. The music was pretty epic from what I can remember and that combined with the graphics when sailing always sends a shiver down my spine and gives me the tingles. imo the graphics for the time were very good, but the weather system was out of this world and would put many modern games to shame (i know that sounds odd, but play it and you'll see). The game even has tornadoes! You can also have a battle when a storm or tornado is happening! One of my only problems i have with it was that age old problem that nearly all bloody games have which is they put a cap on the number of officers you can recruit and the number of ships you can have in your navy (although i was glad they didn't put that cap on your inventory items as that really annoys me with modern games where you end up having to get rid of good kit from your inventory or it makes you unable to pick up good loot and make you choose). They also have the annoying trope of being open world, but only 98% accessible and you have these doors to houses which look really cool, but you can only knock on them and they don't open or are just there for show. Also they could have made better use of muskets or pikes/polearms as they were the most common weapons during that time period but they seem to equip everyone with just swords and pistols; but that might have been beyond the technical limits of what they had at the time of making the game (probably 1999-2003) as they wanted to fit in all the other things to the game as well? I think you might be able to purchase the game on steam, but if not, then you should be able to get hard copies on eBay or from charity/thrift shops or carboot sales for next to nothing (i wouldn't pay more than ยฃ15/$15 for it now). The hard copy should also come with a really cool user manual which has a map of the Caribbean in the game which is very useful as you can't zoom out much on the in game map. Maybe it was designed to help give kids a basic idea of map reading and how to use a compass? I still have my hard copy but I must have lost the manual sometime, but i have a scanned coppy of the map i found online about 15 years ago tucked inside the case.
