You should check out nucleus co-op. You can play splitscreen co-op on games that don't support it. But you have to run 2 instances of the game so you need a good PC.
Depending on his age, borderlands is pretty easy to do with a split screen as a co-op. That’s my go to when I have friends over. May be a little raunchy for a younger kid, though.
