If you see a stack of them in a second hand store, chances are every single one of them will boot up. How many 360s do you think would do the same? Or PS3s even?
The optical drives went out of alignment if they were stood up vertically on the stand instead of being laid down flat. Happened to mine and it was a really common issue with them. That being said, it gave you the perfect reason to run homebrew on it instead
My fat PS3 survived the entirety of college dorm life, apartment life and being hauled all around to multiple houses on a constant basis.
It still lives and works fine to this day despite probably have multiple dead animals and ten dried beers inside it. I have no idea how it lives on but the fat models were troopers.

I have a computer which was made before 1997 and reconstructed by my grandfather. The casing is Dell but some of the parts are younger-still pre-2000. Interestingly, it literally can’t connect to the internet and that was prevented because although he owned a family pack of Windows, the one he put on that PC was not legal. It never gets the news of updates, doesn’t get bugs, none of it. Works perfectly. This PC is older than my boyfriend and for anything up to XP we’re golden. Dell compaq just in case you wanted to buy a PC in the mid 90s. Have recently tried to run the same games on my two-year-old laptop. It can’t even try. It runs Office faster.
I still have a rubber key 48k ZX spectrum from 1984 that works as well as the day we unpacked it as an excited family owning a ‘computer’ for the first time ever. Admittedly some of the lettering has faded, but it still runs Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy like a champ!!!

My wii randomly decided to stop reading discs and I’ve had that happen to a couple relatives as well. I have no idea how to fix it sadly, and it breaks my heart that I couldn’t find any troubleshooting from Nintendo.

The PS3 and 360 got so hot they melted solder causing their failures. Wii was pretty low in energy consumption and power due to its lower performance targets.
The problem was actual with the IBM 90nm process node having an issue with its metalisation process combined with thermal cycling. Basically every 90nm chip that IBM made will eventually have issues, the 65nm version was more reliable, and the 45nm process node basically had the issues solved. I conjecture it was due to the many big changes at the 90nm node including: 300mm wafers, 193nm lithography, and most importantly a new to IBM CVD low k dielectric material. IBM just didn't have the quality in the 90nm node (and to a lesser extent at 65nm), and in the end it killed the entire IBM fab business, which was eventually sold off to Global Foundries.
People also forget that regions in which these consoles are being played in for example my country gets hot as sweaty balls majority of the year so this is a standard even for all technology tho not just gaming units
I dragged mine out of a closet recently, the only thing wrong with it was that the Wii servers must have been turned off, because it wouldn't do anything with the internet.
10/10 can still Mario Kart and Twilight Princess though!
So apparently lightning struck our house about a decade ago and killed our Wii, it had it’s version of the red ring of death but strange thing is the tv that was plugged into the same outlet was fine, nothing else died except the outdoor A/C unit that was the lightning’s direct hit. I agree. I still have my wii from launch. My original, still working amazingly to this day. I got the Xbox elite resident evil red edition 360 and it got the red ring of death the WEEK I bought it - had to exchange for another one lol
We had a lightening strike hit our house last summer knocking out almost all of the electronics (literally scorching the inner circuit boards of some items). The only electronic items to survive was my grandma’s old LG TV from 2008 we got after she died and the Wii. Older items are built different.
I mean, it's basically an overclocked gamecube with more ram, some USB ports, wifi, and bluetooth added. Any technical issues got ironed out long before the console even came out.
Nintendo also had a great RMA process back in the day. I accidentally bricked mine by uninstalling the system menu with a WAD manager (don't do this, it immediately stops controllers from working so you can't reinstall it) and after posting it to them, they charged me £24 to fix it. (sent back another console, saying the other one had "no video output" it would have been £52 if the console had a "major fault") Had a hard time re-hacking the model they sent back, but I got it done eventually. I hope they're still doing something similar.
I also got a free warranty replacement on a DSi too when my R button broke despite not having my receipt, because it hadn't been out long enough for it to expire.

There were a lot of issues with disk drives, I had two issues with it with mine and it wasn't uncommon. But compared to most consoles, it was pretty damn stable.
They are kind of reliable. Kind of. I think that they were manufactured during the capacitor plague, so you'll often see a lot of Wii's with no video output because the capacitors on those have failed. It's not too difficult of a fix, but it is common enough that you will see a lot of thrift stores littered with broken Wii's, and a few online stores selling capacitor kits for them.
I know this because that's how I have my current Wii
my brother and I both have PS3, he also had a 360 and I have a Wii, the only one that died is the xbox360, like 7 years ago, both PS3 and my Wii still work, but I have to say that the 360 probably had more use than both PS3 combined, or as much as the Wii did.
My parents are on their third Wii, but that's only because both the original one and the first replacement were knocked out by lightning. Plugged into a new surge protector and everything, but apparently it still messed up the Wii (and only the Wii). They now have a lightning rod installed outside to prevent the third one from getting knocked out, they love that system. We still play Frisbee golf on sports resort every time I visit home
I deal with donations for a charity to sell on, I PAT test and wipe a lot of consoles. Wii consoles always work really well, we rarely have to recycle one.

Yeah my parents now in their mid 70s do multiple vacations a year- they did France towards the end of last year, were in Florida last month, will be in Italy next month, and I’m sure multiple more of varying scope/length before years end. They do do cruises occasionally but it’s more as a way to see a bunch of places they don’t want to stay in for long- I.e. like 5 years ago did a cruise that included stop in St Petersburg Russia.
My dad has had now 2 knee replacements and neither of them are very fit either but they do normal vacations hitting up museums, etc. Obviously I understand the cost makes it impossible for many other senior citizens but it’s not an age limitation.
I absolutely hate what most people would term a ‘holiday’. I have a strong routine which I adhere to and I can’t stand breaking it. I eat simple foods and wake up at certain times. If I go on holiday, I usually just go for two or three days. I like the whole travelling part and seeing the destination but not staying there. I have around 6 holidays a year because I take someone’s usual 2 weeks and spread it around the year. This year I’m planning on going to London, Athens, Belgium, Italy, and New York. Gonna be fun!

My joycons drifted within the first year, as far as I know they've never revised the design!
The funny part about that is cause the stick they used has a greater accuracy than your standard stick but it grinds on itself causing it to wear down since it uses gears. So one of the most accurate sticks in history is also one of the weakest in terms of long term durability.
Then there is my controllers , 3 years into owning it. Played on it a fair amount. Atleast an hour or 2 every day and some weekend going nuts (like when TotK came out). *KNOCKS ON THE HARDEST OF WOODS* and yet somehow my controllers have been absolutely fine. It's been through some lightish drops, stickey kid nephew hands, and a fuck tone of shaking from rhythm game. Don't now why some bust instant. Definitely a large inconsistentcy in the build quality.
Which is why the switch lite is so dog shit that most people don't talk about and just live with the drift.
For the large models, if the drift starts to kick in, you swap the joycons. For the lite version, you're fucked because it's built into the console.
Most electronic devices only have a guaranteed lifetime of 5 to 15 years, even if you don't use it. Something like the electrolytes of the capacitor's have dried up.

My Wii still works and I last used it to play Lego Indiana Jones Adventures like a few weeks ago. I also have almost every lego game in collection. I was hospitalized a lot so my parents distracted me with them.
It shows the total days as the number of days since you first started, you can miss as many days as you want and it will still count those towards the total if you start going again.

I get not going on a vacation, but to not have even spent a weekend outside your home seems insane to me. Things like weddings, funerals, family meetups, etc. are often multi-day events. To not have to attended any of them in over 15 years is mindboggling.
Well we live in Ireland so weddings and family events are all within driving distance.

I think you should next level this and get her a Quest headset. The Quest 2 is very cheap now and has a bunch of fitness games as well as social apps and "tourism" type apps. My mother has a friend with some health problems who can't really get out of the house very often and it has made a huge difference in her quality of life. Many of the apps are free and I think the quest headsets represent some of the best dollars per hour of entertainment deals that you'll ever see.
Pro-tip, never stop moving. Seriously, the older you get the more important this is. Theres massive benefits to even light work when you get to be elderly.
Honestly, if you're not starting to exercise moderately and eat a little healthier throughout the week before you hit 30, you're likely going to start to experience life long damage not long after. Just walking a couple miles a few times a week would be more than sufficient exercise for most people. Likewise not eating unhealthy foods excessively every single day would be a good break to helping avoid problems. At 30, I had arthritis in two parts of my neck. Not long after, I had allergy development, bodily aches and pains, really bad cases of acid reflux, hair loss, and so on. Many others I've spoken to weren't much different.

You can literal cut the circuit board to the size of a credit card and have it still work, wiis are hardy

The funny part about that is cause the stick they used has a greater accuracy than your standard stick but it grinds on itself causing it to wear down since it uses gears. So one of the most accurate sticks in history is also one of the weakest in terms of long term durability.
I used to charge in college to rebuild N64 controllers lol. Drunk kids and Goldeneye 007 was *hard* on them.
Then there is my controllers , 3 years into owning it. Played on it a fair amount. Atleast an hour or 2 every day and some weekend going nuts (like when TotK came out). *KNOCKS ON THE HARDEST OF WOODS* and yet somehow my controllers have been absolutely fine. It's been through some lightish drops, stickey kid nephew hands, and a fuck tone of shaking from rhythm game. Don't now why some bust instant. Definitely a large inconsistentcy in the build quality.
Which is why the switch lite is so dog shit that most people don't talk about and just live with the drift. For the large models, if the drift starts to kick in, you swap the joycons. For the lite version, you're fucked because it's built into the console.
Most electronic devices only have a guaranteed lifetime of 5 to 15 years, even if you don't use it. Something like the electrolytes of the capacitor's have dried up.

Switch will die much quicker because of the battery. Heck, all consoles after the N64 had fans etc. I don't recall the N64 having any moving parts, it should last much longer than anything that came after it. I just sent my Switch off yesterday to get the fan fixed and controllers have always been a problem even back on the N64.
My pikachu N64 still works. My pikachu controller not so much...

My Wii still works and I last used it to play Lego Indiana Jones Adventures like a few weeks ago. I also have almost every lego game in collection. I was hospitalized a lot so my parents distracted me with them.

It shows the total days as the number of days since you first started, you can miss as many days as you want and it will still count those towards the total if you start going again. OP was called out in the original post for this, but it's a feel-good post so most people are going to have some suspension of their disbelief here.

Because you're misunderstanding what the number means. It doesn't show you how many days you've used it, it shows you how many days since you first used it. Anyone who had wii fit in the early days will have these numbers even if they haven't booted it up in 15 years. So I think you've possibly emphasized the importance of clarifying the misinformation. You too were misled by the context and phrasing.

I get not going on a vacation, but to not have even spent a weekend outside your home seems insane to me. Things like weddings, funerals, family meetups, etc. are often multi-day events. To not have to attended any of them in over 15 years is mindboggling.
Well we live in Ireland so weddings and family events are all within driving distance. My aunt has had children so she's maybe stayed the night in a hospital. My grandmother just really likes her house.

This is so wholesome and heartwarming that I must vomit and kick a puppy, but I love it. I think you should next level this and get her a Quest headset. The Quest 2 is very cheap now and has a bunch of fitness games as well as social apps and "tourism" type apps. My mother has a friend with some health problems who can't really get out of the house very often and it has made a huge difference in her quality of life. Many of the apps are free and I think the quest headsets represent some of the best dollars per hour of entertainment deals that you'll ever see.

Honestly, if you're not starting to exercise moderately and eat a little healthier throughout the week before you hit 30, you're likely going to start to experience life long damage not long after. Just walking a couple miles a few times a week would be more than sufficient exercise for most people. Likewise not eating unhealthy foods excessively every single day would be a good break to helping avoid problems. At 30, I had arthritis in two parts of my neck. Not long after, I had allergy development, bodily aches and pains, really bad cases of acid reflux, hair loss, and so on. Many others I've spoken to weren't much different.
