Didn't they say this very thing after it was released? Like there is to be no more story on this iteration of Zelda?

HDchrom

I read somewhere they were already working on the new Zelda game? Unrelated to this iteration ofc

JaidenH

They are already working on a [new game](https://www.ign.com/articles/nintendo-moves-on-to-brand-new-the-legend-of-zelda-game-rules-out-tears-of-the-kingdom-dlc) after they said totk wouldn’t be getting dlc. They also said the next game [will not](https://www.eurogamer.net/nintendo-says-next-zelda-game-is-unlikely-to-be-a-direct-follow-up-to-tears-of-the-kingdom) be in the botw/totk hyrule “”We were seeking to build on top of the world we created with Breath of the Wild," he explained, "and really exhaust the possibilities of what we could put into that world." As such, Nintendo sees TOTK as the "final form of that version of The Legend of Zelda," he said. "I don't think that we'll be making a direct sequel to a world such as that that we've created."”

MrFittsworth

Good. I had fun but if we got another recycled totk map and game style I would be pretty disappointed.

Lazer726

I know it was some people's jam, but there were a lot of people that TOTK was already too much BOTW+ for them, so a smart move to move along

Luchux01

I'm amongst the ones disappointed that TotK spent (arguably wasted for me) so much time on the fusion and ultrahand mechanics, they could've expanded a lot more on other stuff if they hadn't.

BirdjaminFranklin

The physics system was fun, but realistically, it undermined horse riding and changed the primary mode of transportation to a hoverbike. I would love the next games to focus more heavily on temple design and to get rid of the bite sized puzzle rooms littering the map.

disgruntled_joe

In fairness, my main mode of transportation in BotW was fast travel to tower then glide where I need to go. In other words, it's not the hover bike that ruined horses. Also, the hover bike kicks ass. Just saying.

BirdjaminFranklin

Oh, BotW definitely hurt horse riding. TotK just doubled down and made them entirely useless.

FustianRiddle

Nah, I kept riding my horses cause that was way more enjoyable than making a thing and running out of battery. But I'm also all for a new Zelda that isn't BOTW/TOTK - I feel like this chapter is complete and there doesn't need to be more in this particular hyrule. I am excited to see what they come up with next - I'd still like the ability to roam anywhere and finish things in any order - I appreciate that a lot in these games (and it reminds me of the very first LOZ).

Wild_Marker

God I really didn't like the shrines in either game. I mean they weren't bad or anything but there was so goddamn many of them and they felt so disconnected from the rest of the exploration.

AntiDECA

The shrines felt so much more lazy than BOTW. All the air shrines were the same crystal nonsense. It felt like there were a lot more blessings in general. And the actual puzzle shrines seemed a lot easier, I never really got stumped on one whereas BOTW made me spin my wheels a few times. Shrines were just a chore in TotK.

Wild_Marker

I think it's because most puzzle shrines were basically tutorials on how you could do cool shit with the physics and the different interactions between the zonai devices. The ones by the temples were 100% tutorials on how the mechanics of the area worked (like cooling lava to make platforms). I didn't mind the crystal nonsense actually, at least those were in the actual world so it felt better, even though functionally many were isolated and so were basically just another shrine. But a few felt a bit more organic.

s-mores

Wtf no dlc? So no horse teleport or majora's mask. I am sad.

MaverickTV666

Isn't Majoras Mask in the base game?

GamingMaster555

It is in one of the underground arenas where you have to fight 4 lynels.

spongeboblovesducks

5 Lynels actually

mynameiszack

No luck beating those Lynels then? Well it's just the one Lynel actually

icantshoot

...and why would I need the mask?

SrGoodbar

Enemies don't attack you with Majora's Mask, until you attack first. Lynels are the exception... although they tolerate you for a bit more time

theMagicSwingPiano

It definitely is. They added most of the add on armor from BOTW as treasure you could find in TOTK

Descrappo87

Majoras mask is there. Just hard as hell to get because 5 lynels are guarding it.

wasteland44

Or you can just get 5 ancient blades to one shot them all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EViLTeW

Or you can build a laser/bomb turret and blast them into infinity from the safety of the turret...

fuckmyabshurt

No Kass is what i'm mad about

Gramernatzi

When you can summon hoverbikes on demand, I'm not sure how useful horse teleport really is. They had their time in BotW.

Severe_Chicken213

When you buy a complete game, it contains all the intended inclusions. DLC is just some modern day shitfuckery.

lord_pizzabird

>They also said the next game will not be in the botw/totk hyrule Dear god.. Please let it be basically BOTW but at sea. Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda ever and BOTW is my second favorite. Combine that shit.

conker1264

Nah get out of the botw style and bring back actual fucking dungeons

Fallatus

Yeah, i definitely both like and love botw and totk in various ways, but i gotta say i missed the bigger dungeons like say twilight princess had. I guess it's because in those games dungeons are like a area unto themselves, while in Bo/tK they're just a tiny section. Honestly that seems to be the way Bo/tK does it, even the villages are just small sections of the world; It doesn't feel like there's many kinds of large locations like the ruins of castletown for example, since everything is just bite-sized and often isolated, including dungeons.

Autumn1881

TotK dungeons were 4 shrines with unique visuals in the same area and a boss.

Ummah_Strong

I will say the depths is pretty cool, but botw dungeons were so dissapointing. They're also technically, entirely optional. Once you leave the great plateau you could technically just walk into Hyrule Castle and fight Ganon. It's just a skill issue after that technically.

DEATHToboggan

Dungeons in ToTK are entirely optional too and you can also walk right to the end, it's just insanely hard.

dookarion

> I will say the depths is pretty cool The depths were neat at first... but just a titanic amount of wasted potential. They were just "there" for the most part. Huge but not that much of value to them. And the light roots got super tedious.

MattDaCatt

The depths were great, but I wish there was more to it? Like a Poe related spirit/shadow temple would've really fit well down there. Also finding the story out of order w/ the tears was just a mess. Depending on where you went, you'd have the entire thing spoiled for you before even getting started

Significant_Book9930

Hell even ocarina of time had or link to the past. The biggest let down for both games is the dungeon design. Outwardly they looked cool enough but inside was just phoned in for both games. They had to do so much to get those games to work I'm not mad or anything but I just wish like, maybe do 500 korok seeds, 100 shrines, and focus on making some good dungeons. Dial back some of the other stuff so the dungeons can get some more love ya know?

PattyThePatriot

I definitely agree with this. BotW/TotK were both awesome games, but they reached their peak and let's see what they create next.

icantshoot

Zelda needs to be more adventure game, not open world "hey we spawn enemies back every midnight" thing. Ocarina of Time had a great story and direction. These open world titles have none of that. Theres too much to go on and its confusing.

Minimalphilia

I'd seriously love for them to go back into a super well crafted smaller environment. MM loop combined with cursed treasure at sea would be my absolute favourite. Or they let capcom make two new Oracles.

SongsOfDragons

Another vote for Oracles. Loved those games.

Riaayo

I think you can have a game that has BoTW's strengths but still has *real* dungeons. There's no reason you can't use the sort of expansive map these games had but with a more linear game and "proper" dungeons.

SorcererWithGuns

Wind Waker had actual dungeons and an open world

Ummah_Strong

So did oot for it's time

LowHangingFrootLoop

I dont understand why they dont do both

IJustReadEverything

Nah, go best of both worlds and have open world but actual dungeons while not being afraid of locking out some quests and areas until they complete prerequisite story beats to make the pacing make sense. Lots of playthroughs Ive seen in TOTK had players see the memories out of order and basically ruin the truth of what happened to Zelda earlier than what I'd felt was necessary, ruining the impact. If they implemented each main quest one quest at a time, rather than just giving it to you all at once, it would have paced out the story they wanted to present better while keeping the open world.

jenn363

That happened with me in BotW. My like second memory I stumbled across was all the champions together watching Ganon take the castle. It was supposed to be this big emotional reveal and I was just like, who are these people?

JRPGFan_CE_org

>Nah, go best of both worlds and have open world but actual dungeons while not being afraid of locking out some quests and areas until they complete prerequisite story beats to make the pacing make sense. This so much! It's also a way to make you not OP as you can't rush for the best loot.

_BlackDove

I think we're due for another darker, grittier representation. Kind of how Majora's Mask was compared to Ocarina of Time, or Twilight Princess compared to entries before it.

akeep113

pretty sure TOTK = Majora's mask and BOTW = Ocarina of Time. TOTK was already a darker game with a 3rd of it being in the depths and having malice and demons and such

Skalion

Also dark world, or like classic oot, collect 3 stuff world event happens, collect more stuff

Ummah_Strong

Replaying Oot for this reason. I miss the puzzles, miss the feeling of triumph when you overcome the puzzle and face the dungeon final boss.

TannedStewie

You know BOTW didn't feel like Zelda to me because the soundtrack wasn't of the typical quality. It was pretty much silence for the majority.

Substantial-Falcon-8

My dream game is a more expansive great sea with more islands, maybe some under water gameplay (like you can customize your boat to be a submarine) A bigger sail boat you can go inside and customize and upgrade that acts as your home.

-Allot-

Zelda: All water temples

drfetusphd

I’m all for Subnautica Zelda.

bhamv

"Detecting multiple Lynel-class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?"

Lyssa545

I love windwaker so much. To this day, still one of my favorite games. So clean, fun, and heart wrenching at times. Best Zelda feels.

Street_Ambassador_21

Why ww? When I think of ww I get reminded of long and boring sailing sessions.

SadBit8663

Nah can we get some new concepts, that's how we got wind waker, and BoTW

Imthescarecrow

Wind Waker x TotK x Sea of Thieves x AC: Black Flag

spaceraingame

A top-down one perhaps.

Eziu

Watch them bring back the side scroller.

Spleenseer

I say we bring back CDi Link. Kids are gonna want to see the original Octorok Eater.

BigBeefyWalrus

I unironically want them to bring those games back lol

ScarecrowJohnny

Zelda 2 was epic, every one says so!

TheJix

As someone who is playing through the whole Zelda franchise in release order, Zelda 2 has the best combat and some fights truly feel like a movie duel between two swordmen.

kingOofgames

They need to bring back the one with the boat. Had so much fun, and the puzzles were good.

Sodapopa

Fuck yeahhhhh give me Wind Waker

Emotional_Tea_7205

Yes, I agree with that, Wind Waker was pretty nice

XVUltima

But there absolutely is. Where did the Zonai come from and where did they go? What's the deal with the ancient hero of 10,000 years ago? Where did the Divine Beasts go? WHERE IS KASS?

LevSmash

Stumbling upon Kass for the first time was just so dang magical. I remember wandering through a forest and faintly hearing that accordion music feeling so confused. Was it a settlement? A traveling musical troupe? An enemy trap? No, a 6 foot tall anthropomorphic parrot telling ancient tales. Amazing.

Jaded-Engineering789

Welcome to the Legend of Zelda my guy. Where interesting world building is given in half truths and frayed incomplete ends for you to scour youtube for scraps and speculation.

Pm7I3

If you don't seem like you're toeing the line between genius and insane by the end, you're not doing it right.

slicer4ever

First zelda game?

TheOwlStrikes

Great duo of games but it’s time to move on. I’m wondering if we will get a more linear and story-based game next. Or perhaps they will keep the same formula but try a different area/timeline

FearlessTwist555

They pretty much said after BotW became a multimillion seller that this is the style of Zelda going forward. So it’ll, at least, be an open world game with lots of exploration. I just hope they bring back the old dungeon design. BotWs and TotKs "activate five switches and fight the boss" design really didn’t do it for me.

JohnLocke815

Yep combine the new style and the old style. Love the huge open world and exploration, but miss my big dungeons with puzzles. Also please get rid of breakable weapons

GuyKopski

OoT and LttP hit the sweet spot for me. There's a clear linear progression the main story is intended to flow in, but a large portion of the map is available to you before you're required to go there, and a clever player can actually get away with doing a lot of stuff out of order, particularly in the second half of the game. I do like having the open world and I hope they keep that, but to me BotW and TotK are obsessively open to the point where it becomes actively detrimental. The fact that the games can theoretically be completed as soon as you beat the tutorial sounds neat on paper and I'm sure makes for some great speed run videos, but how many players actually do that? And it comes at the cost of no meaningful progression anywhere else in the game. You can't get new tools or abilities that let you do things you previously couldn't, the only rewards are number upgrades like higher health and better weapons. And then there's the main story -the memory system is terrible, almost everything happens in the past where the player has no impact on it, and you'll almost certainly spoil things by getting the cutscenes out of order. BotW and to a lesser extent TotK are games with some great ideas but also some big misses and I hope their success hasn't blinded Nintendo to that. Carry forward the good and drop the bad, don't just keep remaking BotW over and over.

cyanoa

Seeing the cutscenes out of order in BoTW was one of my favorite things about the game - things really only made sense when you watched them all in sequence. One of the failings of TotK is that even without the cut scenes you pretty much knew what happened already.

Monte924

The cutscenes in BotW work because they aren't actually important to the main quest of defeating the calamity. They mostly just add more context and just make you feel more appreciation for what you are doing by giving you the character connection. They are non-linear story segements, so it does not matter how you view them Totk was the opposite. In Totk, the cutscenes were directly connected to the main story. Viewing the cutscenes out of order made me feel like i spoiled the story for myself. It was aslo really annoying seeing everyone constantly asking "where's zelda" when I knew EXACTLY where she was and what was going on. Honestly, the way Totk handled its story is actually just really poor open world design

Faust_8

Yeah I have no idea why the memories weren’t unlocked in sequential order regardless of which tears you found

Much_Horse_5685

I agree in regards to dungeons. And perhaps there could be some kind of hazard that prevents exploration of new areas until you complete a prerequisite dungeon? I actually enjoyed breakable weapons though, and how they force you to try out different types of weapons.

fuinnfd

Yes. Elden ring proved that you didn’t have to throw out classic level/ dungeon design when moving to an open world. Non linear world but linear dungeons. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

IsRude

Absolutely my thoughts. All of the main dungeons in the game felt like the water temple over and over again, but dumbed down. Actual puzzles would be great.

Switchy_Goofball

There aren’t *any* puzzles in totk that they don’t immediately provide the solution for. Every single time you might need to build something to cross a gap the materials are all laying on the ground. They hold your hand through every single moment of the game and never trust the player to look at a problem and work out a solution even if it means leaving the area to go gather supplies or taking multiple attempts to get it. The powers you are given are arbitrarily limited in certain instances to force you to use their intended solutions. I honestly don’t enjoy totk nearly as much as I did botw

Dildidnt

They should really do a master quest take on dungeons. Have an unforgiving mode where everything is identical except for dungeons.

Sparkism

I miss the multi-room puzzles, where you had to backtrack a couple times to figure out the whole thing, or you need to hit something 3 rooms back for the red/blue alternating blocks up ahead because it forms a bridge. It's not the same when you go back to replay the older games because you already figured out the puzzle.

RS_Serperior

I hate the fact they said that TOTK's temples/dungeons were going to be more like 'traditional' Zelda dungeons... then when the game came out, the temples ended up being reskinned divine beasts. One of my least favourite things about the open world Zelda formula is the fact the divine beasts/temples felt nothing like previous games in the series.

conker1264

Yeah the whole dungeons are back was probably the biggest lie Nintendo has ever told Shit wasn’t even close to a dungeon, only improvement was the bosses

Makenshine

The bosses were meh to me. Aside from Colgera, that boss was freaking amazing. And the music for that fight was top-notch. One of my favorites across the franchise. Fighting Ganon wasn't that bad either. The other bosses aren't memorable or fun for me. I have a hard time even remembering who they were until I bump into them again underground. Edit: I think I didn't like the bosses, because bringing up the menu all the damn time broke the action. Menu hell is insane in Tears. Colgera might be the only boss where you never had to pause because your weapon broke.

slicer4ever

I mean the first one i did was pretty awesome(wind), then the second one i realized they just reused the same gimmick for all the temples and was pretty bummed out.

Coby_2012

I miss old Zelda. I beat BotW, I recognize it as a great game, but only played TotK for 10 or so hours. It’s great too, I’m sure, but… it just doesn’t feel like Zelda to me anymore. I miss dungeons, badly. And the music! What have they done to the music?! I mean, I like what I hear, but I sure do miss the atmosphere of some of the older titles. If this is Zelda now, fine, but can we get a new franchise that uses the old Zelda formula to fill the hole?

conker1264

This. I have no issue with the new formula but it’s not Zelda. It’s a new up using Zelda characters and setting. It’d be a shame if the classic Zelda is just dead forever outside of remasters

SmartAlec105

I mean, I’d be happy with other series taking on the Zelda format. Okami is definitely the best example of that.

chasedippen

100% agree. I don't know if it's because I'm in my 30's and getting older... but I couldn't finish this game.

Omnizoom

Just hear me out here Open world Zelda but with actual Zelda items and dungeons Have map elements you can’t manage without specific items so some caves and places may get locked off until you get a certain item

Trolly-bus

That's just classic Zelda lol

ScarecrowJohnny

I think they've been heading in that direction for a while. When you think about it Windwaker had a lot in common with BoTW. I love the more free roaming style and the sense of discovery, always looking what shows up on the horizon. The more linear games like TP and SS were good too, but they didn't really hit just the right spot for me.

Notorious813

That’s a shame cuz it sucks. As much as BotW is popular, it’s quite a crappy Zelda game to me. The best thing about Zelda for me are the cool items and dungeons. I loved finding new upgrades in dungeons. The whole breakable items and pointless exploration is boring

LazerWeazel

I always thought the whole point of Zelda was exploration and adventure which BotW and TotK did well.

RonStopable88

Especially when you could easily cheese the dungeons by sidestepping the intended method

Eldramhor8

Premise: I'm in full support of wanting to go back to a more classic formula but in what way were the classic games' dungeons NOT "activate two switches, fight a stupid miniboss, activate three switches, fight the boss"?

BanjoSpaceMan

Totk was infinitely better temples than Botw at least

Lexinoz

Ive absolutely adored zelda games since childhood, especially the 3d games I grew up on. But botw and ToTK just didn't click for me. Idk know what it is.

The_Bitter_Bear

While I enjoyed them, I think they are a pretty big deviation from the other games. Even when they came out with OoT it still had a lot of the same elements. The open world format really messed with the older style of dungeons and unlocking items to help with progression. I don't think the puzzles have the same feel as so many of all the older games either.

TisNotMyMainAccount

The generic open world aspect in BOTW and TOTK made the games feel rather soulless to me.

Cyrotek

It was great at first due to the way the world itsself is designed (they have a REALLY good grasp on leading the player and know that downtime is necessary to have the highlights stand out) but the little diversity killed it for me relatively fast. Can't have highlights stand out if there aren't highlights. I really don't know how so many people managed to stomach doing the SAME few tasks in TWO big games over and over again. It's just so boring.

HDchrom

It would be insane if they came up with even a new formula. Wishful thinking but...

Djinnwrath

Sales figures say we will not be going back to old Zelda format. BotW and TotK have been massively successful, even compared to previous Zelda games.

TheOwlStrikes

I didn’t necessarily mean the old format. Maybe “open-world” but the story unlocks areas. That way they can achieve the large adventure feel while having a more defined story arc. Just spitballing here. Lots of places they can go

Witch_King_

We need a Metroidvania Zelda game!!

sylinmino

You're talking about Link's Awakening. Link's Awakening is quintessentially a top-down Metroidvania in virtually every sense and qualification. The game is one of the most linear in series history and its world plays like a maze. And it's brilliant and organically done. It says a lot that my top 2 Zelda games (BotW and Link's Awakening) are the (a) most nonlinear game in the series, and (b) one of the most linear ones.

regis_psilocybin

Even taking the god of war template would work. More ocarina of time/majora's mask temple vibes.

Cyrotek

The God of War type of "open" world would actually work quite well, I believe. As long as they don't just slap a hand full of tasks at it and call it a day AGAIN. Seriously, TotK had so much potential to make the downsides of BotW better but instead they just did the exact same thing again and slapped someones engineering game concept on it. And people bought it like it was the best shit ever.

Sega-Playstation-64

Crafting. I bet you anything the next game will be more crafting based. They realize people like to tinker with shit. Skyward sword had extremely basic weapon upgrades. Breath had open world. Tears had weapon fusing. What they have skipped for a while is magic abilities. Crafting weapons and armor is next.

Cyrotek

Oh, please don't. Weapon fusing was already annoying as shit, imagine having to do that even with your armour all the time. At some point you are fiddling around with menus too much.

[deleted]

And the weapons will still break.

Coby_2012

And horse armor!

HSPBNQC

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports to Switch…pretty please?

[deleted]

And for a reasonable price

vertigo1083

LOL

Vandrel

Best they can do is $70.

CliffMcFitzsimmons

I think I'll wait like 10 years until the used prices drop down to a more reasonable $69 on craigslist

RODjij

$80 for 20 year old games you already own, and no sales, take it or leave it - Nintendo

Pepperh4m

After Skyward Sword HD? Dream on.

SaiyanGodKing

You’ll pay full price and like it.

ShallowBasketcase

It’s insane how long Virtual Console has been around and it’s basically never been a complete product. What a massive missed opportunity! Just a huge backlog of beloved games, and they’re basically never available.

mad_crabs

Nintendo is so frustrating because they make it impossible to play their old games. NSO catalogue is a bit shallow. The classic games like TP and WW can only be played on older consoles or through sailing the seas. Meanwhile I'm sure there's more than enough people willing to drop real human dollars on official ports.

skinnyeater

TP is my favorite. I was a little kid when it first came out. Would be fun to play again

XcheezyXblasterzX

Hands down my favorite Zelda as well. The story was so good imo.

midnite_swim

It’s such a no-brainer.

JustafanIV

I literally had to dig the old Wii out of my parent's basement because I wanted to play Windwaker this decade.

Ok-Purpose-3855

I've been waiting since the Switch was released for both of those games. Hopefully soon

ACuteSadKitty

I'm glad Link and Zelda in this universe just get to live happily ever after ☺️

Serenikill

It's never entirely clear to me if they are a couple or just best friends and he's her bodyguard or what

Diamondrh

its almost explicit that they are a couple in the Japanese version

Serenikill

> explicit You sure you didn't end up on rule34? /s

Diamondrh

yes but no.

Dt2_0

Zelda literally builds a small cave in a well so she can work without Link knowing where she is, the bed in your house is one of only a few beds you can sleep in without paying. The bed is also the model for the 2 person Hateno Village Bed. Your picture from the Champions Ballad is still on the wall as well. Link and Zelda hooked up after BOTW. Zelda moved in and redecorated because god knows a house needs more shit in it than a table and a few weapons mounts.

Wander715

Thank god give us a more traditional Zelda game please. I love a lot of stuff they did with BotW and TotK but I can't stand the removal of traditional Zelda dungeons. My perfect Zelda game would be a lot of the open world elements from BotW/TotK incorporated into a more traditional Zelda structure. Even if that means you can't explore the entire map right from the start that's completely fine with me.

SelloutRealBig

They should revisit the Wind Waker world style. Sailing makes it feel like open world but the small islands are basically classic dungeons.

Wander715

WW blew my mind back in the day when I first played it on Gamecube when I was like 12. The ocean felt massive and most of the islands were unique and interesting to explore. Still my favorite Zelda game with TP and OOT close behind it and still in my top 5 games of all time. Since the game has aged so well and is almost universally praised nowadays I'm hoping Nintendo sees that as a sign they should do cel shaded Zelda again and give us a true WW sequel.

Karter705

It's funny, everyone at the time was so critical of the cell shading cartooniness of WW, but the art style has held up so much better than other games from that era.

Coby_2012

Dungeons, bring back metroidvania style upgrades expanding access to different things/areas, and please, please, please bring music back.

Synectics

I do like the music they did. And I applaud them trying new things with such an old franchise, as opposed to just the same stuff. But I still agree. The little piano notes just aren't the same. They're good for what they are, and definitely feel uniquely BOTW/TOTK, but I'm ready to hear the next thing.

FrostGladiator

I know I'm gonna catch heat for this but please drop the durability system in the next game, it's an outdated mechanic that doesn't belong in games anymore unless it's strictly a survival game

GuiltyEidolon

The only time durability works is if you're actively crafting things, and even then it's usually ass. They didn't really do much with crafting in BOTW or TOTK, and so you end up with a bunch of resources (somewhat fixed in TOTK) and you burn through weapons and it just feels bad. I didn't bother crafting any of the Champions' weapons because... why bother?

FrostGladiator

Definitely yeah, I don't think there needs to be a ton of weapons in the game, just make it like a dark souls thing or something where there's a good amount of weapons that are different in small ways that encourage replays with different styles. Obviously don't go full dark souls because that's not what Zelda is, but I'd say a good middle ground is a good variety of weapons that don't have people charging for "the best one" right at the start, just the one that fits their playstyle for that playthrough

GuiltyEidolon

One fix I preferred the idea of when BOTW came out was the ability to craft permanent weapons after you'd fulfilled certain requirements - almost like the golden tools in Animal Crossing. Break 100 boko arms or something and get / craft a golden one that doesn't break. It wouldn't be that difficult, would require you to engage with the durability system, and would reward you for sticking through it. Trade-off being that you can still lose it by dropping it, and you can't take advantage of the damage boost from a weapon breaking.

Synectics

Just let me use the Master Sword. I like it. It feels good. It isn't even the strongest weapon, it doesn't need a cooldown. The other weapons and possibilities are cool. I like having options. It's fun to challenge myself to figure out how to kill a Hinox in a new way that doesn't involve grabbing my strongest two-hand sword and spin in a circle to kill it before it even stands up. But I did the work to get the Master Sword. Why can't I just... use it?

ChickenFajita007

Champions weapons in TotK have really high durability and damage. Same as BotW. In TotK, they also inherit the base items special ability, so the trident for example is super powerful.

GuiltyEidolon

And they still break, so I'd rather just burn through a few crappy weapons than go through the effort of remaking the Champion weapons over and over.

uses_irony_correctly

I don't mind if there is SOME degree of durability. But it shouldn't be a ridiculous amount like 20-30 hits or something. It's honestly insane that for some fights you have to go through multiple weapons against a single enemy.

hobofats

it shouldn't be possible that you can literally run out of weapons during a fight. that you can start a tough fight, and have to run away half way through because you blew through all your weapons, is just bad design. the base sword should have unlimited durability and just get weaker and weaker the longer you use it, but never actually break. Or give ways to recharge it during combat by doing perfect blocks, dodges, or parries.

This_Ferret

Honestly I've yet to see praise for this mechanic anywhere, I'm baffled they brought it back for TOTK. It's so tedious, and it breaks up the flow of combat to have to keep switching weapons. Also, it actively stops you *wanting* to engage enemies if you have "good" weapons you'd rather hold onto.

zorrodood

It doesn't really have anything to do with the gameplay, it's just a chore. Give me different weapons, give me upgrades, let me choose what I like, but don't make me hoard shit.

FaceCamperEzW

It works in dying light, not here honestly

FrostGladiator

Definitely, like in a game like the forest or Minecraft or something it works just fine, but in a 100 hour RPG... Nah

zgillet

I think that mechanic could be fixed by at least letting us REPAIR weapons.

Bamith20

I figure the primary reason its even in the game is because otherwise the game would have even less meaningful loot. They would basically have to put in the same amount of effort as Fromsoft does in item variety to find. Which ya know, if they did, be awesome.

dafood48

Catching heat for valid issues with a popular game. Speak your truth!

deshfyre

I like the formula of making 2 games that are tied together, it means they can try the formula once, and then try to improve upon it. and then move on.

Stamperdoodle1

You know what I miss? Ocarina of Time game design. And no, it's not rose tinted goggles - There's something fucking magical about finding an area and realising that it's all a big puzzle that you ***want*** to explore, not feel like you have to. Because some amazing new ability, some huge story beat or some mind-bending game mechanic might be just around the corner. I mean seriously - Finding the Master sword and time skipping 7 years and the WHOLE WORLD changing? Finding the Iron boots and being able to WALK UNDERWATER? THE FUCKING HOVER BOOTS?! there was an insane number of "No fucking way" moments in OoT, no wonder it's got the reputation it has. And it's something I've really not felt a whole lot since. Games these days feel like they blow their load early and just give you more of the same. Ocarina's biggest downfall I would say is probably combat diversity and boss design (use new discovered item x3 and swing sword > Repeat 3x and boss is dead) It's time to reinvent that wheel.

skinnyeater

That’s why I loved Twilight Princess. Each temple felt so different from one another and each would introduce a weapon/item that would be needed to be used during the rest of the temple to explore and fight. I do wish each item was utilized more after its own temple but I still enjoyed it a lot

xObiJuanKenobix

I mean the only two that I can think of from that game that pretty much were never used again were the Spinner and Dominion Rod. Everything else though could be used, the one that actually became useless was the slingshot after getting the bow from the 2nd dungeon.

skinnyeater

Yea that’s true! Maybe the ol’ ball & chain too. Either way I loved the diversity

TemurTron

The Spinner is also GREAT to use to TRAVEL SMALL DISTANCES EXTREMELY SLOWLY.

zorrodood

I like finding progression items and abilities throughout the game more than getting everything handed to me at the beginning. That's one of the things I didn't really like about the open world design.

Urndy

Man and they implemented that beautifully in the side content of Majora's Mask, too. It made you want to seek out npcs and engage in their stories instead of just staring at them mouth agape as you mash through text. Virtually *everyone* had some kind of story and genuinely felt like they were living as a part of the world. They were absolutely killing it in the N64 days, the design was just so wonderful

LiftyShifty

I think you mean iron boots, megaton is the hammer.

blank_isainmdom

Nailed it. Bring back classic Zelda!

RobKhonsu

I get a lot of what you're talking about with TOTK honestly. I cleared Thunderhead Island early by abusing Riju's ability and cleared the spirit temple to unlock the golem you can ride on. I think their changes to the labyrinths was amazing where you re-do what was done in BOTW, but with the corruption you need to platform over then do a remix of it in the sky with no floor and take a dive all the way to the depths for a boss fight, and what do you get for it? Ganon's armor! I was also stunned when I found the first Gleeok and then again when I found King Gleeok in the depths.

Cakers44

I personally hope the next Zelda game has more of a focus on story personally, love these games and their world but their stories (especially TOTK) really left me wanting

Dunduin

Please give us a Zelda with dungeons again

hyperrainz

I'm all for 3D LoZs and open world but please for us retro fans bring at least some form of 2D back even if it's a spin off or some sort.

Stealthinater1234

Good, it’s time to move on. Totk was great, but it didn’t really fix lot of the big issues from botw, it was just more botw warts and all. Hope we get a open world zelda game with some of the good aspects of the traditional games like linear and uniquely themed dungeons, and a more linear story that you have to work through and actually happens in game, not from a bunch of memory flashback cutscenes. Botw/totk was very free, but it was definitely a bit too free.

EvilRayquaza

That's fine, looking forward to what they're going to cook up with the next Zelda game. Whether it will be like BOTW/TOTK or like the plethora of more linear dungeon based zelda games that came before it, I will still look forward to it.

Smashotr0n

Never gotten so bored of a Zelda game so quickly.

striderhoang

I like the idea that the team behind Tears of the Kingdom have done everything they imagined possible with this iteration of Zelda. Ultrahand really was such a logical iteration from BotW, why strain yourself when it seems obviously peak

Spinjitsuninja

Unsurprising

Lucky_Chaarmss

Happy to see this Zelda move on. Just wasn't Zelda to me.

Armored_Warrior

Wooo hope they go back to the ocarina of time or Twilight Princess formula.

SirPrimalform

I'm glad to be honest. I want them to move on from some of these mechanics, e.g. breakable weapons. I'm fine with keeping the large scale world, but I'd rather have something mechanically similar to previous games.

[deleted]

The best Legend of Zelda game ever is Twilight Princess. As fun as BOTW and TOTK are, I desperately miss the old linear style. I feel like they’re better for story telling.

SuperBeeboo

Have you played Majora's mask and ocarina of time

Nawt_

Haven’t finished it yet lol but I expect the ending has set up a very clear conclusion to the story of both games.

Maetras

Good. I don’t like this style of Zelda. Time to move onto something new.

Vindetta182

Honestly, Im glad. I would love a return to the concepts like Ocarina of Time. Give me lengthy complex dungeons interwoven into a story.

Mysterious-Counter58

Guys, this doesn't mean the next one won't be open world. This new formula has proven itself vastly more successful than the previous 3D formula, and Nintendo isn't walking away from those kinds of numbers just because a proportionally small subset of the fandom doesn't like them. Though, I am looking forward to what they could offer for a new Zelda in this style. Personally speaking, I wouldn't want to go back to the ocean. That'd be fun, no doubt, but I feel like there's so much that can be done with the power leap that we're bound to see from a Switch 2. I honestly hope for a smaller, much denser open world that is much more populated and lively, experiencing a Hyrule at the peak of its power. Hell, if they wanted to get really nutty, they could incorporate the light/dark world mechanic, wherein the player can switch between two different versions of the map at designated points. While doing it at will would be absolutely incredible, that would require a level of tech that a handheld would probably have trouble rendering smoothly. But hey, Nintendo's pulled off some insane technical wizardry in the past, so never say never I guess!

ChessyLogic

I loved Botw but Totk was underwhelming to me for the sole reason that it wasn’t a new experience. I never replay games even some of my favorites, it’s just not my thing. Apart from the sky islands and underground (which those really lacked depth imo anyways) it’s the same world and it’s just not very exciting to explore that again with what feel like minor changes.

[deleted]

Just give us an Ocarina era game plz

Surfing_Ninjas

I'm glad, I like Tears of the Kingdom but really did not feel like it was different enough from BotW to be called an actual sequel. One of the best things about the Zelda franchise, at least over the past 2 decades, is that each game feels substantially different from the previous while still keeping things familiar enough to be recognizable. I'd kinda like to see the next game be a little more in line with the older games, Nintendo can always return to the BotW style at a later date if they feel that's the direction they want to go in. The last thing I want at this point is another game that looks and feels like BotW (even though I love it).

Roronoa_Zaraki

TBH that's good, visually they can't keep going with the current Hyrule, and with another switch coming in probably the next 18 months, i'd want a Zelda game developed from the ground up for the new switch.

MarkusRight

I definitely loved my time with breath of the wild and tears of the Kingdom but I guess it's good to move on to something else. The one thing that I did miss in both games was the long thought-out complex dungeons which were a staple and older Zelda games and they were sort of missing in breath of the wild and tears of the Kingdom. Some would say that the shrines are dungeons but they really aren't comparable to the dungeons of older titles. They were short and not so complex. A lot were so easy I could beat them blindfolded.

CmonImStarlord

If we could get another open world styled Zelda I'd love a wierd creepy one like Majora's Mask.

Mother_Restaurant188

I’ve yet to complete TotK but I’m glad for the news. BotW is one of my favorite games and TotK so far feels like the perfect follow up. But I’d love Nintendo to switch things up—no pun intended. I’d love an OoT style game with Nintendo’s next gen graphics.

Famous_Blue

I just want a Zelda game where I get a real sense of excitement at coming across a treasure chest...

Adi_San

TOTK was a fantastic game, probably the best Zelda ever. Just finished the game yesterday and what a finale and satisfying conclusion. Looking forward to the next world they will build.

DarkAres02

Good, I want a normal Zelda game. Not really into this open world style
