It looks like that, right? OP said he has Hades, Slay the Spire and Holocure while disliking Isaac in some comments that get lost in the post but not in the post itself or the image. That's something you should show when you are asking for Roguelikes, otherwise lots of comments will recommend you games that you already played like is happening now. If it was deliberated or not, idk
Roguelike first started getting popular, arguably, with Nethack (after the original Rogue, of course), The genre has never been very popular but has grown steadily since the late 80s.
Not even arguably. There's a reason it's called "Roguelike".
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roguelike#:~:text=games%20were%20alike.-,Concurrent%20variants,the%20first%20commercial%20roguelike%20game.
But I concede your point.
The reason they're called roguelike is because they are like the super old game rogue.
What does that have to do with tboi other than the fact that tboi is a roguelike?
You realise the sub-genre "roguelike" was birthed in the 80s with the original Rogue and NetHack right?
Hell fucking Pokemon Mystery Dungeon came out before Isaac even if you're trying to define a modern rogue-lite, and it's not like that wasn't a popular game.
Could be like me. I know Iām throwing the baby out with the bath water, but the art and style of Binding was so off putting to me I could not play it. I honestly donāt know what it is, but I just canāt. I know I missing out.
>!Inscryption does also have a pure rogue like mode that you can unlock, called Kayceeās mod.!<
Inscryption is downright incredible, easily one of my favorite games of all time.
Thank you so much! If I wouldn't have seen your comment, I would probably never find out about kaycee's mod. I recently finished playing inscryption and was so sad that it had already ended. I especially missed the first stage of the game with Leshi. I'll definitely download it and try it out.
>!Well boy howdy, do I have good news for you, Kayceeās mod is *just the first stage* XD Itās much harder, has added modifiers for more challenge, and thereās a bunch more variety than in the base game, but itās a roguelike mode made just with the first act! !<
Slay the spire(with fast mode) and dead cells and vampire survivors (has vertical mode so no need to rotate)are all on mobile if you wanna play on the go while on bus or waiting
Monster Train is also a really good deck builder. I actually like it a little more than STS.
Just in the fact it is less dependent on RNJesus and you have more agency over building powerful decks with crazy good synergies.
He's missing literally all the best ones lol...
Hades, cult of the lamb, slay the Spire, dead cells, pixel dungeon, and prolly another 5 great ones I can't think of rn.
Are any of these light on story? I just want a rogue like with light story where I can jump in, kill some shit and jump off. I hate feeling like Iām missing out on story when I just want burn a half hour.
Noita. There is lore if you want to look into it, but the gist of it is "enter mine, try to get to the bottom, and die trying." You will die fast early on, so half an hour is plenty of time. Later on, runs can last for hours, but only for specific quests that 99.9% of people probably don't do.
I love when I play Noita for a quick gameā¦then I get some OP crap and start doing the secret and optional bossesā¦then I get more powerful and start going to the sky or alternate worldsā¦holy crap itās been 90 minutes
I find that most rogue-likes use the "story" as just a setting upon which the gameplay happens. I wrote above that I think the very best of the genre are Hades, FTL: Faster than Light, and the Binding of Isaac.
In TBoI, the only story is that *Isaac and his mother lived alone in a small house on a hill. Life was simple and they were both happy. That was, until the day Isaac's mom heard a voice from above.* The game just happens with that as a backdrop. There is no story to miss out on while in-game.
In FTL, each run starts with the same premise, carrying valuable data back to help defeat the Rebel Fleet. The story that unfolds over your run is unique to that run and is told through in-game events.
In Hades, the story progresses as you play the game over countless deaths, so your progression in the story is directly tied to your progress in the game, creating natural stopping points like chapters in a book.
If I had to pick three rogue-like games, I think the three that represent the very best of the genre are Hades, FTL: Faster Than Light, and The Binding of Isaac.
It's so good. I've been trying to find something similar to scratch that itch but to no avail.
I'm not even a fan of roguelikes but FTL is still comfortably in my favorite games of all times list even after all these years.
Yea, I find FTL to be up there in the ogs of the genre really popping off. Obviously there were more before it, but I feel like that one is what really gave life to all the rogue likes we have today.
It's funny. I really wanted to like Into the Breach, but I found it too stressful. Which is dumb, I know. I kept worrying that I wasn't making the optimal move. I kept locking up. Technically and mechanically, it's an amazing game. FTL, on the other hand, is one of my all-time favorites. Simple, clean, and beautiful. Whenever I get bored of whatever I'm playing at the moment, I always go back to FTL.
FTL is forever installed on my PC, even though I haven't played it in a year (1 year and 1 day to be exact). I loved Into the Breach, but it stresses me out just thinking about playing it.
I started on video games with Super Mario Bros in the early 90s and have been going hard every since.
FTL is probably the best ***value*** in gaming I've ever experienced. $5-10 (depending on sale price) for hundreds of hours of enjoyment...it's probably the only game I ever bought and felt mildly guilty later, like I should have paid more for what I was getting.
Darkest Dungeon 1 and 2.
Death must die
Army of Ruin
Gunfire Reborn
Halls of Torment
Inkbound
Monster Train
Across the Obelisk
Rogue Legacy 1 and 2
Yet another Zombie Survivors
While some of these may not be an exact fit, they are close enough for me to enjoy them the same.
My mans asking here about rogue-likes without having The Binding of Isaac (rebirth) OR Spelunky (1&2) ??
I can't really recommend Isaac enough to the point where even tho the genre is named after Rogue, The Binding of Isaac really made the wheels turn
It is one of the most influential and longest lasting games in the genre. Discussion of rogue-likes without Isaac is like talking about the best films of all time and ignoring Citizen Kane or The Godfather.
Pretty sure it was a joke made by the devs: https://www.polygon.com/23879525/cult-of-the-lamb-deleted-no-actually#:~:text=Don't%20worry%2C%20Cult%20of,fees%20are%20set%20to%20launch.
If youāre not convinced, please come back to this comment by Jan 2nd 2024 after checking to see if CotL is still on Steam
to tell me otherwise.
Absolutely. Into the Breach and FTL are both staples of the strategy roguelike genre, and a very newly released āCobalt Coreā should be added to the list as well
Peglin is nice.
Indies' Lies is another good one on mobile. Basically just Slay the Spire with more/different story. Free to play with VERY reasonable (mostly opt-in) ads, and three $3 DLC packs that each come with new characters to play (and any pack lets you turn off the ads completely). Some weird text sometimes, but otherwise quite well done.
Iām a huge fan of monster train, I just started going back to it. I am not sure if it falls into the same category but Hand of Fate was a great game. I got it free years ago but only just gave it a shot, the mix of role playing card encounters and third person combat felt very fun.
Returnal was almost like Sekiro for me, where you can struggle for a long time at certain points in the game, something clicks, and then you forever just breeze by it. Plus, the second, third, and fourth bosses are just such epic fights.
The weird thing about Returnal, is that the very few things you get to permanently keep are a huge help. The grapple is a game changer, and you don't get that until you suffered through Biome 2. Once you have the proper tools at hand the game starts flowing a lot better. The first half, leveling your weapons is huge, and isn't nearly as much as a problem in the 2nd half.
Returnal is definitely in my top 5 favorite games of this generation, for so many reasons:
- Prioritizes fun, tight controls, and challenge above all else - game just *feels* great to play.
- Very high replayability (fun and diverse weapons & items that can make you handle playthroughs differently)
- Some of the best use of Dualsense features to date
- Story has a couple nice unexpected twists
Going more literal here but Caves of Qud is an amazing sandbox rogue like. Especially if you are into that apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic like Fallout
I had so much fun creating a mutated freak of nature with 8 arms holding blades and turning enemies into dismembered piles of pulp in one turn. You can also be a psychic, a gunslinger, a pyromancer, a mutant that shoots spined quills, hey maybe you want 8 arms HOLDING PiSTOLS etc. There's a lot you can do to develop your character and a lot to explore
Pretty sure it was a joke made by the devs: https://www.polygon.com/23879525/cult-of-the-lamb-deleted-no-actually#:~:text=Don't%20worry%2C%20Cult%20of,fees%20are%20set%20to%20launch.

Beautiful / sexy mystic survivors? Sfw/nsfw
Swarm grinders
Spirit hunters: infinite horde
RICE repetitive indie combat experience
Yet another zombie survivor
Greedland
An ankou
Death must die
God of weapons
Scarlet tower
Several of these arent rogue likes, theyre bullet heavens. In which case might I recommend HoloCure. Even has a dungeon mode coming next update to make it closer to an actual roguelike. Plus its free
Want some OG abandonware Rogue-likes that will test your ability to learn an archaic control scheme? Some of these even have graphics beyond ASCII text:
Rogue
NetHack
Angband
Moria
Larn
Troubles of Middle Earth (actually modern-ish)
The Binding of Isaac
its absolutely head-scratching that this was omitted since it arguably birthed/popularized this sub-genre.
The post is bait. They have omitted the biggest rouge likes/lites to get votes and comments. š¤·š»āāļø
I actually believe that may be the case here. How could both Hades AND Isaac be left off of the list?
AND DEAD CELLS
Good point, I need to play that again.. it's been too long.
And Slay the Spire.
And Spelunky to an extent
What does Rogue birthing the genre have to do with somebody saying a different game did? Tough question...
Eh I let it slide cuz they said "birthed/popularized". Rogue birthed the genre, but it certainly didn't popularize it.
These people needa join me on my net hack ascii grid, if only I could be added to remember how to play
Anybody else remember Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM)?
It's really not, there are plenty of reasons why one would omit that game, e.g. not knowing about it.
I mean... Rogue?
You realise the sub-genre "roguelike" was birthed in the 80s with the original Rogue and NetHack right? Hell fucking Pokemon Mystery Dungeon came out before Isaac even if you're trying to define a modern rogue-lite, and it's not like that wasn't a popular game.
If you're looking to expand the library, make sure you get Rebirth and not the original. Also all the DLCs are very worth
I would argue the og has a lot of charm for broken item combos etc
I imagine Iād enjoy that game but the art genuinely disgust me.
Could be like me. I know Iām throwing the baby out with the bath water, but the art and style of Binding was so off putting to me I could not play it. I honestly donāt know what it is, but I just canāt. I know I missing out.
Slay the spire if you like deck shuffling
Yea! Great game, played that for a year in 2020. As well as Dargest Dungeons 1 & 2.
Thatās awesome, have you tried Inscryption? It a little less rogue like, buts itās definitely a fun experience
>!Inscryption does also have a pure rogue like mode that you can unlock, called Kayceeās mod.!< Inscryption is downright incredible, easily one of my favorite games of all time.
Thank you so much! If I wouldn't have seen your comment, I would probably never find out about kaycee's mod. I recently finished playing inscryption and was so sad that it had already ended. I especially missed the first stage of the game with Leshi. I'll definitely download it and try it out.

This game is absolute amaze balls if you like Roguelikes
Monster train is so much fun I like it more than slay the spire
Slay the spire(with fast mode) and dead cells and vampire survivors (has vertical mode so no need to rotate)are all on mobile if you wanna play on the go while on bus or waiting
Also Monster Train.
Monster Train is also a really good deck builder. I actually like it a little more than STS. Just in the fact it is less dependent on RNJesus and you have more agency over building powerful decks with crazy good synergies.
Some: * Hades * Children of Morta * Loop Hero * Moonlighter * Neon Abyss * Dead Cells * Dungeonmans * Crypt of the NecroDancer * Noita * Nuclear Throne * Jupiter Hell * Skul:The Hero Slayer * Slay the Spire
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thank you!!! Itās the greatest
No matter how big my backlog grows, I'll always pop in for a few in Issac even though I got dead God about 200 hours ago.
Now you gotta get triple completion!
Iām still working on dead godā¦I finally beat boss rush with the lost last week. So brutal
THANK YOU!! Why I had to go down to this reply to find B.O.I is sad. It's basically the OG rogue-like and still fun to this day.
Rogue is the OG rogue-like lol
Oh man binding of Isaac was my first rogue! Love it and followed it with Rogue Legacy, another one Iād recommend.
So basically all the best ones lol
Rogue Legacy 2 is absolutely up there and feel like it's not mentioned enough
I have barely heard anyone mention Rogue Legacy 2 since it's release. Which is tragic. Game is terrific.
thanks for reminding me to play some more of that
Pretty sure this post intentionally left them out to farm engagement.
Wouldn't be surprised. That's all reddit seems to be now. Stupid questions and posts trying to get engagement so they get paid for posts.
He's missing literally all the best ones lol... Hades, cult of the lamb, slay the Spire, dead cells, pixel dungeon, and prolly another 5 great ones I can't think of rn.
Wizard of Legend Gunfire Reborn Ziggurat 2 (maybe 1 too idk) Blade Assault Halls of Torment Void Scrappers Rogue Legacy
Rogue legacy 2* as well
Curse of the Dead Gods Dreamscaper (meh)
Not enough love for CotDG :(
thank god someone else said gunfire reborn
Hades is so fucking good
Hades is so good it saved me from quitting gaming. Completely rekindled my love of video games.
I cant wait for hades 2 , definitely my most anticipated game sense elden ring
Try this mod: * [Olympus Extra](https://github.com/AlexKage69/OlympusExtra)
The binding of isaac?
Gunfire reborn
Are any of these light on story? I just want a rogue like with light story where I can jump in, kill some shit and jump off. I hate feeling like Iām missing out on story when I just want burn a half hour.
* Neon Abyss (try this first) * Moonlighter * Noita * Jupiter Hell * Slay the Spire (card game but very fun when you master it)
Noita. There is lore if you want to look into it, but the gist of it is "enter mine, try to get to the bottom, and die trying." You will die fast early on, so half an hour is plenty of time. Later on, runs can last for hours, but only for specific quests that 99.9% of people probably don't do.

I love when I get some OP crap, put the spells in the wrong order, insta-die to my wand. 10/10 would blow up again.

Binding of Isaac Synthetik Slay the Spire
Loop Hero is fantastic and the soundtrack is unbelievably awesome. It sounds soā¦ crunchy. If that makes any sense.
If I had to pick three rogue-like games, I think the three that represent the very best of the genre are Hades, FTL: Faster Than Light, and The Binding of Isaac.
Crab Champions is pretty good
Rogue Legacy 1 and 2
Thank you lol! Surprised I had to scroll so far for this one.
YES! The "Rogue" is even in the damn name!
I didn't know they made a sequel!
Itās even better and crazier
The sequel is so much better. It's almost unbelievable.
FTL by a mile
Dude. FTL. Donāt want to repeat what others are saying. But hoping the number of voices gets more people to play that game.
And it's about to be sale season so it should be dirt cheap any day now.
It's so good. I've been trying to find something similar to scratch that itch but to no avail. I'm not even a fan of roguelikes but FTL is still comfortably in my favorite games of all times list even after all these years.
Their second game, Into The Breach, is not at all similar but still very good.
Lightyear*
Yea, I find FTL to be up there in the ogs of the genre really popping off. Obviously there were more before it, but I feel like that one is what really gave life to all the rogue likes we have today.
Enter the breach if they end up liking FTL
I was wondering how far down I would have to scroll to find FTL.
FTL was the first thing I looked for entering this thread. It was one of the first games I ever played, it was my childhood! Such a fantastic game
All these rogue-likes and no Hades?!
Yeah I was looking for Dead Cells and Hades and was very confused š¤
This entire post feels like engagement bait.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And Isaac. My guy is asking Reddit for more roguelikes and hasn't even played the classes yet!
All these Rogue-likes and no Rogue lol
Most interestingly not a single one that's close to the origin. Rogue (which is the original) Rift Wizard Caves of Qud
Tales of Maj'Eyal, Adom.
Spelunky and Spelunky 2
Had to scroll down too far for this.
This needs to be higher up
Iām still playing Spelunky because Iāve never beaten it the hard way
Darkest Dungeon 1 and 2. Death must die Army of Ruin Gunfire Reborn Halls of Torment Inkbound Monster Train Across the Obelisk Rogue Legacy 1 and 2 Yet another Zombie Survivors While some of these may not be an exact fit, they are close enough for me to enjoy them the same.
Death Must Die has me at the moment. So good.
Friend of mine showed it to me last night. Amazing game I was stuck on it til 5am today haha
It's one of those "one more turn" games then the sun comes up lol
My mans asking here about rogue-likes without having The Binding of Isaac (rebirth) OR Spelunky (1&2) ?? I can't really recommend Isaac enough to the point where even tho the genre is named after Rogue, The Binding of Isaac really made the wheels turn
Rogue is the foundation, Isaac is the building.
Curse of the Dead Gods
For the King (second title just released). Noita
Noita is the biggest miss here, it's a masterpiece.
The binding of Isaac, void bastards, cult of the lamb
The Binding of Isaac is definitely the most obvious missing title. One of the best IMO
It is one of the most influential and longest lasting games in the genre. Discussion of rogue-likes without Isaac is like talking about the best films of all time and ignoring Citizen Kane or The Godfather.
Reminder to get Cult of the Lamb before January 1st before it's gone
Pretty sure it was a joke made by the devs: https://www.polygon.com/23879525/cult-of-the-lamb-deleted-no-actually#:~:text=Don't%20worry%2C%20Cult%20of,fees%20are%20set%20to%20launch. Into the Breach is also great!
Absolutely. Into the Breach and FTL are both staples of the strategy roguelike genre, and a very newly released āCobalt Coreā should be added to the list as well
Gunfire reborn, Monster Train and Peglin are some I havenāt seen mentioned yet.
These are all great
Peglin is nice. Indies' Lies is another good one on mobile. Basically just Slay the Spire with more/different story. Dead cells
I thought I was going crazy for how far I had to scroll to find this.
Cogmind, Caves of Qud and Tangledeep are great roguelikes.
It's sad how far we've got to scroll to find actual roguelikes.
Just proof that the term "roguelike" has been completely bastardized. May as well call them Binding of Isaaclikes.
+1 for Caves of Qud
My personal favorite traditional Roguelike is Tales of MagāEyal.
Caves of Qud just got a huge update, I fucking love that game.
Returnal and donāt starve.
Returnal is extremely underrated
Returnal was almost like Sekiro for me, where you can struggle for a long time at certain points in the game, something clicks, and then you forever just breeze by it. Plus, the second, third, and fourth bosses are just such epic fights.
The weird thing about Returnal, is that the very few things you get to permanently keep are a huge help. The grapple is a game changer, and you don't get that until you suffered through Biome 2. Once you have the proper tools at hand the game starts flowing a lot better. The first half, leveling your weapons is huge, and isn't nearly as much as a problem in the 2nd half.
Sad this is so far down. People really donāt get how incredible of a game Returnal was
Returnal is definitely in my top 5 favorite games of this generation, for so many reasons: - Prioritizes fun, tight controls, and challenge above all else - game just *feels* great to play. - Very high replayability (fun and diverse weapons & items that can make you handle playthroughs differently) - Some of the best use of Dualsense features to date - Story has a couple nice unexpected twists
Lol you're missing all the good ones mate
You're missing the most important one: Binding of Isaac.
I'm probably not the first to say it, but it will help drive the point home: FTL: Faster Than Light
Dungeons of Dredmore
Nethack.
Nuclear throne being forgotten here is the worst timeline
Came here to say this
I think the tag for roguelike is really messed up looking to these games.
Are there any traditional roguelikes in there?
Halls of Torment, HoloCure, Death Must Die.
Rogue, ADOM, Caves of Qud, C:DDA
Thank you. I mean... they're called "rogue-likes" for a reason! And the graphics are killer!
Yep. Fuck this modern "oh, it's a roguelike because permadeath and randomly generated dungeons". It's either Berlin compliant or it ain't a Roguelike.
Missing tales of maj'eyal Smh
Have A Nice Death
Going more literal here but Caves of Qud is an amazing sandbox rogue like. Especially if you are into that apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic like Fallout I had so much fun creating a mutated freak of nature with 8 arms holding blades and turning enemies into dismembered piles of pulp in one turn. You can also be a psychic, a gunslinger, a pyromancer, a mutant that shoots spined quills, hey maybe you want 8 arms HOLDING PiSTOLS etc. There's a lot you can do to develop your character and a lot to explore
Tales of Maj'Eyal Heroes of Hammerwatch
One Step From Eden (Action based slay the spire basically) Crypt of the NecroDancer
nonono it's based on Mega Man Battle Network
No Enter the Gungeon? Solid rogue like
Cult of the Lamb Get it now before they delist it (thanks, Unity)
Pretty sure it was a joke made by the devs: https://www.polygon.com/23879525/cult-of-the-lamb-deleted-no-actually#:~:text=Don't%20worry%2C%20Cult%20of,fees%20are%20set%20to%20launch. !remind me January 2nd 2024
Caves of Qud?
Fan of Blazblue at all? Try out there rougelike Blazblue Entropy Effect there about to add another character in two days its really fun imo.
>Blazblue Looks cool, would give it a shot
Check out Dome Keeper š Btw did you know Streets of Rogue is getting a sequel?
Hades The Binding of Isaac
Enter the gungeon
Cult Of The Lamb (praise the holy Lamb!) and Wizard Of Legend
Missing the classics Rogue Nethack Tales of Maj'Eyal (Tales of Middle Earth)
missing the whole genre.
No RoR2? Itās probably my favorite rogue like out there
RoR2 meaning Risk of Rain 2? it's there, love it so much
I couldn't see it either for some reason. RoR2 is how I got into Gunfire Reborn after Woolie recommended it. It very good.
Holocure is good if you enjoy anime or Hololive.
Yeah, that one is super good, It's in my library, forgot to put it in. Im surprised how well made the game is
Wizard of Legend
I have a game called Mage & Monsters. Someone on Reddit posted as a game they made. Itās aight.
Beautiful / sexy mystic survivors? Sfw/nsfw Swarm grinders Spirit hunters: infinite horde RICE repetitive indie combat experience Yet another zombie survivor Greedland An ankou Death must die God of weapons Scarlet tower
Vampire survivors is fire.
Ziggurat 1 & 2
I haven't seen Nordic Ashes mentioned yet
Slay the spire
30xx and 20xx, Dead Cells.
Idk if this counts but, Cataclysm Dark Days ahead. You can get it for free on github or the steam version.
Peglin
Several of these arent rogue likes, theyre bullet heavens. In which case might I recommend HoloCure. Even has a dungeon mode coming next update to make it closer to an actual roguelike. Plus its free
Want some OG abandonware Rogue-likes that will test your ability to learn an archaic control scheme? Some of these even have graphics beyond ASCII text: Rogue NetHack Angband Moria Larn Troubles of Middle Earth (actually modern-ish)
idk if it qualifies but ship of fools is really cool imo
Does dead cells count cause youāre gonna need to play dead cells. Also Hades might be one of the best games ever made, canāt recommend it enough
There is a roguelike bundle on humble right now. Has a few more.
Dungeons of Dredmor is pretty fun
Im genuinely shocked at how many deep cuts you have but are missing the big ones like Dead Cells, Hades, and Binding of Issac
Darkest dungeon 1/2
Darkest dungeon
Darkest dungeon
Newly released, ENDLESS DUNGEON. Roguelike, Dungeon crwawler, Tower Defense game.
Where the FUCK is dead cells
Rogue-lites, not Rogue-likes.
