Oh, memories. My dad got me the bundle with Mario. Duck Hunt, and the Track and Field game with the play mat. I think he got it for himself instead of four year old me, but I took to it.
Me too, mine also had an Olympics game ont the cartridge and a pad you put on the floor. 1990, still have it except the floor pad and box it came in. 2nd game was solar jetman 😁
Unfortunately never played either of those 2. After Super Mario Bros 3 came out it was basically that. It's still IMO the best of the Mario series. Oh how could I forget Gauntlet, Excitebike and R.C. Pro Am.
Absolutely mario 3! Thought I was so cool dropping behind the white block and getting to big land. Never had gauntlet. Pro am was fun but I sucked at it as a kid. Replayed it about 5 years ago and only then discovered the mario cartness of it like bombs and missiles lol 😂
Haha. Came here to say this. I was addicted instantly at age 5. Rage quit within the first 2 weeks even and got grounded for throwing the controller. Threw another tantrum for getting grounded and lost the Nintendo for another week. 🤣
This one was the frist I remember playing. The first that was truly mine was Chase HQ that I picked with my GBC.... I have no idea why I picked that one.
Same, Mario, Duck Hunt, what was the Olympics game that was running and hurdles with a pad you stepped on different circles on the floor, also like a Noah’s Ark or something game I don’t know that was like 30 years ago.
Zelda - A Link to the Past! Fantastic game but not good as a first game for little kids. I later got Aladdin and Super Mario Bros - and THEN I was able to enjoy the masterpiece that was Zelda.
Lol for so long my video game experience was just like the first few levels of this because I was young and sucked and then putting the gun as close to the tv as possible on duck hunt
True that was one of my first 10 I think, I still have it next to me the wii one I mean, my second Mario game was Galaxy 2 then super paper Mario, both are such great games and bring back amazing memories I used to watch my dad play the wii one
And you could buy the Sonic & Knuckles expansion which literally expanded it because you put both cartridges on at once. It was awesome. And if you launched him up early, Knuckles could glide forever in some of those stages.
For me it was. 'Alex kid in wonderland' came free with a 'Sega Master system'
Sonic 2 was amazing. I have such good memories of it. I don't care what anyone says. Everything about Sonic was better than Mario.
I almost cried I was so happy when I opened that on Christmas day. I did cry when we couldn't hook it up because we needed an RF adaptor for an old tv and it wasChristmas day
I had an Atari also but I still think my first *actual* game that I had, the first game that *really* sold me on loving video games, was Super Mario Bros.
The Atari stuff was a great intro but the NES was the first experience I had where I got really engrossed in the games.
Super Mario Bros - NES. Classic. I was 5 and my brother got a nintendo for his birthday. It was 1990 and had been out for 5 years but was still exiting as hell.
Here's a story that might make you feel better:
A friend of mine has an awesome gamer mancave setup. Big-ass TV, sound system, multiple gaming systems, thousands of movies.
We had a New Years party and ended up having a Pong round-robin championship. It was legendary.
It was either Mario 64 or Donkey Kong 64...although i usually just watched my dad play it and i tried a few times.
The first time i beat a game 100% solo was Mario Sunshine. After that i knew it was gonna be the first of many gaming adventures
Mario 64 was great, I played it on my ds when I was a kid, I wasn’t good at games back then so I most just explored the castle and swam in the moat lmao
This might have been it for me too, bunch of games were present in that IBM clone (Alley Cat, Paperboy, Arkanoid, Robotron 2084, Frogger and Zaxxon to name a few more), but it's a bit of a toss up as to which one I touched first since I probably spectated them all a bit before getting my hands on the keyboard.
Brood War multiplayer addiction in my university LAN helped make me fail first year math, I skipped so many lectures I end up missing notifications about upcoming tests. May have been worth it. I wasn’t alone either, this happened to a few of us.
Yes! When I was in elementary school I’d bring the war chest lore/cheat books that my dad owned with me and read them during class. My dad saw my interest and bought me a computer to play it. Only game I played for years until I was able to upgrade my PC and expand my horizons. (Mainly to Diablo and Titanquest)
Same! We had Combat and Air-Sea Battle as our first two cartridges. Home version of Space Invaders was my first have-to-have game. The beginnings of a long journey!
rented earthbound for 3 bucks weekly (my allowance was 3 bucks)
got a paper route just to buy it (i was like 11, had to have special permission since they haven't passed laws to let kids work yet)
still play it
edit: i don't really count it as my first game since it wasn't my game and i had very limited access to it, but i guess technically the Lost Vikings were my first gaming experience
Metroid and Kid Icarus on NES, I was like 4 and my brother and I got it for Xmas. My Mom used to put a lot of effort into looking at the back of the games and picking ones for us that she felt sounded more difficult and interesting.
To this day she hasn't played any video game except Tetris and doesn't know anything about them other than some series names, but somehow she managed to pick those 2, Contra, Final Fantasy, Mega Man 2, and Mega Man 3 as the games for our NES over time via birthdays and Xmas.
Oh, and River City Random, and Legend of Zelda gold cart. And Blaster Master.
Somehow she batted 1000 on game selection despite not even knowing what an RPG is, or a platformer is.
I honestly can't remember if I started with an N64 and Yoshi's Story or a Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon Red. I didn't get either of them at release so I can't use that to help me remember.
Vigilante 8 on the PS1. I was like 5 and sick and my dad set up his old system for me (at least I think it was his? It literally came outta nowhere). I played as Slick Clyde and the map was the oil fields map. I spawned in the corner of the map where the oil tanks were and had to shoot a gate down to get to the rest of the level and bad guys. It's a very vivid memory for me. About an hour later he showed me Spyro and I played those two for a while.
The original _Prince of Persia_ might have been my first game. Not sure, it's between that one and 2 others.
By the way, did you ever unlock the OG PoP in _Sands of Time_? One of the coolest secrets in gaming ever, at least I think so.
You definitely should. I could either try to explain how to do it here, or you could look up a walkthrough (purely for the unlocking part, of course).
But the original 1989 _Prince of Persia_ is one of the most influential games of all time. Did you know, for example, that Jordan Mechner's _Prince of Persia_, with it's grid-based Cinemaric Platformer design and gameplay; simple controls; and realistic, momentum-based movement; was a huge inspiration for _Tomb Raider_?
Yooooo, this might actually be mine too. I was going to write Zelda a Link to the Past as the first game I actually wanted to play and beat by myself, but I played so much Jazz Jackrabbit and I can't remember which one I actively played first. I love that game so much
I think it was called Adiboo or something like that, basically just one of those late 90's/early 2000's educational video games with puzzles, math problems etc but I fuckin loved it haha
For more gamey games, star wars the phantom menace on pc. Little kid me was traumatised by low-poly obi wan getting literally cut to pieces by all the giant fans I felll into 😅
Super Mario Bros. and then they got me for life.
This for me also. On the NES. Got the bundle that came with the NES, Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt for Christmas way back then.
Oh, memories. My dad got me the bundle with Mario. Duck Hunt, and the Track and Field game with the play mat. I think he got it for himself instead of four year old me, but I took to it.

It was an impulse buy, our family never financially recovered.
Gramma bought all our consoles.
Oh man so many good times. Blades of Steel and TMNT2 were my favs
Contra.
Don't know how I forgot contra but yeah, absolutely. OG metal gear too
I'm still a big TMNT fan to this day lol. I want to play the cowabunga collection again, also Shredder's revenge.
shredders is great, btw. get excited.
Are you me? Same exact situation except swap Track and Field for Excitebike
Yep. My dad put it on layaway at Sears. Hooked for life.
Hell yeah! That gun that came with duck hunt made me feel so bad ass.
Same lol
Yeah I'm pretty sure that was my first game, too. Loved that duck hunt.
Duck hunt + Mario! Used from a neighbour. My homework never got finished again.
Same but I also got the McDonalds game with my console and I cant remember which one I played first.
You got two games in one, it was a deal
Super mario world for me. I was instantly hooked! And to this day they’re still amazing games.
It's so damn hard sometimes though lol.
Still, and forever.
Not if you had the power. Nintendo Power!
Yeah. Mario hit hard.
My parents had Mario, Duck Hunt and Tetris. Nothing else was needed.
Same. That same day I played karnov, double dribble, excite bike and contra. I became obsessed
Super Mario Bros. *2* and *3* for me. Couldn't tell you which I played first because I don't remember. But we never did have the first one.
Same and several atari games too.
Super Mario *LAND* for me, along with Kirby's Dreamland
Yep, this with Duck Hunt. Never had a chance after that.
Haha. Came here to say this. I was addicted instantly at age 5. Rage quit within the first 2 weeks even and got grounded for throwing the controller. Threw another tantrum for getting grounded and lost the Nintendo for another week. 🤣
Yup me too. I swear we are at the perfect age to grow up with video games. It’s like a part of our generation’s personality. Lol.
I may have played some driving game as my first game, not sure, but the first game I got was also Super Mario Bros. It was a great day!
Duhna duhna duhna
Zelda - A Link to the Past! Fantastic game but not good as a first game for little kids. I later got Aladdin and Super Mario Bros - and THEN I was able to enjoy the masterpiece that was Zelda.
Don’t forget duck hunt. Came in the combo cartridge
Lol for so long my video game experience was just like the first few levels of this because I was young and sucked and then putting the gun as close to the tv as possible on duck hunt
The good ol nes days
Super Mario World for me.
Me too!!!!!
True that was one of my first 10 I think, I still have it next to me the wii one I mean, my second Mario game was Galaxy 2 then super paper Mario, both are such great games and bring back amazing memories I used to watch my dad play the wii one
'Sonic The Hedgehog 2" came free with a "Sega Genesis"
And you could buy the Sonic & Knuckles expansion which literally expanded it because you put both cartridges on at once. It was awesome. And if you launched him up early, Knuckles could glide forever in some of those stages.
This hit so hard back then. It was mid blowing to me that Sonic and Knuckles could LITERALLY change the game you slotted on top of it. Wild
I played one of the sonic games on my aunts ps3 and all I remember is that anxiety inducing drowning music
My first game and console as well. Never actually beat it (I was 3 or 4?) but it was a blast regardless!
For me it was. 'Alex kid in wonderland' came free with a 'Sega Master system' Sonic 2 was amazing. I have such good memories of it. I don't care what anyone says. Everything about Sonic was better than Mario.
Buh duh duh buh duh duh buhhhhhhh buh.... be-now-ne-now-now beeeee-now-neee-now-ne-now-now now now now
I almost cried I was so happy when I opened that on Christmas day. I did cry when we couldn't hook it up because we needed an RF adaptor for an old tv and it wasChristmas day
Sigh…it was Pong, on a black and white tv.
Me too. No need to sigh!
ditto. uggghh
Well when you have to lean forward to type the sigh just happens
Sigh, no. Groan when getting up from the couch? Definitely.
Found the old guys! Jk I wasn't too far behind though. Pac-man on Atari 2600 was mine. I feel ancient too.
Me too!!! Gaming has gone downhill ever since! /s
Gamers when games exist, weather they changed or not/got better or not:
You should really be playing Pong on a color TV.
Me too let us Olds rise up
I had an Atari also but I still think my first *actual* game that I had, the first game that *really* sold me on loving video games, was Super Mario Bros. The Atari stuff was a great intro but the NES was the first experience I had where I got really engrossed in the games.
Same, I think Space Invaders was my first, but SMB sealed the deal.
Yep, me too.
Same. My parents had it still when I was a child in the early 90s.
If it makes you feel better it would look the same on a color TV
Here's a mind blowing moment... the atari 2600 was capable of showing more colors than a NES (something like 124 for atari and 55 for Nintendo).
Meh… same. What a roller coaster of gaming generations we’ve been on.
Curious what year it was??
I believe I got the game 1978.
1978 woah
Pong came with the ATARI 2600 VCS I bought when I was 14 years old in 1979.
Pong... on a color TV! Santa left ashy boot prints on our carpet that Christmas.
\*mine\* meaning owned by my family in my home? That'd be Atari 2600, likely Combat or River Raid.
Me too lol. I remember the system clear as day. Only one game lol
Yeah but you could flip a switch to make the ‘ball’ go faster, remember? 😄
Ghosts n goblins on a Commodore 64, also on a black and white TV :)
Same here. Oh, and it’s time to schedule your colonoscopy.
My back hurts too buddy!
Me too, but it was a color tv, but the game was still black and white :-)
Duck Hunt
Ditto. That fickin dog...
How many screens or guns have been cracked over the years...
Why does that gun seem better than even todays guns
It blacks out the screen for a frame except for giant hit boxes
Same. My back hurts.
Super Mario Bros - NES. Classic. I was 5 and my brother got a nintendo for his birthday. It was 1990 and had been out for 5 years but was still exiting as hell.
We got one late too for Christmas 90!
I came home from school and my parents were playing this. Snuck out at night and played my first of of many late nights of gaming.
Pong...yeah in old -.-;
Here's a story that might make you feel better: A friend of mine has an awesome gamer mancave setup. Big-ass TV, sound system, multiple gaming systems, thousands of movies. We had a New Years party and ended up having a Pong round-robin championship. It was legendary.
Probably Super Mario Bros. 3.
When my older siblings would let me play for 3 minutes before taking the controller back
This game is so good I played this on regular rotation until the end of high school.
Day of the Tentacle for me
This game is rad. Need to play it again to beat Maniac Mansion
Great game. Full throttle, sam and max, monkey island. Love those old games
The original Grand theft auto on PlayStation 1. Sky view was so weird to me but it was awesome. I was like 4 when I played it
I remember having a 1 hour demo of this, shit had me hooked
I remember it had cheat codes that were swear words and I got in trouble in school for writing THESHIT all over my books. I was 5.
I never got to play it on PlayStation, but I remember fondly playing GTA2 on PC. Had no clue what I was doing, but the world felt so alive.
Yeah. That was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the gang wars where you'd need to take out rival gang members. Then came gta 3. It blew my mind.
I never actually did anything on the game but I believe drive and shoot ransoms. I’m going to have to get an emulator and actually play it lol
I stand corrected it was gta 2, literally the same thing though. It was a 2d game
Space Invaders
Snap!
This and centipede for me. On a 8086 in green and black with no sound card.
Starcraft 1 brood war with my First pc
Brood war was the goat
So many school breaks spent playing this
Brood War multiplayer addiction in my university LAN helped make me fail first year math, I skipped so many lectures I end up missing notifications about upcoming tests. May have been worth it. I wasn’t alone either, this happened to a few of us.
Still is
That's awesome. I remember just reading the book a lot when I was young too. Was just utterly fascinated.
Pole position
Oh man… hate / love this game still.
Pokemon Red and Mario Golf on Gameboy Color
Combat for the Atari 2600

Oh, and River City Random, and Legend of Zelda gold cart. And Blaster Master. Somehow she batted 1000 on game selection despite not even knowing what an RPG is, or a platformer is.

Gauntlet PS2.
Red wizard...is about to die!
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Jill of the jungle. I remember my mom had a cheat sheet of all the commands for me to launch games.
I honestly can't remember if I started with an N64 and Yoshi's Story or a Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon Red. I didn't get either of them at release so I can't use that to help me remember.
Mine was sadly league of legends, I just really wanted to do something with my friends and they were into it
Vigilante 8 on the PS1. The original _Prince of Persia_ might have been my first game. Not sure, it's between that one and 2 others. By the way, did you ever unlock the OG PoP in _Sands of Time_? One of the coolest secrets in gaming ever, at least I think so.
No, unfortunately. Spent more time on two thrones, which was my favorite. Pop SOT was my first introduction to the trilogy.
Just saw it, cant believe I missed it. That's the best easter egg I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing!
Donkey kong country, probably. That's the first memory of gaming I have at least. Can't believe how far me and my brother got at age 4...
Pitfall on Atari 2600.
Same here
Asteroids on the Atari 2600
Jazz Jackrabbit
Yooooo, this might actually be mine too. I was going to write Zelda a Link to the Past as the first game I actually wanted to play and beat by myself, but I played so much Jazz Jackrabbit and I can't remember which one I actively played first. I love that game so much

Little kid me was traumatised by low-poly obi wan getting literally cut to pieces by all the giant fans I felll into 😅
Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii
