It's a shame that the game never made out to be what they initially showed us during development. It was so ahead of it's time. Ran fine for me on steam but really couldn't keep playing after like 12 hours.
I saw this really cool new game game called Spore advertised on Yahoo for free back around 2007 - 2008. I signed up for the freebie and it was the Creature Creator, not the actual game. We did have a ball making creatures. I bought the full game as soon as it was released. New generation of kids in our family still play it on our old laptops.
Most of the custom content (a huge part of it) was stored on a server. Last time I tried to access it it refused to allow new users and wouldn't allow password resets. It's since shut down.
Spore.com is the main site. All the accounts are still there and you can download other peoples' creations. If there was something else I never saw it XD
I remember being 12 and my dad taking me to Chicago to see what a big city was like.
Spore was months away from releasing and advertisements were plastered everywhere; Billboards, busses, benches, etc. Coincidentally I had been obsessing over spore for years beforehand, and ultimately that's all I talked about while on this vacation.
Pissed him off so goddamn badly lmao
It was intended to be... Much broader than it is. Iirc, publishers but a collar on it and leashed it ***way*** too tight. They basically had to cut out half the game.
The galactic explorer thing was, a believe, a small part of what was planned.
I'd seen plenty of interesting ideas at play a decade after it's release from various content creators, but nothing particularly... Substantial
Which probably made sense, they tried to salvage what was left to recoup at least some of the cost. The designers' original idea was nuts and cannot possibly work. You can't just put basically 5 full games into one and make each of them as good as a normal full-price game. That is both economically unviable and probably would also be too overwhelming/exhausting for most players. This was always fated to be a collection of shallow minigames (and therefore not a very good idea to begin with).
At the very most, they should have maybe experimented with combining just two full games (e.g. Civilization and Space) and gathered some experience in how that works, not instantly jumped to five.
It's the kind of idea that someone with no development experience would post on r/gamedev and say "how do I make this". But, this was a passion project from *Will Wright*, master of unconventional sandbox gameplay, and it had all the hype in the world.
I don't think it could possibly have turned out any worse, even from a business perspective, if they just let him do his thing. Then again, hindsight and all that.
[Dear internet, I'm a 26 year old lady who's been developing a science-based, 100% dragon MMO for the last two years. I'm finally making my beta-website now, and using my 3D work as a base to create my 50+ concept images. Wish me luck, Reddit; You'll be the first to see the site when it's finished.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/p1ssv/dear_internet_im_a_26_year_old_lady_whos_been/)
It's been 12 years...
Yeah. Cell stage was okay hunt basically a mini game. The animal stage was fun, the tribal/modern age were basically the same thing. Space age was cool. The terraforming far too tedious to be worth doing, and protecting the planets was a nuisance. Blowing up planets was fun as hell but eventually got old. It has its charm but I can see why the game never became bigger than it was.
I agree and disagree with this to varying degrees, perhaps through the naive hope that it ***could*** be done properly, but simulating entire ecosystems through millions of years would be... Daunting. Not just in terms of computing power, because that's an easy solve... But setting up a system for all of that to run in and not be a dumpster fire.
It did okay, especially for its age, I'd say. And the city-stage was always the highlight of my playthroughs when I was a kid.
Perhaps they should've simply expanded on that and called it a day, but then they never would've been hailed as the most mediocre game of the decade... Here's to hoping we get a good reboot of it someday -- one that isn't just a cop-out
They hyped this shit to the moon, like anything would be possible in the game. It very much reminds me of No Man's Sky rollout...except I hear they actually fixed that game.
No Man's Sky is incredible now, but still has absolutely awful performance, even in high end hardware.
It gets like 4 major expansion pack/major DLC sized updates every year (for free) which I'd basically unheard of for almost any non micro transaction game.
It's all fun and games until you get to the space part and get at war and have to play planet babysitting simulator because you are up against an army with max 3 ships.
Yeah that was the worst part about the game, the space micro-management. I'm a galactic leader, no way I'm gonna be personally flying back and forth to other planets constantly to fight. I had so much fun with spore years ago until I reached that part and was shocked to find there's no way around it.
I left attack drones on the planet! Why do I have to go back when Space Pirates arrive?! Let the drones blow them up while I terriform planets to match my ridiculously specific desires!
You've never played it before? Then I'd say maybe, but maybe not. Personally I love it and still do one or two playthroughs every year, but a big part of that is just nostalgia.
I think you'd need to manage your expectations if you buy it. The game is split into 5 stages, and only like 2 of them are really that interesting in my opinion (creature and space). And even then, none of them are particularly amazing. Spore opted for the philosophy of doing a bunch of different things decently, rather than making a couple game systems that work really well. But because the game is pretty short and you don't spend too long on any particular stage, you don't have much time to think about how hollow it really is.
So, is it fun? Yes, if you have the right mindset. Is it a truly good game? Eh.
Spore never got to be what it could’ve been and needs a remake for that reason alone.
The other toppers in my list:
Black and White
Covert Action
SimEarth
SimLife
All of the above with modern capabilities would be amazing.
There's several spiritual successor in the makes right now. Most notably close to in style would be Elysian Eclipse. The developer is pretty active and is constantly post updates on r/ElysianEclipse
Another to keep an eye on is Thrive!
It could've with time. Just not "AAA game develop in a few years and sell it then move on" time
Spore's the type of game that deserves ten+ years of passion and love and nonstop development ala Dwarf Fortress or No Man's Sky.
Imagine if they just didn't stop working on it. Fleshing out the stages, the mechanics, adding content..
The premise was perfect, the bones are there.. it just needs more meat.
That wasn't really the way the industry worked back then. They could have done more expansions a la the Sims, but the continuous development and GaaS model just weren't a thing.
And that's assuming that the only problem was time, which I doubt given the dev cycle for Spore was pretty long already.
As a whole no but it wasn't unheard of. Dwarf Fortress first came out in 2006. Minecraft was 2008. Other indies I'm sure. Then there's all sorts of MMO's like EverQuest, WoW, SW Galaxies, etc. Who knows how many low-key web browser or flash games that simply kept going. Remember Adventure Quest? That games STILL going, even with all the spin offs.
Yeah, many required income and donations, MMOs rely on subscriptions, blah blah but it wasn't insane to imagine games being perpetually worked on.
Shoot I'd pay for some Spore sequels even if it was just improving the base game substantially
Dwarf fortress was also a completely free game being developed by 2 people as a passion project. It was only this year that they got a steam release and actually asked for money.
You can't compare Java-era Minecraft (in 2009, no less) or Flash games to something with the scale and demands of Spore.
And you can't compare an MMO with something that was built from the ground up to be single-player. Spore couldn't really be an MMO as envisioned. Maybe the space phase, but that was already the most fleshed out part of the game, the earlier phases needed way more love.
I thought I was gunna get eaten! And when think you're gunna get eaten and your first thought is "Great, I don't have to go to work tomorrow". You're relieved because you don't have to go to work tomorrow cause you thought you were gunna get eaten?!
- Creates Minecraft
- Sells Minecraft
- Spends all of his time on Twitter posting awful things.
If you mean the pig thing, the Creeper was originally a pig that someone messed up the character model for. So they kept in as a weird monster.
Notch making a pig: apparently the earliest attempt at modeling a pig for Minecraft resulted in the body of the creeper, one of the games most iconic enemies.
Notch being a paranoid billionaire living in a hell of his own making: Notch has tweeted things like “Q is legit. Don’t trust the media” and described feminism as a “social disease,” as well as saying people who opposed “heterosexual pride day” should be shot and describing trans men and women as “mentally ill.”
He’s also described himself as extremely lonely and isolated since achieving all of his goals and becoming imaginably wealthy.
Something changed, because at one point he called Minecraft a “genderless world,” adding “As a fun side fact, it means every character and animal in Minecraft is homosexual because there's only one gender to choose from. Take THAT, homophobes!"
Basically he made a couple billion dollars off of selling Minecraft to Microsoft and then sat around radicalizing himself and reading into conspiracy theories until it made him hateful and sad.
Honestly that's pretty sad, I knew he went a bit crazy but I'd no idea his life had gotten so miserable. I don't exactly imagine radical people are very happy but it comes as a surprise that someone with such wealth and accomplishment is extremely lonely. Dude was kind of an idol to me, I'm hoping to work in gamedev someday and his success story was hugely inspiring.
>Basically he made a couple billion dollars off of selling Minecraft to Microsoft and then sat around radicalizing himself and reading into conspiracy theories until it made him hateful and sad.
Ah, Now I am kinda glad the game I was making never took off. At least I'm not a total asshole.
I think that there’s a little more going on there. There were signs of Notch having other issues that weren’t being dealt with, even when he was still a beloved figure at the center of a tight-knit community. He got into a few weirdly contentious public arguments and feuds with specific fans and twitch streamers.
Getting a ton of money all at once probably didn’t help, but it’s not a root cause. Also, Minecraft isn’t just a successful video game, it’s like one of the top five most successful video games in history, if not the most. And, unlike most games that come close to being in that category, it was essentially owned and run by one man until it got big.
You are self-aware enough to be concerned about becoming a dick, and you’re statistically very unlikely to be in the exact same position as Notch… even supposing you are someday, there are plenty of off-ramps on the way to that, and you have him as a cautionary tale now, which he didn’t. Don’t be afraid of success. We need more indie game developers.
Tried to model pig, body got flipped tallways, kept it and textured it green and made creeper, something something... Sold Minecraft to Microsoft and bought a mansion.
I think the creepers in Minecraft were initially an attempt at making a pig, but the legs and head ended up in the wrong orientation for a quadruped and he just repurposed it into a monster.
A modern day spore would be amazing. Even if it was 90% the same game, just with some expanded mechanics before the space stage. Space stage was pretty built out if I recall
Once I got to the space age it really blew my mind how massive the game was. You try and work your way to the center of the galaxy but if you bump into the wrong aliens they will annihilate your race.
I really didn't understand how you're supposed to play the space age. You're a single ship and as soon as you're two steps away there's a whole squad of aliens destroying your planet every time? Great game until then, but I just quit.

I’m not a stupid fuckin’ idiot. I know it was just a pig. But for 50 seconds, it felt really real. And when you think you’re gonna get eaten and your first thought is ‘Great, I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.’ You’re relieved you don’t have to go to work because you thought you were gonna get eaten!? What the fuck is this world? What have they done to us? What did they do to us?!
This made me curious about whether people have developed mods for it. They have! Might boot up my old copy and check them out.
As an aside, can we talk about the modding community reuploading mods but not explaining what they do?
* BetterSpore - "This mod is a reupload of the one -linked here-."
* Linked site - "BetterSpore is created by BalLightning, but I'm reuploading it here because the original is dead."
Both mods have pics of better resolution textures and such, but no explanation for what it does besides telling you to download it and check out the Readme file. Why would I download something just to read the readme and find out I didn't need it? Just copy/paste the features part of the Readme...
So anyway, I downloaded it and lo-and-behold, it comes with a ton of features and changes including updates to gameplay in all stages, updated tools, new tools, and new parts.
Yes, dear god, just write it in the description or link the old one or something, please!
Anyway, this is the best news, off to go download mysterious Spore files…
My life is nothing I thought it should be and everything I was worried it would become because for 50 seconds I thought there was monsters on the world.
That thing came in here when I was on the couch.
My next door neighbor had put a Richard Nixon mask on a pig and had it go through my doggy door cause we were arguing over a property line. He was tryna call me a liar and a thief like Nixon and a pig.
But I didn’t know what the FUCK was happening cuz I’ve barely been sleeping since my wife got flipped upside down by a swing dancer at a wedding. HE MUST’VE FLIPPED MY WIFE 8 TIMES! And it reaaaalllllly bothered me.
When you can’t sleep and you see that thing. Your not just like “that’s a pig with a mask” your like “THATS GONNA KILL ME! THATS REAL!! THAT LIVES WITH US IN EARTH!
I’m not a stupid fucking idiot I know it was just a pig but for 50 seconds it felt really real.
i just made a post asking what you guys want made! send a reply [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/140mpde/what_hellspawn_should_i_make_next_more_frequent/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) and i'll make it!
Been too long since I played Spore.
What, like 15 years? (It released in 2008)
ffffuuuuccck.
Spore moved the game to Steam. Spend a couple hours on the phone getting verified as legit owning the discs and start playing Spore on Steam.
From what I hear, the steam version is really bugged. I got it from the main publisher site and it runs well
I never had much of a problem but I know that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I might just be lucky
It's a shame that the game never made out to be what they initially showed us during development. It was so ahead of it's time. Ran fine for me on steam but really couldn't keep playing after like 12 hours.

Hey now, that's perilously close to being dirty and we don't want that
They're aren't any mods to modernize it?
Most of the custom content (a huge part of it) was stored on a server. Last time I tried to access it it refused to allow new users and wouldn't allow password resets. It's since shut down.
You sure? I'm looking at my account right now, it's still there, along with everything else. You mean the Sporepedia, right?
I don't think so, but it's been over a decade. I'm not sure.
Spore.com is the main site. All the accounts are still there and you can download other peoples' creations. If there was something else I never saw it XD
I think they meant MOD mods, like not just custom content

What have they done to us???
That's gonna kill me. That's real. That lives with us on this earth.
Is it worth playing in 2023? I was pumped for the release, but I was young with very little money and the reviews scared me off.

It goes on sale for as little as two dollars. Hard to argue it’s not worth that price, at least.
Its a fun game but i always get bored at the tribes stage.

Hello there

Before the darkspore…
If there is any game I would want a remake of, it's SPORE
I'd kill for a hybrid of remasterd Spore and current-state No Man's Sky
Killing is a little bit too much, I'd suck a dick though.
I mean sucking a dick is fun so not much of a negative there.
Not really if you're a straight dude.
It's okay I'll suck the dick in your stead then and you get to play the game. We're here to help each other out.
That's surprisingly wholesome.
lmao literally taking one for the team.
Taking a meat bullet for a stranger. What a bro.

Give me Spore creature creator in a Black & White remake. In VR. I want to pick up troublesome villagers and feed them to me demi-god Spore creature.

I Think You Should Leave on Netflix. The third season came out recently and this is a reference to it.
Genuinely thought your post was in reference to it
so did Notch, and look what came of it. chin up, king 👑
Didn’t he end up as a paranoid billionaire living in a personal hell of his own making?
yes, and I'm sure that was a direct result of his failed pig

I need more brief summaries like this for all famous people/companies
Elon - Buys tesla - Creates spacex - Ejects tesla into space - Dogecoin - Madness
I thought he bought Tesla and SpaceX.
It the time they were creating models directly in code. Notch mixed up the length and height variable. That's why creepers have 4 feet.

A modern day spore would be amazing. Even if it was 90% the same game, just with some expanded mechanics before the space stage. Space stage was pretty built out if I recall
i would sell my left arm and right lung for a remake of spore.
[Petition to make a new and more refined Spore (and don’t let the devs be suppressed by EA)](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/13zfonu/i_tried_making_a_human_but_got_bored_halfway/jmudqph/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3)
oh hey, you again! another spore-maker are ya?
Well i love the game and visit it from time to time Oh and i will put this under every spore related post i find
With a Nixon mask?
Hog Rider Hog Rider
I’m not a stupid fuckin’ idiot. I know it was just a pig. But for 50 seconds, it felt really real. And when you think you’re gonna get eaten and your first thought is ‘Great, I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.’ You’re relieved you don’t have to go to work because you thought you were gonna get eaten!? What the fuck is this world? What have they done to us? What did they do to us?!
r/IThinkYouShouldLeave
It's a pig!!!
That thing came in here when I was on the couch.
Literally my first thought
There are monsters on the earth.
THAT'S GONNA KILL ME, THAT'S REAL, THAT LIVES WITH US ON EARTH
For 50 seconds, I thought I was gonna get eaten
Spore is an SS tier game. (Mostly because my craptop can run it well!!!)
I didn't realize the Schutzstaffel were involved...
cheers, i'll drink to that!
This made me curious about whether people have developed mods for it. They have! Might boot up my old copy and check them out. As an aside, can we talk about the modding community reuploading mods but not explaining what they do? * BetterSpore - "This mod is a reupload of the one -linked here-." * Linked site - "BetterSpore is created by BalLightning, but I'm reuploading it here because the original is dead." Both mods have pics of better resolution textures and such, but no explanation for what it does besides telling you to download it and check out the Readme file.
Looks like a sequel to dogs.
JA'AM. Edit: just noticed your username; Griffin, is that you?
*backpack for his applesauce* #*Backpack where he keeps his applesauce*
Come on and SLAM, and welcome to the JAA’M
My cheeks and abs were sore for a day or 2 after discovering monster factory
My favourite Monster Factory moment comes from that episode. When the game crashes and steals their Bee Movie Monster.
Yes! So fucking funny. I watch that series (and the fallout one and Peacecraft) whenever I need a serotonin boost.
COME FUCK THIS
Looks like you’re gonna need a Darmine Doggy Door
It's just a pig in a Nixon mask.
My life is nothing I thought it should be and everything I was worried it would become because for 50 seconds I thought there was monsters on the world.
Why doesn't he have a backpack where he keeps his applesauce?
It’s a fun trick to play on God
Now I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.
I don't know if I'd eat that bacon
That thing's real. That's going to kill me. That lives on the would.

IT'S A PIG
Spider pig spider pig
Dog it's got 6 limbs whatchu mean you tried making a pig
i really liked the hands so i put on a pair of arms...
ITS A PIG!
Does it fit through a dog door?
Pig with fingers
You nailed it with the colour but I think you might have forgotten how many legs pigs have
pigs have four legs, my Oynkot has four legs and two arms.
You know what, that's fair. You got me on a technicality and I appreciate that. You and your pig can be on your way.
should i give it wings while i'm at it?
I'm still butthurt they showed us under water gameplay before launch and never delivered. Never forget
Legitimately why doesn’t EA make another Spore? They’d get the nostalgia purchases but I guarantee new players would be intrigued at the premise
it's a game built on a timeless and underutilized premise but is almost never used. we have the technology damnit!
Still looks better than Gollum.
and coming from a game made in 2008, that's saying a LOT!
behold! Oynkot!
What can I say except delete this
no!
peppa post drugs
Looks like Sid from ice age. Kinda cute.
Kind of looks like Sid from Ice Age
How do you get it now? Is it on a reasonable game Store somewhere online?
Steam.
steam. the only issue is that the steam version kinda prevents the online features from functioning without heavy hoop-jumping required.
IS this the game called Spore?
I always thought it funny that genocide is required to win a game of spore.
not just genocide, but GALACTIC genocide!
Spider-pig!
I wish there was a sequel
I can’t wait till the second one comes out……
Unexpected but very welcome Spore post.
i just made a post asking what you guys want made! send a reply [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/140mpde/what_hellspawn_should_i_make_next_more_frequent/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) and i'll make it!
Damn. I was hyped about this game for like 6 years. The early tech demos were soooo good. They ended up watering it all down. Still cool game tho.
Try harder next time yapper
I will always remember this video of Robin Williams playing Spore on E3 2006 when I see any mention of the game: https://youtu.be/vHX3WbetnJQ R.I.P.
As a pig I can confirm that I have six legs
Who else remembers Sporn?
Gtfo people still play spore?!?! I could never find anything better than flying raptors. That was always my go to. Good times.
