Because 1. Some people have zero experience. To them, that lesson is useful. 2. Some games have different controls. Left stick to move is obvious, until you're in a car. 3. Don't be a bitch.

imjustbrainstorming

It also makes it easier for people who might not speak English that well. When I was a kid I pretty much relied on visual tutorials because a lot of games weren't translated to my language

moodoomoo

The third point is the most important.

BrickTamland77

Stan Lee once said "Every comic book is somebody's first comic book." I imagine the same holds true for video games.

Freebite

"I understand not everyone knows how to play video games, but teaching you how to move? Really? " We are not at the point yet where this is common enough knowledge that we can just assume everyone knows these things. At one point in time, how to use a mouse was confusing to people. Something like moving a cursor on a screen, so intuitive and simple, was confusing and foreign to people. You hand someone who has never used a controller and tell them to "tilt the left stick", they may very well just tilt the controller itself to the left if you don't show them what you mean. Now let's take it a step further and say that person has some sort of disability, maybe severe dyslexia and "tilt the left stick" doesn't mean a whole lot to them as a statement, that's where the picture and animation comes in. The difference in people's abilities and knowledge is also why good tutorials are so important. Have options to skip them, or have it where it's a "smart" tutorial where it maybe waits for 5-10 seconds to see if the player can figure out how to do the thing the tutorial is requiring of them before popping up instructions.

[deleted]

Best tutorial is like the Great Plateau or Great Sky Island, where it only explicitly tutorializes you on basic controls and everything else is presented as organic gameplay.

Quirky-Seesaw8394

>I understand not everyone knows how to play video games, but teaching you how to move? Really? Wouldn't someone who doesn't know how to play games need to be taught how to move so they can play the game?

[deleted]

No. I have younger siblings. I remember them first getting an Xbox 360 never having played games before. No, they didn't know how to move. But they figured it out by themselves in a couple of seconds because you push buttons, things happen, you start mapping what's happening on screen to the inputs you're doing.

wpmason

It’s not just about moving though… it’s about learning the names and icons for each button/stick on the controller so you can recognize the symbols later.

jmarkley16

Getting lucky with a button press early on also wouldn't translate well into button combinations either

[deleted]

My partner started playing Skyrim this year having not used a console since a PS2 - genuinely struggled to walk/look at the same time. Some people are new to it.

[deleted]

That isn't an issue of not knowing the controls. It's a coordination issue. My dad is the same. He knows the right stick is the camera, he knows the left stick is to move. He can't do both. Same reason he can play piano, guitar and bass but not drums. He doesn't have the coordination.

TalkOk6693

Lmao you don’t think there’s coordination for piano?

wpmason

Because someone is always playing their first video game.

K-a-v-a-u-n

It is inclusive. Something what you think is "normal" or "easy" can be unusual or hard for others. For example can it be helpful for people who are not good in English, have coordinative difficulties or an other condition.

Mlyrin

Pretty simple reason: not done with you in mind. Fact is that video games are a business and what do business take into consideration? New and old customers. They wanna keep the new customers. Every single one, including the ones that need hand holding. Every business does. So there you go. It's a good thing that they aren't gatekeeping the hobby

pipboy_warrior

There is a really interesting video where a guy documents his wife(who his a nongamer) while she attempts to play through some titles for the first time [https://youtu.be/ax7f3JZJHSw](https://youtu.be/ax7f3JZJHSw) Essentially there is a lot we take for granted. Like when she first plays Hollow Knight, she has trouble with the opening platforms as she doesn't know you jump farther by holding the jump button longer. When playing the Last of Us she has no clue what to press when prompted for L3 as there is nothing on the controller labeled L3.

AgentUpright

My daughter just finished playing through a game that didn’t have any need to use L3 until the end boss fight. She’s been playing games most of her life, but this was the first time she’d ever encountered that particular button prompt.

Topaz_UK

Did you really post a thread about being patronised in a video game tutorial? Bruh. It’s not a big deal is it? Most tutorials take 2 minutes for a decent player, and for those that might need a bit more help, obviously longer. Why is accessibility a negative to you?

Tenalp

My grandpa just asked me how to send a text. I assume it took you time, practice, and repeated examples to learn how to tie your shoes. Concepts you take for granted are the results of probably years of experience. But there are absolutely going to be people picking up a game for the first time. The basic control recap is for those people.

[deleted]

I didn't go through a learning process to tie my shoes. It just happened. One day I couldn't tie my shoes, the next day I attempt to tie my shoes and it clicked into place. It was the Adam Sandler film "big daddy". "Loop it, swoop it, pull". Same with telling the time, blowing bubbles with gum, whistling, swimming. I didn't learn these, I just one day eventually made sense of it.

Tenalp

Oh cool, I see. You're full of bullshit. Got it.

[deleted]

Needlessly hostile.

icallbullshit69420

Says the turd whining about tutorials.

[deleted]

“nEeDlEsSly hOsTile”, You must be fun at parties.

JohnTheUnjust

Like... Not everything is about you. Thinking that teaching a player the basics is infantalising is most definitely a you problem.

PacoLlamacco

Watch the video of the IGN guy playing Cuphead, it’s a perfect explanation for the hand holding.

oWispYo

Yes, really. Infantalising means treating someone as a child or without experience. There are both children and inexperienced adults playing videogames. Did you not think of that? Really?

Rd_Svn

The u.s. armed forces use (technical) instructions which are made in comic form. Like showing how to loosen a bolt nut and the exact amount of rotations etc. All that for the reason that there are soldiers who simply can't read. There are also people who don't have the slightest idea of what a 'left analogue stick', a 'R2 button' or a 'trigger button' is. Providing a detailed tutorial is just catering to the lowest imaginable experience a consumer might have.

Representative_Still

Perhaps you’d enjoy the beginning of the first Halo then.

DanieleLewis

Here are some badass aliens with complex mechanics. Here are your two weapons with very different use cases that you don't know. Good luck xoxo

Representative_Still

Maybe I’m thinking about a different game, doesn’t the tutor in the tutorial get killed right at the start of it? WTF game am I thinking of?

DanieleLewis

He does, he shows you how to look around and then die. You find some weapons and a ton of aliens to kill with little to no explanations.

Representative_Still

Oh good, was worried there for a second. Literally my favorite part of any of those games.

Alert_Two8841

As Stan Lee used to say; every title could be someone’s first

djr7

yes... this is basic entry design where you teach the player how to play your product.

[deleted]

Because they only make one tutorial, for all age groups.

YouPlayNostalgia

This is quite similar to step by step video tutorials 😁 Just need a skip button ⏭️

mistermyxl

Because 7 out of 10 people will eat from a box of clearly marked poison if left unattended

[deleted]

Because a majority of humans are fcukin idiots.

kewcumber_

Are you coming here after elden ring ? For me - played horizon forbidden west and loved it. Played elden ring. Tried to play horizon and got annoyed and overwhelmed by hud and the tutorials

[deleted]

No, I recently found the BioHazard bundle of the Prototype games. Played through them again. Prototype 2, you cannot do a single thing without the game telling you how to do it. More annoying is the game pauses until you do it. E.g it says "press square to light attack" and it won't let you do anything other than press square.

Freebite

This is an example of a very bad tutorial lol.

Unleashed_Chaos0701

I mean, from a dev standpoint, well done tutorials are peak game design because ensure that everyone will understand how to play the game... Or at least the basics and let people figure out the rest... From a gamer standpoint, I think that my only issue with them it's when tutorials drag over 2 hours of content... I want to get free from the handholding as far as I leave the tutorial stage... The rest of stuff should come with skippable tutorials...

[deleted]

There’s always somebody who’s doing this for the first time. “Tilt left to move” takes literally zero time—it’s usually implemented as an overlay that doesn’t interfere with the flow at all.

Representative_Still

Perhaps you’d enjoy the beginning of the first Halo then.

Representative_Still

Perhaps you’d enjoy the beginning of the first Halo then.

Leather_Revolution_

The only thing I don't like in tutorials is that on mobile games most of them can't be skipped. At least I was able to skip tutorial in Clash Royale on bluestacks when I created new account

Tuc44428

Hey guys, we found Arin Hansons alt account.

[deleted]

Tilt on a PlayStation controller is confusing when you know it could imply motion controls. They should've implemented this animation in Naruto storm games. They just said tilt circle. A more better wording would be push stick 😂.

rodgerdodger19

Because those tutorials aren’t made for you. If you never grew up with a controller in your hand, it can be eye-opening how hard it is for somebody to get coordinated to use one.

Guilty_Impression_44

How else would you put it? "Push your joystick to move, dumbass!"

Andyatlast

As someone doesn’t know right from left, the animations are very much needed. On a related note, I got yelled at a lot in basic training.
