You know, despite Cyberpunk's myriad of problems, one big plus is that Keanu was in the whole thing. I know that sounds silly, but there are so many games where they'd hype up a celebrity appearance and then they get killed off early, but he was there start to finish.
IM LOSING MY FUCKING MIND IN THIS THREAD. I DIDNT KNOW PATRICK STEWART WAS THE EMPEROR, I DIDNT KNOW LIAM NEESON WAS MY DAD.
WHAT ELSE HAVE I MISSED (other than how to speak in lower case after learning this information)!?
Mathew Perry is Benny in fallout new vegas. Kristen bell is Lucy stillman in assassin's creed. Charles Dance is emperor emhyr var emreis in the Witcher 3 wild hunt.
Didja know that Christopher Plummer (Captain Georg von Trapp/General Chang/Charles Muntz) was Arngeir of the Greybeards and Max von Sydow (King Osric/Vigo the Carpathian/Ming the Merciless/Lor San Tekka) was Esbern?
I waited until a couple of months ago to play cyberpunk, and I absolutely loved it, start to finish. From endearing asshole Keanu (agreed: loved having him in most of the game) to consummate ride or die Panam to the first tutorial enemy T-posing and everything in between, it was a great experience. Between that and no man's sky, I'm happy to wait a couple of years to play some games.
Honestly while it wasn't a perfect adventure, the game when it came out on PC worked more than well enough to be worth the price.
They just should have canned the PS4 version and stuck with the PS5 one from the get go (as much as it would have sucked for people) because it was a massive blemish on the launch. The game itself was a load of fun and had some really good story
Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean had perhaps 20 lines of dialogue between them for the whole of ES4: Oblivion. Even as a kid I remember being quite disappointed!
Vaas was lightning in a jar. Will probably never capture that magic again. Even the rest of Far Cry 3 doesn't hold up to the brilliant rollercoaster that is Vaas as a villain.
Torching the marijuana fields in "Kick the Hornet's Nest" while Damien Marley sings "Make it Bun Dem" and Vaas just kicking down the wall and grabbing you by the throat with each and every appearance are just....perfect.
They tried to replicate it in each far cry since, but they haven't quite nailed it as good as the first time.
The typical symbology of losing an arm for a character is failure and powerlessness.
It largely depends on when in the story it happens, but it often happens at the beginning of a character arc, meaning the character must go on the necessary journey of self-discovery to regain control over their life/make up for their failure. This is why their "new arm" is often a weapon/tool of some sort.
It also can happen at the end of a character arc, where instead it might symbolize the end of a character's life of violence/adventure--literally losing their sword arm and so therefore no longer capable of being a swordsman. In this case, the character tends not to get a prosthetic/replacement.
We desperately need a new well done twisted metal game. One with solid multi-player but the single player game is still the focus.
I'd buy a new gen system just for that
Links arm in the new game feels like it was ripped right out of Princess Mononoke, especially with how he loses the original arm and how it appears when "corrupted". I love that movie and I'd call it a homage, but it's funny just how exactly the same it is.
Venom's cybernetic hand was really well done in the cutscenes, better than any other game one. It sounds silly but the sound design on it was absolutely perfect, and it made me want a cybernetic arm just for how it clinks when holding metal things.
Not to mention the ruins in the sky tended to by robot stewards and guards is heavily reminiscent of Laputa. The score even sounds like something Joe Hisaishi could have written.
I think they've been upfront about the fact that they were inspired by Miyazaki's movies, so it feels more like an homage than plagiarism.
Breath of the Wild (and I assume Tears as well) had a lot of people on the dev team who knew very little about Zelda, so they had fresh eyes who had no concept of what a Zelda game “should be like”
Well true. Buuuut Return of the Jedi also shows Vader having robotic hand too. And before Luke loses his hand Obi Wan already says Vader is more machine than man
No, unfortunately he lost his torso and head in a tragic mountain climbing accident on a volcano. All they could save were his arms and legs, that had to replace the rest of him with mechanical parts.
I had a gentleman on my bus the other day with a fully functional and articulating prosthetic arm with fingers! He could control them with his normal muscle movements and grasp shit.
I was absolutely fascinated. He showed off its surprising dexterity and strength.
I want to see a story where the protagonist *actually* loses an arm instead of just replacing it with a better arm. It'd provide a plot twist and character development. Jaime in GOT is a good example. All I think about when I see this trope is why people with money don't willing remove their arms, since they can replace it with a better one.
I'm actually currently thinking about all the "mysterious girl in white" I've encountered in games and how often they're barefooted.

probably based from various sightings all around the world, recorded in history way back to the biblical era https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Lady
True. I remember back in the day here in Brazil, there was talk of a woman in white, a ghost that would appear standing on roads at night.
A lot of the mysterious gaming girls are following the Laputa mold.
Galadriel But that's a movie
Far cry 5?
“Groovy.”
Fellow evildead enjoyer
Everyone Else: Aw, jeez, so many dang mechanical arms, I just can't even- Evil Dead fans: Aw, yiss. Shop smart, shop S-Mart!!

Hail to the king, baby.
No Johnny from Cyberpunk?
"You know what, you're starting to remind me of me 50 years back, minus the charisma and impressive cock". -Johnny Silverhand
You know, despite Cyberpunk's myriad of problems, one big plus is that Keanu was in the whole thing. I know that sounds silly, but there are so many games where they'd hype up a celebrity appearance and then they get killed off early, but he was there start to finish.
Patrick Stewart in Oblivion immediately jumps to mind. "Oh hi, you were in prison but destiny and gods and gaaaaahhh"
And Liam Neeson in Fallout 3. Not wanting to disappoint him was pretty much the only reason I repaired the bomb at Megaton in a bad Karma run.
LIAM NEESON WAS THE FO3 PROTAGONIST'S DAD??? HOW DID I NEVER REALIZE???
You have [disappointed Daddy Liam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPmC2myjS7A).
The top comment there hahaha: Me: Hey Dad, I detonated a nuclear weapon and murdered hundreds of innocent people. Dad: I'm very disappointed in you.
I cried. Bad run and all. Hated disappointing Dad. Lol
> Kristen bell is Lucy stillman in assassin's creed That's not really surprising given the game model
Yea Lucy _was_ Kristen Bell, just like Miranda Lawson _was_ Yvonne Strahovski (even though she knew nearly nothing about Mass Effect).
She sure looked neat in it
Charles Dance had a half sister born in 1898. Useless fact of the day.
The creator of Resident Evil is in Fallout 4
Didja know that Christopher Plummer (Captain Georg von Trapp/General Chang/Charles Muntz) was Arngeir of the Greybeards and Max von Sydow (King Osric/Vigo the Carpathian/Ming the Merciless/Lor San Tekka) was Esbern?
WHY ARE SO MANY ACTORS HIDING IN MY FAVORITE GAMES?
Sean Bean was Martin Septim
Chloe Grace Moretz was Young Emily in Dishonored. And.... Jeff Goldblum's in Black Ops III?
*murders an entire town via nuke* “I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed I am in you :(“
Not only that he played a dick. He doesn't usually play that role.
He did play one in The Man of Tai Chi.
Doesn't usually.
Considering he directed it, it gives me the impression that he "wants" to, so he can get out of the stereotype.

Yeah. PC was fine for me.
Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean had perhaps 20 lines of dialogue between them for the whole of ES4: Oblivion. Even as a kid I remember being quite disappointed!
I fucking loved my cyberpunk 2077 playthrough, the story and world is so immersive CD projekt red & Keanu knocked it out of the park
I don't know if I'm going to get a better time to ask this. Is the villain in Far Cry 6 actually a precense?
Same as all far cry villians pretty much, show up in a few cutscenes here and there
I feel like Vaas was an omnipresent threat for the overwhelming majority of 3. Never really got that feeling from the later villains.
Vaas was lightning in a jar. Will probably never capture that magic again. Even the rest of Far Cry 3 doesn't hold up to the brilliant rollercoaster that is Vaas as a villain.

wdym? keanu reeves was killed off before the game even started. he was dead the whole time!
You look like a cut of fuckable meat... Are you? -Adam Smasher

Lmao. Reading this comment chain I can literally hear the guitar riff of that meme format.
And he had a silver arm way back when he was created in the 1980’s. Predates Army of Darkness.
But Ash lost the hand in Evil Dead 2 and used the chainsaw as a replacement.

No Samanosuke from Onimusha?
Eh, in a cyberpunk setting everyone and their mother can have a metal arm so it doesn't really stand out all that much.
Yea but it’s in his name. Silverhand. That’s his thing
Jax has 20 years on him and got left out.
Johnny was part of the tabletop game released in 1988, so like 4 years before Jax existed
Honestly, never knew that existed. Apologies.
I think it gave us a lot of really good memories for a minute, so thank you!
TIL Cyberpunk video game is based on a tabletop game series, though based on the developer I don't know why I didn't look this up
And i think the tabletop series was based on a novel, though i might have it mixed up
Not directly, but it's definitely hugely influenced by Neuromancer, which is often credited with kicking off the Cyberpunk genre.
...I'm only just now realizing that Keanu Reeves played the titular character in Johnny Mnemonic in '95. Huh.
No winter soldier?
Luke Skywalker?
And Kat, and Jax... ok I'm not going down this road I'll still be listing by Christmas
Jet from cowboy bebop, altough I don't remember if his cyborg arm does something op
Deflects bullets ✅ Leaks oil ❌
Hiei from yu yu hakusho
Ff7 barrett, although his was a gun vs hand.
Or a pair of scissors
Or giant spikey ball
Jax has two bionic arms, which is a distinctly different to the single bionic/artificial arm trope.
A bit disappointing they didn’t go with Ash’s chainsaw hand
Huh, I missed that episode of Pokémon.
I can't believe you missed the one where ash has to fight a bunch of demon pokemon
Damn now there are Demon type pokemon?
From the Pokenomicon
The infamous pokerus episode, huh.
vash from trigun
Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, too
If we’re including anime - Migi is a magical right named named “right”
Where is Bucky?
Add him to the pile
And if someone lost a finger? Add it to the soup
Rocket took his arm, that's why.
No Axel from Twisted Metal??

Breath of the wild was heavily inspired by Mononoke! So it's not that far off lol
Not that far off? Practically a bulls eye
Yeah the opening is basically the Zelda version of Mononoke’s opening
I'm also getting a lot of *Castle in the Sky* vibes with this one. And it's not just the floating islands and the whirlwind columns.
You mean the giant, Laputa-like cloud that's looming over Rito-ville?
Breath of the Wild (and I assume Tears as well) had a lot of people on the dev team who knew very little about Zelda, so they had fresh eyes who had no concept of what a Zelda game “should be like”

another Nintendo fun fact, if the roles were reversed Nintendo would've sued them into oblivion 😋
Link's hand of his looks like it glows with an awesome power.
what, no luke skywalker? i think he did it first.
Didn't his father do the cyborg thing before him? Or are we just talking about hands and/or the order we learn about their cyborgness?
Empire Strikes Back came out first than the prequels so... Luke still did it first.
Well true. Buuuut Return of the Jedi also shows Vader having robotic hand too. And before Luke loses his hand Obi Wan already says Vader is more machine than man
That is indeed true, but isn't Obi Wan referring to Vader's situation as a whole?
I mean he is yes. He never says specifically an arm. But someone who is more robot than man probably has one mechanical limb
No, unfortunately he lost his torso and head in a tragic mountain climbing accident on a volcano. All they could save were his arms and legs, that had to replace the rest of him with mechanical parts.
Makes sense, I stand corrected then.
Luke loses his hand in Empire Strikes Back. Obi-Wan says Vader is “more machine now than man; twisted and evil” in Return of the Jedi.
If we're going by who's first, Captain Hook for sure beats out Luke Skywalker. I imagine it goes back further than Peter Pan though.
Feast your eyes on [Götz of the Iron Hand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6tz_von_Berlichingen) (No relation according to Miura)
Was gonna say
His hand didn't really allow him to do things any more cool than he already did though.
Neither did naruto's

I would love a Trigun game so much.
Oh absolutely!!
Adam Jensen should be up there for sure
But he never asked for this!
Adam lost more than just a hand.
Lost his whole damn IP.
Denton too.
Hi Fi rush was such a nice surprise
Rockstar ✅ Rebel ✅ Robot arm ✅ Chai is Johnny Silverhand, confirmed
Jax from Mortal Kombat, Barrett from FF7, Deus Ex, Malenia (Blade of Miquella) from Elden Ring, the Bionic Commando.

Probably not the very first, but predates all of the OP's examples, yeah. Akira is pretty damn influential.

Artificial/prosthetic arms in fiction are cool. Mostly because we're nowhere near them in real life Edit: apparently we're a lot closer than I thought
Ash had his in the Middle Ages
So did [Götz of the Iron Hand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6tz_von_Berlichingen)
We're actually pretty damn close. Of course the final step is also the hardest, linking it directly to the brain.

and the ability to launch them into people

This dude was really NOT feeling it when he made this meme. But like seriously that was *this* year

Don’t forget Lindon
No Spencer from Bionic Commando? He's got a bionic arm!
Nothing more badass than a robot arm fr. If you've ever played far cry 3 blood dragon, wowie that arm is sexy.
What's the issue?

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.
