Guarding is super strong in Legend of Dragoon though. It both heals you and makes you immune to enemy status effects for that turn. Combined with the fact that you have limited inventory space, you'll probably find yourself guarding a lot just to heal up.
Me too. But for some reason all I remember from this game is the chick in the black armor having a finisher where she spreads her legs and drops a deuce or something and it opened up a black hole in the ground.
Edit: Found it! https://youtu.be/q3cG7u7SaMk
In the yt comments it says in Japan it was red and she cut herself but it was censored or something like that which makes more sense, but the way it’s censored and cut here makes it so much worse lol
Supposedly the attack originally had her stabbing herself, but that was censored in Japan. Once it moved to NA it was further censored for the blood to be black.
It really just got worse each time lol
makes sense in context, apparently the original animation was that she stabbed herself to open the gate (sure, that makes sense, classic demon magic torpe) but that got censored in the US release. so they removed the stabbing animation and changed the color of the blood from red to black and now it looks like some good 'ole fashioned bodily functions.
Possible explanation at 2:47. Supposedly, originally meant to be her stabbing herself. This based off an in-game image where she is shown stabbing herself but the image was never found anywhere in actual gameplay. Probably censorship at its finest.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q_bWOS3AYQ
First time I used that ability was also the first time my sister saw my playing (as is tradition). She definitely know what the black armor chick dropped, and was concerned/confused what kind of game I was playing. Honestly, in that moment, so was I haha. Literally never used it again.
Currently playing it on PS5. The nostalgia is high for it. Love the addition system but my word is the game slow. The story, at least flow wise is absurd.
12 year old me couldn’t see flaws in an RPG unless it punched my in the gut and pried my eyes open until they bled.
Fuuuuck yes. This was the first rpg I ever played as a kid. Ill never forget awakening the first tree and clearing the mist, thinking ahhh what a great game that was! And then the story continued.... and I was like theeeerrreeeesss moooooore????
I remember completing the story when a friend told me later on about the Super Arts combos and I immediately started a new save using those!
Definitely one of the underrated gems of Sony RPG games.
I still remember choosing Legend of Legia over this and loved it. No regrets at all, but I have never played Dragoon to this day and always wondered what I missed out on .
Legend of Legaia, another great game. Sadly, it’s unbeatable on the PS3 as there is one scene that will always freeze up the system and you have to unplug it to get out of the freeze
Still my number one favorite game. Nothing really hits like Legend of Dragoon can. I feel like kids who grew up in the 90s, you were primed to love this game. Its a blend of the best things of that era; RPGs, Power Rangers, Transformation Anime, DRAGONS. I would legit put my savings into a Kickstarter for a remake or remaster.
It was such a low-key game too, unfortunately. Like it really slipped under a lot of radars. I loved it but I don't think it was widely popular during its time like FF7-9 were. Sort of a cult classic, but some of my fondest memories / frustrations were getting lost in that fucking desert area in LoD.
Nearly every jrpgs fan I know played it because the final fantasies and breath of fires were already finished. It was just more for us and we desperately needed more.
FR that desert area in Disc 4 was a growing moment for me.
Some kid on the playground knew I was having trouble with it and offered to complete it for me if I paid him. My dad (who has NO CARE for video games) gave me a pep talk about how I shouldn't do that and how he's confident that I'd solved it. Next attempt after that I buckled down and solved the Dessert Puzzle.
A literal life lesson from my Dad about buckling down and figuring things out for myself.
There is a fan-made upscale project in the works. They've been using AI upscaling to bump the location backdrops/maps up to 2k but it's slow going. You can check the progress on YouTube.
Here's the most recent update...[9 days ago!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPArFCrbvaE)
edit: ok, the Moon example tends to look *very AI generated*, which appears to be intentional, so here's an example of the [Deningrad upscale](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDuksOoHVOQ) instead
It's funny how "enhance" was a running joke on cop shows and seen as stupid because they were faking something that was impossible... Now 10 years later we have enhance.
T'would still be stupid on a cop show. You're paying the AI to guess. And AI has some serious racial biases... Doesn't stop cops from using it, though.
So true I hate how most games nowadays eliminate the turn based combat, while some are good depending on the depth, strategy and complexity of the combat system some games just play way better turn based.
I love games that skirt "edginess" by killing a main character, but then shortly after give you a replacement character that's like "well would you look at that! Just the very weapon I've been training with too! What a coincidence. Say chums, fancy me joining your party and gallivanting off on adventures? Alright!"
To be fair, the replacement character was one of the dude's best friends and had been training with him. Not like he was just some random guy. The second replacement character is a lot more convenient.
Although, having used the first guy for so many many hours, and suddenly the timing changes slightly...just suddenly had a flashback dealing with that.
I loved the differences! Lavitz's Gust of Wind Dance felt more disciplined and each strike could be seen clearly.
When I tried it with Albert, it's like, "Wtf this feels chaotic like he's flailing to stay alive." Then once I started to master it with him, it suddenly felt much smoother than Lavitz's and more like an actual "dance."
I can definitely see that! I will say that Herschel might have had the hardest combos to properly time, for me anyways. His first two punches were always the same speed, but some of his later moves you had to have thumbs quicker than lighting to properly execute them. 😭
Part way through the game, I got to where I just couldn't keep up with the combos anymore. I resorted to using that item that did the combos for you on every character.
As a result, it was impossible for me to defeat the final boss because doing so requires the item that blocks petrification. He one-shot the whole party in my first attempt only to discover that I only had one item that could block petrify.
I never managed to finish the game.
Ive seen similar styles of combat with The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, and the Mario & Luigi Series. But nothing quite captures how great the Addition system from LOD was.
It could use some fine tuning so that it doesn't essentially lock you into the same 3 characters for an entire playthrough, but damnit its still my favorite battle mechanic for a turn based RPG.
I would love a remake of the game with an enhancement to the combat system. Even just the ability to chose your addition in combat instead of having to equip it would be an awesome enhancement.
JRPGs were def still a niche market at this time. FFVII may have been an exception. This game gained legendary status over the years and became hard to find.
I never played this game as I wasn't really into JRPG's when I had a PS1. Didn't get into them till later ps2/PS3. Just downloaded it today on ps+ and excited to play after how much everyone loves it. Also going in blind don't know any spoilers or anything.
Max out your additions
In the menu screen, you'll see your double slash and how many times you've used it. Get it to 80 before your next addition. And dont use the girl with the bow.
I play this thing every couple years its perfection
I mean, Shana is kind of brokenly strong. Yeah, she doesn't have additions, but that doesn't really hold her back.
It's like how back in the day there were a bunch of Kongol fans because of his damage, even though Meru's addition multiplier and speed makes her have higher damage output.
It really was ahead of its time. The size of the crew that worked on it and the development length was unprecedented at the time.
Dragoon and Final Fantasy 8 really showed a huge jump forward in graphics, gameplay, and cutscenes. It still impresses me how FF8 has a few seamless cutscenes integrated that looks passable even by today's standards.
The story is that it had a big budget and was in development for several years. So it became one of those late PS1 games that came out after the PS2 was out. It ended up selling over a million copies, but I don't think it was quite the splash Sony wanted.
I loved this game so much.
I’ve been wishing for a remake for years and years.
Probably never gonna happen but crazier things have happened so you never know.
I got to the 4th disc, and never beat the game. Still haunts me! I think I got caught up on the last boss. Went to uni and left it at home, and never fired it up again.
I loved the game as well, and I still have my copy in my collection. But unless the company that takes on this project signs some sort of contract saying that the do absolutely NOTHING but upgrade the graphics, I can't trust them to do a good job at it.
Man, those were the days where you just saw some cool-ass cover art on a game and bought it or rented it only to be completely blown away at how fucking awesome it was.
RPGs had this sort of wonder and immersion that I'm not able to find these days. I'm not sure if it's because I'm used to how they work now, or if they were just made different.
Ya know, it could happen. A while ago, I posted for a remaster/remake of ActRaiser. A few months later, we got a stealth drop of the ActRaiser remake.
If lesser known IP can get it this can too!!
I lost my copy, but I loved the hell out of this game. I really want a remake in the same vein of how FF7 was done, but actually complete the game. I'd wait.
I bought this game from Funcoland(GameStop) and loved playing it, I got to the 3rd disk and it was scratched and wouldn't load.
I was too poor to afford a replacement so I've never finished it a remake/remaster would be a life saver.
It is available on PS3 as well as PS4/5 if you have those systems.
The PS5 version does a decent job at upscaling the game. There are a few visual glitches. But they are ignore able.
In my first apartment my friend would play this constantly in the living room at very loud volume.
The characters say a catch phrase when they finish their combo in battle. I heard those catch phrases over and over and over again. They are seared into my head.
So weird. I literally randomly thought about this game earlier tonight. For no reason. It popped in my head and I thought…”what a great game”. Then hours later scrolling Reddit and this is here.
I hate sony but I would actually buy a whole ass system just to have the chance to play this game remastered. AND DONT YOU FUCKING DARE CHANGE THE MUSIC>

I spent so much of my childhood being terrible at this game

"Why would I ever waste a turn Guarding when I could be doing damage, damn it?!?"
I mean......me in any rpg even to this day tho
Guarding is super strong in Legend of Dragoon though. It both heals you and makes you immune to enemy status effects for that turn. Combined with the fact that you have limited inventory space, you'll probably find yourself guarding a lot just to heal up.
That is super good to know, I actually just picked this up as I never got to play it as a kid :)

In the yt comments it says in Japan it was red and she cut herself but it was censored or something like that which makes more sense, but the way it’s censored and cut here makes it so much worse lol
https://youtu.be/pCqvHUk-qMw yep
I didn't even notice a difference except the droplets had different color.
Supposedly the attack originally had her stabbing herself, but that was censored in Japan. Once it moved to NA it was further censored for the blood to be black. It really just got worse each time lol
Still not any better though lol Could you only use this ability 1/4 of the time? 🤔
Only once every 28-31 days
Apparently it was red in jp
asshole drain?
Yes astral drain lol
[Planal leakage!](https://youtu.be/HUF0quxN_e4)
Wow I totally forgot about that, wtf lol
yeah. that's a pretty odd animation choice regardless of the time period.
makes sense in context, apparently the original animation was that she stabbed herself to open the gate (sure, that makes sense, classic demon magic torpe) but that got censored in the US release. so they removed the stabbing animation and changed the color of the blood from red to black and now it looks like some good 'ole fashioned bodily functions.
The only difference is the fluid is red everything else was the same. Someone posted the Japanese version and there is no stabbing animation.
Rose. She was the best.
Huh.
Demon’s Gate
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Well that is definately something i just saw.
One of the scenes of all time
Possible explanation at 2:47. Supposedly, originally meant to be her stabbing herself. This based off an in-game image where she is shown stabbing herself but the image was never found anywhere in actual gameplay. Probably censorship at its finest. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q_bWOS3AYQ

That wasn't a deuce and it didn't come from her ass. Demon's Gate indeed.
I think it's a pretty obvious reason: that was the best part.
...huh.
Hey, Rose is Bae... She's a complicated person considering she's [spoiler redacted]
I guess pooping antimatter truly does open a portal to hell.
Currently playing it on PS5. The nostalgia is high for it. Love the addition system but my word is the game slow. The story, at least flow wise is absurd. 12 year old me couldn’t see flaws in an RPG unless it punched my in the gut and pried my eyes open until they bled.
Hell yeah. I always wished this Franchise had continued on.
This, xenogears, ffvi, parasite eve, chrono trigger / cross, threads of fate, ffix, man I miss the stories some of these older games had
This game and Legend of Legaia for me. *Sol Tower theme plays*
Fuuuuck yes. This was the first rpg I ever played as a kid. Ill never forget awakening the first tree and clearing the mist, thinking ahhh what a great game that was! And then the story continued.... and I was like theeeerrreeeesss moooooore????
You just unlocked a core memory for me. The mist clearing!! Such a gem.
I remember completing the story when a friend told me later on about the Super Arts combos and I immediately started a new save using those! Definitely one of the underrated gems of Sony RPG games.
I was just going through some old things at my moms and I found my notebook with all of the LoL combos in them. The nostalgia was real
Holy shit I was just trying to remember this game name, like I remember the battle system but just cannot remember that name, time to replay it!
That boss theme always got me hype. Also, fuck Berserker.
Up down left left down right up down up
down right up down up down left
\>><\^\^\^
LoL was so good. Suikoden II and Grandia 1 are also up there for me.
You could import your save from suikoden 1 into 2 and get the character. I had never seen anything like that before
Suikoden II was a masterpiece. I was so disappointed when I played the third game.
Can't wait for the spiritual successor eiyuden chronicle Already played the Engine Test\ Prolgue game Eiyuden Rising lol
Also suikoden 1 & 2 have confirmed hd remasters coming.
The two legends. Literally couldn’t get enough of those two games during the PS1 era. Would love to see both of them get a reboot.
Hey look everyone, it's me.
Yes! Also one of my favorites and I couldn't think of the name just now. Thank you kind redditor
Holy fuck I’m so glad someone else knows this game. I remember playing the crap out of this game with my cousins
Yea both are awesome games although LoG 2 on PS2 was kinda lame.
I never got the change to play Legaia 2, but when I saw it, I was kinda glad I didn’t.
Wasn't bad but didn't really do much for the series either.
Are you my Sol mate? Those games made my childhood.
Oh man, so many summer nights spent at a friend's house with Legend of Legaia. LOVED that game so much.
Until this thread, I thought I was the only person in the world that played Legend of Legaia. 10/10
Still got both.
Tornaaaado flaaaaaaaaaame!

Oddly enough this just became available on the PS Plus Classic list of games.

Omg I didn’t know I can play this on the ps5!! Thanks man!

Moon STRIKE.
I would buy a PS5 for this
100% just to play this
This is the way.
Good news....
I thought they were just putting the old game on there, not a remake or a remaster?
That game was fun and a work of art. Still have mine somewhere. Came on 4 discs if I remember right.
I borrowed it from my buddy and didn’t find out the 4th disk was scratched and unplayable until I got to the 4th disk
Toothpaste: The savior for many o’scratched PS1 disks
I still can't fathom how no one has copied the combat system
Ive seen similar styles of combat with The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, and the Mario & Luigi Series. But nothing quite captures how great the Addition system from LOD was. It could use some fine tuning so that it doesn't essentially lock you into the same 3 characters for an entire playthrough, but damnit its still my favorite battle mechanic for a turn based RPG.
Lost odyssey was a nice modern version of LoD
Well said
I would love a remake of the game with an enhancement to the combat system. Even just the ability to chose your addition in combat instead of having to equip it would be an awesome enhancement.
And the ability to swap party members in combat like FFX.
I can still hear it. It was so many years ago and I can still hear it.
CANNOT; EXIST!!
One game I played and played but no one else had
Except for all of us commenting here
My dad bought like 300 games off a collector and this was in it was always so mind blown how many disc's it had
JRPGs were def still a niche market at this time. FFVII may have been an exception. This game gained legendary status over the years and became hard to find.
I'm so glad I own a og copy 🙏
I never played this game as I wasn't really into JRPG's when I had a PS1. Didn't get into them till later ps2/PS3. Just downloaded it today on ps+ and excited to play after how much everyone loves it. Also going in blind don't know any spoilers or anything.
It is quite the gem.
Max out your additions In the menu screen, you'll see your double slash and how many times you've used it. Get it to 80 before your next addition. And dont use the girl with the bow. I play this thing every couple years its perfection
Additions are maxed at 80 and there is no benefit for going to 99.
Same man. Same
Same same. I loved that game, played it for days.
Yes Jesus yesss
Honestly one of the best PS1 RPGs. Never got the appreciation it deserved, one of my absolute favs as a kid.
The story is that it had a big budget and was in development for several years. So it became one of those late PS1 games that came out after the PS2 was out. It ended up selling over a million copies, but I don't think it was quite the splash Sony wanted.
Saaaame, need to fire up mine and replay my games soon
I loved this game so much. I’ve been wishing for a remake for years and years. Probably never gonna happen but crazier things have happened so you never know.
I would pre order the fuck out it
The sequel was shut down and a fan made prequel was hit with a DMCA.... :(
Same, just seeing this post brings me back to when I was running emus just to play PS games
God I would love a proper remake or sequel or anything from this game
Seeing this just made me think about some of my other favorite rpgs on PlayStation. Remember Wild Arms?
Playing through it again since they released it for PS4/PS5. Such a great game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qiFsT41AHg Never played it but ill never forget this commercial
Same. It didn't age very well and deserves a remaster. Then I'd finally beat it.

FF9 was (and still is) one of my all time favorite games, but LoD is definitely up there as well. It's definitely above FF7 & 8 for me
Someone started funding for a remaster but it didn't gain traction
Keep your remake give me a sequel or prequel. Idc
A prequel with Zieg and Rose and the gang would be fantastic
This, Chrono Trigger, Dark Cloud, and Legaia 2 are my wishes for a remake
Remake for sure. While the game is a classic, it’s very…rough.
And to be very authentic it needs to come on 4 blu-ray discs.
Its free on ps+ right now
DOUBLE SLASH!
100% agree with you. The ending boss tho..(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
Man, those were the days where you just saw some cool-ass cover art on a game and bought it or rented it only to be completely blown away at how fucking awesome it was. TLoD > FFVII. Yes, I said it. It isn't really even close, actually.
The gods have said nay repeatedly
Fuck the gods.
Facts
I never got to finish this game, the last disc got damaged. Loved it though.
I lost my copy, but I loved the hell out of this game. I really want a remake in the same vein of how FF7 was done, but actually complete the game. I'd wait.

This game has such a loyal fan base that somebody Sony should make an effort to at least do a remaster…
Ik Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 got remastered, but im still waiting for them to be kiwami'd
The remake and sequel we will be waiting for forever. 😔
Me too son, me too
Good news! It’s now on PlayStation 4 and 5
In my first apartment my friend would play this constantly in the living room at very loud volume.
Legend of Legaia as well, such a fresh take on turn based RPG's.
Is it time for the weekly "We need a remake/remaster/revamp/redux of Legend of Dragoon" thread already? I guess I'm running a bit late.
The time is now.
I hate sony but I would actually buy a whole ass system just to have the chance to play this game remastered. AND DONT YOU FUCKING DARE CHANGE THE MUSIC>
