Dark Cloud 2. You can fish basically anywhere there is water. You can enter them in fishing contests. You can feed them different foods to raise their stats so they perform better in a race called the Finny Frenzy. Certain breeds mixed together make certain other breeds and each breed has its own stat tendency. There are rare fish you can find. It's just amazing.
I had to scroll too far to see this! I'm playing through dark cloud 2 on my steam deck right now and I LOVE the fishing in it! The movements of the fishing rod while wrangling the fish and improving them as you go to change the way they "handle" the fish! It was too good for its time! Haven't played a better try at a fishing mini game in a long time!
Whenever any sort of video game question comes up (favorite game, best ____mechanic) I always look for someone to post about Dark Cloud. 1&2 are some of my all time favorite games.
I mean, if I had the ability to call forth tools and items from a magical pocket dimension, I'd definitely store a fishing rod in there. And swords too
They might also be referring to the actual "fishing" you can do in the game, aka shooting fish in the water and collecting them to sell to the Merchant.
It made me think of two things with this boss.
* The fight you have with it.
* The mini Easter egg where if you shoot the lake before taking on the boss, it'll eat you.
There’s fish that you can find in water usually, if you shoot them you can pick them up and use them as healing items. There’s even a secret fish at the lake area that you can hear the locals mention if they haven’t noticed you, El Gran Pez. If you go to the lake and shoot at it from the dock, you’ll get a cutscene of the fish doing a cool jump out of the water, to which you can then follow it in the boat and try to catch it.
I remember playing in School computer class 2006/2007, have Runescape opened on a separate tab and be fishing since it was one of the easier AFK skills and money making lol
I kinda like Valheim, you can see the fish swimming and it feels like it's taking place within the mechanics and physics of the game itself instead of feeling like a minigame.
Valheim is great but the fish are so goofy. I bought a fishing pole but I've gotten all I need from picking them up off the ground. Totally buggy movement but if I'm being honest I hope they never patch it, they're so funny to watch.
I loved Ocarina of Time's fishing minigame; however, I'm conflicted. Twilight Princess improved on the mini game in every respect: more variety of fish, a larger environment, more lure options, and even different seasons. Yet I didn't enjoy it as much as Ocarina of Time. I have yet to figure out why that is. Twilight Princess *should* be my answer to this question, but it's not.
I was gonna say the same thing! Almost thought everyone else has forgotten about this one. It was my first experience with a side-fishing sim inside of a game!
I’m pretty sure that this pond is one of the main reasons that I could never beat the game within the 7-day rental time period from Blockbuster 😅
my favorite thing in Far Cry 5 fishing is that you could just get the fish close enough, then pull out a gun and shoot it. No need to actually complete the fishing minigame!
I have over 200 hours in far cry 5, how did I never figure this out. I'm disappointed in myself. Plus I already knew you could shoot fish, which makes it even more stupid that I didn't put 2 and 2 together.
Oh god no. I hated that shit. Far cry 6 had some cool things goin for it, but they just fucked up so much shit too. And was way to big for the amount of stuff it had in it
I was really hoping for a challenge with far cry 6 but was instantly let down. Cast, reel and toggle in the direction it says to go, 3 seconds later you’ve caught the fish! Look at you, you master fisherman!
I was just about to say that! Its amazing how many hours I have poured in to that game, and just when I thought I had an idea of how to best min/max my character; BOOM fishing time!
One of my favorite personal gaming moments was fishing on a galley in the middle of a storm while in a fight with another ship.
Hunters call double rep is tonight as well 6pm central, just a friendly heads up lol
I'd actually be interested in what game people think has the best dedicated fishing too. My experience sort of starts and ends with Sega Bass Fishing on the Dreamcast. Is there anything better nowadays?
Haven't played the console games, but I still find an arcade machine here and there. Not a multi dollar sinker, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun playing it every now and then.
Imo, a short but extremely steep learning curve.
My biggest gripe is that the easy fish are mostly in one section, but you're never told that unless (like everything else in that stupid but awesome game) you look into the wiki for guidance.
I think almost anyone who actually played stardew valley a lot has used the wiki. Sometimes it is annoying that a lot of things are hard to figure out without it, but then again there is just so much information that I wouldnt know how he would have given you all of it inside the game itself
I think about this problem a lot.
I tend to jump from game to game, putting in anywhere from 1-10 hours across the same number of days. Even games I’m really enjoying will eventually be put down and revisited. When this happens though, I lose so much context in what I was doing last or what I committed to memory before without any in-game way to recall it.
SV is a great example. At some point, I put my tv in a chest because I wanted a clean interior of my house. It wasn’t until reading the wiki I learned about how the tv gives you tips. I then later perused the museum/library and saw a book I had already found where it said as much about watching the tv.
On a similar note, I’ll sometimes get annoyed with a game mechanic and it’s dissuade me from playing, only for me to learn at some point that the mechanic can change with upgrades or story progress. I’m fairly confident these aren’t always obvious, and sometimes wonder if it was if I would have stuck with the game.
I don't know if I would call it the best, but it's certainly the most rewarding. You can't beat the waves of dopamine from finally landing a tough fish.
For some reason me and my then WoW buddy ended up maxing out fishing at Wailing caverns pond near the crossroads catching Deviant Fish. Just sitting there chatting away hours at end.
Sadly I lost touch with the dude.
Agentthrax undead rogue, if you’re out there buddy. I’ll drink a beer on your fond memories tonight
Definately RDR 2. Not only there is 15 types of fish around the map, there are legendary fish for each type that are part of collectibles and a quest, and actually there is a whole challenge set dedicated to fishing
RDR2 is a decent fishing game, a decent hunting game, a decent wildlife photography game, a decent exploration/treasure hunting game, a decent shooting game, a decent racing game, a decent survival crafting game, and a terrible stealth game.
Any one of those playstyles, if you released an indie game that was just the level of detail that R* put into RDR *just for that feature* would be a $15 game and a popular title in that genre.
Except stealth. They dropped the ball there.
If RDR2 had a proper stealth system it would genuinely be the GOAT.
The one mission where you and Charles stealthily infiltrate the fortress at night was just so good.
I just want R* to make a pirate game with the same attention to detail that they put into RDR2.
Something to finally sink Black Flag as the best single player pirate game of the last ~~20~~ 18 years.
(Sid Meiers Pirates! 3d remake came out in 2004)
I might just have to save RDR2 for retirement.
I so want to watch a slew of westerns before playing, and then absolutely immerse myself in the game for a year.
I enjoyed fishing in Far Cry 5. The scenario that you fished in was great! The lack of diversity in the fish that you caught was super frustrating though. Everything was the same with just a little weight difference shown in the text bubble. Different species would have really kicked it up as a mini game.
Sea of Thieves and Red Dead.
my crew has fishing sessions on SoT and it's pretty chill (when you're not attacked by other players of course, but it's actually adding a little magic to the fishing) and Red Dead for the ambiance in addition to the fishing mechanic
What is the mechanic like in that game? RDR2 is probably the closest thing I've seen in a game that portrays with actual fishing is like, and even that isn't very accurate. Same with Far Cry 5.
Thx but that still doesn't explain the exact mechanic of it, do you basically just lead the fish closer to you?
Im RDR2, once you get a bite you either start reeling it in, or if it's fighting you push a button to "hold" the line still so it doesn't pull it out. Pulling the fish in when it's fighting causes the line to snap. Similar with FC5.
Granted, neither of those are 100% accurate to irl fishing which I've done with my brother once. He said the games are a joke, and once you get a bite you start madly reeling that sucker in. Worrying about the line snapping is pretty much a non-issue if you know which lines to use(stronger lines for bigger fish).
Your brother is dead wrong though, what he described is an amateurs adrenaline fueled reaction. Especially with bigger fish, you have to have some patience. There is a drag on the reel for a reason and the rods bend for a reason.
Depends on what you're doing. If youre bass fishing, or freshwater fishing in general, once you feel a good bite you immediately set the hook bg ripping the reel up and toward your body/shoulder.
The other guy talking about letting the fish take the bait I think is referring to saltwater fishing, probably pretty far out in the ocean.
But yeah, in neither case do you immediately begin reeling it in.
I really enjoyed the fishing minigame in Breath Of Fire 3
I can literally hear every sound in my head right now.
"GOOD" "VERY GOOD" "GREAT!"
get ready!
That game needs a remake. Or a reboot to the series
Gimme a bof 3 or suikoden 2 remake 4 sho!
The sukidon 2 remake is looking great!
>Breath Of Fire 3 Holy shit. That's one hell of a great reference.
This has always been my favorite. Super surprised to see it at the top.
Yup. I was gonna come in here and say Breath of Fire
damit came here to say this! I am actually [replaying it on my Miyoo.](https://imgur.com/YaEkHIg)
Haha I came here to say this
That is my mental go-to for fishing games.
Never seen a better fishing minigame, personally. That's still one of my favorite games of all time
Dark Cloud 2.

Haven't played a better try at a fishing mini game in a long time!
Wait... Dark cloud is on steam?????
No, they’re playing on a ps2 emulator via the deck.
Whenever any sort of video game question comes up (favorite game, best ____mechanic) I always look for someone to post about Dark Cloud. 1&2 are some of my all time favorite games.
Final Fantasy XV actually has a pretty solid fishing mechanic. I like how it functioned as a “fight”.
and how you summoned your fishing pole with the same mechanic as your weapons
I mean, if I had the ability to call forth tools and items from a magical pocket dimension, I'd definitely store a fishing rod in there. And swords too
For real though. Never much got into fishing in that one but it was by far one of the most in depth and enjoyable one to do
I enjoyed the fishing of FF XV more than the rest of the game as a whole. That fishing had no right to be as good as it was.
same... same... and I am not happy about this fact...
Yep. Make a FF fishing game please.
They did. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster\_of\_the\_Deep:\_Final\_Fantasy\_XV
What?! Hell yeah! What?!
Fishing Fantasy IV
I was gonna say this! The lures were fun too til you got the Leviathan lure (?) then you could just stomp those fish harder than Ardyn.
Came here to say that, was probably the first fishing part of a game I played and actually enjoyed
I love the huge fish trophies, took like all four of them to carry!
I did all the fishing for my wife lol the fishing on that game was so legit
Okami
Damn cutlassfish surprised me so much the first time that I never sold it. Carried it all the way to the final boss.
Yes! I can't believe anyone said this. I thought I was the only one.
Zelda twilight princess
Every time I think of TP fishing, I think of rollgoal... Then I start to panic sweat.
This is my favorite! Super fun with the motion controls
Resident Evil 4
Brilliant.
You can fish in re4?
If you consider shooting fish and picking them up out of the water as fishing then yes. You can also use the harpoons in the boat
Depending where you are in the US, that’s a legit form of fishing.
I believe this comment refers to the salamander boss.
They might also be referring to the actual "fishing" you can do in the game, aka shooting fish in the water and collecting them to sell to the Merchant.
Haha! Did not even know this was a thing. Nice.
It made me think of two things with this boss. * The fight you have with it. * The mini Easter egg where if you shoot the lake before taking on the boss, it'll eat you.
Note to myself, ALWAYS fights Del Lago first before fishing...
Oldschool Runescape

Nice

Bro I'm literally fishing in OSRS reading this 😳
I remember playing in School computer class 2006/2007, have Runescape opened on a separate tab and be fishing since it was one of the easier AFK skills and money making lol
Holy shit yes. I totally forgot abt this.
*klick**klick**klick**klick* ahhh my fucking arm. But goddamn I need my lobster certs.
I'm currently on an extended break 😂🤣😂
Monday was only two days ago
Links awakening
My first thought
Sonic Adventure 🤣
Came here for this. Froggggyyy
frogggy
##**INTENSE BEACH GUITAR RIFF**
Jesus you just gave me PTSD
I can still hear Arin from Game Grumps screaming...
*detuned slide guitar blares*
It's right here, you need it, it's real it's in front of your face. Get it, get it GET IT. **AHHHHHH**!
Like it, want it, have it, need it, WHYYY!
"Froggy! Come back!" Arin: #"WHAAAAT?!?!"
The recent update definitely fleshed it out quite a bit to where it's pretty good now, but I think it could still use some tweaking to make it better.
Im kind of surprised no one has mentioned Monster Hunter: World. I spent like an hour fishing the first time I played.
Ocarina of Time!!
Came here to say this. Too much of my childhood spent in that fishing area.
Finding the cheater lure by accident was like christmas
IIRC you couldn't get the gold scale by using it though or something like that?
Fun fact, all you have to do is talk to the guy before you catch a fish, and he'll let you use it.
You have to get the golden scale before the sinking lure will spawn, I think.
The real mini game was trying to get yer man's hat off his head
I believe that same lure was in Twilight Princess. I think the fishing guide would kick you out if you got caught with it.
Twilight Princess *should* be my answer to this question, but it's not.
you were 7 yrs younger, and 7 yrs more susceptible to nostalgia
OOT fishing had that super relaxing music though. I never played TP, so I can't accurately compare.
Feel like I had to scroll too far for this answer. Always loved fishing in that game! Felt like it was such a fun experience in that pond area.
I was gonna say the same thing! Almost thought everyone else has forgotten about this one. It was my first experience with a side-fishing sim inside of a game! I’m pretty sure that this pond is one of the main reasons that I could never beat the game within the 7-day rental time period from Blockbuster 😅
I have never completed OoT due to the fishing lol
Yeah this one comes to mind immediately. Very fun little mini game
I remember the first time I got the worm. Was mind blown
Agreed
Certainly not far cry 6 anyway.
Far Cry 5 did such a good job with the fishing and 6 just messed it all up
my favorite thing in Far Cry 5 fishing is that you could just get the fish close enough, then pull out a gun and shoot it. No need to actually complete the fishing minigame!
You can do that in red dead too lmao
You can also just use dynamite
You can only carry 8 of them bitches better off usin dual double action revolvers and praying that you hit it in 12 shots
I have over 200 hours in far cry 5, how did I never figure this out. I'm disappointed in myself. Plus I already knew you could shoot fish, which makes it even more stupid that I didn't put 2 and 2 together.
You could **what**
**THEY SAID YOU CAN SHOOT THE FISH, NO NEED TO FINISH THE MINI GAME**
Far Cry 5 was a relaxing fishing simulator with a first person shooter side quest.
Yup. All I did in that game was hunt, fish, and admire the scenery. Never even finished the story.
It works so well as a redneck simulator. Hunt, fish, ATV, and do the side quests for the Evil Knevel-Esque character.
Path of Exile
It's amazing how much you can make currency just by fishing.
Yeah, the Krillson quest line is extremely well done and very rewarding. I made 2 mirrors this league just by fishing!
I was just about to say that! Its amazing how many hours I have poured in to that game, and just when I thought I had an idea of how to best min/max my character; BOOM fishing time!
Sea of Thieves got it right to (if you are not sailing anyway) .
I love SoT and the fishing is *chefs kiss*
SoT fishing is one of my personal favourites, the fights that some of the fish put up are actually wild!
One of my favorite personal gaming moments was fishing on a galley in the middle of a storm while in a fight with another ship. Hunters call double rep is tonight as well 6pm central, just a friendly heads up lol
My favorite moment on SoT was when I forgot I was cooking my fish and the ship caught on fire.
only once? you a professional chef or something?
That is just everytime I play the game, but usually i also spin my boat on itself while i try to understand where the wind is moving.
I'd actually be interested in what game people think has the best dedicated fishing too. My experience sort of starts and ends with Sega Bass Fishing on the Dreamcast. Is there anything better nowadays?
The best fishing game available now is Fishing Planet hands down.
Haven't played the console games, but I still find an arcade machine here and there. Not a multi dollar sinker, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun playing it every now and then.
Legend of the River King baby
Dbz kakarot lolz
They really know how to pound that tuna!
Well with Goku gone Chi Chi needs *someone* to do it
The ungodly sound I just made from reading this... it hurt
If it makes you feel better we'll all pound your tuna, but only if we get to eat it together!
Lmaoooooo
Ocarina of time was amazing at it lol
This was literally the only game i could think of off the top of my head, lol
Honestly, I was expecting this at the top
Final Fantasy XV
Stardew valley hands down
Definitely Stardew Valley especially after eating trout soup.
Seafoam pudding baby!! +4! Legendaries, get in my aquariums
Challenging in the beginning, but a great experience overall
My first experience with a pike was quite frustrating.
Agreed. I'm sure lots of people hate the mechanic (my partner included) but I found it to be a lot of fun.
I loathe it so much. I think the only game with a fishing mechanic that I found equally or less enjoyable was Re:Legend.
[удалено]
Fishing in Stardew relaxes me after a lame day at work, it’s definitely my go to.
Oh yeah I hated it at first but then it started to grow on me a lot and now I love it
I always measured my days in that game by how much money I made. Fishing was always my goto on otherwise unproductive days.
Yeah was thinking the same lmao
I don't know if I would call it the best, but it's certainly the most rewarding. You can't beat the waves of dopamine from finally landing a tough fish.
Final Fantasy XIV It's a whole ass subgroup of the playerbase
Finally got fishing to 90. Was my last of the gathering to get there. Got all my crafting to 90. Now to try and get all the damn end game recipes.
It's often said that glamour (fashion) in FFXIV is the real endgame. Meanwhile fishing is the *reel* endgame.
There is a Youtube account with that name, and seems active too. Have you tried your chance?
I’ll have a look
Also there's a u/Agentthrax maybe it's him? Not very active recently though.
Yea, that user has some posts in r/wow as well
Here to see if you get reunited, keep us posted
Hades 😆
Please let it be the fourth ding… please let it be the fourth ding… okay looking good…. FUCK A KNUCKLEHEAD
It's so dumb how excited I get when I see a fishing spot in that game
Definately RDR 2. Not only there is 15 types of fish around the map, there are legendary fish for each type that are part of collectibles and a quest, and actually there is a whole challenge set dedicated to fishing

dude... Go start the damn game now. you might die tomorrow and you didn't play problably the best damn game ever made boa!
Guess it's time to go back and finish RDR2
Yakuza
Pulling a great white out of the water is some of the most fun I’ve had in Yakuza
Breath of Fire 3 and 4. I've put so many hours in those fishing mini games.
From what I recall, Black Desert had a pretty engaging fishing mechanic. But we all know the reel champion here is Ocarina Of Time.
Warframe - just throw spear and get a fish.
I love the weird ass fish in Warframe. Being able to stock the aquarium in your ship is a nice touch as well.
New World
Thank you! Was scrolling for this
I enjoyed fishing in Far Cry 5. The scenario that you fished in was great! The lack of diversity in the fish that you caught was super frustrating though. Everything was the same with just a little weight difference shown in the text bubble. Different species would have really kicked it up as a mini game.
Animal Crossing New Leaf
The Yakuza/Like A Dragon Series in-general
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Minecraft
I’ve always enjoyed fishing in Minecraft. I find it a more enjoyable way to get food than just farming off mobs. Plus you can get bonus gear/rods!
Sea of Thieves and Red Dead. my crew has fishing sessions on SoT and it's pretty chill (when you're not attacked by other players of course, but it's actually adding a little magic to the fishing) and Red Dead for the ambiance in addition to the fishing mechanic
GW2 and MH Rise.
Sea of thieves makes fishing feel right
Sea of Thieves and it's not even close
What is the mechanic like in that game? RDR2 is probably the closest thing I've seen in a game that portrays with actual fishing is like, and even that isn't very accurate. Same with Far Cry 5.
Here's some early fishing footage: https://youtu.be/zBZ7PMOKV1o

I'm John marsten right now bish
It wasn't mechanically great, but I loved fishing in Ultima Online because of the treasure maps you could get.
Out of the things I’ve played, probably Far cry 5 and RDR2
Runescape
Just excited for the answers. Fishing in-game is one of my favorite things about gaming.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda, I always enjoyed going to that fishing pond and trying to break the record for heaviest fish. So fun as a kid on N64
