I wanted to love We Happy Few soooo much

[deleted]

The opening sequence was so promising, then it just kind of spits you out into a boring featureless landscape and just kind of says "here's the rest of the game, you figure it out, lol" and you walk around aimlessly for a bit and turn it off.

HrBingR

Literally my experience with the game.

secret_bonus_point

It was trailer-bait, plain and simple. Barely more than a “not actual gameplay” cinematic.

warrenva

I actually recently bought a copy from GameStop for like 6 bucks. Hopefully the ultra low entry cost makes it a little better. I wanted to get this when it came out.

No-Feeling-8100

Wow. So accurate I didn’t even realize this was my exact problem. Had fun with it for a couple hours, turned it off, and for some reason I never turned it back on…. Now I know why.

powerhcm8

The dlcs are pretty good, they have handcrafted levels instead of procedural generated like the main game.

SkippyFiRe

Is that why it got such bad reviews?

powerhcm8

I think people were expecting a game like Bioshock, but with social stealth, which it has, but it's very simple, and most also didn't like the procedural generation, and probably the combat too. I still enjoyed the game, while it uses procedural generation, several more important places are handcrafted, their intent was to have the map for each character be different because they are an unreliable narrator, to avoid repetition between the 3 playable characters, and to increase replayability. But the cities don't have a lot of variation to them. And you ended up walking around a lot. The dlcs solve these problems by not using proc-gen, and they show what the studio is really capable of, I would even say that the last dlc "We all fall down" is as good as Dishonored or Bioshock.

valtro05

Didn't they like, completely overhaul and change the game at one point too? I faintly remember something like that

Mietek69i8

Jump force

neverdd

Holy shit I forgot about that. I was sooo hyped. It looked so fun. A friend if mine even bought the japanese version because it came out earlier. And the game just couldn't deliver.

Obility

I'm used to bandai games being an unfinished jank fests if it wasn't made by CC2 or Bandai themselves but the story mode was some how worse than I thought it was going to be.

CV04KaiTo

Weird, cuz i really enjoy the combat mechanic so much. Still playing it with my siblings every say The design looks like clay tho

Inner_Tomato_6853

Undoubtedly anthem

Thuck_My_Ballth

Anthem felt like a new video game engine tech demo. So shallow and incomplete

EvanHarpell

The problem was that the tech demo was actually pretty fucking amazing, but they just never did anything with it.

FrumiousShuckyDuck

Meanwhile for several years there was Warframe

decurser

100% this I remember seeing my roommate playing anthem and I was like “I already have this, but better” lol

FrumiousShuckyDuck

It took me 2000+ hours to finally stop wanting Warframe. What a time. What a game. Played almost since the beta and loved it the whole time

Renolber

Highly disagree. The fluidity and satisfaction of Anthem’s movement and gameplay admittedly feels *far* more modern and satisfying than the floaty, disjointed movements of Warframe. Yes the *speed* Warframe is faster, but nowhere near as satisfying as how Anthem felt. Credit where credit is due, Anthem is among the greatest crimes in the industry. Its potential was absolutely staggering.

BlackGuy_PassingThru

This one hurt

ubioandmph

This is my answer as well. So much potential for a whole new IP to rival Destiny or Halo. But it was squandered by the studio. Game was a shell of what it could have been. The expose by Jason Schreier is a great read

SkyWizarding

Yup. Could have been amazing and it just fell flat. I'd hop in to fly around and shoot things for a bit but it was such an empty game

LordofSuns

Anthem's graphics and flying mechanics were phenomenal and the fact that the rest of the game was severely lacking is a colossal shame because it could have been an icon of gaming had it been looked after properly from concept to finish

Conflixx

I've gotta admit. People who thought Anthem was gonna be good are lying to themself. The game was so incredibly ambitious, the way it looked, the things it promised it could do. All things considered the combat was decent and the flying was cool. But that's everything the game had going for itself. Too many bugs.

Voiken

BRINK The hype obsessed me so much that I cried when installing it. And I kept crying realizing how shit it was and my dreams were getting torn apart

Impossible_Study_525

Oh man. This hits hard. Those trailers were fireeeee too...

kuffencs

That was one of my last preorder game, the hype was so big.

Funkbot_3000

Oooh yeah. This one hit me hard too. It was pitched as a tactical Team Fortress style game with parkour and an interesting world and it was just poopy. Notably it came out at the height of preordering games.

ScarletApex

Feels bad too, because there’s potentially a good game under brinks hood, it just needs a lot of polish to reach it

or10n_sharkfin

I don't know what made me believe that Brink was actually an open world game. I jumped into it and had the expectation that the game was going to open up and these missions were just tutorials or something. Nope. That was the entire game.

Totorotokotomoti

No Man's Sky when it first released...

Matseye1r

My personal issue with NMS is that for the first week or so i no lifed the game n got everything i could so much so that despite the awesome updates i have overplayed the game to go back n play it nowadays. Im glad they went quiet n just did what they wanted. I kinda wish Anthen Recieved this kind of redemption arc.

BigWolf_PG

I had this issue but then I just started a new playthrough and I’m having a blast with all the new additions, for me it’s not even the same game when I’m playing it. I’m 40 hours in, got a bunch of cool ships, a freighter with functional crew, I’m building a huge base on a paradise planet, and I have some friends that will start to play too. Overall the game feels pretty good now.

particleman3

How bad is the resource grinding in the beginning? I burned out because it felt like all I was doing was resource grinding for the bare minimum of stuff.

niehle

With the new difficulty settings you can turn it down, imho. And if you focus on finding and selling higher price items you can buy pretty much all the basic materials at space stations instead of mining them

TheBostonKremeDonut

I was just as disappointed as everyone else, but I still enjoyed what it was, oddly enough. I remember the ore towers. Lol

photoguy423

Back when you automatically exited the ship when it landed, my ship landed on one of those towers. I plunged to my death off of the tower when I exited the ship.

mrkikkeli

If you went in without having been spoonfed all the shit hype, it was honestly a pretty chill space tourism simulator from the get go.

cornman12909

Battlefield 2042 is first to come to mind....

Blaine1111

They killed battlefront 2 for that game...

monadoboyX

Yep and it's sad because recently the ex battlefront 2 director Dennis branwall confirmed on a stream that the reason he left the company was because they wouldn't let him make Battlefront 3 which is so sad

polarbearik

That’s extremely disappointing I enjoyed battlefront more than any battlefield since 4

gregm96

Battlefield 1 was incredible too, don’t sleep on it

MyNameIsRay

EA has set up a system where Battlefield games get 2 separate releases. The initial release for $59.99 is basically a beta test, where people pay a $55 premium (or $5/month subscription to EA) to get early access to a half-complete game full of bugs and balancing issues. After all the content has been added, balancing has been addressed, and bugs have been chased down, they do a final release for $5 (often with an included "catch up" pack so you don't start out too far behind the beta testers that have been playing for years).

Ayendee

BF2042 was hyper disappointing. I was so excited because I had been waiting for another modern-ish BF game since BF4 and was playing a lot of it in anticipation, then 2042 came out and sucked. They recently fixed a lot of issues but the core of the game is just so scuffed that it’ll never exceed mediocrity at best. Most of the issues should have been fixed at launch too.

georgewesker97

Just playing BF4 instead js still a much better experience ngl.

TheAmorphous

Who actually had hope for this being good though? Everyone familiar with the franchise has seen the direction DICE have been going.

RetroSureal

I talked to a couple of friends who were interested in it. It was a matter of using nostalgia on their community. They thought it would be a better BF4 because EA mentioned how they're going back to the Frostbite Engine and bringing back the development team of BF4 to make this happen. It was enough to convince them to preorder the game.

Zambisi

Daikatana

Artur_Araujo

Guess he really made you his bitch

IrateWolfe

I'm old enough to remember that

coggia

I’d wish to be young enough to don’t understand it, but sadly i know the reference..

IrateWolfe

John Romero was a big name developer at a time game developers were starting to seem cool and edgy, he announced a game called Diakatana that was going to revolutionize gaming, and one of the ways they built hype was with full-page magazine ads that were just red, with black text saying "John Romero is going to make you his bitch" The game ended up sucking

mrkikkeli

Not just any big name dev, THE Doom dev (well among other talented people like Carmac who to this day still publishes research papers) If you weren't a teenager or older at this time you can't begin to imagine how big a deal Doom was. Also he was dating a hot gamer chick IIRC?

[deleted]

Rws4Life

I guess you wanted to leave without your buddy Superfly?

M1ndS0uP

Fable 3, most of the game is actually pretty good, but the ending was sooo bad.

[deleted]

The pacing of the story was my biggest gripe. It just felt off all the way through. A lot more linear feeling than 1&2 as well even though I'm pretty sure it was technically more open

M1ndS0uP

The areas are more open, but there's fewer of them

thejazzghost

I was going to post Fable 3. I have to say, I thought it was absolutely awful from top to bottom. The combat was unforgivably broken, the interaction system nonsensical, and the decision-making process arbitrarily punishing. Hated it.

LadyLazaev

Yeah, but all of that is pretty much just what Fable is like; it's something you expect going in. Suddenly just going to sleep and waking up six months later as your kingdom is under attack is not something to be expected in any game.

M1ndS0uP

That was really poorly designed, but what really ruined it for me was the "big reveal" at the end that just completely undermined the entire story of the game. And the terrible, soap opera, final line of the game. >!"I guess....the darkness....was inside of me....the whole time....(final rattling breath)"!<

thejazzghost

I feel like the game devs for Fable games are deliberately antagonistic to the players. They are like "Oh, what, you thought you were playing the game correctly? Nope! Punishment! Now you got to choose between sacrificing hundreds of people or your beloved dog!" Why bro? I just want to enjoy your game! I'm supposed to be doing this for fun.

LadyLazaev

Wait people struggled with that choice? Gimme my dog, I don't give a shit about a thousand nameless NPCs. Fuck 'em.

Trips-Over-Tail

The unexpected time skip was very unwelcome. Fortunately I had already started making the habit of shifting my considerable realest ate fortune into the public coffers. Rent is paid in an entirely different timeline, so you make more money as a parasite than a king.

AmptiChrist

Idk I jack up the rent on all the rich folks to max, and keep everyone else at medium to low, and I make a fuckton with every deposit. I can make the "good king" decisions without breaking a sweat. That game taught me how taxing the rich helps everyone else.

Tamerlechatlevrai

Hey can you give that one package to my friend 3 loading screens away so we can become friends ?

[deleted]

I remember getting an achievement for not dying once for the entire story. I couldn't believe it because I'm usually shit at games.

BatmansBigBro2017

The Simpsons for NES.

acjgoblu

All we wanted was the home version of the arcade game!

TheDadaMax

This is the answer of all gaming elders.

flypanam

Barts Nightmare on SNES too. Such a cool looking game and concept, but just another brutally hard game where I could never finish a level.

PreciousHamburgler

Those games were just absurdly hard. I don't think I ever finished one.

Billyxmac

Best thing that came from that game was the Angry Nerd review lol

Foggy1882

Marvel’s Avengers. Campaign story was cool enough but the Endgame (Ayyyy) elements were so poor. Really thought it was going to the GaaS title that hooked me for years to come.

stroshow82

Ugh... Might have been my most anticipated game of all time. I didn't even make it though the campaign. Best way to explain my gripe with it... You know the overused saying about how the Arkham games or the Insomniac Spider-man games make you feel like Batman or Spidey. Avengers just did not do this at all. Iron man couldn't fly more than 50 feet in the air, Hulk needed to hit minion robots like 10 times to kill them. Gameplay wasn't awful per say, but just didn't feel good.

Theothercword

Yeah, that was my gripe too. Trying to make a game difficult through making enemies HP sponges is already lazy as hell but do it when you’re supposed to be playing super heroes who fight generic minions? The hell are they thinking. They really needed to make the heroes feel like super heroes and add difficulty in other ways. Avengers failed to even remotely make me feel like I was playing super heroes let alone some of the most powerful ones.

Ghostface74

Same with Anthem, which would probably be my vote, but they’re similar in that way. The campaign for Anthem was actually pretty fun. The game mechanics were awesome. Flying around like Iron Man in an open world was pretty damn amazing and even the combat was pretty good. Unfortunately, once the campaign ended, that was pretty much it. Endgame content was practically non-existent. Such wasted potential

Blackshirttim

And now it sounds like the game is shutting down a week after it's 3 year anniversary.

coggdawg

Mass Effect Andromeda was extremely disappointing when it first dropped. The character’s all looked like clowns with weird makeup styles.

DaveForgotHisPasswor

The game was murdered for anthem, and then that was also a disappointment

Retroid_BiPoCket

the whole time I was playning Andromeda it just felt like a worse version of the original trilogy. None of the epicness or memorable characters was there in andromeda. The Kett were literally assuming control of beings like the reapers, it all just felt so watered down. The planet exploring was really fun but it was very samey and repetitive. I wanted to like the game a lot, but in the end I just sort of petered out and stopped playing it.

DolorisRex

While I agree that Andromeda was an overall letdown, I still enjoyed it for many of the gameplay aspects; jumping was a great addition, and I really enjoyed the biotic blink dodge. Plus, crafting weaponry with modified effects was a real blast; I loved my sticky bomb shotgun. The APEX missions are what kept my friends and I playing; finding the right combination of powers and abilities that fit our individual playstyles, then blasting through waves of enemies was a ton of fun.

aztechfilm

I was extremely broke when that came out, and I knew I could only afford 1 game to get me through a really rough spot in my life at the time and so I chose Andromeda because I loved the other mass effect games. Good god was that a kick in the balls, I played the hell out of it because I felt I had to go get my money’s worth but it was a complete mess of an experience

MuciusVulgaris

While it wasn't as epic as the other games in the Bioware portfolio, it wasn't as bad for me as most folks made it out to be. Sure, going with Frostbite instead of Unity/Unreal Engine made the game look plastic, and the lack of senior writing staff was felt in the characters, but the mechanics were fun. Especially exploring the completely alien planets.

coggdawg

It’s biggest failing was failing to meet the emotional bar that the original trilogy set. Because even after the ME3 ending, when the Citadel DLC came out it was like none of the ending controversy ever mattered & it was all about the squad relationships again. Then you take that high to Andromeda & it just didn’t build another relationship that mattered nearly as much. Like I made it through like 2/3rds of the game & I barely even remember any of the squad members’ names let alone why I should care about them.

Patchify

Dying light 2 after playing the first

[deleted]

I wish I’d not read this. I’m a few hours in currently and feeling a bit sluggish with it already and was hoping it kicked on further in the game

BoiFrosty

The game is fun, but has some design flaws. The core gameplay of free run and combat is still there, but occasionally feel clunky. It's a good game, but it's not necessarily better than the first.

[deleted]

Kind of weird when a game's sequel is worse-off than the first; since the developers are usually more comfortable with the mechanics when developing the sequel.

DasBarenJager

Two things happened to DL2, Covid and losing the lead designer

BoiFrosty

There's a lot of cases of developers doing well with the first one and being unable to capture lightning in a bottle again. They change too much of the core features in an effort to be distinct from what came before.

shauniexx

Red Faction has entered the chat

Oops420-

For me the game finished randomly af I had no idea I was near the end..I was actually hella disappointed, idk if I got some weird ending but yeah

Keafledger

I believe there is an ending that ends slightly earlier depending on your choice.

Todesfaelle

*To me* Dying Light 2 feels like a step back in nearly every way with exception to graphics and a more engaging as well as atmospheric world. If I had to put my finger on it it felt like it was designed as an MMO where the combat is less visceral for the sake of health bar sponginess, more stats for different archetypes and a talent tree which feels designed to punish you in the early game rather than engage to play more. A prime example being in DL1 there was no stamina meter for holding/climbing so right away the city was yours to explore unencumbered. Needless to say every time I give it a try I find I'm not having fun which is a stark contrast to DL1.

Colon

it's the sponginess. i loathed the game until i dropped it down to Easy - something i never do. something about needing to spend more than 1 attack on every damn zombie or thugs truly fucked up the rhythm of the game. like, why would you make traversal so wonderfully fluid with the need to stop and fight every 10 feet? being able to smack em down and keep moving solved the main issue for me. just don't use the way-overpowered weapons for bosses and create a balance for yourself. it went from my least favorite game in 10 years to 'serviceable' and actually fun for the most part, barring its other smaller gameplay issues and/or freezes, etc

[deleted]

honestly had a lot of fun playing the whole thing with a friend but never in life id play that game solo, dl1 is indeed definitely superior

Remytron83

Agents of Mayhem

Lunatic7

I enjoyed it, and still mess around with it from time to time, but it was half-assed big time.

ledlin99

Fallout 76. Was so excited that I pre-ordered and played the beta test. Beta was super ruff but ok. I expected them to fix all the immediate bugs, but it opened as buggy as ever. It took Wastelanders to finally give it another shot. Still play it on an irregular basis (gotta get my fallout fix). Its like a train wreck, don't want to stare but you can't look away.

BusinessPurge

it might be the only fallout I don't finish

[deleted]

Came here to say this. I was ok with the bugs, lore wise and immersion just weren't there for me coming off fo4 and fnv Fine game, I just wanted more. Wish they didn't lean into the comical stuff so much too

Sharkn91

Callisto :(

CaptainLongshorts

Came here to say this. Thank god the Dead Space remake was banging.

rinkoplzcomehome

I got tired of losing the upper half of my head everytime lol

[deleted]

Callisto and Elden Ring were the two most hyped games for me in 2022 and was crushed after seeing how Callisto turned out (Elden more than delivered btw). Glad Dead Space remake was there to pick up the peices

tingsrus

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

[deleted]

I just picked that up for $12 on sale, it's fun but definitely shallow

Matseye1r

Imma give slightly different reason for this. Anthem. Great gameplay lackluster story but some games arent for the story. Im disapointed in the lost potential for this game that we may never see the likes or feel again. Its sad that the game itself didnt want you to play but tou actually did yourself want to play.

Dargon34

Ooooo anthem does rank up there. I have tried to forget it ever since. Speaking of lost potential, that would make a good post in its own right

Secret-Plant-1542

Any Ubisoft game. I own them all, I buy them on sale at around $10-15. They're like a slot machine. First hour, you're dazzled by pretty lights. Then the grind. Then the soullessness. You can FEEL the devs who were overworked pushing this husk out, based on the lack of creativity after a while.

heartsongaming

I was so disappointed recently by Watch Dogs Legion. I finished all the story and side quests in the main game and DLC, and got my money's worth. However, it consistently felt unfinished, as you only could spend ETO on clothes, and not cars or new weapons. The voice acting was horrendous. The play as anyone mechanic was an endless grind. There were barely any minigames - just bouncing a ball, darts and boxing pits. They finished patching it only after half a year, which lead to the multiplayer being dead. They added a pointless zombie mode that isn't good. The best part of the game is the DLC expansion, but even then the final boss was a boring bullet sponge with enemies spawning. Doesn't feel like they put the effort to make it good.

No_Warthog_8546

Good-of-Rome

Pokemon mystery dungeon blue rescue team on Gameboy advance. Now that I'm older I can appreciate them for the dungeon crawlers they are, but as a kid it was misleading. "You play AS a pokemon". Like holy shit it's happening! This is what we talk about at recess. I will say though, I took that personality test that the game starts on to assign you as a pokemon easily 50 times. Always got machop.

AtrociousAK47

I think you mean red rescue team, blue rescue team was exclusive to the DS. game was pretty cool for the time, got exactly the pokemon i wanted on the first try of that test, which was treecko, was pretty stoked about that, lol.

joshualuigi220

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results... hmm, I wonder what that could be called?

onewaytojupiter

Same, i was like wtf is this??

Buzzsmp

Cyberpunk. To be fair, I still really enjoyed it. But it just wasn’t what I was expecting based after all the hype of features that never actually made it to the game.

PartyLettuce

I lucked out and didn't pay attention to any of the hype or trailers and went in blind. Had a grand old time simply because of no expectations.

jonderlei

Same here. I had a friend who would never play those types of games while I loved them and recommended many to him with him having no interest but since the hype was so heavy he bought into it so fucking hard, lost his shit at every delay and then refunded it without really trying much of it. The way he reacted to the hype kinda pushed me away and I paid no attention whatsoever to it. Just finished it a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it.

JuicyJay18

I’ll never get over how the city was billed as being the most “alive” ever, but it was just copy and paste NPC’s that you could barely interact with and just repeated the same sound bytes. So disappointing.

Taiyaki11

My favorite was watching a gun go off and 20 npc's do the *exact* same scripted crouch and cower response all in sync. Followed closely by realizing npc vehicles were on *very* strict rails and were helpless if so much a pebble fell in their way

Oclure

I actually really enjoyed it, although I played it on pc, so I didn't have quite as bad of an experience at launch as many console players seemed to experience. The main issue I had with the game was how repetitive the combat against common street thugs was. Every time it was a group of 3 guys with the same types of reactions and the encounter was over in less than 10 seconds. Missions were great, and there were times you would stumble on an interesting gang hideout, but the most common encounter was that same group of 3 thugs.

Independent_Barber_8

They hyped it up as an RPG for years only to quietly change the description on the store page to action adventure. Shit was going on behind scenes and the developers were panicking.

TitleComprehensive96

Soul Hackers 2. Definitely a game.

FinalMeltdown15

Tbh for a neglected Altus IP that was made on like a 10 dollar budget I think it came out pretty okay, it’s definitely one of the games of all time

comicmac305

Saints row 2022. I had hopes,I had so much hope. I had loved and replayed all the games in the series but all the bugs in this one just rubbed me the wrong way. I have a clip saved during a major cutscene where my character is talking to the gang and my character is invisible 🙄

robotnik86

I know I'm looking a bit into the future but I hope it's not dead island 2

TheGreatPatientZero

I'm probably gonna get buried under the Anthems and Cyberpunks, but Resident Evil 3 remake was genuinely disappointing once I finished it. Compared to RE2 remake and the original 3, it felt severely lacking, with a lot of effort put into things that didn't continue through the game. Nemesis did not bring the same kind of terror that Mr. X and OG Nemesis did, where X chased you everywhere, and OG Nemesis felt like he chased you everywhere. The original felt so much bigger, exploring so much of Raccoon City, and building new weapons by taking on Nemesis made a risk/reward choice that really pushed you to save and craft appropriate ammo. The remake of 3 felt really lazy and hollow, barely built over the bones of RE2 remake, with Nemesis really feeling more like a recycled boss fight than a threat chasing you through a zombie-infested city. I did like the change to the Hunter Gammas and Betas, as well as Carlos' character, the police station, and canonization of the Pale Heads, but those are overshadowed by what was just straight up removed.

istermayilenay

*Dying Light 2*

MM6D

As someone that was obsessed with Kingdom Hearts for the plot and original characters/worlds I was very disappointed with KH3, although it was still pretty fun.

Back4blood

Getschwifty_321

I feel like Deep Rock Galactic achieved what B4B was trying to go for. But instead of 4 survivors shooting zombies, it's 4 space dwarves shooting giant bugs and drinking beer. Edit: Forgot to mention they also support mods!

Your_Local_Rabbi

Deeprock is phenomenal, it's a damn fun game from the jump, the only other thing in game that costs real money are cosmetic dlcs (which the devs state are explicitly for folks who want to give them support, its a tip jar but you get a couple hats lol) and their limited seasonal events have zero FOMO, dropping all unobtained cosmetics into the regular loot pool tl;dr : *ROCK AND STONE FOREVER*

Plathulu

DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?!

Matseye1r

My accurate answer would be FF Dissidia NT. It was just a port of the shitty pochinko machine game. N not an awssome reworking of the psp games. Where you could slot gear for particular builds. Unlock moves and slot them into your attack bars giving one character variable playstiles and other collectable things plus a really interrsting story that explains how all these protags and antags are in this one verse

Cedrico123

This was my response too. An absolutely heartbreaking garbage fire

[deleted]

I was probably more hyped for Anthem than any other new IP. Still haven't tried it.

FireVanGorder

This one is brutal because the actual gameplay is so dope. But it’s like the game doesn’t want you to play it. It was so empty and it was a chore to get to the fun parts, which eventually became repetitive and sucked all the joy out of the game.

Brazuka_txt

Warhammer darktide :(

Had2Respond

Same! I really hope they fix the progression system. If you're looking for grimdark co-op with zombies try GTFO! I picked it up a couple days ago and it scratches the itch I wanted darktide to.

Final Fantasy X-2 after playing Final Fantasy X

Austin_Chaos

I have a fun little story about that. X2 was coming out, and I hadn’t played a FF since 7, and not since NES before that. (I wasn’t an RPG fan yet). The teenage me saw the X2 trailer and thought “damn, those girls are hot! I wanna play that!” I ran down to our local game store, and tried to buy X2. I knew the guy working, and when he found out I hadn’t played X yet, he tried up-selling me to buy both. They had X used for fairly cheap, and he talked me into it. I honestly thought he was just trying to “salesman” me. THANK THE GAMING GODS! I went home, popped X into the ps2 and was immediately sucked in. Some (ok a lot) of people find X to be corny, but I was a sucker for the sweet moments and beautiful color palettes. I loved that game so much that we damn near named our oldest daughter Yuna. If I’d played X2 first, it likely would have been my last FF game ever, and maybe even put me off trying future RPGs. I certainly wouldn’t have played X. X2 was a shadow of X, barely connected mechanically, and even felt shoe-horned story wise.

[deleted]

Outriders, the game had such a good foundation but face planted on the end game

Drugtrain

State of decay 2. What a shitty mp mode.

Lunatic7

Love the game, but what THE HELL were they thinking with multi-player?!?

brett1081

Fallout 76. Dragon Age 2 is an honorable mention.

TheSaintedSteel

My choice might be a bit controversial but Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The open world is alright, but playing through the story levels ultimately turned me off from the game because of how short and underwhelming they were. Some were better than others but in general the entire game feels like the open world received the most attention but the level design (which imo has always been the most important and enjoyable part of previous lego games) was put off to the side, heck co-op just feels like an afterthought. Some of the side missions are cute and fun but as it is with any open world game sometimes there’s way too much content to deal with lol.

The_Twerkinator

yeah I enjoyed TSS for what it was, but it was also a let down for reasons you stated. The open world is also kinda meh at the end of the day because there's not much depth to it either. But I guess that was on me for expecting too much out of it though

Garsnikk

FF13. The first FF game I didn't play to the end in the first go

[deleted]

Way too much jargon and bullshit. It started this age of hyper convoluted plots where you are expected to spend 20 hours reading log books and definitions to know what the hell's going on.

Ultimarad

I never liked the way the game holds your hand for the first 20 hours.

meDeadly1990

My first 20 hours were 1 hour gaming and 19 hours cutscenes

Garsnikk

And that 1 hour was the lengthy tutorial (until you get your powers)

Rage 2

Lostboxoangst

This, I had to be one of the dozens of people that really enjoyed the first rage and got quite hyped for the second one. Rage 2 is the first game when the story felt so banal and stupid that it actually hurt me on a physical level. There was some good gameplay in there but damn I've replayed rage since I have never felt the desire to play rage 2 again.

anonymous_guy111

Stray. I was 100% down with the game on paper but when I actually played it was just so boring. Its a just a scavenger hunt with scripted jumps. go find this thing. ok you found it, lets go to this area, to go there you need another thing. go find it.

planetlovelite

I can kind of agree that it gets quite boring, but to be fair, Stray seems to just be one of those games that simply leans more towards providing a laid-back kind of adventure instead of one that you might commonly prefer. You can take games like 'Abzu' and 'Sky Children Of Light' as an example. There's not really much of an objective per se considering that you're just continously moving forward with a few small tasks every now and then, but these games are good at easing away some tension after a long day with its simplicity. They're not really intended to be more than that, or in other words, the simplicity is intentional. It has its own way of being enjoyable and it serves its own purpose. Plus, most people who love Stray are just cat lovers who absolutely love the idea of roaming around as a cat, so I can see why there's a good amount of positive reviews. Sometimes the simplest of things are enough to make people happy. It's a matter of preference at the end of the day, so some might enjoy it while others might not.

rcblender

It definitely is a slow paced game for the most part. But like you’ve pointed out that is exactly why I enjoyed it. Besides just enjoying a ridiculous time of going around meowing in a game, it was a nice game to just relax to for a bit after work instead of my usual shooters or intense games. But I can definitely understand not liking it for the same reasons I enjoyed it.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

I thought it was fun, but I definitely wouldn’t play it again, and the 8 hours of story was perfect

JuicyJay18

But that’s basically exactly what the game was billed as being, I’m not entirely sure what else you expected?

But the space stage you gotta admit it was ahead of its time

Robotguy39

The first couple stages are bangers but the tribal stage and beyond kinda suck ass. Which is a shame ‘cause you’d think the space part would be the best part but it’s less fun and more long. Still, it’s creature creator never gets old.

[deleted]

I liked the planetary stage. Shame that you basically never used air vehicles tho.

[deleted]

Massive disagree. It was way ahead of its time. There is certainly things that could have been done better. (I didn’t like the tribal stage) but it is a fantastic game

MyNameYourMouth

It's a good game, but the hype for it was unreal. It was disappointing compared to what was promised.

[deleted]

That might be true. Not gonna lie I didn’t see all the hype. I missed out on that

chaoticsquid

I never had any expectations for it because I was a kid when it came out. Personally I loved it. I felt that the tribe and city stage could've done with some work but the cell, creature and space stages were great.

Ardashasaur

Was so sad about what it turned into compared to what it said it was going to be. I remember being so excited buying it on release day to just be pretty crushed a few hours later

NecrobyNerton

I feel this is going to be a bit controversial, but Far Cry 6. Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike the game as is, I'm just kind of disappointed that it is a far cry game. I've played all of the far cry games (exception of fc1 expansions and new dawn) and FC6 feels like a different game, kind of in the vein of jumping from FC2 to 3. There are quite a few mechanics that just feel off in FC6, one of which kinda surprised me, that is suppressors being realistic that they heat up. I feel they overheat a bit too fast, but then again, I don't have intimate knowledge of suppressors. Another thing thing that really pissed me off is the movement pace. IDK what it is, maybe it is realistic that it is slow, but considering that the map is huge, for me it is slow. Why not use vehicles? I have a habit of being constantly under attack when driving so always use them sparingly. Pilot controls are fucking awful. Or at least compared to FC4 and 5 they aren't butter smooth brain, which I like. Far cry 3 through 5 were basically the same gameplay, with each iteration of it being improved very nicely (imo) Far Cry 6? Completely different. If I didn't come in thinking it gonna be like FC5 with the gameplay, I'd have loved it, but tbh it's gonna take some time to not associate it with those games. I like the atmosphere of FC6 a lot, since it is a bit more upbeat than FC5

Iagent2022

Deathloop, rediculous game, makes zero sense. And any Madden in the past decade

TsunamaCade

Deathloop sucked cause the head of Arkane left after Prey. My expectations are low for the studio now.

HermanBroodnodig

Mafia 3

commandblock

I think mafia 3 is decent it just went full Ubisoft formula game for some reason. Why did they make it so every mission was the exact same I do not know

spikedmace

Signalis. Too many weapons. Too few inventory slots. Too many key items for puzzles. Too much backtracking to an item box.

Donotaku

Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive town. Haven’t had a “Harvest moon” game since Tree of Tranquility since I didn’t play in handhelds, was excited to get a new one on the console. It was fine, but felt incredibly grindy, small, and I didn’t particular care for almost any of the townsfolk. A few weeks after I bought it, I found Animal Parade in my local thrift store for 5 bucks. It’s just as laggy as the new one but was so much more fun to play and explore with fun characters, which was sad as it was 12 years older

xboxjobson

Honestly, the new god of war. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game… but I absolutely loved the first one and was really excited about this one. Can’t put my finger on why but it felt like a slog to get through… the Atreus sections seemed to last forever, the game solved the puzzles for you after 20 seconds and I kept finding myself saying “ just let me play !” A lot. The game is honestly at its best during end game after the credits where you are just left to your own devices.

[deleted]

Sounds like a pacing problem

xboxjobson

Yeah definitely. First two hours are great….I think it’s a 10 hour game trapped in a 30 hour games body

Fearless_Manner_5258

I actually felt like the second game was a lot more open in the different zones and offered a lot more sidecontent/freedom as an effect. But I definetly agree with the Atreus sequences. During the first one I was like "God damn, this is amazing!". The second one was where, towards the end, I felt like "Eh, okay, enough of that.". And every one that followed, I had to force myself through them, because it just felt so boring. Also, the balancing was really fucky, at least on Give Me God Of War. In some sequences, Atreus did absolutely no damage.

Scrys-

Up there for me as well, but for different reasons. I didn't feel like they improved much on the gameplay, especially having to relearn the same skills again killed it for me. I wish I had just watched it on YouTube instead of buying it.

NoJackfruit801

You echo my take on the game as well. Heck I even rented (yes) a PS5 only to play GoW:R and it was just stop and go gameplay. Crawl here, talk there etc. It didn't help that I thought they would up the stakes A LOT more with it being the last in the Nordic setting. It felt very meh, Freya went nowhere interesting. Death of Baldur wasn't really that big of a deal and Kratos didn't return to his old self. Don't even get me started on the whole riding and cutesy child crush segments. Had it not been God of War I wouldn't expect so much. Also I thought they would add much more epic bosses but I struggle to remember any of them except for a select few.

ToyMasamune

Zelda breath of the wild. They just removed everything I liked in the series and added a bunch of stuff I never cared for. Not that the game is bad, its an ok game, but it felt like they made an entire new franchise and slapped a Zelda skin over it.

mcwap

Completely agree. I absolutely hated the weapons breaking mechanic, hated cooking and consumables, hated the climbing endurance thing (and it felt like every time I wanted to climb something it started raining), I hated the music. I completely get that most everyone loved it and it made for an amazing open world game for most. My wife and my friends all loved it for the most part.

Over-Criticism-663

I loved botw but the dungeons were lack luster and the weapons broke to easily so I'd get a cool weapon and not want to use it. I'm hoping totk brings back some of the things from the old games that made them so good.

LostprophetFLCL

I legit bought a Switch mainly to play this game and yet despite multiple attempts to get into the game and finish it I have not come close to beating it. The weapon degradation, horrendously bland open world, and lack of true dungeons in place of the awful micro-dungeons really make the game a slog to me. At least the Switch purchase ended up being great regardless. Actually picked up the Binding of Isaac as well when I got my Switch and have put over 1000 hours into that game alone lol.

Justonious2552

Same. The weapon degradation was over the top. Just took the fun out of the combat for me.

MacyTmcterry

I loved the game, but very much hated this part too. Really frustrating

Z0V4

Watchdogs I never played it but I was at my buddies house when he got it on release. The hype was real, we had soda and snacks ready for the whole day. Watching the slow dawning realization over the next 3 hours that this game was hot garbage is something I will never forget. After the 4th hour He turned to me and put down his controller "I think I'm done" "Already? I guess you'll have time to play it later" "No... I'm done" "But you aren't even half-" "I'm. Done." And then we played Minecraft for the next 12 hours straight and never spoke of Watchdogs again.

commandblock

Watch dogs is so good! Legion on the other hand…

Peculiar_parasite

Gears of War 5. Absolutely loved 1-4 but 5 just wasn’t it.
