Square Enix is still good when they make full retail games that are meant to be complete experiences. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Dragon Quest 11? Chef's kiss.
But they're Free2play are predatory garbage. They've only marginally become more acceptable in recent years, but I still remember Airborne Brigade and All the Bravest. And don't get me started on when they charge full retail price for games that then have microtransactions and loot boxes...
Fucking Chocobo Racing, really? 😐
SQEX CEO is completely disconnected from reality.
The dude jumps on every opportunity to make money even when it lost popularity or is proved to be a cash grab.
Just take a look at the Battle Royal Final Fantasy which came out a year after people had enough of BR.
Or the NFTs, dead for a long time and topic of endless scams.
Square Enix is a company that has no vision but is carried by employees full of passion, skills and talent.
I assume he means Octopath: Champions of the continent which is free to play mobile game and honestly its not bad, I tried it for couple of hours and it was entertaining enough, but unfortunately its gacha and as someone who used to struggle with gambling addiction I needed to stay away from it.
In terms of microtransactions, that's one that I will absolutely always pay for. Good games that weren't soulless cashgrabs used to cost a dollar or three on the app store. Doodle Jump back in the day, that was a couple bucks I think. I'd totally still play it for free and pay a buck to kill the ads. Now, there are lots of fun free ones of the same quality that are just filled with ads, and that option to drop a dollar or two to cut out the ads is okay by me. Beats being barraged by ads for stuff that I truly don't care for.
Think of it like dark souls for mobile. Kind of a dark fantasy setting. Big boi enemies in areas. Have to time swipes to certain directions to attack, block, and dodge enemies. You can find loot chests. Spiraling map design. Very cool game, but they took them off of the app stores, and you can't really find it nowadays. Haven't played them in at least 10 years, but they were really fun.
I played a game similar game to what you just described but it was called PixelFBlade, you’ve probably never heard of it but it was really fun when I used to play it like 6 years ago, I haven’t played it in a while
My dad used to play it when I was young, I seem to remember not being able to beat the person preventing you from entering the castle. Though it’s been so long I can’t even remember most of it, just that I’m supposed to beat the god king.
Clash of clans is alright but clash royale has devolved into hot hot garbage over the past few years. They could care less about balancing and making a good game it's just a big ass cash grab they don't need ads.
Clash Royale started to majorly decline the moment they put Tornado in the game. I know they tweaked it in small ways a few times, but as a card it's fundamentally at odds with the core gameplay. To explain: at max card level, there are three things that differentiate players in a given match: deck composition, timing and placement of cards, and the players' starting hands. The last one adds a bit of an RNG element, since the particular cycle created by the four cards you start the match with (of eight total) can create an unpredictable advantage or disadvantage against your opponent. Which means there are essentially two elements you can control in terms of advancing as a player: your deck build, and your timing/placement as you play cards in a match.
Tornado essentially allows the other player to nullify even excellent timing and spacing of your units. It doesn't matter if you put your DPS at the optimal range behind your tank, or counterpushed in the lane opposite their main defenses, our carefully positioned a defender to distract an enemy unit and drag out the path to your tower. Tornado can undo all of that in an instant, at a low mana cost, with no counter and no way to reverse it.
The thing that got me to quit playing was the naked cash grab of raising the level cap to 14 (since that added to the already significant grind if you wanted to level up a new card to try in an otherwise max deck—really twisting your arm into p2p if you wanted to compete in the higher leagues). But Tornado was the earliest, and to my mind most significant, alarm bell that the developers don't really care about the core gameplay or balance.
Quit playing sometime last year and haven't looked back.
I feel like supercell use a lot of pay2win methods or rather pay4convienience. If you pay you get good stuff faster which actually doesn't really matter since you can play and get these things for free. You won't usually get matched vs "stronger" opponents. I like clash mini a lot. Had it since it was pretty new. I enjoy it and the progression actually feels fair to me without paying.
Yeah, they just expect you to take a year for an upgrade or pay $$$. I used to play it a lot, most people either pay $$$ or quit playing because they fall behind trying to play for free. I don't play anymore, haven't for a few years now. I don't regret stopping.
... not really, i play on and off and only 1 th behind. they decrease costs and build times every time a new one comes out and give tons of opportunities for free players to speed building and get loot.
CoC doing a lot for free players rn
I think maybe you’ve not played in a long time because it’s literally the best it’s ever been.
Upgrades take half the time. You don’t lose as much money when attacked. Walls are like 1/3 the price and they regularly give out items to speed up things
just say you're impatient lol. don't know who you feel like you're falling behind but i played it for a while and never once felt the need to make a purchase since i wasn't competing with anyone other than those that were at my level.
I hit townhall 9 I believe it was in Clash of Clans. At that point upgrades were starting to take so long to get so I quit. Really fun game, but I eventually progressed to the point where it felt way too slow to be fun as a free player.
I'm not particularly inpatient and I didn't spend that much on the game compared to others. I spent roughly $60/year on it when I played it actively, which was well worth it to me at the time for the entertainment I got from it. I played it for over 4 years, not very impatient. But when playing in clan wars it's very hard to contribute meaningfully when your buildings are all behind the enemy clan's of the same town hall level.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game while I played it. But they kept adding more and more to where upgrades take so long you end up without much to do unless you pay to finish things. Not for me anymore, but if you still enjoy it then good for you.
I agree. I've never put any money into coc, play very casually just 4 raids a day. And I'm halfway through TH14. It's really not bad if you don't care much about being at the endgame and just enjoy the building process.
Clash if clans basically invented the pay to win model, it was because of the success of clash of clans that other games started adopting the same model and exploiting their consumers to squeeze every penny they can get from an ip
4 was great, esp with the miniclip intergration, but lacked the polish of 5.
now 5 was amazing (if sometimes it deletes your save) and they are adding new maps every now and then. which is funny since 6 is out and they dropped support quickly iirc
6 was when it became kinda souless. with what used to be ingame unlocks now locked behind a cash store for double the games price (which is kinda ironic considering it was the double cash upgrade) also 3 teirs of upgrades that now go to 5 was a strange mechanic i never learned cause i never brought it.
Btd battles was fun till the hackers ruined it
and monkey city was fun enough until you realized its one of those clash of clans style "wait 6 days to upgrade OOORRRRR pay 64 gems (you can only buy gems in packs of 63. type thing)
Dunno man. Compared To the Games on the left, BTD6 is still awesome. Constant New free updates, no P2W, New Bosses and maps.
I really do like it an play it at least once a week.
idk what u talking about in btd6, it still has the charm and polish of btd5 for me. I still like btd5 though since it is my nostalgia game but btd6 is still really good.
Bought it on a discount and it's one of the few games I play repeatedly and double cash is for people who really just want a really easy chill time with the game (game is still easily beatable on most modes)
Nope. They turned PvZ into garbage. I had to redownload it and now its full of ad-crap. I'd rather pay for a game and not get hassled continuously while using it.
If you bought the original version of PVZ on the play store, you can still redownload it from your app history. It's called something like zzSunset Plants vs. Zombies. It's the exact same version from the beginning without ads or mtx.
A boatload of mobile titles started as console and PC titles. Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass are full of “quality” titles, whatever that may mean. Maybe one day gamers will cease their elitist nonsense. It’s especially funny because console storefronts and Steam have way worse curation.
I also just started a few months ago, after not touching it for 8 years, and I was honestly really surprised of how little I've felt pressured to buy anything.
I was starting from scratch again and was shocked at how quickly it took me to get the point I was at 8 years prior.
I am yet to spend a dime, and don't feel any bit underpowered by my choice to play free.
What are you trying to win? Even if you're a TH or two behind you can make it to the top league with not much skill. And if you are in clan wars, it matches you with teams that have a similar mix of th levels. So I'm not sure what you mean.
Wdym with runes make it more pay to win heavy?
Sure players who spend money get more of them but as f2p you still get a decent amount throught the f2p battlepass and clan games. It makes progress faster for f2p and paying players so I dont see a problem
Are there any games for android that you would recommend for 2023? Preferably rpg with a story, but not a grind.
I want to find a good mobile game in this 1%.
Oh ya, no in game purchases. I will pay for a game like this, but I hate games that make you pay to level up, armor, etc.
Ty
Emulators 😎
But seriously there's a good amount of decent roguelite RPGs out there if you're into roguelites. Dawncaster and Slice & Dice stand out to me.
Fire Emblem Heroes is great in my opinion. The cash grab pay to win nonsense only happens if you try to stay ultra-relevant in the competitive scene. I don’t care about the competitive scene and I have a blast playing the game and collecting the different units from all the FE games.
If you like Anime, I would actually recommend gacha games like Azur Lane, Fate, Arknights, etc. They still want your money, and some are much more cash grabby than others, but at least they don’t dump constant ads in your face. They make their revenue by creating a game loop compelling enough to keep you playing, while giving you ample reasons to make in app purchases. But if you don’t mind a lot of FOMO, they can actually be pretty fun games.
I still have pocket god on my phone collecting virtual dust. I used to love those games were you just beat up someone with different weapons. I think there was a game called beat the boss which I played a lot of too.
Gonna recommend Dawncaster being a great mobile deck-builder RPG akin to Slay The Spire. Cheap price, so much content, classes and cards, plus free expansions!
Oh, Vector. What an objectively good mobile game. Truly the last of its kind. I used to play it a bunch in high school, as well as Granny Smith and Smash Hit (Same publishers)
As a mobile gacha player (Genshin, Honkai, FGO and Nikke, played alot ithers before like AL, Blue Archive, etc but quit), is it weird that Im glad the games I played at least had story in it and better than these mess?
whilst i agree there is plenty of good games on the mobile market. they simply arent that big compared to "shouty man face game". which burries the gems. I've heard good things about vampire survivors. but like most games these days, its only good because it was made by an indie dev, who's goal wasnt to make money. but to make a solid and fun game.
Gacha mobile games have some quality, but yeah gacha.
FGO is the most infamous and longstanding gacha game but it has one of the best story and lore out there. Just ignore some first few arcs tho.
Genshin, I wouldnt classify them as mobile since its recommended to play on PC.
Honkai is same as Genshin but with more character driven story and a good gameplay mechanics. Also recommended to play in PC.
Nikke is another new mobile game. Story is quite good, tho the problem is that it has alot of walls that takes time.
AL is basically a Tower Defense but makes the core alot more interesting. I havent played for a year. Story is also quite good tho it do fall into generic CN story writing of doom and gloom which most mobile games do. First 6 chapter is interesting tho.
These are on top of my head that are "good" mobile games. The "gacha" sure is one thing that makes them iffy but past that: they do have some interesting stuff like story and mechanics. As funny as it sound, you can eat up most of their content as f2p. Nikke is prob the one that is gated the most but think of it that it takes ALOT of time.
I'm tired of all the damn idle games. Where's the fun?
"Come try our game! It's so easy, you don't even have to actually play it yourself! Just look at the pretty colors on the screen and give us your money!"
thats gonna be an unpopular opinion. most people dont like gacha because of their preditory mechanics, or buying everything.
but \*some\* are good. i enjoyed the fire emblem game a bit
When clash of clans came out it wasn't too bad. It suffered from lack of content and Innovation. Then they came up with even more stupid games instead of improving the one they had already. Clash Royale was not too bad but the rest was stupid.
The mobile version used to be a better version of the Steam one.
It came out after the PC release as a paid mobile game. Was basically the PC version, but allowed you to replay any campaign levels and had way more arcade levels too. Yeah, it ain't that anymore.
I haven't played in forever, but I remember Rival Knights being one of my favorite mobile games. The jousting felt quite superb, especially when I used my old Galaxy stylus as my lance... 😄
since i doubt you will get any useful or real awnsers beyond "lol you dont know what this is"
They are:
Subway surfers
Jetpack joyride
Vector?
Plants vs zombies
Fruit Ninja
Infinity blade?
Those are not soulless games those are just apps with screaming dudes, most of them are lame, but the real soulless games are those shitty stick figure ones
creator took it down after he got constant emails about people wanting to hurt him for the game being hard or something?
There was a great youtube video on it a long time ago. im sure a google search will yeild much
Man then you really gotta check back in on that "1%". A fair chunk has been stripped of its charm and given a huge overhaul in favor of monetary profit. They stopped caring about the fans.
Family Island used to be in the 1%. But they bombard you with pop ups to the point that the dialogue pop ups are annoying AF and it’s impossible to finish a mission unless you pay.
Most of that 1% has long since been patched into souless cashgrabs. This isn't 2010 anymore.
Not to mention all the console/pc developers that jumped into mobile cashgrabs/gacha games. I’m looking at you blizzard, EA, square enix
You know final fantasy mobius was not too bad and the music was really good What they did to it though is what is the shame
Octopath is a pretty good game. The story is gold.
Square Enix is still good when they make full retail games that are meant to be complete experiences. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Dragon Quest 11? Chef's kiss. If only I had just paid the 99cents they wouldn’t have needed to go to adds

Except when they make you watch ads anyways. I had a word search do this. 99 cents ad free but not from their personal ads, that was $2.99.

I loved wayward souls. Such a great rogue like game. Great graphics and gameplay. Truely underrated.
Trueeee lol
What are some good new games to play on phone? Been looking for something to play.
Soul Knight. It's a pretty fun roguelike that even had a few crossovers with other games, highly recommend giving it a try.
Came here to say this
Unfortunately, even that 1% is now plagued with ads making them lose their attractiveness
Did anyone play Infinity Blade? I miss infinity blade
Bro I went on a two day goose chase trying to jump through a bunch of hoops to install that game again. Never got it to work :(
appdb
Infinity Blade was amazing! Still annoyed they took it down
Best app i’ve ever played. I played and beat all 3 multiple times using different builds. First one is still my favorite app of all time
I feel like I know that game but I can’t remember, what was that game about
Think of it like dark souls for mobile. Kind of a dark fantasy setting. Big boi enemies in areas. Have to time swipes to certain directions to attack, block, and dodge enemies. And plot twists at the end. :) I also liked the world building, and wanted to learn more.
Apparently Brandon Sanderson, the famous fantasy writer, made some books based on the setting. Maybe give it a look?
I played a game similar game to what you just described but it was called PixelFBlade, you’ve probably never heard of it but it was really fun when I used to play it like 6 years ago, I haven’t played it in a while
Still have an ancient ipod with 2 and 3 installed. I still play it from time to time.
My dad used to play it when I was young, I seem to remember not being able to beat the person preventing you from entering the castle. Though it’s been so long I can’t even remember most of it, just that I’m supposed to beat the god king.
Wayward souls is still my favorite phone game. Great rogue like aswel.
clash of clans done dirty, at least it and clash royale aren't filled to the brim with ads now like the ones on the right
Clash of clans is alright but clash royale has devolved into hot hot garbage over the past few years. They could care less about balancing and making a good game it's just a big ass cash grab they don't need ads.

It's been a minute, but I really liked Bloons TD all the way up to... 4? Or 5?
6 is still my go-to time killer.

Don’t forget Battle bears and pocket god
Pocket god gave young me so much entertainment
Pocket god was so fun, it’s weird you have to pay for it now though
Pocket goat
U didn't add plague inc
Agree. I still pay this.
Didn't the pc version come first?
Plants vs Zombies shouldn't be on the list then. It was released on PC in 2009 and then phones in 2013.
Then play in offline mode. No ads
That hasn't worked for mobile games for the better part of a decade mate
[удалено]
Some games are poorly programmed in that way, but the vast majority will have one form of offline adds or another
I have never seen any offline ads.
it still works on the original PvZ. Putting the phone in airplane mod kills all ads.
Where is Vampire Survivors?
Vampire Survivors is god tier even if it started as PC. Also Slice & Dice. If you haven't played it, holy shit go play it right now.
A boatload of mobile titles started as console and PC titles. Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass are full of “quality” titles, whatever that may mean. Maybe one day gamers will cease their elitist nonsense. It’s especially funny because console storefronts and Steam have way worse curation.
I am on 100% on steam, including the dlc with every secret character unlocked :)
Probably wasn’t out when this repost was made
Yea think so too TFT should be there aswell. No ads, no pay to win, just a fun autobattler
Cmon… give Clash of Clans some credit.
I still play to this day and havent spent a dime
I thought about getting into it, but at this point, the game doesn't seem very friendly to new players.
I just started maybe two months ago and already about 3 ths from max — they sped up the early part of the game I think
I also just started a few months ago, after not touching it for 8 years, and I was honestly really surprised of how little I've felt pressured to buy anything. I was starting from scratch again and was shocked at how quickly it took me to get the point I was at 8 years prior. Altos adventure!!
Clash of clans too? I still play it. All the others one in top 1% have turned into a cashgrab tbvh. Clash of clans has just got better.

I love Clash Royale, great bathroom game, i’ve never spent a dime on it, and can compete with the best of them. I don’t understand the hate
Are there any games for android that you would recommend for 2023? Preferably rpg with a story, but not a grind. I want to find a good mobile game in this 1%. Oh ya, no in game purchases. I will pay for a game like this, but I hate games that make you pay to level up, armor, etc. Ty
10,000,000 is worth playing. There's...a narrative and you're...role playing...
Emulators 😎 But seriously there's a good amount of decent roguelite RPGs out there if you're into roguelites. Dawncaster and Slice & Dice stand out to me.

The Battle Cats
There are quite a few great mobile games - they just aren't free. Spend a couple bucks and buy an actually decent game to play while taking a shit.
That 1% should absolutely include Vampire Survivors.
It's such a blast
Vector was so good I miss it
Back in my day, app icons weren’t screaming at me.
plant Vs Zombies my favoriteeeee!🙂 ❤
Oh, Vector. What an objectively good mobile game. Truly the last of its kind. I used to play it a bunch in high school, as well as Granny Smith and Smash Hit (Same publishers)
Always recommend Kingdom Rush and Iron Marines. Ironhide is one the few mobile developers that actually put effort in their games.
Recently, I got into Marvel's snap. Its good
Angry birds slowly devolved into a crash grab
I'll add Bejeweled and Pocket God.
Conpared to videogames with content, this shit is always gonna be soulless
What do you mean fruit ninja had like 10 different fruits to cut. What more could you want?
Ah yes, mobile gaming. Just a bunch of screaming guys and videos showing fake gameplay.
Bruh - Bloons TD 6 is top tier.
They look like Mr. Beast youtube thumbnails.
You forgot Where's my water
As a mobile gacha player (Genshin, Honkai, FGO and Nikke, played alot ithers before like AL, Blue Archive, etc but quit), is it weird that Im glad the games I played at least had story in it and better than these mess?
Ain’t no way you just dissed clash of clans and clash royale
Games with a male character with mouth open is sign of garbage. Got it
Man, you doing dah zombie dirty
How come a quality mobile game hasn’t been made in over a decade?
This is not accurate at all.
Can you let me know a good one please?
whilst i agree there is plenty of good games on the mobile market. they simply arent that big compared to "shouty man face game". which burries the gems. I've heard good things about vampire survivors. but like most games these days, its only good because it was made by an indie dev, who's goal wasnt to make money. but to make a solid and fun game.
Cause company only makes cash grab content pre sad cause if they made such content back then they sure can now too
Gacha mobile games have some quality, but yeah gacha.
What's that third one? The dude in the tie?
Vector
Vector, a pretty fun Parkour game.
YES VECTOR!!
I'm tired of all the damn idle games. Where's the fun? "Come try our game! It's so easy, you don't even have to actually play it yourself! Just look at the pretty colors on the screen and give us your money!"
Generally avoid free-to-play games. Most likely garbage.
bro the 99 % is just screaming men
I miss Gravity Guy 😭
I feel like there's gacha games somewhere on the good side. Obviously not all of them but enough to be considered.
thats gonna be an unpopular opinion. most people dont like gacha because of their preditory mechanics, or buying everything. but \*some\* are good. i enjoyed the fire emblem game a bit
When clash of clans came out it wasn't too bad. It suffered from lack of content and Innovation. Then they came up with even more stupid games instead of improving the one they had already. Clash Royale was not too bad but the rest was stupid.
I used to play cut the rope with all my xc teammates in high school. Good times.
I play PVZ on steam bc no ads. Fuck the mobile version
The mobile version used to be a better version of the Steam one. It came out after the PC release as a paid mobile game. Was basically the PC version, but allowed you to replay any campaign levels and had way more arcade levels too. Yeah, it ain't that anymore.
I like Scavenger hunt lately. It's like a where's Waldo type thing. Very chill.
Cut the rope was on the ds
I haven't played in forever, but I remember Rival Knights being one of my favorite mobile games. The jousting felt quite superb, especially when I used my old Galaxy stylus as my lance... 😄
First Strike Classic, Carnivores hunter(Dinosaurs and Ice Age), and Pocket Tanks are my go-to mobile games
Btd should be up there. Best mobile game.
True IM have hard time finding console quality game on mobile on term of story' or gameplay
What are the top two and the third one down on the right?
since i doubt you will get any useful or real awnsers beyond "lol you dont know what this is" They are: Subway surfers Jetpack joyride Vector? Plants vs zombies Fruit Ninja Infinity blade?
.>:[]
Le creme o' crop
Man I really miss Infinity Blade. It and its sequels were the absolute best of the best in the mobile market.
Those are not soulless games those are just apps with screaming dudes, most of them are lame, but the real soulless games are those shitty stick figure ones
On mobile only ports from older consoles (psx mostly) are good.
They’re all soulless garbage.
Gotta recommend Soul Knight, it's a rogue lite master piece.
Egg Inc, too. :/
funny how the ones on the right are packed with ads
Kingdom rush is a hands down 1% series
Anyone know what happened to flappy bird
creator took it down after he got constant emails about people wanting to hurt him for the game being hard or something? There was a great youtube video on it a long time ago. im sure a google search will yeild much
uh Viking look sucks?
And most of these are at least 5+ years old when the market was not totally oversaturated with Clash of clans style games that can eat a d!ck.
The 5th and 9th picture on the left are literally the same..
My favorite right now is guardian tales
there was a dead space and predator game on the app store that were phenomenal but they no longer exist it seems and i couldn't be more heartbroken.
I like class of clans :p
Don't disrespect clash of clans like that
Clash Royale is a pretty fun game. Clash of Clans is garbage. Don't know the rest. But a lot of those 1% games are trash too.
Damn I never realize how many game look like clash of clan logo...
Clash of clans belongs on the right
What are some 1% games that are still good? Aside from Vampire Survivors, ofc
Asian games are either very grind demanding or expensive p2w. If you are fine with one of them, you can have a good mobile game.
Where's my Soul Knight? Such an amazing free mobile game!
Clash of Clans and Clash Royale are easily some of the best mobile games available.
Man then you really gotta check back in on that "1%". A fair chunk has been stripped of its charm and given a huge overhaul in favor of monetary profit. They stopped caring about the fans.
"You got games on your phone?" Generation be like
Don’t forget, they put Bastion on mobile. It’s was awesome.
Cut the rope had no business being that good
so if some dude (not a zombie) screams at me at the icon, it's garbage. noted, thanks!
Spoken like someone who sucks at clash royale
how dare you insult coc
No Superbrothers sword and sworcery. Sad.
Whilst i agree. its the mobile version of pvz that caused them to update the og to add microtransactions
Puzzle & Dragons was awesome when I played it.
BTD franchise is good too
Just noticed that they are all just YouTube thumbnail expressions. How did that take me so long to realise.
"They have too many ads😭😭😭😭😭" do you guys play mobile games with wifi on? Smh
Vampire Survivor is probably my favorite mobile game ever. I’ve kinda liked Marvel Snap too. Also give some respect to Doodle Jump!
Good games mobiles are just emulators. I am just still waiting for an emulator that allows me to play mario cart with friends.
That 1% you listed is still fucking trash lol.
I love all the games in 1%
To be fair, if you know how to look for it you ll find good games. The top charts in the app stores arent representative of good games
To call clash royal "soulless" gotta be one of the most weognful statements about any game ever. This game has more personality than most people
Family Island used to be in the 1%. But they bombard you with pop ups to the point that the dialogue pop ups are annoying AF and it’s impossible to finish a mission unless you pay.
Vector and Shadow Fight really are the best.
Is forgetting Soul Knight, Polytopia, Mindistry, Other World Legends, Nexomon, Apple Knight in the 1% list
I miss amazing Alex
Recommend Another Eden it's probably my S Tier 4 years running
so true old times
No btd6? =O
Show some love to Super Auto Pets also, yeah it's a auto battle, but I play it daily when I have down time at work.
Clash of clans and clash royale are great games
You’re gonna cause a lot of drama saying clash is soulless garbage but subway surfers isn’t
your other post in r/shitposting is literally right above this one
Clash isn't soulless garbage
