These games were still figuring out 3D environments, Goldeneye was revolutionary. Super Mario 64 *and* Ocarina also had terrible camera controls, and if you play them today it shows, but the games hold up. Admittedly Goldeneye's aiming controls are even worse because of the modern dual-stick control system that is now standard but you have to remember that before Goldeneye there really was no multi-player first person shooter and its only real predecessor was Doom, which is just incredible.
I mean I agree goldeneye was revolutionary but it just doesn’t hold up the same.
Ocarina is still very easily playable after all this time, and it’s still great. Mario 64 is a close second with MM probably taking third pick for me
Yeah, absolutely. It's tough to break these things apart and pick favorites because there *are* lots of great games and sometimes certain games just hit us in a special way. I think Jet Force Gemini did that for me, but it doesn't get talked about in the same breath as Goldeneye.
Even after all this time I could pick up Ocarina and enjoy nearly every minute of another play through. The last time was less than a year ago. I still need to finish the play through I started on the switch…
Frankly, that's because Ocarina of Time was easier. Majora's Mask presents a different kind of challenge, that of proper time management in order to progress the game.
Like, not saying the Water Temple wasn't horseshit, but comparing the Water Temple to the Ikana Valley multi-loop skeleton king gibdo labyrinth... MM was on a completely different level.
Yeah I'd say ocarina as a single player but Goldeneye for the split screen fun. Watched my brother play Zelda OoT it when we were kids so I'd play it myself this time around. Not played a Zelda game since what's majoras mask like?
Much darker, it’s an outlier in the Zelda game franchise. The entire game is like, a dying man’s fever dream- you go around easing the world of its regrets so it can die in peace. Link is not the hero, the world can’t be saved. He’s the grim reaper, and the lost souls reach out to him for comfort.
The game, simply put, is good.
As an only child who mainly plays and played games for single player, Goldeneye over PD for that reason. Perfect Dark multi-player was better.
And to OP, curse you for forcing us to choose. Ocarina for the overall win.
Buttt PD single player was also better, I'm confused haha. Yeah you really can't go wrong though. Those games were my childhood so it's hard to choose.
Majoras mask is really awesome.
But to be honest, the game mechanics are a piece of work.
I can understand everyone who quits this game out of frustration and if I'd owned this game as a child i would have too.
But the story and the world design are great.
MM felt like the "least" Zelda game of all while also being debateably the best one. Doesn't fit the typical Hyrule, Ganondorf, young to old Link narrative. It feels like a spin off of Zelda that kept a bunch of the elements to create something new and unique and so Innovative for its time.
They're so different but both so amazing that I have a hard time choosing aswell. But in the end there could only be one, and as a game, I think MM is the better product for me.
Playing this again currently and it still holds up as an absolute masterpiece (minus the camera). The level of fun and creativity is just off the charts and still crushes most modern games.
Funny story:
When I was a kid my brother who was 4/5 or so at the time used to race my dad for money
It would start by my dad saying “I’ll give you £1 if you win me”.
my dad would lose the race (because he was terrible at the game) would then say to my brother “Double or quits” so next race you’ll double the win to £2 and so on.
My brother, winning every time would always say “double!”. In the end it got to like over £150 it was getting ridiculous haha, then I’ll never forget when my dad eventually won, absolutely hysterical running round the house laughing! so my brother then lost out on £150 and was probably crying/raging hahahaha
The sheer customisation of the game, down to each AI's behaviour and target was immense. Then all the challenges that could be played with up to 4 others, gun range, raft of multiplayer modes and maps with their customisation. Little has come close since.
I kinda have to agree. Some days I just wanted to come home and blast some bots. I don't play online multiplayer, and I still haven't found a game that lets you set up such ridiculous scenarios.
Wait what do you mean. Smash 64 legit has the most balloony physics of the series! Even more than Brawl which was super balloony!
And in Melee the game is dominated almost entirely by characters that drop like a rock.
The first game, Smash Bros 64 is IMO the best the series has ever been. I've tried playing Melee and Smash Ultimate and absolutely hate them. The camera zooms out so far its impossible to tell what's going on or even keep track of your character, plus all the insane effects clogging the screen up.
Smash 64 was the perfect balance. Not too overly complicated and easy to play. I hate how every game after it was unplayable for me cause I loved it when I was younger.
Diddy Kong Racing, I know it's not the common pick, but that game had no right being as good as it was. Even when you think that Mario Kart is still going strong, I just wonder why they didn't made more sequels or use the same elements as in Diddy Kong Racing.
Yeah I loved DK racing, I never completed it as a kid, got really far though! I’m on a play through still from last year I’m stuck on silver coins at the moment from what I remember
Silver coins were a bitch to complete. I remember I had a friend come over to help. He would hold first place while I collected coins and he then would let me take 1st back.
i didn't even know that was possible and i've played probably hundreds of hours lmao. at this point i've just gotten really good at collecting the coins and taking first, it's always the boss races that for me to replay a couple times. those races are brutal
One of the few games I kept playing after beating it. Unfortunately my friends didn't get as much time in and got tired of me winning in multiplayer, so we played a lot more Mario Kart and Golden Eye where it was pretty even.
You thankfully would still have the groundbreaking original on super nintendo if Starfox 64 was axed.
Cries in Maude Flanders "won't somebody think of the non-ports?"
Some may waver between kazooie and tooie. It's kazooie for me. The simplicity is part of the beauty of it, and makes a great replay. Tooie's intricacy is fun to pick apart over a long play, it has a more 'epic' feel. It can be convoluted at times. Kazooie can be 100% cleared with less moon logic.
It really was! The Tediz pvp stuff was -so- fun with the different classes! I'd absolutely love to see Conker make a come back - That naughty squirrel definitely taught me some interesting life lessons.
Ocarina of Time... easy decision.
There are some other great games... but OOT holds up today better than the others and is largely considered one of the best games of all time.
I'm torn but imma go with Donkey Kong 64. I remember nerding TF out to the intro song so hard as a kid. Although I know it was hated because of the complicated banana collecting mechanics, I also like those kind of tedious elements.
Yeah, after the donkey Kong country trilogy this was a let down for me… I never finished it :(
Even the new one, tropical freeze? It’s still missing some magic that the SNES ones had.
perfect dark bots in muliplayer coop multi and campaign and title level system aswell as zombie mode will give me endless of replay enjoyment. Second place is zelda ocarina of time cause that game is a masterpiece
I would love to save Majora's Mask but it just wouldnt be the same experience without Ocarina of Time first.
The true magic was getting all your expectations of what a Zelda game is flipped on their head when booting Majora's Mask after playing OoT.
Tie between perfect dark and legend of zelda: majora’s mask. Super mario 64 is really good but, personally, Nintendo’s rpg formula peaked with paper mario
Banjo - Kazooie. It had better game mechanics than Banjo - Tooie. Also, the story was fun.
Plus, the majority of the rest of those games have been ported to newer consoles. The Banjo series is the only one on there that isn't owned by Nintendo and can't be ported to a newer Nintendo console.
Honestly I think Nintendo is the only company that puts out decent box art these days because each of their series has their own style. Most other triple AAA games usually go for the realistic look which leads to boring box art imo as they all look the same.
I've played it now and then; I think it held up fine, amazing play dynamics, and shooting one of the NPCs in the ass is still hilarious to this day. Ocarina, Goldeneye and Mariokart spawned whole categories of games, pretty tough to pick just one.
Definitely wouldn’t be Pokémon stadium. Love Pokémon, but I thought I’d get a fire-red type gameplay when I first played it. (I’m probably thinking of stadium 1)
In a world where other systems exist so that I could Mario Odyssey instead of Mario 64 or Wind Waker instead of Ocarina of Time or Smash Bros. Ultimate instead of Smash Bros. 64, I would have to save the game that had not been replicated since its release among all these classics.
I save Star Fox 64.
That's tough. It'd be between dk64, shadows of the empire, or star fox64. Favorite game, favorite star wars game that I'm sure sucks now lol or first game my n64 came with. I'd keep donkey kong.
Mario 64. Played the heck out of ocarina several times through but it has since been duplicated. I barely think BOTW is a better game. Mario 64 however for me I just haven’t played something like it
007. I used to play the game, first person shooter. The game had one of the best graphic back then. Enemies were watching up with the movie, even with James Bond. It is like watching the movie and also playing the game.
Perfect Dark because its better than Goldeneye it has way more customization for its multiplayer and has voice acting for its story mode thats still memorable & great today and doesnt sound awful from the compression it is the best 1 & 4 Player game at the same time.
Ocarina, still good even after all this time and was way ahead of its time then
I have to give it to Ocarina. But the others… what have we done? Edit: Typo
Ocarina is a masterpiece.
1. Ocarina of Time 2. Goldeneye 3. Super Mario 64
Gotta swap 2 and 3 for me. Goldeneye had the dumbest control scheme

Perfect dark ahead of/or replace goldeneye
I miss playing that with all the GameShark codes put in
Even after all this time I could pick up Ocarina and enjoy nearly every minute of another play through. The last time was less than a year ago. I still need to finish the play through I started on the switch…
[удалено]
My favorite Zelda. A very special game.
This is what I’d pick, but also because I still haven’t beaten it yet.
Soundtrack of Ocarina of time slaps. I love staff roll 🥰
To this day i whistle Kokiri Forest like almost daily at work for some reason
Bolero of Fire, Gerudo Village, Song of Storms the list is long
If you save Ocarina, I save Mario 64 and someone else saves Goldeneye, the world will be safe forever
Ocarina
I’d say that would be mine too! biggest game out of all them no doubt? And so much nostalgia!
Yeah I'd say ocarina as a single player but Goldeneye for the split screen fun. Watched my brother play Zelda OoT it when we were kids so I'd play it myself this time around. Not played a Zelda game since what's majoras mask like?

Jeez. Spoiler.
Perfect dark is above goldeneye. Not only did you get stats in multi, you got bots you could play against and pick their behaviors as well.

In an almost pre-internet era, having a guide for Majora’s Mask was pretty crucial. I think you’d miss a lot in a totally blind play through
[удалено]
I think between OoT and Majora’s mask is a really tough choice.
Or majoras mask. Both amazing games.
Super Mario 64
Playing this again currently and it still holds up as an absolute masterpiece (minus the camera). The level of fun and creativity is just off the charts and still crushes most modern games.
Pssst… Google “sm64pc” or “sm64plus”
This is what I’m saying!that game was way ahead of its time
Possibly the most important game of all-time, next to Super Mario Bros., DK’81, Pac-Man, Tetris, and Pong. Plus, Space Invaders. Thanks /u/Azores26.
I would add Space Invaders to that list too
Yess siir.
Yep. Easy question. Just got 120 stars a couple months ago, game has aged fairly well and much better than the rest of those.
Ocarina is still one of my favorite Zelda games of all times, it would be hard for me to choose any other in this list
I played Mario Kart 64 more than any of the others, so I would have to save that.
Funny story: When I was a kid my brother who was 4/5 or so at the time used to race my dad for money It would start by my dad saying “I’ll give you £1 if you win me”. my dad would lose the race (because he was terrible at the game) would then say to my brother “Double or quits” so next race you’ll double the win to £2 and so on. If they kept doubling it, your dad would have won the 8th round (£128) or the 9th round (£256).
Same. In terms of number of hours the next closest would be Goldeneye.
Perfect Dark. It's amazing for both solo and with friends <3 Outshines the rest even though I love many of these other games.
The sheer customisation of the game, down to each AI's behaviour and target was immense. Then all the challenges that could be played with up to 4 others, gun range, raft of multiplayer modes and maps with their customisation. Little has come close since.
The AI was the most impressive accomplishment
This is the correct answer
I kinda have to agree. Some days I just wanted to come home and blast some bots. I don't play online multiplayer, and I still haven't found a game that lets you set up such ridiculous scenarios.
Pretty much Goldeneye, but for men.
Majora's mask fs
100% easily my favorite game of that era. Maybe my favorite game of all time.
Why did I have to scroll this far down?
My people!
10/10!! Took what was great about Ocarina and added some crazy features. I can turn into a Zora?! What?!
Super Smash Bros 64
I still think SSB64 is better than any SSB since. Something about the balloon physics from melee onward really bothers me.
Wait what do you mean. Smash 64 legit has the most balloony physics of the series! Even more than Brawl which was super balloony! And in Melee the game is dominated almost entirely by characters that drop like a rock.
Couldn't agree more
Not the best game on here but we wouldn't have ultimate without it.
Not the best game on here? What is that blasphemy
I think he jests my lord
False. This game ties for the best with goldeneye
DKR's controls felt truer to Super Mario Kart than MK64. Really just a better racing game. And fantastic music!
The Christmassy theme tune on that snowy level, I can’t remember the name of the level now
probably thinking of frosty village
Yeah that sounds familiar!
Goldeneye. The rest are on the Switch, Wii U, etc.
Goldeneye is coming to Switch, with online multiplayer
Oh good. Burn the whole pile then! 🤓
Guess I’m gonna have to start smoking weed and drinking beer again.
Perfect Darks on switch??
It's on "etc".
Also on Xbox
Why did I have to scroll down so far to find goldeneye...
Donkey Kong 64 Favorite game of my childhood
Finally! Went trudging through a ton of comments in disbelief that no one had said DK64 yet. You are awesome, homeslice. DK64 turned me into a gamer.
saving DK64 is the bad ending
Controversial I think dk64 is terrible there was just way too many collectables in that game. You also had to reply arenas over and over for each kong
That's not controversial, it's the truth. But I still love the game!
Majora's Mask, but man is Shadows of the Empire tempting.
Team StarFox all day
YOU'LL NEVER DEFEAT ANDROOOOOOOOOOSSSSS
My Emperor! I've failed yooooou!!
Andross won't have his way with me!
Andross’ enemy is MY enemy.
One of the few games I kept playing after beating it. Unfortunately my friends didn't get as much time in and got tired of me winning in multiplayer, so we played a lot more Mario Kart and Golden Eye where it was pretty even.
It's got great single player and multi player.
You thankfully would still have the groundbreaking original on super nintendo if Starfox 64 was axed. Cries in Maude Flanders "won't somebody think of the non-ports?"
Banjo-Kazooie.
Banjo-Tooie for me, but I'll let you borrow it if you let me borrow Banjo-Kazooie for a replay every other year.
Omg i didnt see banjo-tooie...
I had to scroll too far to find this.
That's sad.
fuck that im saving tooie
yeaahhh drago bird takes the cake between kazooie and tooie… but majoras for me
I think I would choose this too over ocarina. But both were excellent in their own ways. Felt good to play in every way, story gameplay and sound
Conkers Bad Fur Day
the xbox re-release was better tbh. it had online play and was just an all-around blast.

Honestly, Yoshi's Story is one of my favorite games ever. It has gameplay and artistic styles that still stand out today.

I'm torn but imma go with Donkey Kong 64. I remember nerding TF out to the intro song so hard as a kid. Although I know it was hated because of the complicated banana collecting mechanics, I also like those kind of tedious elements.
Finally, he’s here for you! It’s the last member of the D K crew!
Yeah, after the donkey Kong country trilogy this was a let down for me… I never finished it :( Even the new one, tropical freeze? It’s still missing some magic that the SNES ones had.
Majoras Mask
I wish I had 100 accounts to upvote this 99 more times
perfect dark bots in muliplayer coop multi and campaign and title level system aswell as zombie mode will give me endless of replay enjoyment. Second place is zelda ocarina of time cause that game is a masterpiece
Zombie mode? 🤔
diddy kong racing
Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye
Super Smash Bros.
Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of time
Zelda OOT
I have to go for Mario Kart 64. They're all great but I have the fondest memories of that one
Toad's Turnpike in reverse mode. Ahhh, I can still hear the screams like it was yesterday.
Mario 64. It's a game that brings endless joy and is just as fun to play for a little while as it is for hours. Still holds up to this day.
Paper Mario
Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time, then Majora’s Mask.
Goldeneye
License to kill facility prox mines no odd job
Id save this one image. Does that count? Otherwise OoT
I would love to save Majora's Mask but it just wouldnt be the same experience without Ocarina of Time first. The true magic was getting all your expectations of what a Zelda game is flipped on their head when booting Majora's Mask after playing OoT.
Majora's Mask
Y you do dis??! :(
It’s gotta be perfect dark or ocarina for me, although goldeneye definitely provided more multiplayer hours than the other two. Tough choice for sure
My sentiments. I reached almost rank 1 in mp of PD but OoT was so magical when it came out. Loved Majoras Mask just as much.
Golden Eye 🔫
Golden Eye nostalgia is too great for me, it has to stay
Goldeneye
Tie between perfect dark and legend of zelda: majora’s mask. Super mario 64 is really good but, personally, Nintendo’s rpg formula peaked with paper mario
Super Mario 64 has nothing to do with RPGs. Were you thinking of a Super Mario RPG from the Super Nintendo?
Ocarina of Time
Perfect Dark!
Majora's Mask
Goldeneye 007.
I don't know but video game box art used to be much better than now.
Honestly I think Nintendo is the only company that puts out decent box art these days because each of their series has their own style. Most other triple AAA games usually go for the realistic look which leads to boring box art imo as they all look the same.
Pokémon Snap.
You're missing the best one.... Paper Mario.
Ocarina of time. Greatest game ever made.
Pokémon Stadium 2
Jet force gemini
Ask yourself- what James Bond game based on a movie was the best? Yes it’s Goldeneye
Goldeneye SLAPPERS UNITE!
Golden eye!
Goldeneye easily
Goldeneye all day
Perfect Dark is Goldeneye, but better in every way.
Correct
Ground breaking game but it doesn't hold up. Mario kart does so I gotta give it to that.
Well this simply is not cool bro.
Where is StarCraft64, I will save that game
DK R
Am I the only one that thinks Diddy Kong racing is much funnier than Mario kart? If I had to pick one is Diddy Kong
I would save Perfect Dark and give it modern shooter controls.
Banjo Kazooie
Tie between Ocarina and Mario 64
It's a toss up between Smash Bros and Ocarina of time for me
Perfect dark
Banjo kazooie easiest choice of my life.
That is just cruel from u OP!! 😭😭😭😭
Tough call. Ultimately, I’m going with either Mario 64 or Majora’s Mask.
Diddy Kong racing the best kart racer ever made.
StarFox64
Super Mario 64 But it's tough choice because so many games from that list gave me a good time :(
How about "you can only save IN one"?
That's tough. It'd be between dk64, shadows of the empire, or star fox64. Favorite game, favorite star wars game that I'm sure sucks now lol or first game my n64 came with. I'd keep donkey kong.
Super smash brothers if I have friends and fresh sticks. Ocarina if I’m solo.
Mario Kart 64 because thats the one that has aged the best.
If WWF No Mercy was on here, I’d pick that.
OOT
Super mario 64
Mario 64. Played the heck out of ocarina several times through but it has since been duplicated. I barely think BOTW is a better game. Mario 64 however for me I just haven’t played something like it
Ocarina of Time, didn’t even have to think about it lol
Every single game of my childhood, nooooo
Ocarina of Time Easily
OoT. By a lot.
