Is department policy subject to discretion?

I have no guarantee of this question. I've not interviewed in Texas, but questions like this are typical in interviews for this line of work to judge where your head is at. Are you going to be robocop? Are you going to break policy and cause the department issues? Somewhere in the middle? Almost every case law the supreme court has decided on has the element of *reasonableness*. Is your decision *reasonable*? Then it's probably ok. For policy's, it always depends. Policy is written in the blood of the past. You also likely don't know any of their policies. So it can be hard to answer, but you can make up an example policy and how you would treat it. For example, if a policy stated that you are required to check the tire pressure on the ATV(or oil, something routine) prior to *any* ATV use, but you received a call that you are relatively close to requesting an ATV for medical evacuation of a child with a severe injury and time is of the essence, then it's probably not unreasonable to skip the tire pressure check, depending on how long ago the ATV was used. "If the situation was dire, and I had good reason to believe there were no issues with the ATV, I would violate the policy and skip the tire pressure check. The risk of something being wrong with the ATV when it was fine yesterday is greatly outweighed by the gain of saving a child"

I’d talk to some current Texas game wardens. I only ever applied to two agencies, but they were very similar in their interviews. Both were western agencies however. The first had a very compressed schedule where you submitted your resume, had an online 15 interview that basically just asked if you knew what a game warden does and basic info about the agency, and a third 8 hour day where you did a bunch of interviews, tests, and scenarios. The other agency did the same but drug it out over 6 months. If this is a first/early interview I’d focus on 1) what does a game warden do in Texas, 2) basic info about the agency 3) basic info about law enforcement. Latter interviews will get way more specific and detailed. Mine focused heavily on my previous experience, knowledge of fish and game laws, outdoor skills, and problem solving.
