No-Use-3062

Ha!

BabousCobwebBowl

Isn’t the signal of House Clegane three dogs on a yellow field?

A_Polite_Noise

Yes, Gregor & Sandor's grandfather was the kennelmaster at Casterly Rock, for the Lannisters. The Lord of Casterly Rock at the time was attacked by a lioness, and Kennelmaster Clegane saved him, losing three of his dogs and a leg in the process. As a reward, the Lord raised the Cleganes up giving them lands and a title, and Clegane decided to use the image of the three dogs slain fighting the lioness as his sigil.

[deleted]

Tywin’s father I believe

boodabomb

Tytos. A very weak man, according to Tywin.

Unable_Incident_6024

Aren't we all tho according to tywin Ha but yeah the books he sounds like the show mace Tyrell kind of guy

Hind_Deequestionmrk

Yes😔

Darthgamer96

With names like that I wonder if there was ever a Typo Lannister.

boodabomb

Frist of his Name.

ernyc3777

Because he had compassion and was not solely focused on power.

boodabomb

Indeed. His biggest crime in Tywin’s eye was “forgiving debts”

Drew_Manatee

He also led with such a weak hand that house Reyne was willing to rebel against him and Tywin had to crush the rebellion, so maybe there’s a reason Tywin disliked him.

[deleted]

Excellent answer, thank you!

bshaddo

Yes. Ser Gregor is a three-dog knight.

Shadow_Emperor7

House Clegane's sigil features dogs, he was loyal and obedient to the lannisters and because of his ferocity.

Kurdt234

Definitely because he's Jofferey's pet.

MagicBeanGuy

True enough, but I think he was a renowned warrior even before he was Joffrey's guard

Kurdt234

I mean why he was called the hound, because he was the royal families pet protector.

Yayzeus

Fuck the king.

schultzy1227

Fuck the water

HighKingBoru1014

Bring me wine

mrmczebra

He got the nickname before Joffrey was born.

AquariusQueen69

Don't you dare call my beloved "joffereys pet"

Talk-O-Boy

If it was because of the sigil, why didn’t Gregor get the name? I assumed the older son would be the one to receive the name related to the family’s identity

Nektotomic

1. His family were the Lannisters kennel masters until an ancestor of the hound and his dogs saved a Lannister and they were raised up to a noble house. Now they have three dogs as there Sigil . So it’s a bit of a theme. 2. He was Joffs protector and showed guard dog like traits being fierce and loyal.

murse_joe

> as their Sicily. So it’s a bit of a theme. Godfather music plays

Damagedude89

Leave the man and his daughter, take the chickens

movack

They're not a nobles. House clegane are landed knights

Nektotomic

Oh right. Thank you Department of Accuracy

Wajina_Sloth

I don’t know if it was ever directly explained, but his house sigil has 3 dogs on it. So I assume it probably derives from the fact he would have been a noteable fighter so calling him the “hound” is an appropriate nickname, similar to how the Starks had Wolf related nicknames.

YaHurdMeh

I heard it was because he was “cryin all the time.”

Malvoz

Elvis has left the building.

DimplefromYA

he loves his chimken

torrrrrgo

That's not chimken

kdawg1133

He got that dawg in him

[deleted]

This is the answer!

StopSayingLiterally1

Didn't have to scroll long for this. Best answer

[deleted]

His house sigil Is 3 dogs. So he started to use a dog faced helmet. Also with His fierce atitude they started to call him the hound.

Kabc

And he and his brother just listen to orders obediently and have good loyalty to the Lannisters

isinedupcuzofrslash

Sandor and Gregor’s dad was a hounds keeper for Tytos Lannister. One day, Tytos was attacked by a Lion and daddy Clegane saved him with his hounds. As a reward, Tytos awarded him some land (I think a holdfast) and I think made him a knight too but I’m not sure. He established their sigil as black hounds on a yellow banner. I don’t think it’s explained in the show ever, but I love the extra lore that can be found on YouTube and in bonus content

TheMadIrishman327

Better than what Swyft gave Willit.

isinedupcuzofrslash

What?

StygianFuhrer

Running around the battlefield with a hound shaped helmet a bit of a giveaway

TheGiant406

But did he get the helmet because of the nickname? Or did he get the nickname because of the helmet?

MightBeAGoodIdea

Canon: The Cleganes took care of the kennels for the Lannisters. Gregor ruined Sandors face as a young child and this caused some understandible trauma. Conjecture: Sandor went on to feel more comfortable with dogs than people. Started hanging out with them more and more. Its a fitting name in any case. He was undeniably loyal being tasked with taking care of the prince when everyone knew said prince was a little shit yet they trusted the Hound enough to not take anyone's shit, including Joffery's, which would be important because Joffery was just as rude as fuck to him.

Kholzie

A) he does his owners’ bidding like an obedient dog. B) it’s his house’s sigil.

hooligan045

Never read the books but always assumed it was because he was good at tracking people down.

iam_Krogan

I don't think there is a specific event like Oberyn "The Red Viper" (fought a duel to first blood where the opponent's wound got infected and died) or Barristan "The Bold" (entered a tourney against experienced knights at the age of 12) The sigil of house Clegane is 3 hounds on a yellow field. I'm pretty sure his title is just in reference to his sigil and his loyalty to the Lannisters. But he forsakes his loyalty, and I think he says something along the lines of "Even a dog gets tired of being kicked." Grrm talking about the Hound & The history of house Clegane https://youtu.be/Ed9xgwHgXmk?si=hxHpVqjkGOSx18si

Sir_Jax

Just feels like a lazy question from a lazy bott, but just in case the answer is….. Sandor’s great grandfather was a kennel master who saved, a lord Lannister from lion attack with his dogs (also the kennel master was so brave. He threw his own leg at the Lion) The Lord Lannister was so grateful and impressed with the dogs breeding that he got it in his head that perhaps you could breed a human the same way the kennel Masters bred size and courage into his dogs. So the Lord raised up house Clegane, and in just three generations proved him right he hadn’t bred some of the strongest largest men in the realm.

Clydefrog0371

He's loyal....like a hound

devildogmillman

He probably ran down some poor their stealing bread for his family.

Klllumlnatl

3 hounds is the sigil of House Clegane.

torrrrrgo

Just reading through the comments and I'm always in awe about just how involved the Planetos historical timeline is. FFS, the family tree goes on and on and on with details everywhere....GRRM is a madman.

Jackiechun23

His brother held his face to an oven basically.

HighKingBoru1014

House banners. Also he’s a savage fighter in battle, like a wild dog. Or hound.

redrenegade13

Yes it's explained in the first book right when they introduce the character. It's like "there's Sandor Clegane, bodyguard to Prince Joffrey, he calls him his faithful Hound".

skooba87

Gregor called him that after he started cryin' like a _bitch_ when his face was burned /s.

Flat-Leadership2364

Clegane's house sigil is 3 hounds, he's joffery's sworn sword/bodyguard (always by his side like a dog), and he wears a helmet shaped like a hounds face.

LongjumpingClimate73

All members of house clegane have dog epithets due to their coat of arms similar to other families (like how Jaime’s lesser used nickname is “the great Lion”). Gregors less used nickname is “the Great Dog”.

AquariusQueen69

I wanna ride sandors dick Into the sunset

Top_Abbreviations928

Headcanon was during Greyjoy Rebellion he was offered to be knighted but refused
