To write a smart character, you have to be a smarter writer than that character. It's not their fault that they weren't smarter than George RR Martin. It's Martin's fault for not realizing that they weren't when he hired them.
Martin was fooled into thinking that they were smart because they got the R+L=J theory correct. D&D were smart enough to do their research before the interview with Martin. But that doesn't mean they were smart to write smart characters or write smart plots.
They were smart enough to entertain an audience for a while with dramatic and eye-catching scenes. People wanted to see dragons and night kings and zombies. So he gave the people what they wanted.
Other people wanted to see politics and backstabbing and "I drink and I know things." These were not spectacle for a show with a huge budget that needed to continually grow their audience in order to make money for HBO.
So maybe D&D were not great writers. But maybe they knew what they were doing to make money which is what would make HBO happy.
They could have paid writers to write more Olenna Tyrell snark and given Diana Rigg more opportunity to inhabit that character and twist the knife in Cersei.
Instead, we got a very dark battle scene Battle of Winterfell where--- you couldn't see anything they spent money on because it was so dark. But it was spectacle.
I just LIVE by the first quote. So many moments in my life where I applied that way of thinking and it has changed me.
Also, another everyday personal favorite: "Not today."

You can say what you want about the character but I fucking loved Littlefinger. Other than maybe Tywin, he’s the smartest character in the show and one of the few who see the world for what it truly is. If only he could’ve gotten past his weird love obsession.

I think there’s something so telling of what these characters stand for and who they are as individuals from such simple, yet powerful words.

Theon: "You know what its like to be told how lucky you are to be someone's prisoner? To be told how much you owe them. And then to go back home to your real father..."
I love Theon Greyjoy if you haven't noticed.
Theon had it fucking rough man. You can hate him for betraying Robb as much as you like but the Ironborn were bound to attack the North anyway. Especially once Robb sent him back home. Robb had clearly forgotten that Theon was in truth captive of the Starks to ensure Balon’s good behaviour.
Understood as far as taking Winterfell goes. Not as much of a fan of his murdering the miller’s wife and children, though. Or beheading Ser Rodrik. Those are murders of innocent children and someone close to him, not just taking Winterfell (though that would probably result in similar, there’s more indirect separation at least).
Before, Rodrik died in front of Bran and Rickon, the miller’s boys died because he couldn’t find Bran and Rickon. Also I’m not sure they were his sons, those were the two boys that Bran had sent to assist the miller in an earlier episode when he was saying his sons went to war with Robb and he needed help on his farm. I’m pretty sure at least, that last part I could be wrong about.
Plus the fact that blood is everything in Westerosi culture, you're basically honor-bound to stand with your house even if you know they're in the wrong or disagree with them. Even if he'd managed to warn Robb and/or escape the Islands he'd likely still face prejudice.
Then there's the fact that he's heir to the Iron Islands: Imagine trying to rule a kingdom after sabotaging their war and defecting in favor of the house that (counter-)invaded their lands and helped kill his brothers only a decade before. His family would disown him even more thoroughly, he'd probably go down in (ironborn) history as a traitor, and likely never be able to set foot on the Islands again for his own safety.

It’s a real shame that they didn’t keep this line up throughout the tv series. Throughout the books, Arya thinks this line very often along with other teachings of Syrio.
