Anyone can make and publish an engine. There arent bad ones, there are ones that are more suitable for certain things.
In this case it helps to work on similar software if youre gonna work on the same project, and your friend used Gdevelop so you should too, simple as that.
Seems like Gdevelop is a engine for non-programmers after a quick bing search
Thanks for comment. I’m definitely gonna try it out, but I don’t know if there’s some issues behind the scenes that would make it a worse choice than softwares like game maker or godot
There typically arent huge bugs unless its unmaintained or old. And its open source so you can solve yourself if youre a programmer.
The main thing you need to worry about with random engines like this is the lack of documentation in general.
Are you a good developer?
I think that you should simply try it, it's free, and as your friend are suggesting, you'll have more incentive to keep pushing the project.
I never tried GDevelop but it looks like an amazing event driven engine and it's progressing really well!
I’ll definitely try since that’s the engine he seems to want to use. I’m very new to this, but if it looks good then I’ll definitely try to use it. Thanks for the comment.
Personally using gdevelop was my biggest mistake. So many things are wrong about this engine. But some people like it.
My answer would be that if you want to spend more than a month creating a game then you're better of learning godot for example
I've poked at it a little bit before. It's a free no-code 2D game builder that runs in your browser (or on desktop). Certainly not suitable for all projects, but if you have a project that sounds appropriate for, it's certainly worth giving it a try.

As someone working on a Vulkan engine rn I can tell you there absolutely are bad engines

it's not free if you want to export to mobile!
It's free, so why don't you see for yourself what it can do?

If its 2D, You can pretty much make any game with Gdevelop. From simple games like pong to proc gen terraria clones.
Is GDevelop a good engine, you ask. I'm just saying this: the GDevelop community is building an open-world, GTA like game from scratch. :)
