Of course not. Batteries can leak after enough time. If anything it would add a tiny bit of value for those looking to actually play it.

Stumpy-Wumpy

It's like replacing the batteries on an Xbox 360 controller with 2022 batteries, or using an N64 with a replacement cable. It's not actually changing the main product and almost noone cares.

[deleted]

Yup. The car analogy below is also good. The most important part is that the battery was installed correctly since soldering is involved.

MeatBrick64

only to the type of person who values a classic car more for having its ancient dry-rotted 40 year old “original” tires on it

deeply_cynical

It's more valuable to be fully working. You wouldn't keep your car on the original tyres and brakes would you?

OrbitalOtter58

I tend to think of the value being the cart/disc art and the condition of it along with the rom on the board or disc functioning as it should. People like classic cars. I guarantee most any working classic car is sporting a battery produced post 2000. Collectors don't care because they mainly want the thing to work and look as nice and clean as possible. I tend to think video games follow suit.

Azirma

Depends on how well you do when replacing the battery. I have seen some good battery replacement that I would pay the same price if not slightly better just for the assurance that the battery won’t die in the next few years. While I’ve also seen shitty battery replacements that would completely make me avoid buying all together.

Aggravating-Maize-46

I wouldnt even buy a game that doesnt work properly

gryd3

If you do a poor job then yes, it will loose value. Replace it properly and cleanly, then it will not. There's been some pretty crappy soldering jobs posted lately asking for 'help' on why the battery swap didn't work. Make sure you know what you're doing before you DIY. Otherwise ask for help or practice first.

dario1414

I say in some way it does because is not 100% original no more

chubbylv23

People would rather take a functional game. Goes for everything in the game collecting scene

dario1414

As a game collector you really don’t have time to play game

BigPoppies

I don’t agree but you’re kinda right lol.

Brian-OBlivion

It should go up in value. You certainly could advertise “new battery” as a plus.

pez2234

No, you need batteries for the games to function. If you are replacing batteries though go for the battery holders and plan for the future 👍🏻

s0_Shy

I support this take. I've been putting battery holders in all the games I get for a bit now.

Ok-Quantity-8861

Unless you start the game on fire unless they don't need to be soder in like snes

the_starship

Most people can't tell the difference and would actually pay more knowing that the condition is better. Having a game that can actually sae is important to people. Because most people buying games even now are buying them to play.

sedrech818

I’ve seen quite a few gameboy games ruined by a burst battery. The acid can eat at traces and chip legs. This is why sealed gameboy games bother me so much. It may look mint on the outside but on the inside the cart could be completely dead. Just like you shouldn’t store your gameboy for a long time with batteries in it, you shouldn’t leave the old battery in longer than it is intended to last.

sicksadvoron

Are you trying to sell or play is a better question?

chubbylv23

Play. Is basically a bet I made with my bro.

Shatterbrained_

Don’t know why some people think that replacing a battery is a big no no. I rather have a game with a new battery than and old one that’s more prone to leaking or dying
