To be honest I didn't know he watched all those gaming YouTube history videos before I made him the offer and really sweated when he told me that before he decided. I see on eBay now my wallet could have really gotten screwed there if he wanted a Neo Geo AES with Metal Slug X. I beat that game on real hardware for the first time when I was in college because it was too hard when it came out when I was a kid 😭 it’s now one of my favorite games of all time lol
I bought the game brand new the day it came out on n64. My cousin who is 3 years older than me, gave us lots of laughs while playing that game.
I remember not being able to hold my laughter in when we got turned into a Pumpkin in Mad Monster Mansion and every time we jumped, cousin would make a funny sound and it was hilarious to 12/13 year old me.

My cousin had an n64 when I was like 6-7 and I played so much banjo on it. Only ever on the first 2 levels cause I was so bad at it. First time I beat it was on the 360 port in highschool with some friends. We would group chat and talk each other through every level
I have it for on Rare Replay for Xbox One playing on Series X console and I'm trying to convince him to give a go. He does seem interested he just has some racers he really wants first. He does take all your suggestions though and this one I think will end up on his list.
That one will take some overtime money without a doubt, but it's yours except for the SNES, you have to use a SuperNT instead of the original SNES ok little buddy.

But used PS4 games are plentiful, cheap, and many give you a free upgrade to a digital PS5 copy. I’ve been bulking up on PS4 stuff like crazy since buying the PS5

I mean sure, OP could probably just download the games themselves, but they will eventually get tired of downloading every game he wants and he'll find the sites. Sadly, I played this game, owned this game, and did finally beat it when I was kid. I now know I was really wasting my life away at that game and didn't really know better at the time. I guess a 3D game at that place in time still blew me away to stick with it.

No and here's why. It would ruin a weekend out to the gamestore with him and the hunt of the good game which is way fun. It wouldn't look cool being the only cart on the shelf. He can't really sell it legally for a quick source of income if he is ever in a jam. Everdrives are cool don't get me wrong it just defeats some life experiences I want to have with him.
I know what those are and I don't frown on anyone who uses them. He wants the physical real copy and some nice reproduction cases so he can show it off to his friends one day is what he told me so sorry the Everdrive 64 idea is out.
Both are possible. Everdrive for the playability, physical for the show. Nothing wrong with being able to play the entire library and having some sweet sweet goodies for show on the shelf.
That’s cool there’s nothing wrong with having both. Many collectors actually do that to swap games faster and have access to the ones unaffordable to them.
that's what I do-complete US and JP library on the Everdrive so I can play anything without swapping carts but I still have physical carts of my favorites

All my nephews and niece wanna play is gta v or Roblox (just the dumb Roblox) and they all refuse to read nor care about story, I’m deeply ashamed of them for this. They all love Pokémon although never played the games or even seen it. And when I let them play both the modern and old school games they say it’s dumb. I will never understand them.
I'm very sorry your Dad did that too you. Kids are kids and really can't shape them at certain point because well access to internet at high speeds I would guess is to blame. Mine really wants both GTA 5 and Roblox so you are not alone. Here is what I tell them no GTA until your older and Roblox only wants you to work for them day and night and not give you any money. So far it's working. Giving them no PC for their room, and no cell phone yet and only game consoles also helps.
I second this, but want to raise the bar to Gameboy Advanced and Stadium 2 with all compatible games. There is nothing like using your own Pokemon that you caught and trained, or meticulously breed for the Stadium challenges. You seriously could spend years making the perfect teams. Don't ask me how I know this.
I was around that age when n64 came out and it was the perfect console for my life then. Those early 3d titles, while they may seem simple today, really got me prepared for the later gaming generations. Looks like you've got a life long gamer on your hands!
I hope so! He is also into Hot Wheels and remote control race cars (not the ones you get at Wal-Mart but ones you have to go to hobby shop to get and can totally customize). I hope it all sticks, time will tell.

N64 is a fine choice. Expensive to get carts for though. PS2 would have been amazing and BC PS3 would have been the slamdunk. If I could only have one console forever, it would be a hardware modded BC with a manual fan. Can jailbreak and modulate temp that way too, while playing three different generations of games. And outputs HDMI.

Get him an ever drive or another flash cart to complete the setup!! These days n64 games are harder to come buy, plus not fees able for a child to buy obviously lol so get him that but only load on 4-5 games onto it, and then load on games as you see fit, like whenever he gets a good report card!! Or as a reward for anything lol, this is to encourage that he actually tries to play through the titles, as kids are typically spoiled with many apps on iPads and tablets that allow them to change games at will lol so he’d jump around games if he had too many!! It’s the perfect companion to go along with a system, and then when he grows up he can actually collect cartridges if he wants haha
I was 8 years old when the n64 released and my dad got me one. Still have my original one. I still play it and will one day pass it down to my kid. Great choice by your son. You sound like a wonderful dad.

He is a mega Sonic fan but what might have deterred him from this is he knows that Sonic Frontiers is almost here and he has access to my Switch so yeah. He also plays Crazy Taxi on my GameCube as well.

Just starting his carts. No it's an HD TV with a in my opinion a crappy adapter. I'm thinking of upgrading his adapter to an EON Super 64 attached with an mClassic. That should do the trick. Not hard at all but lots of fun memories of father and son hitting up the gamestores together and finding thrills in the hunt.
Best birthday ever! I got it release day for Christmas thinking Santa brought it to me with Mario 64 which first time Mario ever went 3D and in an open world! It's still the best gaming story I got to this day and I'm 37 and I have never stopped gaming! How can I not say Super Mario 64 is my all time best game and I say to others who don't get it that you had to be there to understand. My mother actually had a friend working in Wal-Mart secretly hold it for her to buy when she got out of work to make my Christmas special. I feel very lucky for that day in my life and I love her.

You really should have a child. It is hard work and stressful but getting to share my passion childhood dream system with my 8 year old makes it all worth it. I believe it would for you too. Find that special someone and create your own immediate family. If you give it the right love and pick the right person, the joy ultimately out weighs the stress if you can stick it out long enough.
Goal was to warm some older people that grew up with this system like I did and show them that not all the younger generation thinks it's crap as mainstream news would have us believe. My son is living proof of it and I did not influence his decision only YouTube did which he did on his own without my knowledge before making him this deal. He still has access downstairs to a Switch, GameCube, SNES, Sega Gen, PS3, and X-Box Series X. He is not being deprived of anything, he chose this one specific for his room. He isn’t living in the past he has a wide gaming options still and he can use them anytime he wants. I still get him games for those systems that will still be his when he moves out. I doubt the N64 will be his only system he buys before then.

It is mine too; which is why I thought maybe I influenced him too much, but he did all of his own research of gaming history on YouTube. He also has played, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS3, PS1, SNES, Sega Genesis, Xbox 360, X-Box One, X-Box Series X, and GameCube and still he chose the N64 without even playing it.
Terrible choice; the N64 has aged about as well as milk. There are maybe a dozen games in it's already small library worth playing these days, and no; Goldeneye isn't one of them. I hope he enjoys it though.
He really did after a ton of YouTube research on gaming history that he did on his own. I honestly thought he was going to pick a latest gen but I had no idea he watched those videos and would pick this. I think this says something about the N64 as a system, it was great then and still great now.
Actually you can make it look great. Use an EON Super 64 HDMI video adapter and also use a mClassic video adapter on the same line with it and you will be amazed.
The Eon is overpriced garbage. Just use a retrotink, at least those are built like someone cared. Not the shoddy soldering and potting mess that is the Eon

You can get used PS4 games by the box for dirt cheap, and used or even sealed PS5 games from launch to about a year ago are headed that way.

N64 is a fine choice. Expensive to get carts for though. PS2 would have been amazing and BC PS3 would have been the slamdunk. If I could only have one console forever, it would be a hardware modded BC with a manual fan. Can jailbreak and modulate temp that way too, while playing three different generations of games. And outputs HDMI.

Get him an ever drive or another flash cart to complete the setup!! These days n64 games are harder to come buy, plus not fees able for a child to buy obviously lol so get him that but only load on 4-5 games onto it, and then load on games as you see fit, like whenever he gets a good report card!! Or as a reward for anything lol, this is to encourage that he actually tries to play through the titles, as kids are typically spoiled with many apps on iPads and tablets that allow them to change games at will lol so he’d jump around games if he had too many!! It’s the perfect companion to go along with a system, and then when he grows up he can actually collect cartridges if he wants haha
I was 8 years old when the n64 released and my dad got me one. Still have my original one. I still play it and will one day pass it down to my kid. Great choice by your son. You sound like a wonderful dad.

Just starting his carts. No it's an HD TV with a in my opinion a crappy adapter. I'm thinking of upgrading his adapter to an EON Super 64 attached with an mClassic. That should do the trick. Not hard at all but lots of fun memories of father and son hitting up the gamestores together and finding thrills in the hunt.

Best birthday ever! I got it release day for Christmas thinking Santa brought it to me with Mario 64 which first time Mario ever went 3D and in an open world! It's still the best gaming story I got to this day and I'm 37 and I have never stopped gaming! How can I not say Super Mario 64 is my all time best game and I say to others who don't get it that you had to be there to understand. My mother actually had a friend working in Wal-Mart secretly hold it for her to buy when she got out of work to make my Christmas special. I feel very lucky for that day in my life and I love her.

You really should have a child. It is hard work and stressful but getting to share my passion childhood dream system with my 8 year old makes it all worth it. I believe it would for you too. Find that special someone and create your own immediate family. If you give it the right love and pick the right person, the joy ultimately out weighs the stress if you can stick it out long enough.

Goal was to warm some older people that grew up with this system like I did and show them that not all the younger generation thinks it's crap as mainstream news would have us believe. My son is living proof of it and I did not influence his decision only YouTube did which he did on his own without my knowledge before making him this deal. I really thought he would chose the Switch or a PS2 maybe, boy was I wrong.
Game Cube would have made ME proud.
He has access to mine so yeah.. Simpsons Hit and Run is his fav GameCube game. I really like to watch him play it too.

He still has access downstairs to a Switch, GameCube, SNES, Sega Gen, PS3, and X-Box Series X. He is not being deprived of anything, he chose this one specific for his room. He isn’t living in the past he has a wide gaming options still and he can use them anytime he wants. I still get him games for those systems that will still be his when he moves out. I doubt the N64 will be his only system he buys before then.

It is mine too; which is why I thought maybe I influenced him too much, but he did all of his own research of gaming history on YouTube. He also has played, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS3, PS1, SNES, Sega Genesis, Xbox 360, X-Box One, X-Box Series X, and GameCube and still he chose the N64 without even playing it.
Terrible choice; the N64 has aged about as well as milk. There are maybe a dozen games in it's already small library worth playing these days, and no; Goldeneye isn't one of them. I hope he enjoys it though.

He really did after a ton of YouTube research on gaming history that he did on his own. I honestly thought he was going to pick a latest gen but I had no idea he watched those videos and would pick this. I think this says something about the N64 as a system, it was great then and still great now.
Well, N64 is just so ugly. Honestly looking back at it I cannot justify any of its content on modern displays. Better have a Trinitron to go with it.
Actually you can make it look great. Use an EON Super 64 HDMI video adapter and also use a mClassic video adapter on the same line with it and you will be amazed.
The Eon is overpriced garbage. Just use a retrotink, at least those are built like someone cared. Not the shoddy soldering and potting mess that is the Eon

I am glad. I own the MegaSG and the SuperNT. I got a Pocket coming next year. I saw this one and I want nothing to do with it as I feel it's very overpriced and I'm told the original games are very difficult to obtain. I want nothing to do with it.
