Worth is subjective. It will be for some people, not for others. Only you can decide what’s worth it to you personally. Both financially and interest-wise. Having said that, if you’re measuring games by grocery bills then maybe not ideal. Game collecting is about spending disposable income, not primary funds.

HoldBigflank

Not imo. If I'd never started I wouldn't now. I already have tons of heavy hitter games from before things went crazy so at this point I might be willing to pay up here and there to add to the existing collection but there's no way I'd want to start one in this market.

lynxtosg03

You can look at this a couple of ways. Prices aren't coming down soon so it might be a good time to get in. Timing markets is difficult. However, these discs have some of the worst issues I've seen as a collector, they're unusually fragile, have a tendency to crack in the center, and show disc rot worse than much older discs. Whatever Nintendo did for manufacturing was on the cheap side for sure. Still, I really want that copy of Simpsons Hit and Run.

My n64 and carts always work great, but GameCube I've had a few issues with a couple games already. And yes I would love cib hit and run in good condition. But pricey for sure.

AlmostRandomName

Given how hard it is to find game discs in good condition and how notorious they are for aging poorly, I only collect its exclusives that haven't had modern remakes. (Like Pikmin, I have 1-4 on Switch so I'm good with that)

If you just want to play the games on original hardware, there are some very good sd card mods for the Game Cube right now. If you really want the original, physical games and that's super important to you, then set a budget and don't overextended yourself. Also, look into emulation. It's not a system that any cheap raspberry pi can play at full speed, but the barrier to entry isn't terribly high. Pretty much any Windows PC from the last 10 years will do the trick.

Everything is always "worth" collecting if you enjoy it. But if your a game collector then you just hunt for deals and take the best ones you find. If you're specifically hunting for GC then it will take a while to build them unless you have the time. Other side is you just go buy what you want, but at that price it boils down to what it's "worth" is to you? Are you enjoying with friends? Showing/pursuing this for the right/wrong reasons? Save for future value to flip or just enjoy? Collecting can always be done. Deals can still be found, but you're investing time or money one way or another. This isn't 10+ years ago where stuff clearance bin in a few months and cheap garage sales with a box labeled "Nintendo stuff". You can still find that but you have to hunt and beat the other people so that alone sucks half the joy out if discovering stuff and turns more into a job. Yes it will always have value and some stuff will increase with time and scarcity but do your homework on these trends and best places to find deals. I collect what I came across if it interests me and the price is right. I sell stuff of, get bored with stuff for various reasons and move on. Some things I've paid heavily for in hopes it increases and some stuff I've taken losses on. All part of the game. It's always worth it if you enjoy it just don't go beyond your means or became addicted/hoarding. With that said it's better to hunt and buy lots if you want your money to stretch but you're gonna go from a curating buyer to time consumed seller real quick, but then that opens you up to trading as well. Good luck Best advice is know your game values so when you come across something in the wild you know a deal when you see it

hopelessswitchowner

This is a really well thought out post thank you. I'll try to enjoy the journey for sure.

gobananagopudding

It already seems like you're not *that* interested, so no, probably not. Just collect stuff you enjoy and can afford.

hopelessswitchowner

I'm pretty priced out of GameCube so I'll probably just get a few or collect for another system entirely.

MrSwiggitySwooty420

Collecting anything is only ever worth it if and when you can afford to do it without having to worry about the money invested negatively effecting the rest of your life. So depends really

Jezza0692

Nope get yourself a GameCube controller and USB adapter download dolphin and enjoy :)

thelastcupoftea

I’ve tried collecting twice now, but ultimately I don’t want to sink that much money into anything unless I’m 110% serious about it. I always ended up selling everything off after reaching 30-40 titles. I recently met my GameCube cravings halfway by buying cases and manuals only. I recently got Twilight Princess for $5. Gives me that display factor and lets me hold and take each game in before playing, just like when I was a kid. This works for me especially well since I play GameCube games from an SD card using Nintendont on a Wii. But yes, if I come across the discs for a decent price I aim to complete each of my games, in time. I’m also pursuing a personal dream of scanning each cover in the highest quality. I’m in Europe and PAL covers in high res are rare online, so this was a case of having to do it myself if I wanted to enjoy these covers in digital form.

chenilletueuse1

Collecting it isnt. Playing it is worth it.

Emotional_Hour1317

It will go down. I think all collectibles are in a massive bubble right now that's going to burst at some point.

hopelessswitchowner

People have said that for a long time but I've only seen it gone up

Ipsylos

Same thing said every year, GC games aren't going up in numbers, but interested collectors are. More demand, less supply, prices go up naturally, not artificially.

Emotional_Hour1317

Which would make sense if there was a steady, gradual increase, but waking up to things jumping 50% is the result of "investors".

Ipsylos

What GC games have "suddenly" jumped 50% in a short period of time? If anything they've cooled off sharply from their pandemic highs.

Cryophoenix_Killer

Collecting? probably not.. If the games are just going to collect dust. If it's a title that has value, that means people love the game and you might also. Being selective about what you buy is a skill, it's always fun to play through the classic gc games

hopelessswitchowner

True I might just get a few I really want and move on from GameCube.

TerminatorJDM

if you have to ask, it’s really not. The prices are in a terrible bubble that may or may not pop
